[Bug 1577879] Re: File save as dialog doesn't switch to keyed in path anymore when pressing enter

2018-01-14 Thread naught101
GTK's file dialogue is still annoying in 17.10, yes. It would be great
if there was a way to always show the location bar, instead of the
useless breadcrumb bar.

@ADFH, where is the bug you reported upstream? Can you please post a
link?

[Bug 1715792] [NEW] GTK file picker dialogue shows too many mount points

2017-09-07 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

I'm running kubuntu 17.10 beta, and the GTK file picker dialogue (for
all GTK apps - e.g. firefox, thunderbird, GIMP, agave) is listing a
tonne of useless mount points in the left-most panel:

https://i.stack.imgur.com/TrJYy.png

Is there any way to hide these? Other posts suggest adding commands to
/etc/fstab, but none of these mount points are listed in fstab to begin
with..

These entries do not appear in the Qt file picker dialogue.

Hrm... replacing fglrx-updates with fglrx worked for me - I suspect
that's the same as reinstalling, since they're both at the same version
at the moment. Perhaps this was caused by a kernel update that didn't
update the driver module?

[Bug 1327015] [NEW] Connect to strongest known network first

2014-06-05 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

I have a bunch of WIFI networks that I use near my home. In most places,
I can see 3-5 of them, but only the one I'm closest to is really strong
enough to be useful. But knetworkmanager usually chooses to connect to
one of the weaker ones, and I have to manually tell it to connect to the
strongest one. It would be good for this to be automatic. Also, it would
be good if a connection dropped, for it to try to connect to the next
strongest network.

A process like this would be good:

1. Check the strength of all known networks in the area.
2. Connect to the strongest one.
3. If the connection strength drops below 30% (customisable), see if there are
stronger known networks available. Go to step 2.

[Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade

2013-11-09 Thread naught101
I'm hitting this bug, and I can't get any of the workarounds to work.
I'm on Kubuntu Saucy, and I've tried fglrx, fglrx-updates, fglrx from
x-edgers (https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
edgers/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=saucy), and three versions of
the AMD binary driver (13.4, 13.9, and 13.11 beta). Nothing works, I
get segfaults with everything, straight after it tries to load GLX (the
segfault byte identifier is different each time, but I guess that could
be because of un-related code changes). I didn't try the andrikos
version (https://launchpad.net/~andrikos/+archive/ppa) because it's not
available for saucy. Any ideas what else I can try?

[Bug 939863] Re: Warning message from ffmpeg program needs update

2013-10-31 Thread naught101
I agree with reagle. From a user's perspective, this is a really low
move on the part of the libav/ubuntu/debian team. Regardless of the
semantics, the name ffmpeg is inevitably linked to the ffmpeg.org
project. The message THIS PROGRAM IS DEPRECATED is highly deceptive,
especially now that ffmpeg and libav have started to diverge a bit more.
While it may be true that the /usr/bin/ffmpeg link in ubuntu is
deprecated, it's just an outright lie to say that the ffmpeg program is
deprecated. That's like saying making a link from msword to lowriter,
and then stating that Microsoft Office is deprecated.

Anyway, it's been, what, 3 or 4 versions of Ubuntu since this switch was
made? Why not just deprecate it already? Or is there some fear that then
users will start installing the real ffmpeg (e.g. from
https://launchpad.net/~jon-severinsson/+archive/ffmpeg), and using that
instead?

[Bug 667287] Re: bluetooth mouse response slows after suspend

2012-04-03 Thread naught101
As far as I can tell, the trigger condition of this is that a different
usb device (my phone in my case) is unplugged while the computer is in
sleep. It may be the case that this also happens when the device is
plugged in during sleep, I will continue testing. Plugging in and then
unplugging during sleep obviously doesn't trigger this - the computer
needs to wake in a different state.

[Bug 667287] Re: bluetooth mouse response slows after suspend

2012-03-19 Thread naught101
I'm having exactly these symptoms on kubuntu 11.10 with a wireless mouse
(logitech m215) on an eMachines em350 netbook. I've also tried
restarting kdm, and rmmod/modprobing usbhid and psmouse. Nothing works,
that I can see, except a reboot.

Please let me know if I can provide any more debugging info.

[Bug 737051] Re: [regression] Alps touchpad detected, but scrolling not working

2011-06-09 Thread naught101
Funicorn's workaround also works for me (although it's technically a
regression). But it appears to make external usb mice very jerky - eg.
3-4 fps or something, basically unusable. This basically means I have to
choose between being able to scroll on my trackpad, or use an external
mouse, but not both.

I'm getting a very similar-sounding bug with bcm4306 wireless, using the
b43 driver. The above fix does not work for me. With wicd I get Bad
password, with nm-applet, I get the stuff attached. Unfortunately, I
haven't had a chance to check other networks, this bug has only appeared
in the last 24 hours for me.

[Bug 527442] [NEW] Workrave hogs resources

On my system (Kubuntu Lucid), workrave uses massive amounts of ram and
CPU time. CPU time sits between 15% and 30%, and ram grows to about

[Bug 441103] [NEW] Juk doesn't read .aac/m4a meta data

2009-10-02 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdemultimedia

JuK won't read artist/album/title/etc. tags from .aac files (I'm
guessing they're m4a, can't remember, I ripped them ages ago).

It plays the files fine, and I can tell what the file is by looking at
the tag editor, which tells me the filename, but it's really annoying,
since I can't see any relevant information in the playlist.

I've tried installing libmp4v2-0, libmpeg4ip-0, faac, mpeg4ip-utils and
libfaac0, but no joy.

Running Kubuntu karmic, with everything fully up to date.

[Bug 371114] [NEW] massive artefacting in qt4 text areas (kate, skype, etc)

2009-05-02 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libqt4-core

When I use Qt4 applications, I randomly get massive artifacting in text
areas. Artefacts appear either as parts of the desktop (including
widgets), or as random chunks of large (20-40px?), bold text, in an un-
related font.

This happens once every 5-20 minutes, and can be fixed by re-drawing
what's on each pixel (ie. by highlighting the area of text under the
artefact, or scrolling the affected areas out of view)

This mostly happens in Kate, but also in skype, and possibly other
programs. It's always in the text area (chat window in skype).

will attach files to show some examples.

[Bug 356924] [NEW] [KDE] click to block auto-suspend does not work.

2009-04-07 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

If kde's battery monitor applet is set to auto-standby after a set period (ie.
10 minutes), it pops up a notification saying:
The computer will suspend to disk in 10 seconds. Click here to block the
process

If I click the notification, or close it, the process is not blocked,
and the system suspends. There is no button (cancel, or what ever) on
the notification, there is no way for me to halt the process once it's
started.

Having a cancel button on the notification would give some user feedback
(i.e. animation for button depressing).

[Bug 315001] [NEW] powerdevil doesn't recognise funtion-key screen brightness changes

2009-01-08 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: powerdevil

Changing the screen brightness with laptop function keys (Fn+up/down on
my dell) works, but doesn't appear to be recognised by powerdevil (the
battery monitor applet's screen brightness setting doesn't change).

This is problematic, as my screen is usually set to full brightness when
on power, but when I use the laptop at night, I prefer to turn it down.
If I do this with the keyboard, it works, but if I leave the computer
for long enough for powerdevil to dim the screen, when I come back, the
screen brightness resets to powerdevil's setting (which doesn't remember
my keyboard setting, as it never recognised it). This means I have to
change the brightness every time I come back to the computer, or change
it manually with the mouse in the battery monitor applet.

Re: [Bug 310418] Re: Links flicker in FF3 after switching tabs in Kubuntu jaunty

2009-01-05 Thread naught101
I don't think that's the problem. Mine looks like this, but I've
hibernated twice, so it's re-enabled the microsoft USB mouse twice:

$ grep Adding input /var/log/Xorg.0.log

(II) config/hal: Adding input device Macintosh mouse button emulation

(II) config/hal: Adding input device Microsoft Microsoft Notebook/Mobile

(II) config/hal: Adding input device Microsoft Microsoft Notebook/Mobile

I guess that the ps/2 mouse is the joybutton in the middle of my
keyboard. All three mice give the same response.

I don't know why the video bus is there twice - perhaps because I have a
d-bus video out?

Also, my xorg.conf has no pointer devices what so ever, just my video
device, monitor and screen.

[Bug 152487] Re: Jack output for xine apps

2008-12-28 Thread naught101
The jack plugin is just a single file -
/usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.24/xineplug_ao_out_jack.so

it can easily be installed by building from source, and then running:
cp /usr/local/lib/xine/plugins/1.24/xineplug_ao_out_jack.so
/usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.24/
then the entire /usr/local version of xine can safely be removed.

Why couldn't there be a package called something like 'libxine1-jack' in
universe which includes that plugin file, and depends on 'libxine1' (and
is compiled from the same version)?

[Bug 310418] [NEW] Links flicker in FF3 after switching tabs in Kubuntu jaunty

2008-12-21 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

After switching tabs in FF3 links flicker between hover and normal
styles. It doesn't usually matter, because clicking the link still
works, BUT if the hover style does something important, like opening a
sub-menu (like javascript nice-menus), then the sub-menus will also
flicker and usually be unusable.

[Bug 310418] Re: Links flicker in FF3 after switching tabs in Kubuntu jaunty

2008-12-21 Thread naught101
This may not be a firefox bug, but rather something to do with the
KDE/GTK crossover - I'm getting similar problems with inkscape when
trying to move objects with the mouse.

Basically, if the mouse moves, then inkscape seems to register that it's
moved, but once it's stopped moving, it goes back to the starting
position. If the mouse moves smoothly, it the object flickers between
the original position, and the new position.

[Bug 309534] [NEW] Jaunty kubuntu ubiquity won't manually edit partitions; creates swap wrong

2008-12-18 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity-frontend-kde

Basically, I have a fairly standard setup like:
/dev/sda1 / 8gb
/dev/sda2 swap 1.5gb
/dev/sda3 /home 40gb

I downloaded the Kubuntu daily live ISO (20081218.2), and tried the
installer, but I couldn't edit partitions (no dialogue box came up when
I clicked edit, either from the button down the bottom, or the right-
click menu).

Also, I tried to simply delete and replace sda1 and sda2, thinking I
could manually set up /home after the install. This worked ok for the
root partition, but when I created the swap partition, it set the mount
point as /home. again, I couldn't manually edit it.

[Bug 298902] Re: Closing lid after telling computer to shut down results in hibernate

2008-12-13 Thread naught101
This happens for me too, and has happened for me since dapper. I've
always run Kubuntu, I'm not sure it that's relevant.

Other related behaviour is that in 8.10, powerdevil hibernates when the
battery level is critical, but sometimes it takes longer than expected
(ie. will suspend to disk in ten seconds disappears, and hibernate
doesn't start for another 30). In this case, I sometimes manually
hibernate, hoping to avoid completely depleting my battery. The last
time I did this, I plugged in before booting, and then booted.
immediately after resuming from hibernation, the coputer immediately
hibernated again.

I Propose these changes to behaviour:
- After one task begins a hibernation/sleep/shutdown/reboot process, all
subsequent such tasks are immediately cancelled, or not allowed to start.
- No hibernation/sleep/shutdown/reboot processes may start within 5 (or 3?)
minutes of resuming from sleep or hibernation. This would allow the user to
save any documents open before the computer runs the critical battery task (ie.
hibernation, or shutdown)

[Bug 259278] Re: knetworkmanager will no longer connect

2008-11-23 Thread naught101
grahamt: the knetworkmanager in the intrepid repos is a dummy package -
it doesn't do anything by itself, it just depends on netowrk-manager-kde
(which is knetworkmanager renamed). If you installed from a CD,
knetworkmanager shouldn't be installed, and installing it won't change
anything (unless network-manager-kde also wasn't installed). If you
upgraded, the Hardy knetworkmanager is replaced with the dummy package,
which requests that network-manager-kde is installed.

In otherwords, if you already had the knetworkmanager program running,
then installing the knetworkmanager doesn't make a difference.

The only reason that might have fixed your problem, that I can think of,
is that network-manager-kde was somehow reconfigured at the same time,
however, I tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure network-manager-kde and it
didn't fix anything for me.
