2010-01-27 Thread oss_test_launchpad
This is what https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FoundationsTeam/LucidBootRecovery
says about the recovery mode in Ubuntu 10.04:

Previous releases have provided a friendly recovery menu when booting into
single-user mode, which provided options for checking filesystems and getting a
root shell, intended to allow system recovery. With the changes to event-based
mounting, and system daemon starting, it's often not possible to use this.

Doesn't sound good.

[Bug 513058] [NEW] [Lucid, Karmic] MAJOR REGRESSION: Evince does not print PDF to HP LaserJet 3380

2010-01-26 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Testing7.04-7.10-8.04-8.10-9.04-9.10-10.4 I observed a constant loss in
functionality as far as printing to a HP LaserJet 3380 is concerned.

From 7.04-9.04 printing worked fine.

9.10 showed some akward behaviour: Printing from the default PDF viewer,
it sometimes took ages to print. Also, unlike before, when calling the
print dialogue, for some seconds the window froze while it said
something like Informationen über Drucker werden geholt (getting
printer data). Printing PDFs, however, worked fine with xpdf.

Now testing 10.04 Alpha 2 with all of today's update, evince again
refuses to work. While the printer queue has been reporting the printer
as Ausführend (= executing print job), on attempt of repeating the
print job, the print dialogue says Bad pattern, whatever that may be.

I can provide additional information if you tell me which would be
needed.

The present 10.04 that is being tested is a 32-Bit version. 9.10 and
9.04 have been 64-Bit versions. Prior versions have probably been 32-bit
versions.

[Bug 486459] [NEW] SINCERE ERROR: Ubuntu 9.10: File name too long when copying files from ext3 USB HDD to internal ext4 HDD with encrypted home directory

2009-11-21 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ecryptfs-utils

A colleague backuped all his data from his home directory to an external
ext3 formatted USB HDD. He then installed a completely new Ubuntu 9.10,
using all of the computer's internal HD for that, choosing that new
installation option that makes the system encrypt the home directory, in
order to have the data protected in case the computer is stolen when
he's travelling. He chose ext4 as the file system for the internal HDD.

He then tried to copy his backuped data from the external USB HDD to the
computer's internal HDD. Unfortunately, the computer keeps telling File
name too long, so he cannot copy all of his files. My colleague has to
use quite long file names sometimes, but this has not been a problem
before. Especially, there had been no problem when copying his data from
the internal HDD to the external HDD without using encryption.

I filed this bug against ecryptfs-utils. I hope this is right. I'm not
quite sure if ecryptfs is the program that does this encryption thing.

2009-09-04 Thread oss_test_launchpad

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-data-server-common

After more than two years of testing various versions of Evolution which
came with various Ubuntu releases, I can see no progress whatsoever as
far as the question of function in connection with an Exchange 2003
server is concerned, so I wondered if Evolution could be completely
uninstalled from a 9.04 system which runs on an Eee PC with only 4 GB
internal flash memory (i.e. on a machine where one can't waste memory
for programs that one does not use).

I was amazed to see that evolution-data-server-common cannot be
uninstalled via Synaptic unless you wish to remove ubuntu-desktop,
gnome-panel and various other important packages, too, which would
basically mean that you would wreck your system.

I wonder why the Ubuntu developers would want to stipulate that Ubuntu
users have to use Evolution.

[Bug 423087] [NEW] Jaunty: Display often flickers and trackpad often not useable on Eee PC - 4G surf (701)

2009-09-02 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Test installed Ubuntu 9.04 32-Bit Desktop on an Eee PC - 4G surf (701).
Every now and then the screen starts to flicker heavily and the mouse
cannot be used (mouse pointer does not move). To me it seems as if this
was some bug in some part of Ubuntu that manages the X server.

Sometimes it seems as if the right or left click button of the trackpad
was permanently being clicked even though it is not.

I do not think that this problem is due to a hardware defect since my
colleague for whom I am testing this says that he has never seen this
problem with prior versions of Ubuntu on this machine.

[Bug 411368] Re: [needs-packaging] zimbra

2009-09-02 Thread oss_test_launchpad
At CNET News they say: Zimbra's server software is Java-based software
that competes chiefly with Microsoft Exchange. People who need to access
it to use e-mail, calendars and contact lists can use a basic Web
browser interface or a fancier Ajax-based interface.
support/2100-7344_3-6181361.html).

Here is a quote from Mark Shuttleworth regarding the Zimbra Desktop
(AFAIK you can run the server and have a feature-rich web frontend
without installing that client software): The Zimbra Desktop client
will not only enhance the usability features of the world-class Zimbra
Collaboration Suite, but will also provide the Ubuntu community with
another compelling application for their desktop of choice.

Don't know what you would need the Zimbra Desktop for. Don't know if it
is of much use without the Zimbra server, either. This bug report seems
to relate to the Zimbra server software, not to the client software.

Anyway: According to the article quoted from, Mark Shuttleworth's quote
is nearly two and a half years old or even older. However, there's still
no Zimbra to be found in Synaptic.

[Bug 261573] Re: Intrepid: No AltGr key defined - e.g. no @ symbol with MacBook Pro

2009-08-28 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Ok, just tested it with Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 2 live Desktop. You can switch
the keyboard to Apple MacBook/MacBook Pro (Intl) without getting any
error message. What a progress after a year!

However, there is still no @ sign by default. Also, I did not manage
to configure it by defining a Third Level Chooser. Seems that Ubuntu
does not even know the key that IMHO might well be used as the AltGr key
and which I called the strange key (see above).

Btw. someone edited my original posting typing some workaround into my
text. I do not consider this to be useful.

@ Bryce Harrington: Personally, I do not think that Ubuntu users should
be forced to open additional accounts and to make things even more
complicated by having to post bugs upstream.

[Bug 420512] [NEW] Karmic: CRITICAL ERROR: Ubuntu kills MacBook Pro display!

2009-08-28 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Just tested Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 2 Live Desktop 64-Bit on a MacBook Pro
rev. 3. First, it seemed to work ok apart from nearly burning down the
machine (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/262550). The display seemed
brighter than usually, which I thought was fine.

The moment when I clicked Live User in order to shut down, the
backlight went out. Ten seconds before, I had deactivated Bluetooth by
clicking this option in GNOME's Bluetooth manager. Don't know if this
has anything to do with the display problem. Doesn't seem so to me.

How do I know the display backlight has been permanently destroyed or
disabled? Thanks to this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/127790, which
has guaranteed me approx. 30 seconds of a white-blue-grey screen
whenever I switched on the machine, whereas now the display is black
after switching on the machine.

When I boot Ubuntu, I can only see a bit thanks to the lamp on the
ceiling of my office.

My last hope is that Ubuntu has just somehow damaged the EFI or
something and that that can be repaired.

I always had to boot up Ubuntu using a live Desktop CD (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub/+bug/339979). Don't know
if this has anything to do with the display problem. Doesn't seem so to
me.

Just tried this:

1. Switched off machine.
2. Disconnected AC power and removed the battery.
3. Pressed On/Off switch for 5 seconds.
4. Put in battery, re-connected AC power.
5. Pressed On/Off in order to restart machine.

This was recommended on

[Bug 383212] [NEW] xGPS manager (car navigation for the iPhone 3G) not available in Ubuntu 9.04

2009-06-03 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

AFAIK currently an app called xGPS is the only full scale car navigation
system (including voice guide) for the iPhone 3G. It uses Google Maps
and as far as I read somewhere it can also handle OpenStreetMaps.

Problem is that by default it seems to work only on an offboard basis,
i.e. you need a (probably preferably UMTS) reliable internet connection
to navigate, which is not available everywhere and which can produce
high roaming costs when you are abroad.

xGPS Manager (http://xgps.xwaves.net/index.php/Downloads) is a desktop
program which enables you to copy maps into your iPhone which would then
enable you to navigate on standalone device basis, without an internet
connection.

xGPS Manager is already available for Linux
(http://xgps.xwaves.net/download/xgpsmanager/xGPSManager-1.1.tar.gz).
From a legal point of view, would it be possible for you to package this
software for Ubuntu 9.10?

[Bug 378015] [NEW] Jaunty: iTunes does not start with WINE (installation seems to work ok), therefore no iPhone 3G activation from Jaunty

[Bug 372228] [NEW] Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04: Check sum error reported

2009-05-05 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

A colleague of mine downloaded Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 for his Asus
EEE PC 4G Surf (*.img file, downloadable from
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook).

He then put the image file on an USB stick using the usb-imagewriter
package, as described on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromImgFiles#Ubuntu.

usb-imagewriter put the image onto the stick and reported Success.

My colleague then booted Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) from the above
mentioned USB stick and then intended to perform the integrity test.
There was the first bug: Even though UNR is made for notebooks without a
CD/DVD drive and even though UNR is obviously meant to be installed from
a USB stick, the integrity test item on the installtion start screen
mentioned CD/DVD only, so there was no obviously right way of checking
the USB stick for integrity.

Secondly, my colleague performed the above mentioned CD/DVD test from
the start screen (applying it to the USB stick). After checking the
image, the integrity test tool reported that there had been errors found
in one file (or one error found, I don't quite remember).

[Bug 372239] [NEW] Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04: VERY slow graphics on Asus EEE PC 4G (probably Intel 915GML)

2009-05-05 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

A colleague of mine installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) on an Asus EEE
PC 4G. There were some issues during the installation, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/372228. I don't know if this is
related with the following bug.

Ubuntu 8.04 had been running very smoothly on that system, whereas with
UNR 9.04 it is hardly possibly to even use the mouse. When he tries to
use the mouse, there is a constant jerking. Windows open in way like you
would try to run a new GNOME system on a Pentium 90. Seems to me there
is something very much wrong with either the UNR GUI or the graphics

Sebastien, thanks for this hint. Noticed that you have to install
evolution-exchange additionally in Evolution. This is new. So far,
evolution-exchange has always been part of Ubuntu's default installation

(deliberately or accidentally?).

[Bug 347968] [NEW] Jaunty: Since update, MS Exchange Server support has gone (Evolution)

2009-03-24 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Until I updated to Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha 5+, Evolution had a function for
connecting to MS Exchange servers (through a buggy but sometimes working
OWA connector). Jaunty now features Evolution 2.26.0 and now you cannot
make up new Exchange accounts any more (there is not even an option for
this any more). This is a crucial error here because it means I can no
longer work with Ubuntu but I will have to switch back to MS Windows and
MS Office Outlook in order to get my company work done. What's the
purpose of this?

[Bug 346042] [NEW] Jaunty, Intrepid: Since update, the networkmanager GUI cannot handle external ethernet / LAN device any more

2009-03-20 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

There is an external LAN connected device which I could always connect
with using networkmanager in the past. It has a static IP, and there is
a router between the computer and the device.

I had a profile for this device in my cable bound connections in the
networkmanager GUI. When I updated Intrepid a few weeks ago, I could not
use it any more for no obvious reason.

Replaced the 8.04 install by a completely new fresh Ubuntu 9.04. Made up
a new profile. At first, all worked, but when I updated a few days ago,
the connection could not be established any more.

Strange thing is: When I right click the networkmanager icon, I can see
it, but when I left click the icon, only Autoeth0 as the only cable
bound connection is offered (plus a WLAN in reach).

2009-03-18 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Just read that I/O errors can be caused by hardware, too (http://www

discussion would be that Ubuntu provides a more detailed error message
on the GUI. As I read in http://www.ntfs-3g.org/support.html#ioerror,
Ubuntu logs everything important in this context anyway, so the
information is actually there.

[Bug 344841] [NEW] Jaunty: Function for dumping all MS Exchange server data missing in Evolution

2009-03-18 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Considerung the numerous known problems with Evolution and the OWA
connector, it would be very important to have a function that would
enable you to dump (backup) all data stored on your MS Exchange server
account. I believe Evolution had such a function in the past, as MS
Office Outlook has it, but it has gone. This would be a regression.

[Bug 342341] Re: Jaunty: Firefox does not get along with OWA Premium of an MS Exchange server

2009-03-17 Thread oss_test_launchpad
John, my idea why it is a Firefox issue is based on the fact that even
when you change the user agent you get to see the Premium view, but as
described above it is not functional. Only the Premium view provides
essential features like searching for emails or contacts. I believe
there is a technical function missing in Firefox that would enable it to
work with an OWA Premium site.

I only brought up WINE etc. in order to show that currently whatever you
try there is no way of getting Jaunty to work properly with an MS
Exchange server. Sorry if that confused you.

Maybe you could do your own test, using an average notebook, big files

with Ubuntu's NTFS write support. Sorry if this sounds more than vague.

[Bug 262550] Re: WARNING: Intrepid might burn down MacBook Pro

2009-03-16 Thread oss_test_launchpad
I confirm this problem for a MacBook Pro rev. 3 with Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha
5+ with all of today's updates. Question is whether this is a new bug or
the old one again.

This notebook does have a fan, I don't quite get it why Ubuntu hardly
ever switches it on and prefers to have the notebook burnt down.

[Bug 119886] Re: Intrepid, Hardy: Evolution loses connection with Microsoft Exchange server

2009-03-16 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Ok, and now half a year has gone by, and still no one seems to care
about this bug here. Ubuntu version tested here is 9.04 Alpha 5+ with
all of today's updates. Evolution version is 2.25.92. Error message is
the same, the only difference being that now the first half of it is in
German while the second half is still in English. Btw. none of my
colleagues wants to work with Ubuntu. Guess why? They cannot use Ubuntu
for work with an MS Exchange server.

[Bug 342341] Re: Jaunty: Firefox does not get along with OWA Premium of an MS Exchange server

2009-03-16 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Whoever marked this WINE and Invalid for Firefox made a mistake.
This is no WINE bug. It has nothing to do with WINE at all. WINE is not
even involved. This is about Firefox's behaviour when trying to work
with OWA premium using the User Agent Switcher plugin.

[Bug 342798] [NEW] Intrepid: OpenOffice.org Impress presentation is destroyed when you change location of pictures that are part of the presentation

2009-03-14 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Created a presentation from scratch using OpenOffice.org 2.4.something
Impress and Ubuntu 8.10 64-Bit. Copied some photos into this
presentation. When a few days later I had reorganized the folder
structure in my home directory and thereby moved the photos into some
other location, the whole presentation was destroyed: Instead of
pictures, I had sort of file not found placeholders on all slides
where before I had had photos. Apparently, OpenOffice.org Impress does
not embed photos you use with its presentations. I my personal opinion
this is bad.

[Bug 229175] Re: impossible to import bookmarks

2009-03-13 Thread oss_test_launchpad
IMHO this IS a bug report. Why shouldn't it be?

Same problem here:

Starting Firefox,

[Bug 342266] Re: Jaunty: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 not installable under WINE

2009-03-13 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Okay, this was partly my error. Double clicking an *.exe seems to
automatically start the Archivmanager. The above mentioned error
message is from the Archivmanager. (Why would anyone would want to by-

Trying to to start it with WINE, this error message occurs:

This is probably due to an attempted installation of Microsoft Internet
Explorer 7 under WINE which did not work either (see this bug report:

[Bug 342326] [NEW] Jaunty: WINE Error - Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 does not start

2009-03-13 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine

Installed Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 in WINE, setting the WINE
configuration for the installer to a simulated Windows XP environment.
The installer went throught the installation routine for MS Word, MS
Excel and MS Outlook (though a little too fast for my taste) with no
problem.

When I click Anwendungen - Sonstige - Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, I
get an error message (Microsoft Office Outlook kann nicht gestartet
werden).

Since Evolution's way of dealing with an MS Exchange server is far from
being ready for productive use and MS Internet Explorer (which would
enable you to use OWA Premium) is not available for Linux, this is quite
dramatic for me (means that I cannot do my company work and I will have
to switch back to MS Windows).

One thing that might be interesting in context with this bug report:
Even though I clicked MS Word, MS Outlook and MS Excel for
installation (in the installer), Ubuntu actually only provides a program
launcher icon for MS Office Outlook, but PLUS icons for Microsoft
Clip Organizer, Microsoft Office 2003 Assistent zum Speichern eigener
Einstellungen, Microsoft Office Anwendungswiederherstellung,
Microsoft Office Document Imaging and Microsoft Office Picture
Manager, all of which I never chose for installation.

[Bug 342341] [NEW] Jaunty: Firefox does not get along with OWA Premium of an MS Exchange server

2009-03-13 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

I experienced that when you have to work with an MS Exchange server in
your company, Ubuntu completely fails on you.

As far is I experienced, Evolution's OWA connector is far from being
ready for productive use and there seems little or little useful
response to OWA connector or Evolution related bug reports in Launchpad.

This is more than bad since it does not seem to be possible to run MS
Outlook 2003 under WINE either
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wine/+bug/342326).

One theoretical way out might be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 7
under WINE but this doesn't seem to work yet either
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wine/+bug/342326).

So I tried to simply install the Firefox User Agent Switcher plugin
and set Firefox's user agent to Internet Explorer 7 (Windows Vista).
Well, Firefox then loads the OWA Premium
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outlook_Web_Access#Technology) view which
if it worked would give you a nearby substitute for the MS Outlook 2003
client or the MS Outlook 2007 client. However, if you click anything
there, nothing happens. There is a large error message printed into the
OWA Premium screen which says:

/exchweb/img/tf_Messages.xsltable-layout:fixed;width:100%;NachrichtenBKBMBfalseKeine

which tells you that it isn't enough to just change the user agent ID
tag. However, I wonder it would be possible to run OWA Premium without
the above mentioned bug, using Mozilla Firefox. (If not, I will have to
switch back to MS Windows.)
