[Bug 2043517] Re: gnome-shell on non-active VT busy-loops through libwayland-server.so (sometimes)

2024-03-06 Thread Alan Jenkins
The bug re-occurred, after manually building libwayland with debugging
symbols.

So I could do more debugging, and I think this Ubuntu bug needs to be
reassigned to Xwayland.

I have filed more details in the upstream Xwayland tracker.

[Bug 1871306] Re: [SRU] No sound from internal card chtmax98090 (missing UCM2 files in alsa-ucm-conf)

2023-04-18 Thread Alan Jenkins
Status for sound on Dell Chromebook 3120. On Ubuntu 22.04.2 (kernel
5.15.0-69-generic):

1. alsa-ucm-conf now seems to include the required UCM2 files. Hurrah!
2. you also need the firmware-sof-signed package, which you have to enable the
"restricted" apt repository to get. Some people enable "restricted" already,
when they install Ubuntu.
3. after a few minutes continuous playback the sound breaks (continuous beep).
This is fixed by adding the module/boot option snd_sof.sof_debug=1, as
described here: https://github.com/thesofproject/sof/issues/5437

Secondly, this system is affected by the same "after setting
snd_intel_dspcfg.dsp_driver=2 the Sound is Pitched down and too slow".

NOTICE: Upstream has suggested that future kernels will effectively
default to "snd_intel_dspcfg.dsp_driver=2" on this hardware. I.e. the
default would change from SOF to SST. If you have this "pitched down"
problem, my only solution is to change back using the boot/module option
"snd_intel_dspcfg.dsp_driver=3"

[Bug 1801205] Re: Can't mount veracrypt volumes

2022-05-10 Thread Daniel Jenkins
Thanks Sebastien. That clarified the panorama.

After the creation of the file (and a reboot) gnome-disks do see if
there is a partition on any HD that has some resemblance to a veracrypt
encryption and if the pass was saved under "seahorse" it opens it up
automatically. Manually I get the same result (encrypted container
files).

Now the question is why this feature was added like a main upgrade if
that involve on the creation of a obscure file? Anyways. Closing the
thread.

The version that came with Ubuntu 20.04 ran correctly on this machine.
Please investigate and recompile as appropriate.

[Bug 1858881] Re: Batch mode doesn't work in version 3.0.2

2020-09-26 Thread Andy Jenkins
I can confirm that what Christodoulos has said works.

I had a look at the upstream source and I'm surprised that you found it
working on the machines you tested on. It appears that
soundconverter.batch.prepare_files_list() can't deal with the uri-
encoded filenames which are given in line 218 of bin/soundconverter.py:

files = [vfs_encode_filename(f) for f in  files]

Reverting commit 51757e "Fix filename encoding issue" (after checking
out 3.0.2) fixed batch mode for me but presumably whichever issue was
solved by this commit is reintroduced.

I can also confirm that batch mode works properly for me in version
3.1.0.

[Bug 1855350] Re: Will not logout or shutdown form guest-session

2020-05-11 Thread Graham Jenkins
Yes, I removed the wrapper, and I was then able to logout successfully.
But when I the logged in as a regular user, I had some problems with
selecting windows within my session.

On another host today, I observed that I'm now able to shutdown or
reboot from a guest session .. but can't logout. I'm not sure why
this is different, but I think it may be related an update to
gnome-shell that occurred during an package-update today.

[Bug 1876628] Re: App list not scrolling properly with touchpad

2020-05-04 Thread Andy Jenkins
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Steps to reproduce (20.04), shell 3.36.1:

  1. Open 'Show Applications' -> 'All'
  2. Attempt to scroll through the pages using a touchpad.

  Expected result:
Scrolls through pages of applications one at a time.

  Actual result:
Scrolls to second page of applications but will go no further.
This happens whether two-finger or edge scrolling is used.

Using an actual mouse with a scroll wheel works as expected. Using this in
conjunction with the touchpad reveals horribly broken behaviour:
  - Clicking on the 'dot' for any of the pages will let the touchpad scroll at
most one page in either direction, if the mouse is not moved
  - Moving the physical mouse lets the 'momentum' of the touchpad scrolling
advance the list further as expected.

- Incidentally, the application menu doesn't honour the 'natural
- scrolling' setting for the touchpad in the mouse settings - I will file
- a separate bug report for this but it may be of interest for whoever
- looks at this.

** Description changed:

Steps to reproduce (Ubuntu 20.04, shell 3.36.1):
  1. Enable 'natural scrolling' for the touchpad in mouse and keyboard settings.
  2. Open 'Show Applications' -> 'All'
  3. Scroll
  4. Repeat 2 and 3 with natural scrolling unset

  Expectation:
Scrolling 'up' (moving fingers up) moves application icons up with natural
scrolling enabled and down with natural scrolling disabled.

  Actual outcome:
Scrolling 'up' moves the app icons down (and vice versa) regardless of the
natural scrolling setting for the touchpad.

- The scrolling behaves as expected when a normal mouse is used (i.e.
- natural scroll setting of mouse is obeyed).

Public bug reported:

I've edited "/usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/50-disable-guest.conf" so

[Bug 1776887] Re: Critical upstream bugfix missing in Ubuntu 18.04 - frequent Xorg crash after suspend

2019-11-07 Thread Alan Jenkins via ubuntu-bugs
That's not enough information. At this point you should report a new
bug, please.

Notice the linked bug #1760450 includes a crash trace. (Not saying for
sure you'd be able to do the same). The fatal signal is SIGBUS, as
opposed to the usual SIGSEGV or abort. If you've got a SIGSEGV or an
abort instead, you don't have this bug.

If you do, you can link to this bug for the historical reminder. (The
analysis of these crash traces is a bit unusual).

I'd be pretty surprised if there was a regression on this. Axboe
demanded a regression test for blktests, so it can't be exactly the
same. And the cause of the bug was something pretty silly during the
transition to blk-mq... I don't know why it would get introduced
elsewhere.

[Bug 1801470] [NEW] Doble password to login after screen blocked

2018-11-02 Thread Daniel Jenkins
Public bug reported:

After every the screen is blocked, I have to write twice the password.
The first time the top bar is available but the user as seen on the

[Bug 1801205] [NEW] Can't mount veracrypt volumes

Public bug reported:

Using mount from nautilus (open with) or right from Gnome Disk, the file
in question is "mounted" as a loop device. Therefore, no opening of that
container nor questions about how to open the file.

This is Ubuntu 18.10 from 18.04. Already tried 18.10 on a VM (Live

Also tryed Tail in order to see the Veracrypt property working.

Hi Vedant. Change the line in /etc/default/grub e.g.

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"

to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet scsi_mod.scan=sync"

and then re-run update-grub.

[Bug 874936] Re: Firefox menu bar under Unity(2D) is too slow for my fingers (on Core2!)

2018-07-30 Thread Alan Jenkins via ubuntu-bugs
Please do auto-close. I don't have a Unity install to test this on, 2D
or otherwise. I don't plan on using community-supported Unity, partly
because I think there were other reported bugs that I didn't hear
anything about.

Also, it looks as if the root issue is fixed for new Firefox profiles.
*If* I create a new profile, then the default folder when creating a
bookmark is "Other Bookmarks" (heh). So you don't end up with thousands
of items in the Bookmarks menu. Unless you deliberately asked for every
one of them.

I wouldn't say the occurrence was a one-off, seems clear from comments
that it was consistent. :-P.

2018-07-20 Thread Alan Jenkins via ubuntu-bugs
CurrentDmesg.txt:

[58189.152330] PM: suspend exit
[58189.162027] Read-error on swap-device (253:0:361608)
[58189.167038] Read-error on swap-device (253:0:361672)

"People die when they are killed". Specifically "Read-error on swap-
device" kills you with SIGBUS. Mystery solved.

I really expect if you looked at the crash, you would notice it is
SIGBUS, with si_code == BUS_ADRERR (2).  This means a read error when
trying to load a page of virtual memory back in from swap or from the
filesystem.

There's a common bug which matches this, so please read #1776887
"Critical upstream bugfix missing in Ubuntu 18.04 - frequent Xorg crash after
suspend".

I'm sure this applies to at least some users who marked themselves as
affected, or some duplicates of this bug. This particular kernel log
includes some other errors as well though, so I can't rule out that they
also have some relation.

[Bug 1760450] Re: [nvidia] Xorg crashed with signal 7 in _dl_fixup() from _dl_runtime_resolve_xsavec() called from nvidia_drv.so

2018-06-15 Thread Alan Jenkins via ubuntu-bugs
Thanks for your confirmation, Julien. I have asked Ubuntu to import the
proper fix from upstream and they responded very promptly. See:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1776887

They have posted a test kernel. I don't have a ubuntu install to test
it on - only a VM which cannot suspend. It *might* be useful if someone
wants to volunteer to try using the test kernel.

You could test that your normal suspend still works, and test the
command mentioned in the commit. I.e.

$ sudo -i
# dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null iflag=direct & \
while killall -SIGUSR1 dd; do sleep 0.1; done & \
  echo mem > /sys/power/state ; \
sleep 5; killall dd # stop after 5 seconds

On a "bad" kernel, any time you run this command it should show a
message about an IO error. On a "good" kernel, the system will appear
to suspend and resume, but there should be no IO error.

2018-06-15 Thread Alan Jenkins via ubuntu-bugs
Awesome. Thanks.

I can't test suspend in a VM, and I don't have a physical Ubuntu
install.

The block developers arranged a more convenient test for the underlying
issue in https://github.com/osandov/blktests/

Before (i.e. linux-image-4.15.0-23-generic):

$ sudo ./check block/016

@@ -1,2 +1,3 @@
 Running block/016
+dd: error reading '/dev/nullb0': Input/output error

After (i.e. 4.15.0-23.26~lp1776887):

$ sudo ./check block/016

I don't see any problem with the patched VM, though obviously it would
be nice to have someone test both normal suspend and the pm_test
reproducer on a physical install.

[Bug 1776887] Re: Critical upstream bugfix missing in Ubuntu 18.04 - frequent Xorg crash after suspend

2018-06-14 Thread Alan Jenkins via ubuntu-bugs
Sorry, it's not convenient for me to test Ubuntu at the moment.

I abuse the above instructions to assert that this bug is confirmed,
citing the URLs provided. (1: The patch+description linked for kernel
4.17, 2: the lack of fix evidenced in the link for kernel 4.15.0-24.26).

I appeal to authority based on me being the author of the fix, which was
merged to the Linux kernel :).

Furthermore, I do so on behalf of two Ubuntu users active on Ubuntu bug
linked above.[1] In the first instance, I analysed the crash dump and
explained the very distinct signature which it shows, indicating this
bug. The second user confirmed that they suffered this bug and used a
very specific workaround to avoid it.

[1] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1760450/

(The Ubuntu bug is marked as affecting 7 people overall. I am certain
this is an understatement. I mentioned in my comment in the bug, how
the nature of the crashes made them hard for users to identify. One
part is the same as the experience we had in Fedora. Automatically
reported crashes were not reliably detected as duplicates, because the
fatal SIGBUS signal can happen at a number of different points).

[Bug 1776887] [NEW] Critical upstream bugfix missing in Ubuntu 18.04 - frequent Xorg crash after suspend

2018-06-14 Thread Alan Jenkins via ubuntu-bugs
Public bug reported:

This upstream bug has been confirmed to affect Ubuntu users[1]. As per
the fix commit (below), the most frequent symptom is a crash of
Xorg/Xwayland, i.e. killing the entire GUI, when a laptop is woken from
system sleep. Frequency of the bug is described as once every few
days[2].

[1] E.g. this user confirms the bug & very specific workaround:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1760450/comments/11
[2] E.g. this log of crashes:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1553979#c23

This is a bug in blk-core.c. It is not specific to any one hardware
driver. Technically the suspend bug is triggered by the SCSI core -
which is used by *all SATA devices*.

The commit also includes a test which quickly and reliably proves the
existence of a horrifying bug.

I guess you might avoid this bug only if you have root on NVMe. The
other way to not hit the Xorg crash is if you don't use all your RAM, so
there's no pressure that leads to cold pages of Xorg being swapped.
Also, you won't reproduce the Xorg crash if you suspend+resume
immediately. (This frustrated my tests at one point, it only triggered
after left the system suspended over lunch :).

[Bug 1760450] Re: [nvidia] Xorg crashed with signal 7 in _dl_fixup() from _dl_runtime_resolve_xsavec() called from nvidia_drv.so

2018-05-29 Thread Alan Jenkins via ubuntu-bugs
Uh, if anyone else is affected by this, there's a trivial fix upstream
already (and a workaround). Hop to it, Ubuntu. gregkh is looking
disappointed at you :-). I checked, and it looks like you didn't apply
it to you 4.15 tree. See end for links to the fix etc.

For users: The workaround is to add "scsi_mod.scan=sync" on the kernel command
line (i.e. edit /etc/default/grub and run `update-grub`).

Please note

1. AFAICT this is near-universal.
It affects all desktop users of kernel 4.15/4.16 who use suspend
(and whose workloads use all their RAM).
It could be avoided by not using SCSI, but it does affect all systems with
root on SATA.

2. Although this is horrible when it happens (X crash) and can happen on a
near-daily basis,
it can be quite difficult for users to analyze and report. For example, the
crash doesn't
have one specific backtrace in Xorg. It tends to generate several
different backtraces,
non-deterministicly. Sometimes, making a coredump fails, presumably due to
the same bug
   that causes the crash.

I remember that Sosha had to make two attempts at reporting this bug
(though I don't remember what was wrong with the first one).

Also, it's triggered by a medium-term SIGALRM timer in Xorg.
This made it really annoying to reproduce, at the time when I didn't know
the root cause.
I was able to reproduce the memory pressure needed, but it didn't happen
when testing suspend+resume... only when I broke for lunch and left the
machine
   suspended for long enough :).

[Bug 1756984] Re: Xorg crashed with signal 7 in dl_new_hash()

2018-04-04 Thread Alan Jenkins via ubuntu-bugs
I strongly suspect this is the same bug in upstream kernel v4.15, which
causes this issue:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-
server/+bug/1760450/comments/6

I am basing this on the "signal 7" (SIGBUS), as this is relatively rare
on x86 [1]. Also that it occurs inside xorg_backtrace() - this is also
*supposed* to be relatively rare, because libunwind tries to use a
clever trick to avoid reading wild pointers and dying with a
segmentation fault [2].

[1] https://stackoverflow.com/questions/2089167/debugging-sigbus-on-x86-linux
[2] https://lwn.net/Articles/502864/

I would also predict that the original fault was caused by fetching the
first instruction of the function, but it looks like we don't have the
symbol information for it. (boo, nvidia).

[Bug 1760450] Re: Xorg crashed with signal 7 in _dl_fixup()

2018-04-04 Thread Alan Jenkins via ubuntu-bugs
Hi Ubuntu users! Signal 7 is SIGBUS. SIGBUS should be relatively
unusual on x86 [1].

[1] https://stackoverflow.com/questions/2089167/debugging-sigbus-
on-x86-linux

I'm excited to inform you that Fedora Linux users also started seeing
the same root problem. It is tied to the upgrade from kernel v4.14 to
v4.15.

Fedora bug report:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1553979

Arch Linux independently identified this as caused by the kernel upgrade:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=235027

It can happen after resume from suspend, not every time but maybe once
every three days. We have reports for both Xwayland and Xorg getting a
fatal SIGBUS in _dl_fixup(). (While this is actually a secondary crash
in xorg_backtrace(), we have a load of SIGBUS traces that have the same
primary trace as each other).

Notice the specific faulting instruction in disassembly you captured: it
is not performing a memory access!

=> 0x559c102a4060 :  sub$0xd8,%rsp

Instead, notice that this is the first instruction in the function
ErrorFSigSafe. This is a big common factor in our traces. (We actually
have several different traces captured, with the failing function
varying, often along the same call chain).

What's happening is a fault on the instruction fetch. You should be
able to confirm this if you look at the address which generates the
fault. (si_addr field of struct siginfo. I don't know where the Ubuntu
crash collector saves this information)

The kernel failed to load in the page which holds the program code at
this point. That's the real problem: some sort of transient IO error
during wakeup. Users sometimes see other symptoms of these IO errors as
well:

PM: resume devices took 1.017 seconds
Restarting tasks ...
Read-error on swap-device (253:1:836184)
PM: suspend exit
systemd-coredump[755]: Process 1356 (Xwayland) of user 42 dumped core.

and

Try running the remote X client using dbus-run-session(1), which I have
on my FreeBSD build of dbus:

$ ssh mybox
$ dbus-run-session -- gedit

I came across this thread looking for why ssh sessions in which I ran
/certain/ X clients would hang the session when I tried to exit. Now
that I know it's a dbus issue, I came across a dbus session wrapper
program that suits my needs perfectly. Now I can alias those naughty
commands while in an ssh session.

[Bug 1597263] [NEW] Mouse scroll has stopped working in Meld

2016-06-29 Thread Glenn Jenkins
Public bug reported:

When I spin the mouse wheel when focussed on Meld, it scrolls a couple
of lines, then stops. Scrolling will not work at all until I focus on
another window, then focus back, and then it'll scroll 2 lines and stop
again.

I am in the view where I am comparing two files, and the mouse is over
one of the panes (ie one file).

The mouse works perfectly in every other application - Firefox, PHP
Storm, Thunderbird, Terminal, etc.

[Bug 1527426] Re: Merge pepperflashplugin-nonfree (1.8.2) from Debian unstable (contrib)

2016-05-20 Thread Graham Jenkins
I've received a note from Alin Andrei suggesting that I'm having the
problem because: ".. there's no Google Chrome on 32bit any more .."

Actually, there is Chromium for 32-bit, and I have it installed on my
Xubuntu 16.04 machine. The problem is that pepperflashplugin-nonfree
doesn't manage to grab the flash plugin from the Google site. But one
can actually follow the screen prompts that come with Opera and download
Adobe flash; that makes it work .. but it's somewhat slow.

So pepperflashplugin-nonfree needs to be updated so it can grab an
appropriate plugin from somewhere when it finds itself running on a
32-bit machine!

[Bug 1579495] [NEW] Getpocket account doesnt stay

2016-05-08 Thread Daniel Jenkins
Public bug reported:

First, I had several accounts linked and with every upgrade or clean
install, the accounts remainded unreachable.

Had to erase "goa-1.0" and "libaccounts-glib" from .local in order to
enable the accounts (Remove and recreate doesn't work).

Finally, the pocket account doesn't create an account and dont know if its
active (it seems not since getpocket.com doesnt show me so (Using firefox
account).
Then, if I try to re-enable it, using a google account, it just simple doesnt
budge after I clic the option.

Any clue on how to debug that?

[Bug 1553432] Re: python-caja not reading from /usr/share/caja-python/extensions/

2016-03-15 Thread Matthew Jenkins
I appear to have confirmed it is the above bug.

I moved the extensions to my desktop. Then did sudo killall caja. Caja
reloaded and it was normal. I then copied the insync extension back in
and did sudo killall caja again. Caja reloaded but this time the insync
extension was working. I then copied deja in and reiterated. Now insync
did not work.

[Bug 1553432] Re: python-caja not reading from /usr/share/caja-python/extensions/

2016-03-15 Thread Matthew Jenkins
The insync dev confirmed it works. https://forums.insynchq.com/t
/insync-caja-not-working/4707/7

On freenode before filing a report I asked if anyone else used caja and
if python extensions were not working. Could it be related to
https://github.com/mate-desktop/python-caja/issues/22 ?

[Bug 1553432] Re: python-caja not reading from /usr/share/caja-python/extensions/

2016-03-14 Thread Matthew Jenkins
~/.local/share/caja-python/extensions does not exist.

ls -la /usr/share/caja-python/extensions/
total 56
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Mar 4 20:07 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Oct 21 12:50 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5827 Oct 21 10:56 deja.py
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 33813 May 1 2015 folder-color.py
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3720 May 1 2015 insync-caja-plugin.py
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 17 17:22 .placeholder

I don't know what deja.py does but there is definitely no color picker and
insync does show up.
