I installed linux-image-extra-virtual When I ls /lib/modules/3.0.0-12-virtual/kernel/fs/reiserfs/ I can see reiserfs.ko is there. I had this issue some months ago with 10.04 and I came across this thread. I followed the steps above to blacklist rt2800usb and then installed the backports compat wireless package and things worked fine. Today, I upgraded to 10.10 and it all fell apart again. I made sure I had the correct backports package, tried both with and without blacklisting rt2800usb, still won't work. Interestingly, NetworkManager does actually detect the device and does detect various access points - but is just unable to connect to any of them.
