[Bug 999742] [NEW] Partitions displayed as removable devices

2012-05-15 Thread mac.ryan
Public bug reported:

This is my /etc/fstab:

# / was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=my-uuid-here  /ext4
defaults,relatime,discard,errors=remount-ro0 1
# /home was on /dev/sdb1 during installation
UUID=my-uuid-here  /homeext4  defaults,relatime
   0 2
# /home/mac/runtime was on /dev/sda3 during installation
UUID=my-uuid-here  /media/runtime-mac   ext4  defaults,relatime,discard
   0 2

sda1 and 3 are ext4 partitions of the same SSD, while sdb1 is an ext4
partition of a regular spinning HD.

My problem is that while the mounting process works flawlessly, the sda3
partition is displayed as a removable device in gnome (although of
course a regular user can't even unmount it).

[Bug 999742] Re: Partitions displayed as removable devices

2012-05-15 Thread mac.ryan
Thank you for the extra-quick follow up to the bug report!

Interesting observation about SATA being hot-pluggable. Still, I think
that would explain *why* the partition shows up like it does, but I
would argue that if the behaviour is intended, I disagree with the
design choice that was made for at least two reasons:

1. you might well remove a device, but not a single partition,
2. the partition is mounted with the nouser option at boot time, so its typical
usage won't be that of a removable device such a usb stick or external hard
drive that a user can plug/unplug freely, but rather it will be handled by the
sysadmin via CLI.
3. SATA is taking over desktop computing, and users would simply be alienated
by having their internal drives listed among the removable ones.

IMO, a good compromise would be to display as removable only those
partitions that the user has the possiblity to mount/unmount. I am
unaware how the fedora team solved the issue in v17 though.

Anyhow: I just wrote the above to illustrate my own thinking and support
debate. I would be very interested in reading alternative takes on this.
:)

[Bug 893590] Re: Control-C causes LightDM to restart in a Multiseat configuration

2012-05-13 Thread mac.ryan
I see what you mean, and I will understand if you will change back the
status of the bug. My rationale in changing the status was the following
though:

1. I think it is important for people using launchpad to know at first
glance if an issue has been solved or not, a bit like prepending
[solved] to the topic of a thread in a forum.

2. The documentation says This option is only useful when debugging the
server, but per se -keeptty prevent tty detachment i.e. it's not a
debugging mode in the typical sense of the expression.

However I shall repeat that I will understand if you´ll change the
status of the bug. It would be useful if launchpad would offer a
workaround available flag for the bugs though... this would really be
a closer description of where this bug stands! :)

Totally support this.

Especially when sharing settings, there might be single files that can

bookmarks...].

[Bug 667203] [NEW] Gmail shows online contacts but messages are not delivered to me / others do not see me online

2010-10-27 Thread mac.ryan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I am using 10.10 and although I presently rolled back to the standard repo,
until a few minutes ago I was on the PPA.
(So I am presently running Installed: 2.32.0-0ubuntu2)

Empathy connects to my gmail account and I can see my contact going on
and off line. I can even send messages to them (they receive them
without problems), but their answers (or any messages they send to me,
for what it matters) are never reaching empathy. Instead, I get an
e-mail from g-mail telling me that I got a message from the chat (as it
happens when one is effectively off-line and somebody tries to chat with
him/her).

I am unsure since when this problem is happening (it was a little bit I
was not using empathy). I can surely say that prior to upgrade to
Maverik everything was working fine, though.

Miscellany info on my system that I don't know if could help:
- I have the AWM mail applet checking for new mail on the same account every
couple of minutes.
- After upgrading to Maverik, I deleted my .gnome2 and .gnomeconf dirs and
re-configured all my applications (so I also re-created the accounts for
empathy)
- I have the firewall on (gufw)

[Bug 391419] Re: Media Keys doesn't work while menu on windows are open

Hi Pedro, thank you for the pointer to the gnome bug description.

Although I understand the logic of marking this report invalid because
on gnome the same one has been marked not a bug, it still escape my
understanding why this behaviour is not a bug. I agree with the user who
reported the bug on gnome: Is there any explanation why popups are so
greedy? To my understanding these keys should be always available, like
the brightness control keys.

Thank you.

[Bug 541861] Re: 10.04 live cd doesn't works in acer travelmate 243LC

2010-08-15 Thread mac.ryan
*The following fix works for the Acer Travelmate 2350 and Ubuntu 10.04
32 bit desktop standard installation CD*

In short:
1) At the screen with a keyboard and stickfigure, press Enter to get to the
menu.
2) Hit Enter to select your language, and then press F6 and then Esc.
3) Add i915.modeset=1 after quiet splash.
4) Press Enter to boot the LiveCD.

The page with the instructions on how to make the fix also on a non-liveCD
system is here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes

The link provided might prove itself useful also for other laptops, as
the introductory paragraph states: X freezes (GPU lockups) are being
experienced on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips. We experimented with
several different settings but could not find a combination which
resolved all issues for all 8xx owners. Below are some of the settings
that can be changed if the combination we picked for the release did not
work for you.

HTH,

Absolutely yes.

It seems like there are certain application that block the propagation
of a keypressed event to others. Beside the Gnome menu, another one I
can think of is GnomeDo. If you are familiar with it: once the dialog
for entering the first letters of the command pops up, the media keys do
not sort any effect.

[Bug 434050] Re: flash not running in 9.10 alpha 64 bit

2009-10-30 Thread mac.ryan
Just wishing to share a workaround that is prooving helpful in my case
(at least on youtube.com).

You first rightclick and keeping the button pressed drag the mouse, then
you can left-click without problem. After the first click, the procedure
needs to be repeated for further left-clicking.

[Bug 457654] Re: Guake appears at the middle of the screen and not in the top of the screen

2009-10-29 Thread mac.ryan
Confirm:
1. Bug affects Karmic RC
2. Workaround suggested by Jeff in #8 works

For those that - like me - took a moment to get what CCSM means, the
answer is CompizConfig Setting Manager available in the standard repos
and appearing in the System/Preferences hierarchies.

[Bug 175233] Re: Evolution hangs with Formatting Message after several hours

2009-08-22 Thread mac.ryan
Ubuntu Jaunty 64 bit, updated to present date.

A couple of additional info:

1. The problem also presents itself with two POP accounts (gmail). So,
it does not seem necessarily related to exchange, IMAP or similar.

2. For me the culprit does not seem to be evolution but evolution-
data-server-2.26. In fact even killing the evolution client, won't
restore my system normal behaviour. I have first to issue sudo killall
evolution-data-server-2.26 and then I can open evolution again and work
normally.

Annoying, indeed... :(

[Bug 364745] Re: blogtk crashes on start

2009-07-11 Thread mac.ryan
Alas, it did not work for me. I followed the same procedure followed by
K Slade but also the new version installed from the PPA generate
_nearly_ the same error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File /usr/bin/blogtk, line 1245, in module

File /usr/lib/python2.6/ConfigParser.py, line 531, in get
raise NoSectionError(section)
ConfigParser.NoSectionError: No section: 'Default Server'

Notice that it says Default Server and not Default, and somewhere in
the thread I noticed that was one of the modifications done to patch the
software.

Well... good effort though! :)

[Bug 321126] Re: Fan constantly running - Dell XPS M1530

2009-06-09 Thread mac.ryan
Just to mention that I am experiencing the same problem with DELL XPS
M1710 on ubuntu 64 bit (both 8.10 and 8.04).

The system randomly get the fans running at full speed despite the
system monitor report CPU usage below 25% and temperature below 40
degrees.

When the fans kick in, the system slow down so much that the only viable
option is rebooting; besides, the CPU and GPU hibernate in the real
sense of the word, with their temperature plummeting below 25 degrees.

On ubuntu forums there has been some speculation the problem might be
related to the graphic card. I have an nVidia GeForce Go 7950 GTX
running proprietary driver version 180.44

[Bug 182927] Re: [needs-packaging] FreeMind 0.9.0 beta 15

2008-11-30 Thread mac.ryan
I simply would like to inform those interested in this topic, that -
while we all wait for the packaging of the latest beta - the procedure
to create binaries from the source is *really* easy. More or less it
works like this:

1) Download the source and uncompress the file
2) Install ant [sudo apt-get install ant]
3) Move into the source code directory
3) Run ant dist
4) The newly created freemind.sh is the executable you need

I used the Sun Java 6 (installed via ubuntu-restricted-extras package)

Hope this can help somebody here. :)

[Bug 298430] [NEW] Bluetooth in Ibex has inconsistent behaviour

2008-11-15 Thread mac.ryan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bluetooth

RELATED BUGS - This bug is possibly related - but not the same as -
#283064, #292030 and others mentioning problems in connecting devices to
computer via bluetooth.

TESTING - This bug has been verified on two machines, both of them
running on Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 x64 (one with AMD and one with
Intel chipsets), connecting with different BlueTooth adapters to
different devices (Nokia 5300 and PalmOne Tungsten T5).

DESCRIPTION - Bluetooth adapter is properly recognised in all cases, and I can
access the preference tab and configure various parameters. There are then a
number of possibilities on different stages of process:
1) Visibility: while the computer is consistently always visible to the
devices, the devices are visible to the computer only at times.
2) Pairing: pairing never works when launched from the computer. It *sometimes*
works when initiated from the device. Once the device is in the list of known
devices, pairing *never happens*, even if I remove the computer from the list
of paired items on the device.
3) Sending files (via OBEX push). This has *never* happened, in either way.
4) Browsing files on the device from the computer: this has happened only once
and I could not reproduce the behaviour although I tried various times. The
only time I succeded, I managed to download 2 megs of pics from the telephone
at about 50 K/s. After that, I closed the nautilus windows with the browsed
directory and I could not reopen it anymore.

COMMON ERROR MESSAGES - (Translated back into English from i18n):
1) When trying to browse the files on the device: It is impossible to show
obex://[my-id-device-here]/ - Error: connexion to the device lost - Choose
another viewer(?) and retry.
2) When trying to send files to the device: An error has occurred:
org.openobex.Error.Cancelled

I am positive the device are OK as I can exchange files and data between
them without problems. I am positive the BT adapters work as they work
when attached to XP machines.

[Bug 216797] Re: Touchpad in Dell XPS M1530 entirely unusable - Hardy Beta

2008-07-13 Thread mac.ryan
Dylan, I believe you can avoid re-editing the kernel option every time
you get a kernel update by inserting i8042.nomux=1 in your default
kernel options in the menu.lst file (it's in the commented part of
automagic). I did not try it yet myself as there has not been a kernel
update since I modified my wife's computer configuration. Just my two
cents... :)

[Bug 216797] Re: Touchpad in Dell XPS M1530 entirely unusable - Hardy Beta

2008-07-05 Thread mac.ryan
Even wiht the kernel options as described, there are instances in which
the touchpad get crazy.

The problem seems to occur only when multiple windows on the desktop are
opened and login/logout seems to fix the problem. If not logging out,
after some times - with no recurrent pattern (or at least none that I
noticed yet) - the situation reverts to normality.

[Bug 182927] Re: FreeMind 0.9.0 beta 15

2008-02-19 Thread mac.ryan
I very very much second this request too... I never used a single
stable release of freemind for years: the development cycle is - alas
- very slow, with the beta staying such for months, if not years, but
the quality of those is normally very good, and the bugs - if any major
- are essentially in relation to the experimental features, and not to
the legacy one.

Besides, in the repos the only comparable available software is
Kdissert. Comparable means that people can compare the two, and FreeMind
wins 100:1 against kdissert... without counting the annoyances of
running a KDA app in a gnome environment.

Looking forward to the upgrade, then, and thanks to brettalton for
having brought this up. FM is an awesome programme and aid for visual
thinkers! :)

[Bug 120771] It's an Ubuntu problem, not an OpenOffice.org one...

2007-06-18 Thread mac.ryan
I just got an answer from the support at OpenOffice.org:

[quote]
This is not reproducible with native OOo for Linux.
This is a problem of your certain Linux distribution, ubuntu running the
by-packed OOo build. In this case, please refer to the distributors support or
even run the native OOo builds which can be downloaded from Openoffice.org.

[Bug 109919] FIXED

2007-05-17 Thread mac.ryan
The bug seems to have been fixed already, still, if you are interested:

The exact steps can be found to the forum thread linked in the original
report. For brevity, here's a quotation:

---
I dragged a copy of the terminal icon (gnome-terminal) from the Applications
menu, onto the panel at the top. I am using it to open an ssh session to
another computer automatically with

gnome-terminal -e ssh -Y etc...

and that works, but I wanted to rename it. I change it's name and comment in
properties, but it just keeps reverting back to the original name and comment.
I have other launch icons on the panel, like one for Thunderbird email client,
and those can be renamed.
---

Additionally, I also tired to create a fresh launcher (from the scratch)
but the name would not change either.

I assume at that date I was using ubuntu feisty 64bit already (otherwise
ubuntu edgy 32). I don't know about other users reporting the bug.
However, I tried now to repeat the behaviour described, and I couldn't
replicate it anymore. I assume it might have been fixed by some upgrades
between the bug report and now.

[Bug 109919] Terminal launchers cannot be renamed

2007-04-25 Thread mac.ryan
Public bug reported:

Normally, it is possible to create/rename a launcher, change its
description and add it to the pane or desktop. With terminal (gnome-
terminal) this is not possible, as it will keep on reverting its name to
the original one, no matter what one tries. The bug is being discussed
in a forum discussion: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=422081
