[Bug 1767786] Re: No WiFi (BCM43142) after kernel upgrade to 4.4.0-122

2018-05-26 Thread Mik
I'm using wl driver, for the upstream kernel it says you have to
uninstall before testing so I guess it won't say anything about this bug
right?

Same issue with BCM4322 on Mint 17.2.
I booted back on 4.4.0-119 but it didn't do the trick, I had to go back to
4.4.0-116.

[Bug 858845] Re: Screen edge actions set in CCSM (scale/expo) don't work (sometimes) - Wall plugin is probably responsible

2015-03-04 Thread Mik Wind
Still no fix, or an acceptable workaround for that matter... but Ive
found some strange behaviour:

the setting for the edge bindings ( in gconf) isn't set, although it is set in
CCSM :
/apps/compiz1/plugins/expo/screen0/options

or the scale one...

also, setting it up manually using gconf it doesn't fix the problem,
however, if I open up the gconf editor, the expo edge will start working
after 10 seconds except when a windos is touching that edge, I'm
completly puzzled.

unity --replace still works, sometimes unity crashes and one needs to
run the command twice...

[Bug 1179380] Re: paste widget password generator uses (very) insecure randomness

2013-07-22 Thread mik
Last thing I heard was on oss-sec list:

Please use CVE-2013-2213 for KDE KRandom::random() CWE-334: Small
Space of Random Values.

So I guess patching KRandom to use qca::random (either using TLS or a
lock) would be the easy fix that would let people sleep at night.

Yeah, that commit's wrong, unless they're assuming KRandom is a secure

for that.

That patch is wrong - KRandom only takes an int as seed, which is
trivial to replay. (And it falls back to srand(time(NULL)) - not a good
thing, for example if an apparmor policy accidentally blocked
/dev/urandom)

QCA::Random is what you're after.

[Bug 1183213] Re: pwgen falls back to insecure entropy silently

2013-05-27 Thread mik
Attached is a patch that fixes the bug:

- It will bail out with an error message and exit(1) if there's a problem with
/dev/urandom and /dev/random
- The modulo bias has been replaced with a fancy cast-as-double, then multiply
by 1.0/2**31, then multiply by max_value and cast back as int

configure.in should also be changed to get rid of the drand48 check
(didn't want to spam patch)

Note that pwgen is a dependency of some other packages that users might
not be aware of, such as 'maas-region-controller' and openerp - perhaps
a check of the apparmor policy of those packages is needed to make sure
access to /dev/urandom wasn't blocked.

[Bug 1183213] Re: pwgen falls back to insecure entropy silently

2013-05-27 Thread mik
Ok, I wasn't happy with the first patch, because some systems might not
have FPUs.

I've attached a patch that wastes some entropy, but still gives an
unbiased /dev/urandom read.

The quality of this program is fairly low overall, probably not suitable
for main. The phonemes mode produces a tiny amount of entropy per-
character, and that's the default for some reason. The secure mode is
only getting fixed now, and could have subtly been sabotaging users.
sha1 mode is just silly.

passwdqc has pwqgen, which is a good random passphrase generator that
can generate 26 - 81 bits worth of entropy in easily remembered
passwords.

For simple random password (pwgen -s style), I have a 50 line public
domain python script that I could package if needed.

** Patch added: A better patch

[Bug 764330] Re: [regression] Moving windows lags behind the mouse by 1-2 seconds; appear to freeze when dragging.

2013-02-23 Thread Mik Wind
I can confirm the following, and add some interesting things:

The bug starts when moving any window, by moving it in circles you can even
get the window to freeze.
compiz --replace or unity --replace fix it for one or 2 mins.

as mentioned above, It must related to the mouse, and how it is captured
because using the TOUCHPAD works perfectly...
note: I also have a logitec laser mouse G9

More interesting, Moving the windows, even woobly windows while in the expo
mode (wall enabled) does not lag, can anyone confirm the behaviour with the
touchpad and the expo plugin?

[Bug 972394] [NEW] Passwords with space malfunction

2012-04-03 Thread Hartog de Mik
Public bug reported:

== Description
I use the gmail notifier in gnome and have the chromium-browser as my default
browser.

My google password contains a space and this causes the gmail notifier
to open 2 tabs in chromium-browser.

One with URL:

https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLoginAuth?ltmpl=defaultltmplcache=2continue=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F%3Fservice=mailrm=falseEmail=my-email-addr...@gmail.comPasswd=

And one with URL:
  http://%26rmshown%3D1%26signin%3Dsign+in/

== Proposed fix
I guess the gnome-gmail-notifier should apply some escaping of spaces, either
with %20 or a mere +; either in the user-input or in the final URL

== Other WM's / Browsers
If I need to provide infos about iceweasel or unity, i'll be happy to oblige,
but I guess the same problem exists here 2.

[Bug 668525] Re: No hibernate in gdm system menu (inconsistency against indicator-applet)

2010-12-11 Thread Mik
The same situation here.
I try in 2 different PC, one AMD based and another Intel based.
The system is hibernate capable:
dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.freedesktop.UPower
--type=method_call --reply-timeout=6000 /org/freedesktop/UPower
org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties.Get string:org.freedesktop.UPower
string:CanHibernate
method return sender=:1.17 - dest=:1.41 reply_serial=2
   variant boolean true
The bus-send --print-reply --system --dest=org.freedesktop.UPower
/org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Hibernate command working fine,
and of course under the logout menu is still working the hibernate. Only under
the GDM login window is missing the hibernate option.
The system is a up-to-date Xubuntu 10.10.

[Bug 646468] Re: Apparmor deny when trying to use hugetlbfs

2010-09-26 Thread mik
A better way to do it would be to modify libvirt to create a directory
on the hugetlbfs for the vm (not just for itself), then pass that as the
mem-path to kvm and tell the sVirt driver about it somehow.

Ok, that was closer, but this time I get the message:

When I changed it to rw it worked... But does that mean that guests
can read each others' memory (if compromised)?

[Bug 646468] Re: Apparmor deny when trying to use hugetlbfs

2010-09-24 Thread mik
Just a follow-up...

This actually does work, and since qemu seems to unlink() right after
the mkstemp() there's only a small race condition there, and after that
the only way to steal another VMs memory is via procfs.

Is it worth writing a small doc (or debconf option?) to help people
setup hugetlbfs with libvirt?

[Bug 312957] Re: CWiid Version 0.6.00 unable to open uinput

2010-09-12 Thread Mik
In order to work whatever the rule number you choose you could use the
:= operator :

KERNEL==uinput, MODE:=0666

For an explanation read man 7 udev :

   :=
Assign a value to a key finally; disallow any later changes, which
may be used to prevent changes by any later rules.

[Bug 522553] [NEW] vigr demands vim to be installed

2010-02-16 Thread Hartog de Mik
Public bug reported:

Dear bug masters,

After installing a freshly burnt karmic I ran '% sudo vigr' and it complained
vim could not be found.

This would mean that the vim package should be a dependency of the
passwd (or shadow) package. Or that vigr should be adapted to use vi
rather then vim.

Just hopin' to help.

Grtz,
Hartog.

[Bug 468422] [NEW] Installed 9.10, system hung when I tried to install Broadcom driver.

2009-11-01 Thread Mik
Public bug reported:

1st attempt installing 9.10 Karmic Koala on a Vista Home Premium laptop
(Acer 2920z), I load up Ubuntu, do a search for hardware drivers to
install. 2 entries for Broadcom appear. Installing the first (the one
that mentions Firmware something or other) causes a kernel panic, and
I'm locked out of the OS.

Can't get back into Ubuntu, even in safe mode, do a fresh install, try
installing the 2nd Broadcom driver this time, nothing happens, the
downloading and installing progress bar continues to move, but there's
no disk movement. Stays the same for a further 10+ minutes, I click the
Crash Report logo icon that has now appeared, and end up typing this.

Disappointed, previously used 8.1 on this laptop, and was hoping 9.1
would finally be the answer. Seems I'm back to using Vista now, until I
can have a stable and wireless enabled laptop running linux : (

[Bug 235679] Re: Asks for same password twice

2008-05-31 Thread Hartog de Mik
OK, i'll explain as simple as I know how, since you seem to have trouble
reading my comments...

I have to linux partitions on my laptop:

/dev/sda5, this is an encrypted volume and it is eventually mounted as swap
space.
/dev/sda6, this is an encrypted volume and eventually maps to /

Each encrypted volume is given a different passphrase. (Why would i use
the same password twice if something like LVM exists?)

The root filesystem (/dev/sda6) is obviously luksopen'ed and mounted
first. Then it switches back to a console, does stuff and says something
along the lines of:

  [...]
  * Starting remaining crypto-disks...
Enter LUKS passphrase:
key slot 0 unlocked.
command successful.
  * /dev/mapper/sda5_crypt contains data, but still a valid filesystem [[ the
actual message is lengthier, but it boils down to this ]]
  * Staring remaining crypto-disks...
Enter LUKS passphrase:
key slot 0 unlocked
command successful.
  * /dev/mapper/sda5_crypt contains data, but still a valid filesystem
  [...]

[Bug 235679] Re: Asks for same password twice

2008-05-30 Thread Hartog de Mik
No, I only have 2 filesystems (shame on me, i know) A root filesystem
(/dev/sda6) and a swap filesystem (/dev/sda5).

As laid out, the root filesystem is luksopen'ed from usplash (asking the
password only once) and then it asks me the password for the swap
partition twice (And yes I did fill in the correct password in both
occasions. Eg: If i wanted to i could make cryptsetup ask me the
password for the swap filesystem up to 6 times)

Now could you please tell me how to turn boot logging on so that I can
post the messages that cryptsetup gives me here. Thanks.

[Bug 235679] [NEW] Asks for same password twice

2008-05-29 Thread Hartog de Mik
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cryptsetup

--[ Ubuntu release ]--
Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04

--[ version of package ]--
2:1.0.5-2ubuntu12

--[ Expected to happen ]--
When booting my laptop ubuntu is to ask the luks passwords of each and every
file system (2 in my case) just once inside of usplash and hide all the
nastiness it involves

--[ What happened instead ]--
When I boot my laptop it asks for the password of the root file system in
usplash and then switches back to a console.

There it asks for the password of the swap device. luksopen works like a
charm and I get a message saying something allong the lines of
/dev/sda5 contains data - cryptsetup failed.

Then it asks for the password of the swap device again. cryptsetup does
its thing again, gives the same complaint and the machine boots
perfectly with swap enabled.

Given the fact that this is a laptop, I have to boot daily. You can
understand this is becoming somewhat of a nuisance.

I would like to give you the full message(s) of what ever happens in
boot. However /var/log/boot is empty (e.g.: It states (Nothing has been
logged yet.)) and scrolling through the giant list of boot messages on
TTY8 is impossible. It will no longer adhere to the shift-pg up command.

--[ Request ]--
Could you please:
a) Tell me how to turn on boot logging so that I can supply a more detailed and
complete description of this bug
b) Start investigating the problem.

Many thanks in advance,
Hartog de Mik

[Bug 213171] [NEW] Unable to install with GUI on Fujitsu Lifebook C7651

2008-04-06 Thread Mik
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have an older Fujitsu Lifebook C7651 with a 1.2 Ghz Intel Pentium III
- M processor, and Intel 830MG Video Chipset. I have used various
flavors of linux on this laptop and each has worked well until the
release of Ubuntu 7. I have had the same problem with the current
release of Mandriva Linux. It seems that sometime between ubuntu 6 and
ubuntu 7 the intel graphics driver was rewritten and the new software
has caused problems with older intel chipsets.

When I try to install the current ubuntu 8.04 beta in regular graphics
mode the cd boots up and loads in non-gui mode then tries to go GUI and
continues to load with a blank screen. After the CD drive quits
spinning the screen dumps out to a command line. When I run the setup
in safe graphics mode I get a hashed screen with various ghosted
images, but I'm unable to see the screen enough to do any further setup.
If I go back to an older Ubuntu 6 install things work fine.

I found a mandriva bug -- https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=34583
that seems to address the problem and a workaround was created. I
thought that this workaround would have been integrated into the new
distributions to help all of us with older systems with intel chipsets
be able to keep up with the latest software. It seems though that I am
still having the same problem with the current 8.04 heron beta. Is this
bug going to be fixed for the new release or is it something that is
still in the works?
