[Bug 2057687] Re: systemctl hibernate error: "Call to Hibernate failed: Invalid argument"

2024-06-06 Thread mash
I added the line "blacklist intel_hid" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and then ran

sudo update-grub
sudo update-initramfs -c -k all

and now hibernate works again (mostly -- hibernate works with "systemctl
hibernate" and with closing the lid, but hibernate does not work with
selecting hibernate from the gnome Power Off menu).

I would be grateful for an explanation but I seem to be back in business
in terms of hibernation. Thank you @xstack

[Bug 2057687] Re: systemctl hibernate error: "Call to Hibernate failed: Invalid argument"

2024-06-06 Thread mash
I had successfully enabled Hibernate in Ubuntu 23.10 (using the very
clear tutorial https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2021/08/enable-
hibernate-ubuntu-21-10/) but hibernate stopped working on the upgrade to
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

At first, I received
systemctl hibernate error: "Call to Hibernate failed: Invalid argument"
which is the subject of this bug.

I implemented the maj:min fix recommended in #10 (@dmitry-a-durnev) and
that resolved this error.

But hibernate still fails. I have the experienced described in #5
(@xstack) and #14 (@jorisjansen). Here is the relevant item from dmesg:

[ 3676.283879] PM: hibernation: Wakeup event detected during hibernation,
rolling back.

I do not understand the advice in #5:

If anyone met the "Wakeup event detected during hibernation, rolling back"
problem, change the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and add blacklist kernel
module, for example:
blacklist intel_hid

FYI.

Bug 218634 - Hibernate fails with "Wakeup event detected during hibernation,
rolling back"

Would it please be possible to explain this fix in more detail? Thank you,

[Bug 1770435] [NEW] Portrait orientation not available for external monitor

2018-05-10 Thread mash
Public bug reported:

This problem appeared immediately after my upgrade to ubuntu 18.04.

I have been running an external monitor in portrait mode and this worked
fine until the upgrade to 18.04.

In gnome-control-center >> Devices >> Displays, when I select
Orientation = Portrait for the external monitor and then apply the
change, the external monitor does not appear to receive a signal from
the computer (the monitor goes into power-save mode).

The external monitor works normally with the selection Orientation =
Landscape.

I resolved the problem with Find by going to

System Settings -> Language Support

setting Keyboard input method system to None (from IBus)

I gather that this is not satisfactory if your usage requires IBus.

Re: [Bug 1576844] Re: Touchpad/Trackpad freezes then eventually unfreezes (repeatedly)

2016-07-06 Thread mash
I'm sorry -- I can't follow either of those pages. They're written beyond
my capacity.

ASIDE: I also have trouble with older kernels because the default
partitioning by Dell made /boot too small. So I constantly need to apt-get
remove old linux-image-'s to make room for new ones. So I probably do not
have any older kernels on my computer.

I am willing to do the experiment, but I will need more guidance, i.e., how
to install and then how to boot an older kernel. Thank you very much.

Best,
Michael

[Bug 1576844] Re: Touchpad/Trackpad freezes then eventually unfreezes (repeatedly)

2016-07-05 Thread mash
On the advice of Chris Penalver (thank you, once again), I upgraded my
Dell XPS 13 (9343) from BIOS A05 to BIOS A07 (see thread above for
guidance on how to make the upgrade. I downloaded the new BIOS
9343_BIOS_Rev_A07.exe from
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=28M21
and followed the instructions above.

The following command(s) report the BIOS and release date:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

which are, after the upgrade:
A07
11/11/2015

The new BIOS appears to have resolved the problem, or at least I've had
no recurrences since making the BIOS upgrade

Thank you.

The touchpad restart:

In fact some of the touchpad continues to operate (click, drag while

temporarily breaks).

[Bug 1576844] [NEW] Trackpad freezes then eventually unfreezes (repeatedly)

2016-04-29 Thread mash
Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Release:16.04

Several times yesterday and today (April 28-29, 2016) the trackpad on
the Dell XPS 13 9343 has frozen. Other functions (keyboard, screen,
etc.) have been fine but the pointer has been frozen in place. Then
after 1-3 minutes functionality returns.

Thank you very much for your assistance and I'd be happy to provide more
information.

Re: [Bug 1422137] Re: Display quits periodically

2015-10-30 Thread mash
While working through this, I realized that the upgrade to ubuntu 15.10 did
not update to the 4.2 kernel. I have since done that and so far the
problem has not recurred. I will file a fresh report if it does. Thanks,
Chris.

[Bug 1495112] Re: Keyboard doesn't work for crypt passphrase on bootup

2015-09-12 Thread mash
Thank you for the guidance. I will need a bit more coaching than
appears on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds

First, is the kernel I should test the top one listed on
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ or is it
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please advise.

Second, the directions say I need to uninstall proprietary or out-of-
tree modules (ex. vitualbox, nvidia, fglrx, bcmwl, etc.) [unless there
is an extra package available for the version I am testing]. How can I
tell what's installed?

Otherwise I think I can follow the directions on the MainlineBuilds
page.

Thank you very much.

[Bug 1187078] Re: omega and lambda executables not found in texlive-omega

2013-06-07 Thread mash
I have a partial solution.

First, the omega and lambda executables appear to have been replaced
with aleph and lamed respectively. These executables do appear in the
texlive-base package, and aleph and lamed appear to work for compiling
the files in http://ctan.org/tex-archive/language/hebrew/makor.

Second, there is a serious error in the filenames in the makor package
(this may not be the right forum for reporting it). As given in CTAN
there is one bug: the file makor/fonts/type1/makor2/ezra/Ezra.pfb should
be called ezra.pfb in lower case, when one is on a case-sensitive
filesystem (such as Linux).

So please consider this bug report closed.

[Bug 1187078] [NEW] omega and lambda executables not found in texlive-omega

2013-06-03 Thread mash
Public bug reported:

I have the texlive-omega package installed
(https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/i386/texlive-omega) which I believe
should include the omega and lambda executables

omega -- A wide-character-set extension of TeX.
lambda -- LaTeX format based on the Omega engine.

The executables do not appear to be installed. My end goal is to run
makor (http://ctan.org/tex-archive/language/hebrew/makor) a Hebrew-
language typesetting system that requires omega or lambda for the TeX
and LaTeX varieties.

LaTeX is otherwise fully installed and running fine.

Thank you very much for your guidance.

[Bug 874528] Re: Column and Row Labels Missing in XLSX

2011-10-28 Thread mash
I had this problem too. Try grabbing and enlarging (i.e., click-drag)
the Sheets tab at the lower left-hand corner of the spreadsheet. After
I enlarged this tab, the row labels became visible again.

[Bug 881194] [NEW] Gnome3 panel disappears.

2011-10-24 Thread mash
Public bug reported:

I am not aware of what triggers the problem but sometimes (at least
once/day) the Gnome3 panel (the bar across the top with the Date, the
icons for sound, battery network, etc.) disappears. The menu bar for
individual applications continues to work, but I cannot get the panel to
relaunch. Logging out with "sudo service gdm stop ; sudo service gdm
start" returns to a valid login screen; if I log in as a different user,
everything is fine. If I log back in as myself, then the problem
persists.

[Bug 77542] Re: Firefox crashes after being left running overnight

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 72018 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/72018

This bug does not seem to me to be a duplicate of bug #71182.

Firefox does not crash when I am using it. But if I leave the computer
running overnight (or for a long time), Firefox crashes mysteriously
without leaving anything noteworthy in /var/log/messages

I will try out the debugging routine and get back to this bug.

[Bug 294236] [NEW] Fullscreen behavior of nvidia TwinView; Xinerama?

2008-11-05 Thread mash
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

SUMMARY: Would like to have fullscreen / maximize work across both
screens in my TwinView two-monitor configuration.

I am very pleased with the new nvidia-settings and nvidia 177 driver because
they now include 1024x768 as a default for an external monitor that does not
send an EDID. (This happens because I connect to a beamer / projector through
a black box in an AV cabinet, not directly, so no EDID.)

BUT under TwinView with two monitors (laptop plus external projector) in
the new version, the two screens maximize / fullscreen separately. I
would like to be able to maximize / fullscreen across the two screens.
(I understand that some people want separate fullscreen / maximize, but
it should be possible to choose between the two. (This is a new
behavior; under the previous version, fullscreen went across the two
screens.)

Could this involve a Xinerama option with TwinView?
See "(4) TFT and CRT using nvidia'a twinview with xinerama"
I tried tweaking xorg.conf but fouled things up and had to revert to the
nvidia-xconfig copy.

[Bug 216483] Re: USB storage fails to automount

2008-06-04 Thread mash
I am having this problem as well since I upgraded to ubuntu 8.04.

I have several USB storage devices (LaCie 1.5TB external hard drives,
several usb flash pen-drives) and they do not automount after the
upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04. I can mount them from the command line with
'sudo mount ...' but it would be nice to have them automount when I
connect the drives.

dmesg reports the connection and the drives are assigned devices, e.g.,
sg5, but no mount w/o a command-line 'mount'

[Bug 118440] [needs-packaging] supershow (pdf+audio -> swf)

2007-06-02 Thread mash
Public bug reported:

supershow is a nice python frontend to swftools (which I have been told
will be packaged for an upcoming ubuntu release).

The user views and advances her pdf slideshow in synch with a playing
audio file. Supershow then packages the synchronized pdf slideshow and
audio file as an SWF file.

The product is a narrated (or musically accompanied) slideshow in SWF

http://www.rastersoft.com/programas/supershow.html

Here's a nice description of the product and the installation (actually nicer
than the home website):

[Bug 74560] Re: eboard quits after a few minutes

2007-03-18 Thread mash
I am not sure if this is a different crash. Any advice on whether or
not I should have submitted it? Thanks.
