[Bug 105102] Cannot shutdown computer with Kubuntu Feisty

2007-04-18 Thread jwork123nl
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Executive summary:
command line power down works, from KDE it works in about 35% of all cases.

Details:

When I go to terminal 1 with CTRL-ALT-F1, log in as root and execute powerdown
now
the computer turns of, including showin immediately a nice Kubuntu logo. This
works.

When I select turn off from KDE the system logs out of X normally, including
playing the sound
and then the following happens:

20% of all cases: graphical garbage appears on top of screen and after a while
a brief
flash of the kubuntu logo appears, just before the computer powers down

15% of all cases: kubuntu logo is shown and shutdown proceeds normally

65% of all cases:
monitor looses input signal and goes to sleep, computer completely stuck, have
to
switch off manually by pressing power key for 7 seconds.

I seem to remember reading something like this a long time ago in the edgy
forums,
cannot find it. My feeling is that the

Operating system information:
Using Kubuntu Feisty, starting from Beta.

Using the ATI (and thus open source Radeon) display driver

System information:

Samsung 172T lcd, using DVI input
Radeon 9200SE (280) video card

I could never shutdown with Edgy, which was the reason I did not install it,
and kept with Dapper.
I hope that I will be able to shut down with Feisty!

[Bug 105102] Re: Cannot shutdown computer with Kubuntu Feisty

2007-04-17 Thread jwork123nl
Hi Alexander

Glad that I am not alone with this, I got no reaction at all up till now (also
not on posts on the feisty forum)
Like I said the problem does not occur when I boot with nosplash (it is
allright for me, I like looking at the system messages).

Like you, I can leave the X-session with e.g. CTRL-ALT-F1, then shutdown
manually.
When I logout manually from a console window in the graphical environment, it
also works, and I I even get a logout splash screen.

I guess that the problem is caused somehow by graphically logging out from X,
where the switch is made to the splashscreen
logout process.
In other words, the problem seems to be caused by something that was added by
the Kubuntu developers.
Let's hope they solve it.

[Bug 105102] More information about probable cause

2007-04-13 Thread jwork123nl
I am beginning to think that the problem is cause by the splashscreen inserted
by (K)ubuntu
when turning off the computer.
Ending X session works normally (as opposed to what I reported above)
The problem occurs when (K)ubuntu tries to show a splash screen.
Booting with option nosplash solves the problem

Can anybody confirm this?

[Bug 105102] Re: Cannot shutdown computer with Kubuntu Feisty

2007-04-10 Thread jwork123nl
I have to add that also selecting end session / log off user from kde does
not work.
So the problem occurs when I try to exit the X session in the normal manner,
from the graphical environment.
I never have a problem with aborting the X-session using CTRL-ALT-BKSPC, it
always starts up normally again then.

Worrying how things like this seem to regress so easily just before the RC

This critical SHOWSTOPPER BUG is still present in beta.

But let us see what the konqueror developers recommend here:
http://commit-digest.org/issues/2007-02-04/moreinfo/628618/

Extract:
Attention packagers! Please include this patch in new versions of your
khtml-3.5.6 packages. Web surfing experience can be considered broken without
it.

[Bug 78288] Re: kernel 2.6.20-5 doesn't boot with sata-hd

2007-03-04 Thread jwork123nl
I managed to get the kubuntu herd 5 live cd to work on my Asus p4p800 deluxe.
Here is the solution that I entered in the wiki at this location:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Asus_P4P800

You need to use F6 at the boot screen to add these command line options:
noapic nolapic irqpoll All three of them. Then it works.

I will add output of lspci -vv as separate file.

Hope this helps everybody who experiences these problems.
