[Bug 785592] [NEW] Battery status marked as charged whereas it's not

2011-05-20 Thread merc
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi

This is very odd.
My battery is not new, and it shows a little:

$ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/info
present: yes
design capacity: 63000 mWh
last full capacity: 38390 mWh
battery technology: rechargeable
design voltage: 11250 mV
design capacity warning: 3150 mWh
design capacity low: 630 mWh
cycle count: 0
capacity granularity 1: 1 mWh
capacity granularity 2: 1 mWh
model number:42T4815
serial number:3179
battery type:LION
OEM info:LGC 11

But it's not as bad as it *could* be.
BUT...
Look at this:

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: charged
present rate:0 mW
remaining capacity: 260 mWh
present voltage: 11289 mV

Err... 260mWh and *charged*?

The problem is that it won't charge, no matter what I do with it.

This started happening after upgrading to Ubuntu 11.4.

What can I do?

If it matters, it's a Lenovo Thinkpad. Battery is bout 1 year old.

Bye,

Mrc.

[Bug 372090] Re: AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint gets stuck and is generally unresponsive.

2010-11-11 Thread merc
Hi,

I tried several kernels, and I can sadly confirm that the bug is still
there. Events are not logged _at all_.

Is there anything else I can do to try and debug this?

[Bug 665993] Re: [maverick] iwl3945 not working after upgrade from lucid

2010-11-10 Thread merc
Hi,

I just wanted to fully confirm that 2.6.35 is broken.
With 2.6.32, when I run rfkill I get:

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

If I have the killswitch on (meaning, killing), I get:

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

HOWEVER, with 2.6.35 Hard blocked is always yes no matter what you do.
At the modem, downgrading seems to be the only fix...

Bye!

[Bug 372090] Re: Touchpad gets stuck and is generally unresponsive

2010-11-03 Thread merc
Alright, this bug is 1.5 years old, but I am still keen on getting it fixed.
I can confirm that with Windows the touchpad works 100% fine. With Linux, it's
absolutely awful.

I am installing Maverick right now, to see if it still does it -- I
doubt it will be fixed, but you never know.

I am happy to ship this laptop anywhere to a developer, so that they can
actually use it and see it. In the meantime, as soon as Maverick is
installed, *what* extra info would you like?

[Bug 372090] Re: Touchpad gets stuck and is generally unresponsive

2010-11-03 Thread merc
No worries about the delay.

I have just finished the update. I am just about to complete a fresh
installation, will let you know soon.

I am afraid this bug affects very few people, and it's sort of subtle.
But I am totally happy to send my laptop to a developer to get it tested
properly... I think that's the only way!

[Bug 372090] Re: Touchpad gets stuck and is generally unresponsive

2010-11-03 Thread merc
Hi,

OK, here I am.
The bug is still there. It's _annoyingly_ subtle -- I can see how a lot of
developers wouldn't eve notice by using the touchpad just for a few seconds.
The touchpad works.

However, this is exactly what happens: ONLY AFTER leaving it still for a
couple of seconds, there is a 200m or 400ms (milliseconds) delay between
you moving your finger and the pointer coming to life. If after that
pause you keep on moving the mouse, it goes *perfectly* well. If you
stop for a little bit, and try to move it again, it will be stuck again
-- your finger can move up to about a centimetre, or more, before the
pointer finally moves.

The usability result of this are disastrous. You know something is
wrong, you tend to blame the surface of the touchpad, you clean it, and
after a while it stresses the hell out of you.

Please let me know what info I could provide to see if this can be
fixed. I am pretty good with Linux. I have already:

 * Checked the settings under Mouse - Touchpad. Disable touch while
typing doesn't seem to make a difference. Disabling or enabling edge
scrolling doesn't make a difference either.

I have been travelling with this laptop with an external mouse for 1
year and a half. I will decommission it in 6 months. When I do, I will
have to install Windows on it again, as I can't put anybody through this
touchpad...

Bye,

Merc.

Now, the bad news.

Basically, when there is a cursor is not moving problem, events don't
show up _at all_. Just to clarify: I can tap, *violently* against the
touchpad, and nothing scrolls up. No events are logged... AS LONG AS the
touch -- even though is quite strong -- is very brief. I can drag my
fingertip as far as half way though the touchpad, and see absolutely no
events scroll up. If I move it more freely, once the pointer was picked
up, the cursor moves freely.

I have the slight feeling this might possibly be a kernel issue. I
vaguely remember reading about kernel issues with this very device...
but quite frankly I can't remember.

[Bug 372090] Re: Touchpad gets stuck and is generally unresponsive

2010-11-03 Thread merc
Hi,

There is a duplicate to this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics/+bug/379517

He actually explains it better than me. If I hadn't find this, I would
have thought I had a hardware issue.

Please note that I am totally happy to keep providing info (or even the
laptop) so that the problem can be fixed. However, I will eventually
decommission this laptop in a few months (largely due to the touchpad
issue, this machine is still a monster).

HP Pavillon DV2000 Entertainment PC -- I might have missed this in the
original report.

2009-12-19 Thread merc
Hi,

I can confirm that on my Dell Mini 10 the mike is NOT working.
If I go to Sound Preferences, Input, it's all grey.
In hardware there's just Internal Audio 1 Output, no sign of a mike...

Help? :-D

[Bug 469346] Re: Dell mini 10 Mic not working

2009-12-19 Thread merc
Hi,

Need to correct myself.
In Hardware, I get the following profiles:

* Analog stereo input
* HDMI output
* HTMI Output + Analog stereo input
* Analog Stereo Output
* analog stereo duplex

Picking the last one, in the Input section the mike is not greyed out.
Selecting Internal Audio Analog Stereo works, but Input level is
always 0 (nothing compares in the bars) and it just doesn't record
anything...

Sorry about my lame earlier report...

Bye!

[Bug 379517] Re: touchpad mouse stutters/stops on slow movement

2009-08-13 Thread merc
Hi,

This is probably not good news, but... I uninstalled xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics . Things got better... and worse. Things got better meaning
that now the delay between the finger movement and the actual mouse
movement is not as bad. Worse because now the pointer is stuttery --
especially when using it for precise movements, it just seems to move
around a lot.

Maybe the problem is not Synaptics after all?

[Bug 372090] Re: Touchpad gets stuck and is generally unresponsive

2009-05-23 Thread merc
Hi,

I just wanted to add that I downgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 (I can't deal with
computer freezes... I don't have a test machine, sorry :( ).

Now... the problem is _there_ as well! But, it's much more subtle. I
think it's subtle enough to make people slightly hate their touchpad and
Ubuntu in general, but it's not clear enough (not in 8.10) to go Ah,
that's what's happening!.

In 8.10 as well, there is a small delay from when the touchpad has input
to when the driver actually does something about it. I must say the
problem is WAY less in 8.10 than 9.04, but I _guarantee_ it's there. If
you know it's there, you suddenly realise why you hate the touchpad and
you see clearly the delay. In 9.04, the problem is multiplied by 5x
(give or take), and that's why people noticed.

I am happy to provide whatever info you might need.

[Bug 372090] [NEW] Touchpad gets stuck and is generally unresponsive

2009-05-05 Thread merc
Public bug reported:

Hi

The touchpad doesn't work on Ubuntu 9.04 (the latest)

There is some information about this bug here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7209519posted=1#post7209519

Please note that I am JUST covering the touchpad issue here.

The problem seems to be with elantech touchpads. From my understanding
of this bug, what's happening is that if the mouse is not moving for a
few seconds, and then the touchpad is used, it takes a little while for
the driver to kick in. As a result, there is a sense of getting stuck.

Note that this problem makes the touchpad semi-unusable. Between this,
and the Intel video card issue, the upgrade to 9.04 made my computer
hardly usable...

Not sure how to debug this. It's hard enough to make sense of it...

Merc.

So, the demon is running. Are you saying that it looked like it had died
before, when it didn't get the IP address?

[Bug 83235] DHCP IP lease fails (ipw3945)

2007-02-04 Thread merc
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I am having a problem with Ubuntu Fiesty. It's a freshly installed HERD 3 with
all the latest updates.
Here's my uname:

Linux merc-laptop 2.6.20-6-generic #2 SMP Wed Jan 31 20:53:39 UTC 2007
i686 GNU/Linux

The wireless network is detected. However, the DHCP seems to have a bit of a
problem.
It will work for a while - the computer will get a DHCP lease without a
problem. However, after a while after suspending/unsuspending the computer, the
system will not be able to obtain a DHCP lease anymore.

As far as the lights are concerned, when I try to get Network Manager to
lease an IP address, it actually looks like the system manages (the
light blinks, it stays on for a tick, and then it goes away again).

[Bug 77104] Re: Battery Monitor -- time remaining estimates incorrect to start with

2007-01-04 Thread merc
Hi,

OK, one more comment: gnome-power-manager and the Battery Charge Monitor
seem to give quite different time estimates...

This is kinda weird, because I expected the info to come from /proc - it
obviously doesn't!
(Well, I assume how much battery there is comes from /proc, but the applets are
to work out how much time is remaining).

In general, the Battery Charge Monitor seems to get a much mor ereliable
estimate in a much shorter time.

Bye!

Hi,

It's with the gnome-power-manager icon!

By batstat, do you mean the Battery Charge Monitor 2.16.2?

Do you want me to run the same test comparing the two applets? (They do
seem to say different things!)

[Bug 77104] Battery Monitor -- time remaining estimates incorrect to start with

2006-12-25 Thread merc
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

Hello,

There is a bit of a problem with the battery applet. I am using Feisty
with all the updates, and a Lenovo V100 laptop.

The problem is especially there at the beginning. After a while, things get
better. However, it takes a little too long.
This is a table of what the monitor tells me. At this point, the machine had
been running for about 15 minutes (and the battery left was just silly to
start with, but that's OK).

Here we go:

Time - Battery left
5:20PM - 1.54
5:21PM - 1.48
5:25PM - 1.35
5:30PM - 1.28
5:40PM - 1.15
5:45PM - 1.09
5:50PM - 1.04
5:55PM - 1.00
6.00PM - 0.56
6.05PM - 0.50

As you can see, it only starts telling the truth after about 35 minutes
(that's 15 minutes before I started logging, plus 20 minutes after
starting logging).

The computer was used the same way throughout these measurements: light
internet browsing, etc. The fan turned itself on every now and again
throughout the testing. PLEASE NOTE that I am in Australia, it's summer
and it's bloody hot here.

This is the output of cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/*

alarm: unsupported

(Taken at 6:00PM)

The output of lshal is attached.
I know I might be knit picking, but really, 40 minutes to have a realistic
estimate really is a little bit much.

I hope this helps. I am here if you need me to test it more - I am more
than willing to keep track of what the estimates are every 10 minutes.

Bye!

[Bug 56421] Re: ipw3945 doesn't reassociate after suspend

2006-12-25 Thread merc

Then this is surely a userspace problem.

...is anybody dealing with this?
My script now reads:

#!/bin/bash

echo Killing dhclient3 and ipw3945d
killall dhclient3
killall /sbin/ipw3945d-2.6.19-7-generic

echo Wait 2 secs...
sleep 2

echo Taking the modules out
rmmod ipw3945
rmmod ieee80211

echo Deleting the PIDs
rm -f /var/run/ipw3945d.pid
rm -f /var/run/dhclient.eth1.pid

echo Wait 1 sec...
sleep 1

echo Inserting the ipw3945 module
modprobe ipw3945

echo Wait 1 sec...
sleep 1

echo Running the dhclient
dhclient3 -pf /var/run/dhclient.eth1.pid -lf
/var/lib/dhcp3/dhclient.eth1.leases eth1

It took a lot of trial-and-error. I *suspect* it's the interaction with the
ipw3945d daemon that makes everything go bananas...

[Bug 77109] Suspend/resume broken in Lenovo 3000 V100

2006-12-25 Thread merc
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I am not entirely sure how to go about it.

Suspending is basically broken in my Lenovo 3000 V100.
I am using Feisty, with the 2.6.19-7-generic kernel.

I managed to nearly fix the problem - the nearly bothers me a little bit.
Here is what I did:

* DIsable *compleltely* the mmc drivers. To do this, I just ran:

cd /lib/modules/2.6.19-7-generic/kernel/drivers/mmc
mv sdhci.ko sdhci.ko.MERC
mv tifm_sd.ko tifm_sd.ko.MERC
mv tifm_sd.ko wbsd.ko.MERC
mv tifm_sd.ko mmc_block.ko.MERC
mv tifm_sd.ko mmc_core.ko.MERC

* Disable *completely* the Fireware modules, which has problems
suspending:

cd /lib/modules/2.6.19-7-generic/kernel/drivers/ieee1394
mv sbp2.ko sbp2.ko.MERC
mv ohci1394.ko ohci1394.ko.MERC
mv ieee1394.ko ieee1394.ko.MERC

I know there must be a better way to do this, but well, I just wanted to
make sure...

* Write a simple script to re-enable the wireless connection, which
otherwise won't work:

vi /etc/acpi/resume.d/99-wireless-merc.sh

---
#!/bin/bash

echo Killing dhclient3 and ipw3945d
killall dhclient3
killall /sbin/ipw3945d-2.6.19-7-generic

echo Wait 2 secs...
sleep 2

echo Taking the modules out
rmmod ipw3945
rmmod ieee80211

echo Deleting the PIDs
rm -f /var/run/ipw3945d.pid
rm -f /var/run/dhclient.eth1.pid

echo Wait 1 sec...
sleep 1

echo Inserting the ipw3945 module
modprobe ipw3945

echo Wait 1 sec...
sleep 1

echo Running the dhclient
dhclient3 -pf /var/run/dhclient.eth1.pid -lf
/var/lib/dhcp3/dhclient.eth1.leases eth1
---

See bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.15/+bug/56421 for more info.

Now... I was quite happy with my laptop working well enough. However,
it does fail to wake up every now and then.

[Bug 76632] Re: screen does not unlock after locking

2006-12-23 Thread merc
Hello,

Sorry, my previous comment was a case of cutpaste gone very wrong.

I can confirm that the problem persists. However, installing Feisty from
SCRATCH, and doing all of the updates at once, the problem is _not_
there. I think this is an important piece of information - could it be
that the problem only shows for incremental updates? Can anybody else
confirm this?

What is worse, I am about to kill the laptop with the problem (the one

[Bug 56421] Re: ipw3945 doesn't reassociate after suspend

2006-12-16 Thread merc
Hiya,

I am not sure this is gonna help.
However, I found that ifdown/ifup doesn't actually do the trick.

What you _actually_ need to do is this:

#!/bin/bash

#echo Killing the DHCP client...
killall dhclient3
rm /var/run/dhclient.eth1.pid

#echo Restarting the DHCP client...
dhclient3 -pf /var/run/dhclient.eth1.pid -lf
/var/lib/dhcp3/dhclient.eth1.leases eth1

This actually does the trick quite nicely.

I have no idea why this is. I know that dhclient3 is killed when the
computer goes to sleep. But I don't understand what wakes it up, nor why
it won't work normally as soon as the interface is up. Please note
that it doesn't just take extra time - it will never connect.

If you want me to run more tests, all you have to do is ask!

Bye,

Merc.

You should save the script as:

And remember to set it as executable (chmod 755)

[Bug 76079] Wireless silently fail when the PC is not authorised to connect to AP

2006-12-16 Thread merc
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Sorry, I am not entirely sure which package this applies to.
Here is the problem.
I have a Modem/router Netgear DG834G and a laptop with Ubuntu Feisty on it.
It works beautifully - wireless and everything.

However, here is the problem. My router is configurable so that only
pre-specified MAC addresses can connect to it. Yeah, it's very unsafe,
but it's an overkill since there aren't houses around me.

If my laptop is NOT in the list of approved MAC addresses, wireless
networking will fail. And that's fair enough. HOWEVER, the problem is
that it will fail QUIETLY, without telling me why or without even giving
me an error message.

If I do the very same thing with my Apple iBook, then a nice dialog box
nicely tells you that the connection to the AP could not be established.

I am not exactly a newbie; however, I was silly enough to forget about
the MAC address issue (in fact, I thought I had disabled it) and spent
hours and hours trying to figure out why it didn't connect.

I really, really think having a message explaining that the connection
could not be established is a _must_ here. I am not sure why this isn't
happening already - maybe not many people use such a lame protection
method? Well, I am not a big fan of quiet fails, so I thought I'd
report this bug.

Which package is involved here? Is ther a daemon that handles this?

Thank you for listening :-D

Merc.

Hi,

Does the message above mean that it's been backported?

I would love to see this in Dapper.

ANd since it looks like it's gonna be a while before this gets pushed into
