[Bug 1886319] [NEW] License information for apps is incorrect

2020-07-05 Thread jdaviescoates
Public bug reported:

Eg. it tells me that Brasero is Proprietary when in fact it is GPL2.

It also says Brasero has never been updated, which is also clearly
incorrect.

I've seen these issues with others apps too.

[Bug 1877388] Re: If DVD drive is present system very often fails to start-up

2020-05-29 Thread jdaviescoates
I thought I might have to get into Grub to select mainline kernel (do
I?), but either way right now the machine boots up fine with the DVD
drive in.

Although when booting I get the messages shown in the attached
screenshot about 'bootconfig' being found on the command line, but no
bootconfig found

Only if 20.04 installs them? I didn't upgrade, I did a clean install on
a new hard drive. But I was running 18.04 on this machine fine for
years.

Could well be I guess.

However, whilst booted I just whacked the DVD drive in and am now
listening to a CD on it fine. So it certainly works.

Also, this issue only started once I starting using 20.04. It never
happened with 18.04. These facts would seem to suggest a software issue
to me.

But yeah, for now I'm mostly just leaving the drive out so that booting
up works!

[Bug 1877388] Re: If DVD drive is present system very often fails to start-up

2020-05-12 Thread jdaviescoates
OK, so last night I shut down, inserted the DVD drive and then switched
on again. Then I left it overnight. Was still stuck in the morning.

Then I powered off using Alt+Fn+PrtSc, s, u, o, took the drive out and
powered on again. It still got stuck. But then rebooted with
Alt+Fn+PrtSc, s, u, b, and it booted fine.

Then powered off again, inserted drive again, turned on again. Got
stuck. Took drive out. Was still stuck. Rebooted with Alt+Fn+PrtSc, s,
u, b, and it booted fine (possibly after initially getting stuck again)

In short:

> Does the system eventually finish booting?

No.

> try disconnecting the drive while it is stuck and tell us if that
allows the system to finish booting

No, it doesn't.

[Bug 1877388] [NEW] If DVD drive is present system very often fails to start-up

2020-05-07 Thread jdaviescoates
Public bug reported:

Whenever I power down, upon next boot the system just hangs with Ubuntu
at the bottom of the screen and the circle above going around and around
forever.

It happens nearly every ime I power down, but not every single time.
Rebooting rather that powering down works quite often.

At first when thing hung I would just hard power off by holding down the
power key. Then I'd use the live usb I installed with to run Disks app.
More often than not the vfat W95 FAT32 partition at sda1 was damaged.
The first repair would fail. The second repair would succeed. And then
I'd be able to boot into my system again.

After chatting about it a little with EriC^^ in #ubuntu on IRC I learned
how to do Alt+Fn+PrtSc S, U, B or S, U, O. Sometimes just doing either
of those on the hang screen would result in it booting up fine next
time. Sometimes not.

After installing 20.04 (a fresh install on a brand new Samsung 860 EVO
1TB sdd hard drive) I copied back all the files in my home direct that
I'd backed from 18.04, including hidden files. This confused Firefox so
I had to delete related folders and then unintall and reinstall to stop
Firefox being confused. This might have nothing whatsoever to do with
this issue, just mentioning it just in case something else is similarly
confused. EriC^^ suggested I try adding another user and seeing if the
issue went away. On the first test (and some but not all subsequent
tests) it did seem that TestUser could power down and reboot fine. But
actually it didn't seem that different.

I powered down, rebooted, used live usb to repair Disk over and over
again for hours trying to find a pattern as to when it happened and when
it didn't, but failed to find any fixed pattern.

Eventually at one point it was taking a while to power down (or reboot,
I forget) and so I hit Esc and spotted that it had failed to unmount
/cdrom ...

... so then I thought I'd try completely removing my DVD/CDRW drive and
that made the issue go away.

Before filing this I put the DVD drive back in (but haven't since
rebooted), so not sure if apport has picked up it's details or not?
Perhaps I'll need to re-file the bug after booting with it present?

same, but perhaps related?

[Bug 1096727] [NEW] Black screen/ system crash every single time I close and re-open lid

2013-01-06 Thread jdaviescoates
Public bug reported:

Every single time I close and then re-open the lid of my laptop I get a
black screen and no response to anything.

I just upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 in the hope that it would help, but
it has made it worse. Previously, on 12.04, I could press Alt+SysRq+K
to get back to the login screen, but no even that doesn't work.

[Bug 948021] [NEW] Battery (not present)

2012-03-06 Thread jdaviescoates
Public bug reported:

For some reason my laptop (a Dell Inspiron 6400) no longer recognises my
battery.

If I click on the battery icon it says: Battery (not present)

But in /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info is says:

present: yes
design capacity: 6600 mAh
last full capacity: 6989 mAh
battery technology: rechargeable
design voltage: 10800 mV
design capacity warning: 660 mAh
design capacity low: 200 mAh
cycle count: 0
capacity granularity 1: 66 mAh
capacity granularity 2: 66 mAh
model number: DELL00
serial number: 27
battery type:LION
OEM info:MSL

And in /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state/ it says:

present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: charging
present rate:1 mA
remaining capacity: 0 mAh
present voltage: 462 mV

I don't have a 'phantom' battery as per bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/852406 and it's duplicates
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/863518 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-power/+bug/863520 (I
had initially assumed I had a hardware issue - as they are assuming
here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/75474/my-battery-is-not-charging-
after-power-outage , but since many others seem to have similar non-
hardware issues perhaps I don't...)

unity-3d

But I'm going to give Kubuntu and Linux Mint a try, because even though I
quite like unity this and other basic usability and functionality problems
(e.g. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=661837
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/922095 ) are beginning
to really annoy me :(

I think I've already done so above, but:

1. I click on gedit icon in unity, an instance opens
2. I double click on a text file in nautilus, another instance opens.

Thanks,

Josef.

Well, we've gone off topic (sorry everyone), but AFAIK e.g. KDE (and I
assume Kubuntu?) doesn't use nautilus as it's file manager.

Cheers,

No, not at all! :P

I've tried selecting 2d and/ or 3d a couple of times but didn't notice any

[Bug 922095] [NEW] unity keeps on opening additional instances of nautilus

2012-01-26 Thread jdaviescoates
Public bug reported:

Whenever I click on Home Folder icon unity in opens another instance/
window of nautilus rather than focusing on the already open instance.
The first time I do it it adds another Home Folder icon to unity at the
bottom, just above the Workspaces icon. Additional clicks on the Home
Icon at the top then open another window on that instance.

[Bug 874386] Re: Can't drag/drop files onto bookmarked folders

2011-11-07 Thread jdaviescoates
Why has this been marked Invalid? It's regression, no? You could always
drop files into bookmarked folders before and now you can't, which is
pretty frustrating.

[Bug 777292] Re: Gedit not single instance when started from unity

2011-10-29 Thread jdaviescoates
I've just upgraded to 11.10 and this issue has not been fixed.

It is very easy to replicate:

1. Open geedit from Unity
2. Open a text file by double clicking on it in file manager
3. Note that the text file has not opened in the gedit instance opened from
Unity.

er that should've been some people *prefer* an instance per file and
you can do that by right-clicking on the tab within an existing
*instance*.

[Bug 777292] Re: Gedit not single instance when started from unity

2011-10-05 Thread jdaviescoates
I also find it to be very annoying that a new instance of gedit is
opened whenever I open another file by double clicking or right clicking
on it. I want all text files to open in the same instance.

Clearly some people an instance per file though eg.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=845906 although as someone
pointed out above you can do that by right-clicking on the tab within an
existing option.

The obvious solution is for there to be a simple configurable option:
open all text files in one instance yes/ no.

[Bug 843971] [NEW] Latest update broke firefox/gnome/nautilus

2011-09-07 Thread jdaviescoates
Public bug reported:

Since the recent (last night/ today) update of firefox and the other ff
packages loads of stuff has stopped working. The problem appears
whenever I need to browse files, e.g. in order to add an attachment in
gmail, find images to upload to flickr etc. Basically everytime I click
on a Browse files button firefox crashes. Very very annoying :( (makes
it impossible to do lots of standard simple tasks).

I'm on ubuntu 11.04 with everything up-to-date.

[Bug 777831] [NEW] Middle click doesn't work

2011-05-05 Thread jdaviescoates
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

In all previous versions of ubuntu (and other flavours of linux) I've
used I can select some text and then middle click to paste it. This no
longers works in ubuntu 11.04 on my Dell Inspiron 6400 (after my upgrade
from 10.10). In fact, middle click doesn't appear to be working at all,
e.g. I could previously middle click on a link in firefox/ chrome to

[Bug 59966] Re: edgy rhythmbox doesnt keep playlists

2010-10-15 Thread jdaviescoates
If I open rhythm box without my external hard drive plugged in (where
all my music is) then it looses all the songs that were there and then
takes ages re-importing them again once I plug the external hard drive
in again.

It also completely and utterly loses all my playlists. Luckily I mostly
just use shuffle, because otherwise loosely the playlists would be
really REALLY f*!king annoying, not just mildly f*!king annoying!

PS I'm on an update to date ubuntu 10.04 on this machine

[Bug 327284] Re: [Jaunty Alpha4] Bluetooth Headset pairs but freezes the system when used

2009-05-02 Thread jdaviescoates
Are any of people who have got this working using blueman? Because
without blueman I don't seem to be able to pair at all.

With blueman I can pair no problem, but I can't for the life of me route
audio to the device (a sony hws-bta2w).

I my system doesn't freeze like the title of this bug mentions, but as I
just said I can't for the life of me route audio to the device...

I constantly get Failure: Module initalization failed.

Anyway, should I remove blueman before trying this fix? Or will it make
no difference? Anyone know?

Thanks, been trying stuff for hours and hours (was hoping that 9.04
would make it easier) and really want to get this working one day! :P

[Bug 202959] Re: [hardy] generating locales stalls on 64mb ram

2008-07-21 Thread jdaviescoates
Same trouble here, although I'm upgrading to 8.04 rather than installing
from afresh. I've for 700MB RAM and 1Ghz or thereabouts on an old HP
Compaq nx9010.

Its my girlfriend's computer and I've effectively broken it by clicking
on upgrade distribution and now I'm going away for a month or so and she
is left laptopless. :(

Very disappointing that I so often have problems upgrading ubuntu :(

Is there anyway I can just downgrade again? (I guessing not?)

[Bug 202959] Re: [hardy] generating locales stalls

2008-07-21 Thread jdaviescoates
I just read this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=865679

Re: Hardy 8.04 update freezes on generating locales
Just had this problem myself. It seems to be to do with the latest Gutsy kernel
version.

These steps worked for me:

   1. Reboot your box, and press ESC to enter the GRUB menu
   2. Select the previous version of the kernel xxx.14 rather than xxx.15
(sorry I can't recall the exact version numbers) - don't select the fail-safe
mode.
   3. Log-in as your admin user into recovery mode
   4. Manually (re)start the upgrade via a terminal session: dpkg --configure -a

It should complete the install.

Good luck

Seems to be working now :)

Hopefully this will help some of the people here too :)
