[Bug 1673431] Re: Make kernel readable by non-root users

2024-05-15 Thread kolAflash
Still present on Ubuntu-20.04.6.

Workaround:
/etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d/z99_chmod_vmlinuz_kernel
##
# guestfs, see:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libguestfs/+bug/1673431
# Restricted to Ubuntu-20.04 kernel version 5.4.*. (newer Ubuntu versions
hopefully fix this)
post-invoke=if { test "$DPKG_HOOK_ACTION" = configure; }; then chmod g+r,o+r
/boot/vmlinuz-5.4.* 2>/dev/null || true; fi

[Bug 1970127] Re: Ubuntu-22.04 Live CD not booting on HP ENVY X360 notebook (Ryzen 7 3700U)

2022-04-24 Thread kolAflash
Booting with "safe graphics" worked.
And afterwards also normal booting worked.

Could this be something about live system persistence on the usb
storage?

Is there a way to completely disable persistence when booting the live system
from usb storage?
Maybe a boot parameter?

[Bug 1970127] [NEW] Ubuntu-22.04 Live CD not booting on HP ENVY X360 notebook (Ryzen 7 3700U)

2022-04-24 Thread kolAflash
Public bug reported:

The ubuntu-22.04-desktop-amd64.iso live cd does not boot on a HP ENVY
X360 notebook (Ryzen 7 3700U).

Model:
HP ENVY X360
13-ar0777ng
9YN58EA#ABD

After a few minutes the screen simply switches to black. No possibility
to get a console by pressing CTRL-ALT-F1, F2, ...

I removed the boot options "quiet splash" and recorded the boot via video.
(just ask if you need the full video)
I attach a significantly looking screenshot from that video, showing a kernel
bug message.

Currently the notebook runs with Ubuntu-20.04 using the Linux-5.11 HWE kernel.
But suspend to memory isn't working.

2020-06-15 Thread kolAflash
I'll have to give the computer to it's user in a few days.
After that I won't have the possibility to do extensive debugging.

So if you have any ideas for testing, please tell me!

I just tested Linux-5.8.0-rc1 but it didn't solved the problem.

[Bug 1881494] Re: [amdgpu] suspend to ram (standby) crashes amdgpu (Ryzen-7 Vega - HP Envy x360)

2020-06-04 Thread kolAflash
I downloaded linux-firmware-20200519.tar.gz and replaced /lib/firmware
with it's contents. (didn't use "make install")

And I can clearly reproduce the crash when no X is running. So there
might also be an X issue. But I initially opened this bug for linux,
because there's definitely a bug in the kernel (probably in the amdgpu
driver).

I attached another dmesg crash log where no X is running.

I made another attempt with a kernel from https://kernel.ubuntu.com

The dmesg looks slightly different. But I think, that the bug behaves a
little different every time. Sometimes I just get a black screen,
sometimes the picture freezes and sometimes I can still move the mouse
cursor over the frozen picture.

[Bug 1881494] Re: suspend to ram (standby) crashes amdgpu (Ryzen-7 Vega - HP Envy x360)

2020-05-31 Thread kolAflash
** Description changed:

  suspend to ram crashes amdgpu.
System is still accessible via SSH after resume from standby.
Happens when X is running (gdm/gnome with 3d acceleration) and also when X is
stopped.

+ Also the computer never really goes into standby. The cpu fan is running
+ all the time and the power button is fully lighted up. Nevertheless, I
+ need to press CTRL to "wake" it, so I can access it via SSH.
+
I'll attach the dmesg output of several attempts.
  This is the hardware:

https://store.hp.com/GermanyStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=9YN58EA=ABD=NTB
+ Tested EFI and BIOS bootmode.

Please let me know if I can help tracking this down.
I'm a software developer (sadly not a kernel developer), so you can ask dirty
technical questions ;-)

  Workaround:
- Enable hibernation (suspend to disk) and use instead of suspend to ram.
+ Enable hibernation (suspend to disk) and use instead of suspend to ram
(standby).

- What didn't helped:
- Kernel parameters (some actually prevented the system from booting):
no_console_suspend nomodeset amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1 init_on_free=0 idle=nowait
amd_iommu=flush
+ What didn't help:
+ Kernel parameters: no_console_suspend nomodeset amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1
init_on_free=0 idle=nowait amd_iommu=flush
  echo mem > /sys/power/state
  systemctl start suspend.target
  echo 0 > /sys/power/pm_async
+ Upgrading kernel from 5.4 to: 5.6.0-1010-oem
+
+ Using the kernel parameters
+ no_console_suspend nomodeset amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1 init_on_free=0
+ idle=nowait amd_iommu=flush
+ and doing
+ echo mem > /sys/power/state
+ before suspend made the system acutally not crash.
+ Nevertheless, the cpu fan and the power button stay full on/lighted. So the
system doesn't really go to standby either.
+
+ I'll try to find the minimal combination of kernel parameters.
+ nomodeset seems to be essential, but not sufficient.
+ Without nomodeset the system wakes again for a few seconds, but freezes a
moment later (ssh still accessible).

[Bug 133133]

2014-12-01 Thread kolAflash
Currently Firefox 33 is using org.freedesktop.FileManager1 to open a
filemanager. Sadly, only Nautilus implements this interface. It's not
just opening a filemanager but also bidirectional communication with the
caller.

https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=904229#c2

Is Firefox using this bidirectional communication feature or something
else, special from org.freedesktop.FileManager1 ?

If Firefox isn't using the special features of org.freedesktop.FileManager1,
just change Firefox to use xdg-open $DIRECTORY to open a filemanager or to
look up the default filemanager in:
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list (has priority)
/usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache

If Firefox uses special features from org.freedesktop.FileManager1:
In a perfect world, Firefox should check if Nautilus is set as the default
filemanager. E.g. running xdg-mime query default inode/directory which checks
the files:
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list (has priority)
/usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache

Alternatively, Firefox could check if DESKTOP_SESSION is set to gnome.
I wouldn't suggest to check for DESKTOP_SESSION=KDE, because there are a lot of
other desktop environments which also use other filemanagers then Nautilus.

If the results is negative (depended on which strategy was chosen), Firefox
should use the default filemanager (either the on set by the system or set by
the user). This can be done by running xdg-open $DIRECTORY or looking up the
default filemanager in:
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list (has priority)
/usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache

http://askubuntu.com/questions/451953/php-pear-is-not-working-after-upgrading-to-ubuntu-14-04

This doesn't helps (actually the mentioned patch seems to be already applied to
the Ubuntu files):
http://cweiske.de/tagebuch/pear-php-5.5.htm

This workaround seems to work for me (still playing around with it). It
probably also works for pear install.

# First run pear to download the packages. It will probably put the packages
into
# /build/buildd/php5-5.5.9+dfsg/pear-build-download/
# but it can't install them.
$ pear upgrade

# Un-Gzip the downloaded packages.
$ gunzip /build/buildd/php5-5.5.9+dfsg/pear-build-download/*.tar

# Now pear should be able to work with the pure tar-files.
$ pear upgrade /build/buildd/php5-5.5.9+dfsg/pear-build-download/*.tar

So by this workaround I guess, the bug's reason is something about the gzip
compression.

[Bug 696706]

2011-03-27 Thread kolAflash
Confirming the bug for:
my notebook, openSUSE 11.4 i586, updated from 11.3
my pc, openSUSE 11.4 x86_64, updated from 11.3

On both, Unison worked fine on openSUSE 11.3.

Workaround:
Install the new Unison version 2.40.61-20.1 from (date 2011-03-26):
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/network/openSUSE_Factory/
It's working fine!

[Bug 696706]

2011-03-27 Thread kolAflash
P.S. Maybe you need to install lablgtk2 as a dependency for Unison version
2.40.61-20.1 from:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/network/openSUSE_Factory/

The INSTALL-README of Unison 2.40.61 tells, you need lablgtk2 to
compile. But currently lablgtk2 is not a dependency of the package from
that repository.

[Bug 493517] Re: kdm crashing because of gdm and x11-common 1:7.4+3ubuntu10

2009-12-08 Thread kolAflash
So here are my log files.

I did two system-startups. One with the x11-common version
1:7.4+3ubuntu10 (all files for this are marked with failure) and one
with the x11-common version 1:7.4+3ubuntu7 (marked with ok).

Additional i did the lspci.

[Bug 493517] [NEW] kdm crashing because of gdm and x11-common 1:7.4+3ubuntu10

2009-12-07 Thread kolAflash
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: x11-common

Since a few days, after updating to ureadahead, my kdm login didn't
worked any more. I could find a workaround to it, but in the end i
didn't found out what all that had to do with ureadahead.

I already posted a lot about this problem here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8449299
and here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ureadahead/+bug/484677

So to me is seems like x11-common version 1:7.4+3ubuntu10 and gdm try to detect
if the x-session starts correctly and if not they try to start a failsave
session.
So if you have kdm and gdm installed, because of something gdm and x11-common
doesn't seem to detect the running kdm session and try to start an failsave
x11-session.

By this, you get a black screen with a non blinking cursor on the upper
left.

As a workaround, you can:
- switch to gdm OR
- uninstall gdm OR
- downgrade x11-common to 1:7.4+3ubuntu7

This all happend on a system which was updated from 8.10 to 9.04 to 9.10. I'm
using all the KDE-Stuff (including kdm) but Gnome is installed too.
If you need more information, please take a look at the links I posted. There
is also some stuff from my xorg.log!

Thanks!
kolAflash

[Bug 484677] Re: init: ureadahead-other main process terminated with status 4

2009-12-04 Thread kolAflash
I got a similar one!

Already described everything here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1343648

In short terms:
- I can't login anymore (black screen, non-blinking cursor on the upper left,
no access to tty1-6).
- I have an intel graphic.
- And maybe interesting: My /home is on an nfs drive. But just /home!
- And I also updated my Ubuntu from 8.10 to 9.04 and then to 9.10.
- The day before this happend the first time (2. Dec 2009), Ubuntu installed
that sreadahead and ureadahead packages. So the first restart after that
updates (the next day), the problem accoured the first time.

Normally I'm using KDE and kdm (but didn't installed Kubuntu, just installed
kde using synaptic). So after accessing the PC using ssh and changing from kdm
to gdm everything was fine again.
Did anybody else also see this behavior (specially that kdm - gdm thing)?

Thanks!
