[Bug 1073433] Re: Ext4 corruption associated with shutdown of Ubuntu 12.10

2012-11-05 Thread misiu_mp
To clarify as it is not completely apparent from the above discussion:
The repairs reported by fsck are not caused by corruption, but are harmless and
purely cosmetic fixes. The reason is that to avoid performance bottlenecks,
ext4 does not update the superblock after each inode or block (de)allocation.
This is done on (clean) unmount instead and only to make it look good. The
filesystem does not rely on this information.
The real bug is of course ubuntu not shutting down cleanly, and thus not
performing the umount.

Then again if this is not an error in the fs, then maybe fsck shouldn't
prevent the system from cleanly booting.

Theodore Ts'o take on it:

[Bug 989477] Re: Unity launcher does not re-appear when autohide switched on

2012-08-03 Thread misiu_mp
It appears a lot of people are confused about the pushing-the-edge thing that
you have to do to get the launcher. It is very nice when you know it, but
totally impossible to figure out on your own quickly.
May I suggest changing the cursor into something suggestive when pushing the
edge, so that the user knows there is something different there and maybe get
an idea of what to do?

[Bug 373243] Re: The amount of 'Total sent' data wraps around at 4GB

2009-06-24 Thread misiu_mp
This is madness. This doesnt have anything to do with linux and those at
gnome-bugs dont really care for this ...
The only way this could remotely be related to the kernel is that runnig a 64
bit kernel would allow to run a 64bit version of the program and the counter
warp around would disappear. This is not the way to approach this problem
though, as 32bit systems are still (probably) used by the majority of users and
they have the right to correct counter as well.

[Bug 373822] Re: on boot: nm-applet slow to detect wireless (~30 sec)

2009-05-09 Thread misiu_mp

For me this is what happens:
Directly after boot, the nm starts connecting but it takes long time and fails
in the end (password window pops up).
I have to disable wireless through the applet and enable it again. Only then I
get a connection.
My card is also Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG in a hp Compaq 6510b.
I connect to a WPA2 Personal network and there is no other connection or
network hardware except for Ethernet.
It works fine on a Mint 5r1 Livecd (based on ubuntu 8.04).

[Bug 293637] Re: High Xorg CPU usage with human theme

2009-05-08 Thread misiu_mp
I would like to confirm this bug for gnome.
I have intel 960 graphics and a Core2 Duo T9300 @ 2.50GHz .
A good way to reproduce it is to browse among available wireless networks by
clicking on the nm applet. It uses those animated bars to show strength of the
networks. It takes only few of them to peak one of the cores completely (even
though it IS a fast computer). Moving mouse in that window becomes sluggish.

I think it certainly is related to those animations as the network
selection pop-up doesn't have much else.

Using other theme then human is alright (all the other themes seem to
have static bars).

Since it happens on xfce and gnome, maybe gtk is to blame.

This is the graphics I have:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960

[Bug 373243] [NEW] The amount of 'Total sent' data wraps around at 4GB

2009-05-07 Thread misiu_mp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

This is related to the closed bug #284423 (the reporting user didnt follow up
the report).

It looks like 'Total sent' (or received) amount of bytes is kept in a 32bit
variable and is wrapped around each ~4GB sent (2^32 bytes).
You will never see total sent larger than 4GB. When the wrap happens you can
see the transfer rate graph go to zero for a moment. Caused probably by using
the wrapped variable in calculating speed (prev = 4GB, new =0 = speed
negative).
Changing the counter to 64bits should be a temporary fix. In the long run some
kind of bignum is needed (or decrease resolution and count the amount of kB
transmitted, or MB, GB).
Leaving it as is makes the counter quite useless especially as you can achieve
gigabit speeds on networks today it deasnt take long to exceed the 4 GB
transmitted data.

This is all speculations as I didn't look at the source, but it seems
quite clear to me.

Happens in all versions of gnome-system-monitor (including the one in
9.04).

[Bug 373409] [NEW] resize2fs doesn't notice the partition was fsck'ed

2009-05-07 Thread misiu_mp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gparted

Running from a live cd image of ubuntu 9.04 through virtual box.
When trying to shrink a partition (on a virtual box HDD) I got a message saying
the e2fsck should be run on the affected partition. It was run and finished
without errors:

check file system on /dev/sda5 for errors and (if possible) fix them
00:04:02( SUCCESS )

   e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sda5

shrink file system 00:00:01( ERROR )

   resize2fs 1.41.4 (27-Jan-2009)
   Please run 'e2fsck -f /dev/sda5' first.
(full output attached)

Manually running e2fsck followed by resize2fs ends in the same result.
Performing the operation on another partition (/dev/sda6) also fails.

Note: resizing partitions inside a virtual box disk (VDI) using a
gparted from a livecd is the recommended way
(http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?p=29276#29276).

see the transfer rate graph go to zero for a moment. Caused probably by using
the wrapped variable in calculating speed (prev = 4GB, new =0 = speed
negative).
Changing the counter to 64bits should be a temporary fix. In the long run some
kind of bignum is needed (or decrease resolution and count the amount of kB
transmitted, then MB, then GB).
Leaving it as is makes the counter quite useless especially as you can achieve
gigabit speeds on networks today.

This is all speculations as I didn't look at the source, but it seems
quite clear to me.

[Bug 292695] [NEW] network manager fails to connect to a wpa network with AR5212

2008-11-02 Thread misiu_mp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

This is a regression.

My 3Com Corporation AR5212 802.11abg NIC (3CRDAG675) (rev 01) used to work
well with WPA in ubuntu 8.04.
After system upgrade to 8.10 yesterday with update manager, Network Manager
times out on WPA connection.
There is very little to add here, i guess everything is in the attached logs,
except that before (i.e. in 8.04) the WPA connection took few more seconds than
one would normally be comfortable with, but it worked in the end.
I am not sure if the bug is in the network manager or in the drivers.

[Bug 198267] Re: wireless rt61pci driver buggy in Hardy alpha (only 1Mbit/s) - used to be fine on Gutsy

2008-09-29 Thread misiu_mp
I tried the backports package on a laptop with a build-in intel wireless and a
ralink pcmcia card.
It did make the ralink be set to 56mbps but i couldnt actually test it because
when i deactivated the build-in wlan, the pcmcia card died too (disappeared
from the network manager).
Tried both with a hw-switch and a sw-switch from acerhk (which normally works
with the intel chip) .
I also deactivated roaming mode on the intel card in network settings and set
it to zeroconf-something. Still, NetworkManager didnt see the ralink. As soon
as it could see the intel, it saw the ralink too, but not alone.

Then i upgraded to Ibex alpha6. Here i could make the intel unavailable (even
though there seems not to be a clean way - the hw-switch still turns off all
wireless in Network Manager and the acerhk doesnt compile on 2.6.27 and gcc
4.3.2).
Either way, the ralink works okey, but not well: at half the speed of intel
(660kbytes/s as opposed to 1.4Mbytes/sek downloading identical file) and it
doesnt seem to be able to connect to wpa protected network. Also it doesnt list
all the networks intel lists.

2008-09-29 Thread misiu_mp
In my opinion this particular bug is resolved in Interpid Ibex, but
there is the wpa and performance issue and what the hell is up with
NetworkManager disconnecting the card after the build-in card is
disconnected (a NetworkManager bug?).

Also, the blinken-lights still arent consistent on the ralink (sometimes
there is one green light on (the link indicator?), other time it is not;
the ACT light blinks when accesing the internet).

[Bug 198267] Re: wireless rt61pci driver buggy in Hardy alpha (only 1Mbit/s) - used to be fine on Gutsy

2008-03-06 Thread misiu_mp
Yes, it would be linux if the driver used was the one included in linux (the
kernel), which it probably was in Heron (as rt61 driver is included in the
2.6.24 version normally).
The thing is that even serialmonkey developers point out the version included
in the kernel is somewhat buggy (at least for now) and it shows.
My point is that maybe it would be preferable not to use the kernel driver but
use the same version that was included in Gutsy, if possible. Unless of course
the reason for this mess lies somewhat else in the brand new 2.6.24 kernel.

[Bug 198267] [NEW] wireless rt61pci driver buggy in Hardy alpha (only 1Mbit/s) - used to be fine on Gutsy

2008-03-03 Thread misiu_mp
Public bug reported:

I realize that ralink chips have had a lot of attention recently due to their
poor support in Ubuntu but my CNet CWC-854 with the RT2561/RT61 rev B chip
actually worked flawlessly in a very recent (i.e. updated) Gutsy system.
After update to Hardy alpha4 (or 5) the other day, the card still works but
operates at 1Mbit/s only. Running 'iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M' did set the
reported rate to 54Mbps but the actual transfer remained at under 1Mbps
(~80kB/s).

Im running a freshly upgraded (as of 2008-03-04 0100 UTC) Hardy Heron
alpha - kernel 2.6.24-11-generic.
