[Bug 1938334] [NEW] Please upgrade libical to 3.0.10

2021-07-28 Thread mtvoid
Public bug reported:

A bug in libical causes incorrect parsing of certain time zones, leading
to incorrectly created calendar events. I confirmed by building libical
from source that upgrading to the 3.0.10 release fixes this problem, as
described in detail here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution-data-
server/-/issues/344

[Bug 1728238] Re: update-initramfs not adding i915 GuC firmware for Kaby Lake, firmware fails to load

2018-06-21 Thread mtvoid
On the face of it, I cannot see how this particular commit could in any
way cause that other bug to arise. All it does is to allow the i915
driver to load a particular firmware file, and that too only if it's
explicitly specified on the kernel command line.

I think bug 1777242 needs to be investigated further, to find the exact
conditions under which it can be reliably replicated. The comment
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1777242/comments/8
(regarding an error with the qkl.ko module for QEMU), seems worth
looking into.

[Bug 1768734] Re: Restoring edge tiled windows on Wayland shrinks them

2018-05-16 Thread mtvoid
I've found a recent bug report for this issue on the GitLab site for mutter:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/140

This also requires me to correct my initial bug report. The issue is
unrelated to client-side decorated windows, but affects all native
Wayland windows, while XWayland windows are unaffected.

Reverting that commit will address the firmware loading issue for both
kbl and bxt. Although as far as I understand, Intel had cancelled
Broxton, and there are no chips based on it in the market, so it's
basically Kaby Lake users that are affected.

[Bug 1728238] Re: update-initramfs not adding i915 GuC firmware, firmware fails to load

2018-05-05 Thread mtvoid
This is the commit that is responsible for the Kabylake GuC firmware
file not being registered in the i915 module on Ubuntu kernels:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git/ubuntu/ubuntu-
bionic.git/commit/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_guc_fw.c?id=dc0f16f9b5084e6be2b8c79f8c6cd499a3451791

This is the accompanying bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1626740

I've also commented there to bring the issue to their attention. The
change should be reverted now that the formerly missing firmware files
are present in linux-firmware.

[Bug 1626740] Re: i915 module requests unreleased GUC firmware files

/lib/firmware/i915/kbl_guc_ver9_14.bin and
/lib/firmware/i915/bxt_guc_ver8_7.bin have been present in linux-
firmware 1.165 onwards.

I believe the patch to remove the MODULE_FIRMWARE entries,
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git/ubuntu/ubuntu-
bionic.git/patch/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_guc_fw.c?id=dc0f16f9b5084e6be2b8c79f8c6cd499a3451791,
should be reverted now, else many people on Kaby Lake hardware who try
to load the GuC firmware will experience errors
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-

The bug shows up only in a Wayland session. The behaviour is normal

handling the sizing of client-side decorated windows when

[Bug 1768988] Re: switcheroo-control fails to detect multi-gpu system

2018-05-04 Thread mtvoid
See https://github.com/hadess/switcheroo-control/issues/12

The bug occurs because switcheroo-control tries to query
/sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch, which is prevented under recent
kernels running with Secure Boot enabled, as they lock down access to
debugfs. Until the kernel is fixed to provide an alternative method to
query vgaswitcheroo information that'll work when booted under Secure
Boot and switcheroo-control is updated to use the new method, disabling
Secure Boot is the only way to restore functionality.

[Bug 1768734] [NEW] restoring edge tiled windows with client-side decorations shrinks them

2018-05-03 Thread mtvoid
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 with a vanilla GNOME session under Wayland (the
issue presents with the default Ubuntu session too). I've encountered
this issue with applications that use Client-Side window decorations,
which is most of the GNOME applications. Windows with borders drawn
through the window manager do not have this issue.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open an application that uses client-side decorations, e.g. gnome-terminal.
2. Edge tile the window by snapping the window to the left or right screen edge
via dragging or Super+left/right keyboard shortcut.
3. Unsnap the window to restore it to its non-tiled state.

Expected behaviour:
The position and dimensions of the window after undoing the edge tiling should
be restored to exactly what it was prior to tiling.

Observed behaviour:
Every time the window is unsnapped from the edge, its size gets smaller.
Repeating it over and over will lead to it eventually shrinking to the minimum
possible size.

I've found this issue only with client-side decorated windows, and only while
restoring from split view / edge tiling. Restoring from a normal maximized
state is ok.

That indicated some issue with libglib2.0-0. I was using the latest
GNOME packages, including libglib 2.37.0 from the ricotz testing PPA. I
reverted it back to 2.36.0, and now Skype works again. The issue I was
facing was not related to libGL, and I have resolved it for now. But I
thought of pointing this out, because maybe Skype will still crash for
anybody running with a newer version of glib, irrespective of which
graphics driver they are running.

[Bug 782855] Re: missing pixels (horizontal lines) in font rendering

2012-08-02 Thread mtvoid
I'm now using the intel xorg driver with the SNA backend enabled
(available since version 2.20 onwards, currently in several PPAs)
instead of UXA; it does not suffer from this problem.

[Bug 1024482] [NEW] Mouse cursor theme does not change from default after login

2012-07-13 Thread mtvoid
Public bug reported:

When using LightDM to login to a GNOME Shell session, the mouse cursor's
appearance does not change from what it is in the lightdm login screen
(black pointer from default X theme). Any custom mouse cursor theme
actually does apply within any open application windows, but hovering
the cursor over the window title bar, the root window, or the Shell
interface changes it back to the default black pointer, leading to an
inconsistent appearance.

Yes, that patch was the cause of the problem and is what was also
breaking resume from suspend. After upgrading to 3.0.0-15.25, the
problem's gone. I guess this bug can be closed now.

[Bug 907454] Re: [Dell Precision M4500] offlining and then re-onlining CPUs makes the system unresponsive

2011-12-29 Thread mtvoid
I am seeing this problem too on my desktop PC (DP55WB with Core i5 750
processor), running 11.10. After the upgrade, the system no longer
managed to resume from suspend, and would just freeze. I tried debugging
the suspend; it worked until the 'platform' stage by writing to
/sys/power/pm_test, but putting 'processors' would cause the system to
fail to recover from suspend, so I suspected that it is an SMP related
issue. I manually tried offlining a CPU, but trying to put it back
online afterwards does not succeed and leads to lots of kernel errors.

The problem exists in the 3.0 kernel in oneiric, and I've even installed
the 3.2-rc7 kernel from precise, but the issue remains. I'm attaching
the relevant section from the syslog (The first two lines are produced
after I offline CPU 3, the rest after I issue the command to bring it
back online).

[Bug 893514] Re: Launch Terminal and some other keyboard shortcuts not working

2011-12-13 Thread mtvoid
The keyboard shortcuts have been ported from the gconf backend to the
new gsettings backend in GNOME 3.3.2. The ricotz testing ppa however
does not have the new gnome-control-center package, so changing the
keyboard shortcuts with the 3.2.2 version of this package from the
Ubuntu repositories does nothing now. One has to manually change the
shortcuts via gsettings or dconf-editor, until a newer version of gnome-
control-center is uploaded to the ppa.

[Bug 576751] Re: wnck-applet has memory leak

2010-10-27 Thread mtvoid
Reading the report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
panel/+bug/17787 might give a clue to the source of the problem. The
real culprit seems to be the transparency of the panel. The panel with
the wnck-applet needs to have both auto-hide and transparency enabled
for the memory leak to show up (I just checked now, even if auto-hide is
off and only transparency is enabled, switching workspaces causes a
leak). After disabling transparency by changing the panel background to
None (but keeping auto-hide enabled), I am no longer seeing the memory
leak on my system. Can others confirm if they are seeing similar
results?
