[Bug 1970126] [NEW] gqrx crash on startup with SIGSEGV in gr::funcube::fcdpp::make()

After installing Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and installing gqrx ("gqrx-sdr") from
the repositories, gqrx crashes consistently on startup. It worked fine
on 21.10. The SDR is a Funcube Pro+.

I raised a bug on github gqrx-sdr: https://github.com/gqrx-
sdr/gqrx/issues/1120

At the moment, it looks as if the gqrx-sdr package is unusable due to a
change in gr-funcube.

FWIW, I ran into this issue on when booting the latest available kernel
(after an update) on a Debian VM running on a Debian host. Only booting
the latest kernel triggered the issue.

The key was the "Device out of space" message that lead me to this
bug/message.

As vt100 found, and christiank confirmed, the amount of space allocated
to /run was the issue. Extending /run solved the issue.

For those running into this issue and Googling, I saw two different
errors on two different VMs (taken from the consoles after a failed
boot):

VM 1 gave the following errors on boot (Note the lack of a 'out of
space' message):

While tracker is indexing, I can obtain search results from the "super"
key menu or using tracker search, e.g. "tracker search Magnetic". After
a few minutes, this stops working and further searches yield no results.
tracker status reports:

Currently indexed: 2 files, 0 folders
Remaining space on database partition: 729.7 GB (82.65%)
All data miners are idle, indexing complete

To investigate, I ran:

Please ignore my earlier comment. This does still occur, I just didn't
see it has I had inadvertently set apport to automatically report so
there was no pop-up. After boot, tracker seems to run normally, at least
initially:

I saw this for a few days after a fresh install of Hirsute. It would
happen shortly after boot, but it seems to have stopped. It could be
because tracker has now scanned everything.

Creating loadbalancers with Octavia creates Nova Instances in the service 
tenant/project.
But this instances are not reported via ceilometer. 
There are no loadbancing meters from the neutron vhost ether. 
But the neutron vhost is configured for ceilometer metering.

Does this work as expected?
Is there any way to activate Metering for the service project in ceilometer?

A recent update has fixed it! 18.04 as released comes with kernel
4.15.0-20-generic, which has the bad video effect. Latest update
(2/7/2018) includes 4.15.0-24-generic, which does not (it works
perfectly).

Answering your questions in turn:

1) All I can say for the moment is that it was OK in Ubuntu 17.10 and
not OK in 18.04.

2) The monitor is actually a Samsung television, model no. UE40EH5000.
However, I want to be clear that the issue is with the screen in the
laptop itself, not anything external. The issue occurs whether or not an
external monitor (television) is connected.

3) Straight HDMI cable.

To be clear, the behavior as I see it is exactly as bug 1300349.

When booting 18.04 on my Dell 5737 I am greeted with an image like the
attached. The colours are clearly incorrect and the display looks to be
of low resolution. This is true whether booting from a fresh
distribution copy on a memory stick or the subsequent patched install.
The image on an external monitor appears unaffected.

The kernel update that was issued today -- 3.13.0-66 -- killed my
computer. Fortunately I was able to go back to the prior one --
3.13.0-65. When restarting after the install and just after logging in,
a system error box came up, but all I could do was a hard shutdown.
After two times, I reverted to the prior kernel with no problems.

I've just tried Utopic Unicorn (14.10), and the issue remains there too.
This has comes with kernel 3.16.0-24-generic #32-Ubuntu. Installing
3.15.0-031500rc3-generic #201404280035 fixes it, though.

I still have that laptop although I did upgrade twice since then, and I also 
switched back from Ubuntu to Debian for a long list of reasons.
I wonder how this bug wasn't killed by the eh, we never replied to your bug, 
but it's been long enough that the distribution you used is now obsolete, so 
we're closing it bug auto-closer bot.

Either way, if you work for canonical or volunteer for ubuntu, feel free
to close as wontfix since hardy is now very obsolete.

I have the same issue but I get mine when I try to install glx-
alternative-nvidia and trying to install the dependencies fails.

the same behavior on both the package from the core repositories

I'm using a Radeon HD 4650 on dual monitors using fglrx-legacy

It likely is the same, yes.

Personally, I stopped caring. I got tired of ubuntu shoving things like 
plymouth down our throats and came to realize that it was my fault for 
realizing that ubuntu was not the appropriate distribution for my needs anymore.
It's meant for people who don't tinker with their systems, like windows like 
interactions with their computer, and it's often hard to change its behaviour 
as well as being a WONTFIX to make the distribution more configurable (like 
making plymouth optional).

So, I just went back to debian, and I'm happy camper. This doesn't fix
this bug, but it fixes my problem :)

As a side note, things like upstart and plymouth would have gone so much
better if they had been carefully documented instead of being rolled out
mostly working and very undocumented like they were. Thankfully at
least upstart now has pretty decent documentation, so better late than
never on that front.

I installed warty or something and upgraded since then. I have never 
re-installed.
Mind you with ubuntu, you're usually going to end up with a better system if 
you wipe than if you upgrade, since they don't test upgrades that carefully and 
do not support 2 version jumps or partial upgrades.

Oliver, first I do compile my own kernels, just to clear that up (not that it 
should make a difference).
Second, I'm pretty sure it's not a kernel issue since the same kernel does work 
with karmic and not with oneiric.
Then, since the fuse mount managed to use obex to talk to my phone, clearly the 
kernel bits work (especially since my non working app started working too at 
that time), it is userspace that broke in some way.

Ok, now I have something very interesting: I have a custom app that talks over 
bluetooth and it wasn't working.
It was getting:

Clearly, it does something better than the other apps and once it has authed

This is not a nokia problem, bluetooth connections to my android phones (all 3 
of them) stopped working after maverick for me. 
My older laptop with an older ubuntu still talks fine to those phones.
Oneiric can pair to them, but after that, nothing.

Not let me suspend by closing lid of Aspire, or by asking it to suspend
When ask it to hybernate, get black screen with white writing, key bit of which 
seems to be task udisks-daemon which brought me to this page

Also, poss connected:
When leave laptop for a few minutes, screen goes very dark, have to press 
function screen brighter to see anything again

Ah, and when close lid, later open it and goes to the logon, from boot up, 
screen - ie crashes

Same here, my wireless setup had worked for years, and after upgrading
to oneiric (from marverick, not natty), whenever my wireless connection
is not good, I get a password popup to verify/change the password and if
I click wrong, my wireless password is deleted from the 'auto essidname'
entry in network connections (I just had to manually re-enter it but it
should never have been deleted there to start with).

To add some info, with a 3.1.0 kernel, I have BT working on an old thinkpad 
with karmic and my 3 android phones. I can browse with obex no problems.
With the same 3.1.0 kernel on my now upgraded oneiric laptop (where things used 
to work with lucid and maverick), I am able to pair with my phones, I have a 
custom app that's able to talk bluetooth once with my phone, but after that, I 
see:

connect(4, {sa_family=AF_BLUETOOTH, sa_data=*\177\2037Z\31\0\0\0\0\0\0\0}, 
10) = -1 ECONNREFUSED
(Connection refused)

And again, phone and laptop are paired, unpairing/repairing works but only 
helps my app working once, after which it fails (and it used to work just fine 
with older ubuntus, and still fine with karmic), and browsing with obex fails 
reliably (while it works with karmic too).
browse files with bluetooth-applet still gives me: Failed to mount OBEX volume: 
Connection refused for my 3 devices that are otherwise paired fine.

If I may Scott, this is an answer one might except from microsoft telling you 
you can't upgrade from XP to W7 without going through Vista. Obviously you know 
of ubuntu bug #1.
I could understand sorry, we don't have the resources to test upgrades from 
any release to any release, but let me see how I can fix this bug, but not 
eh, you upgraded wrong, now udev and therefore your entire system won't work, 
sorry

I realize writing upgrades so that they work from older versions of the
package takes more time, but debian has been doing it for 15 years and
been doing a pretty good job of it. May I recommend trying to emulate
them a bit more here?

Back to this issue, if others get bitten by it, the workaround of 
udevadm.upgrade did not work for me. I had to edit the postinst script and 
comment out the udevadm info --convertdb line for things to continue.
Obviously this means whatever udev DB that might be important to my system will 
not have been upgraded, but at least I get a better chance of still having a 
usable system after I reboot it than leaving things as is :-/

for the wireless issue the problem ist likely to be related to the fact
that both, the acer-wmi module, and the wireless driver wl (the staging
drivers work better, but have other, more annoying issues e.g. lockups)
provide a rfkill switch. that and the hardware switch work against each
other. a workaround is to remove the acer-wmi module and insert it
again. although this doesn't bring the bluetooth to work. i don't have a
3g module.

I upgraded to the last version available after upgrading my backend and
frontend (DB version # update) and am now running
0.23.1+fixes26863-0ubuntu0+mythbuntu3.

XvMC just didn't work (it was worse).

I've disabled XvMC to work around the problem and things are ok now.

You can close this if you wish since the problem is likely on the intel
side either way and not with mythfrontend.

Could you be more specific about latest 0.23.0?
I tried 0.23.1+fixes26437-0ubuntu1 from maverick and I can't run that because 
it's too new to talk to my backend which is running 
0.23.0+fixes24220-0ubuntu0+mythbuntu2.

But I found useful information: I was able to downgrade my maverick laptop to 
mythfrontend 0.23.0+fixes24269-0ubuntu0+mythbuntu1 which had been working fine 
with my laptop when it was running an older k, and got the same crash with:

At this point, it is the upgrade to the new Xorg and newer intel drivers

Sorry, I'm going to re-open this because this is still an unaddressed bug:
- plymouth breaks initramfs' cryptsetup.
- it grabs stdin away from its shell scripts with no rationale as to why or how 
to turn it off
- i t is utterly undocumented whch is unacceptable for a core piece of the 
system (please point me to docs if I was unable to find them somehow).
- it breaks cryptsetup's keyscript=/sbin/cryptgetpw

At the very very least
you can add a file to /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/ that sets FRAMEBUFFER=n to 
override the inclusion of plymouth in the initramfs
needs to be documented somewhere if breaking cryptsetup functionality in 
initramfs is absolutely necessary.

let me amend my report:
e16 1.0.3 does let me move windows with alt+mouse button 1 but not by dragging 
the window from the top bar.
minimize/maximize is also broken
Downgrading e16 to the karmic version (lucid is broken too), and restarting e16 
on the running X session fixes the problem: minimize/maximize works again and 
moving windows by dragging them from the top bar works again

I'll skip the amount of grief plymouth has cost me in multiple places,
it has been echoed by enough other people in bugs and blogs (long story
short, I never upgraded to lucid because of plymouth). I eventually went
to maverick and it's a tiny bit better, but as far as encryption and
initrd goes, it of course grabs the console away and stops script that
read input from working.

My encryption script did a simple 
read PASSWORD
feed password to cryptsetup

read never works because of plymouth.
I edited /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-top/plymouth
and commented out
#printf '\033[?25l'  /dev/tty7 
#/sbin/plymouthd --mode=boot --attach-to-session 
--pid-file=/dev/.initramfs/plymouth.pid
#/bin/plymouth show-splash 

I have no idea why this is there, what purpose it serves, but now that I
removed them, I can read the encryption password from the command line
again and boot properly.

Please consider removing this if it's not absolutely necessary, and more
generally when you design system enhancements, remember those who
actually need boot messages and console access to work reliably and
couldn't care less about splash screens and eye candy that removes
access to the system when it boots.
