[Bug 1831599] [NEW] No display activity when coming out of powersave ("kernel BUG at mm/slub.c:296!")

2019-06-04 Thread luca_ing
Public bug reported:

Since a few weeks, my displays won't wake up from display powersave. The
machine stays responsive via SSH.

This first occurred on Ubuntu 18.04, and keeps happening on 18.10 (which
I had updated to in the hopes of fixing the issue that way).

The only escape I've found from this state is via magic SysRq.

It can be triggered reliably by waiting for the screensaver to kick in
(e.g. overnight).

[Bug 1568222] [NEW] chromium depends on libgnome-keyring0

2016-04-08 Thread luca_ing
Public bug reported:

Observation:
Chromium depends on libgnome-keyring0

$ apt-cache rdepends libgnome-keyring0  | grep chromium
  chromium-browser
  chromium-browser

Expectation:
It doesn't depend on it.

Rationale:
The issue is: I installed Lubuntu, not Ubuntu. I don't use Gnome. For these
reasons gnome-keyring doesn't acutally work correctly for me, rather it
interferes with gnupg-agent, inserting itself in the middle of the password
handling. So I would like to get rid of it, only to find that quite a few
packages depend on gnome-keyring for nor obvious reason.

This can't be a hard dependency of course, since Chromium on other platforms
doesn't even have gnome-keyring available, so I see no reason to enforce it
here.
This dependency didn't exist in Ubuntu 12.04.

[Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes

2012-02-26 Thread luca_ing
@Gwendal: I notice you've been quiet for a while. I suppose you've run out of
ideas, and since your own box is stable, you have no way of testing. I know it
must be frustrating for you to fight such a persistent bug. But do you think
you could make another try, or maybe make some suggestions?
I would be willing to help track down this bug.

Unfortunately, this bug is so disruptive to me that I am considering
ditching Mint/MGSE/whatever causes this. Mind you this is not some kind
of stupid threat - it's just that this is my main work machine, and I
can't work with being interrupted up to every few minutes.

Interestingly, the bug never appears on my notebook. This is a pretty
slow box with Intel HD graphics and a Core2 Solo processor - maybe Wei
En was right in his suspicion that it occurs on faster graphics
adapters.

Allow me to post a summary of my situation in the hope that we find something
we missed before:
Versions:
libglib2.0-0 is at 2.30.2-4ubuntu1~oneiric1
gnome-shell is at 3.2.2.1-0ubuntu1~oneiric1
gnome-shell-common is at 3.2.2.1-0ubuntu1~oneiric1
fglrx-updates is at 2:8.911-0ubuntu0.1 (I tried several others, no change)

Hardware:
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
ATI Radeon HD 5700 graphics
I have a dual-screen setup <- we have never discussed this before

My observation is that this bug seems to happen in conjunction with creation of
windows. I say this because it may also bite if a message box opens. Also
frequently when opening the overview.
Crash frequency also varies: there may be times when the intervals are short
(say, 3) minutes, and then I may go for an hour or longer without a crash.
Probably depending on whether I open many windows - I never got a crash while
just watching movies.
I use realatively few programs. Firefox, Terminal, virt-manager, totem, Remimma.

[Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes

2012-02-18 Thread luca_ing
I just noticed something (that I should have long ago):

If gnome-shell crashes, I just restart it from a virtual terminal, using:
DISPLAY=:0.0 gnome-shell --replace

If this crashes again, I find the following error message:

Feb 18 18:26:25 godzilla kernel: [ 7721.889237] gnome-shell[5951]:
segfault at 10007 ip 7fd9d041c0a8 sp 7fffd85f88d0 error 4 in

to compile with the following errors:
ERROR: 1:1: error(#105) #version must occur before any other statement in the
program
ERROR: error(#273) 1 compilation errors. No code generated
Segmentation Fault

So this is apparently to do with hardware acceleration. I use fglrx as
the graphics driver.

[Bug 874489] Re: compizConfig crash whole unity by only displaying settings

2011-10-31 Thread luca_ing
I discovered what makes Unity hang:

It turns out there is a file ~/.config/compiz-1/compizconfig/config
Before the problem occurs, it's empty.
After the problem appears, it contains

If you delete these lines, Unity works again.

One more data point:
I've been using Evolution since Ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04, but I've only started to
see this problem now, with 10.10. All distribution updates were actual updates,
not reinstalls, so the configuration and data directories should have stayed
unchanged.
Curious.

[Bug 632881] Re: 9.10 and 10.4 freeze soon after startup

2010-09-08 Thread luca_ing
Assuming your observation about the temperature alarm is relevant, some more
information about your system might be useful. Can you tell me make and model
(particularly if it's a notebook)?
Is there an obvious difference (audible difference in fan speeds, for example)
between 9.04 and 10.04?

Also, some more info is necessary to try and debug this. Could you please
1) attach the file /var/log/messages
2) open a terminal, run cat /proc/cpuinfo and paste the output

Best,
Luca

[Bug 632515] [NEW] kile installation automatically pulls in lilypond-doc, which is 399MB in size

2010-09-07 Thread luca_ing
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kile

Observation:
When I use synaptic to install kile, it automaticallly pulls in the suggested
package lilypond (which I have no intention on ever using), and lilypond in
turn suggests lilypond-doc. Using the default settings, these get installed
automatically.
Not only is this over the top, but lilypond-doc is 142MB to download, 399MB
installed.
Considering that the whole download synaptic suggested to install kile was
216MB, about 2/3 of that were entirely unnecessary.

Expectation:
In general, fewer packages of almost no relevance should be selected for
installation automatically. Whether this is achieved by cutting down on
suggestions or by setting the package manager to not automatically install
suggested packages can be debated.

Suggestion:
As an immediate fix, don't recommend lilypond from kile. Those who know it and
want to use it will have no trouble explicitly selecting it.

This might actually be a general bug against the Ubuntu packaging
system, which I personally find too generous at times.

[Bug 425372] Re: GeForce 7050 PV does not work on karmic alpha-5 - shows video corruption

2009-11-12 Thread luca_ing
OBSERVATION:

Happens to me too.

Datapoint: lspci says the Adapter is:
nVidia Corporation C68 [GeForce 7050 PV / nForce 630a] (rev a2)

I got a garbled screen on X startup, but I could drop to console and manually
install nvidia-glx the way detailed in comment #9 .
I didn't try to boot into safe mode, so no idea whether that would have worked.

EXPECTATION:
X should start without trouble, perhaps by falling back to a safe default.

I had already tried this, my permissions made sense.

I have finally given in and reinstalled Ubuntu from scratch some days ago. Now
everything works as expected.

Still strange stuff.

[Bug 368959] Re: USB devices is not being automounted after connect it

2009-07-15 Thread luca_ing
An interesting observation:
I use kmail for mail, and its Save Attachment dialog displays my USB drive as
an external device. If I click on it, it gets mounted as expected, and at that
instant, gnome acts as if it just realized it had been plugged in and pops open
an action dialog. It is then listed in the sidebar as an external drive, just
as I would expect in the first place, and is accessible (and unmountable)
through nautilus.

Suspicion:
I now have the impression it the reason might be KDE and GNOME fighting over
the USB devices.
Will try and investigate further.

[Bug 368959] Re: USB devices is not being automounted after connect it

2009-05-15 Thread luca_ing
Yet more info:
I've now discovered that while my harddrive automounts, it can't be unmounted
through nautilus. Instead it tells me "Device to unmount is not in
/media/.hal-mtab so it is not mounted by HAL", and indeed, /media/.hal-mtab is
empty.

Odd.

One more data point:

My USB harddrive (formatted with ext3) now automounts as expected. It didn't do
that before.
Other USB devices still don't.

I suspect this change is connected with software updates I did
yesterday, but I haven't found an obvius package. I'm attaching the apt-
log.

2009-05-07 Thread luca_ing
BTW, calling gnome-mount from the shell works as expected, the device is
mounted and the usual "what would you like to do?" window is displayed.
So it doesn't seem to be a permissions problem or something like that,
just the information about newly inserted devices gets stuck somewhere.

[Bug 368959] Re: USB devices is not being automounted after connect it

2009-05-07 Thread luca_ing
I wonder if this is caused by two automounters fighting over the
devices?

It's a long shot, but I have both the ubuntu and kubuntu metapackages
installed, and perhaps this is the root cause. Mind you, only one user
is logged in at all times, so KDE and Gnome never run in parallel -
except for the fact that I use some KDE programs all the time.

For reference, I'm pasting the output of ps ax, in the hope that it
might provide a clue.

[Bug 368164] Re: external hard disk doesn't mount(is not recognized)

2009-05-07 Thread luca_ing
Can you see the drive if you go to computer:/// in Nautilus? (Places ->
Computer)?
Are you able to mount it manually, using the command line?
If yes, this looks like a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/368959

[Bug 372496] Re: cannot mount usb sticks after upgrade

2009-05-07 Thread luca_ing
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 368959 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/368959

It seems to be a proper bug after all, and one that I suffer from myself
:)

I'll mark it as a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/368959 and keep digging for a
solution.

[Bug 372496] Re: cannot mount usb sticks after upgrade

2009-05-07 Thread luca_ing
Hi Rich,

apparently we need some more information to understand this problem.
To be honest, at the moment it seems rather more like a configuration problem
than a bug to me, but we'll try to work this out.

I missed something the first time: your fstab is still not entirely correct:
The lines
/dev/sdg /media/usb1 rw,user,noauto 0 0
/dev/sdh /media/usb2 rw,user,noauto 0 0

are missing a filesystem type like this (assuming they use FAT):
/dev/sdg /media/usb1 vfat rw,user,noauto 0 0
/dev/sdh /media/usb2 vfat rw,user,noauto 0 0

Could you please do the following:

- post the output of lsusb
- post the result an attempt at manually mounting one of your USB devices:
sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdg /mnt
(this example is assuming the device has a VFAT filesystem)
- post the output of dmesg, once more

Thanks a lot for helping us.

Best,
Luca

[Bug 372496] Re: cannot mount usb sticks after upgrade

2009-05-06 Thread luca_ing
Hi, thanks for taking the time to report problem.
It seems this is not a bug but simply a typo in your /etc/fstab

Instead of "nonauto", you need to use "noauto" (note: *no* instead of *non*).
Correcting this should solve your problem. If it doesn't please reopen this bug
report by clicking on the current status, under the Status column, and change
the Status back to "New".

Thanks again, and don't hesitate to submit bug reports in the future.

Best regards,
Luca

[Bug 368959] Re: USB devices is not being automounted after connect it

2009-05-03 Thread luca_ing
I, too, see this as a regression form 8.10.

I'm using a 9.04 fresh install, and none of my USB devices automount
anymore even though this worked flawlessly in 8.10. Behaviour is exaclty
as described by the original reporter.

I've attached the requested logs.

HTH.

BTW, I'm considering filing a bug, since phonon causes a lot of trouble
for me.
