[Bug 659527] Re: xorg server crashes with nvidia-current
Seems to be in Natty. I got here googling for a solution to my X-crash- when-emacs-is-started problem. Uninstalling xfs did the trick. Hmm. After doing 'apt-get autoclean', 'apt-get autoremove' and 'apt-get install -f', things seems to be ok. Actually, I think I may have narrowed the problem down a bit. It also happens when the viewer is xpdf. However, the problem seems not to be with the download as such. For me, the problem consistently appear now if I left-click on a pdf-link, triggering either the automatic application startup, the automatic saving of the file, or the dialog for choosing between the two. However, flash does not break if I save directly, by right-clicking and choosing save link as instead! [Bug 88746] Re: ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices
Yes: Old ports are suddenly playing nice. I moved two devices to the new controller, one disk and one host (Dell LCD screen) to which I again added two disks. In addition, one disk is connected to an old port (on the motherboard.) All work with ehci_hcd at full speed. (About 20-30 MB/s for these disks.) I have stressed the system by copying large amounts (hundreds of GB) between all disks at the same time, and it all work. Note that before, all these disks, also those connected via the LCD monitor, was not operated properly by the kernel module. And as I said, even when the disks were turned off, these reset errors were written to the logs, from time to time. Note that there are lots of chips devices in my system, Seagate, Maxtor and WD disks, USB hosts with Intel ICH9 and Via chips. The new PCI-card that solved the problem has a Via-chip. So, I guess I can confirm your last statement, even though I have not tried different permutations of disks/ports. The first permutation worked, which I take as a strong indication that all others also will, since it was not picked specially. [Bug 88746] Re: ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices
I also caved in and inserted a new pci-card with a USB 2.0 controller and some ports. Two really surprising things happened: First, I would have thought it necessarry to disable the onboard (motherboard) USB controller, since that was the one not working with ehci_hcd. (I base this on the fact that I got the reset-errors even without using any USB devices connected to the ports, as if the host controller itself had problems...) This was not correct, even when this is enabled and ehci_hcd now loaded, everything works without a glitch, under high stress! Second, I thought the onboard (motherboard) USB controller/ports would be useless after disabling the controller in BIOS for these. The really strange thing is that now (since I did not need to disable USB in BIOS I tested this) the onboard USB ports suddenly work at full speed also. I simply do not understand how this can be. It is as if the mere presence of the new controller causes the problem to go away... -- ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/88746 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

andymc73, it may be that you are the first one to report having both a non-working and working Linux installation on exactly the same hardware at the same time, so your findings will be interesting. What kernel versions are the two installations using? (I would gladly revert to an older kernel if it would make my disks readable again. [Bug 88746] Re: ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices
Why is this not going to be fixed? [Bug 197762] Re: file transfer on USB disk slows down with gvfs
Same problem here. Really, really, really annoying. Actually worse than annoying: critical. [Bug 197762] Re: file transfer on USB disk slows down with gvfs
I think this has to do with problems with ehci-hcd, maybe in connection with particular kernels and or motherboards and or chipsets... not sure. When I remove this module, the drive works properly, maybe on 1.1-speeds, but at least it works...
