Same issue here (in Gnome) on a Gateway M3708 laptop. Laptop has an "ATI Radeon Xpress 200M " video card.
In Gnome, going to System->Logout with result in a blank screen and a system hard lock. However, this ONLY happens with the proprietary ATI drivers.
