[Bug 348905] Re: GeForce4 420 Go issue

2010-10-12 Thread marfal
I was running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid on my Toshiba 2410-601 satellite which
has the nvidia geforce4 420 go 32mb card installed. Following the usual
post install fiddle to enable the restricted driver (version-96) and
then set resolution and get it to recognise the screen as a DFP and not
CRT via a custom EDID (see xorg.conf below), I had full 3D graphics
acceleration running.

However since upgrading to 10.10 Maverick the restricted driver
(Additional Drivers) is unable to locate or suggest any suitable drivers
for my system. If I manually install the version -96 driver it is not
used by the system and I'm still left with basic graphics.

Is there anything I can do or would I be better off reverting back to
lucid?

[Bug 573290] Re: [Lucid AMD64] Dual monitor distortion / crash - ATI mobility Radeon X1400

2010-09-05 Thread marfal
running AMD + ATI radeon graphics card - ok on single monitor
(1280x1024), but when extended to two monitors (2560x1024) screen became
fuzzy (horizontal flicker/wobble).

Found this post:

http://www.niccolofavari.com/ubuntu-10.04-lucid-issues-with-external-
monitor-and-ati-radeon-card

Solution

I just did the following (on a bare install of Ubuntu 10.04)
Fire up the terminal and type

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf
a blank file will open up. Type in the following.

options radeon modeset=0
Save, exit and reboot.

This worked for me (although no accelerated Graphics).

Quick fix, now that new NVIDIA drivers are in the Ubuntu repositories.

 sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-180

It should uninstall the NVIDIA 177 driver and install the 180 version.
Then reboot your machine and you should be using the new 180 version of the
driver... And OpenOffice menus and buttons work fine.

#295991 (text disappears under compiz in intrepid) or #269904 (Screen
refresh problems with nvidia on intrepid) : is it me, or is your problem
 a problem of non-screenshotable flickering/text blinking ?

I also like the new ability to change the led colour, very nice.

[Bug 286932] Re: openoffice and skype menus and buttons disappear and reappear hovering over with mouse

2008-11-23 Thread marfal
I have a very similar problem,
Open Office text descriptions on the tool bars and drop down menu's are absent.
They do very briefly appear as you move the cursor over them, but all menu's
are blank as well as the options settings box - if you can manage to get to it.
I'm running intrepid on a Toshiba Satellite 2410-601 with the nvidia
accelerated graphics driver (version 96) [recommended].
If I switch off compiz, open office is fine, turn it back on, text disappears
again.
I've installed the 'fusion-icon' so I can easily switch between compiz and
metacity.

uninstall xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
install the xfree86-driver-synaptics deb package and reboot.
