[Bug 879228] Re: files written to CIFS share are sometimes corrupted

2011-10-28 Thread phireph0x
Joseph: thanks for the suggestion.

I've downloaded Linux-3.1 (final) from kernel.org
(http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/linux-3.1.tar.bz2) and
created Ubuntu packages, using the Ubuntu kernel build instructions here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild

I rebooted and tested writing to the CIFS share with my custom 3.1
kernel, and unfortunately the problem still exists.

[Bug 879228] Re: files written to CIFS share are sometimes corrupted

2011-10-24 Thread phireph0x
Update:

I rebooted one of our upgraded servers running 11.10 into a previous
kernel, 2.6.38-11-server. I tested my program, viewed the file, and it
appeared normal (again, same input, same program, writing data to the
NAS CIFS share).

So this is definitely a bug in the 3.0 kernel that ships with 11.10,
since running 2.6.38-11 on the _same_ 11.10 system works and 3.0
doesn't, with no other library or system changes.

** Changed in: ubuntu
   Status: New = Confirmed

** Tags added: cifs kernel-bug

** Package changed: ubuntu = linux (Ubuntu)

[Bug 879228] [NEW] files written to CIFS share are sometimes corrupted

2011-10-20 Thread phireph0x
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 11.10

I've noticed an anomaly when running a program that creates a small
number of output files on a CIFS network share. One of the output files
contains a long string of ^@ (ASCII NULL). The other lines appear to be

[Bug 642555] Re: Services not starting on boot in 10.04.1 LTS

2010-09-29 Thread phireph0x
I misspoke in Comment #3.
text prevents X from starting.
I believe the removal of slash and quiet prevent the normal boot graphics.

Oh, I've tried removing 'quiet splash' as well, without any change in
behavior. In fact, this is still configured in /etc/defaults/grub:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= (old value was =quite splash).

[Bug 642555] Re: Services not starting on boot in 10.04.1 LTS

2010-09-27 Thread phireph0x
runlevel is N 2.

I've tried the --verbose boot param in grub, haven't tried the text at
the beginning of the line.

I've commented out console output in all /etc/init/*.conf files.

I've tried editing /etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf, changing:
start on filesystem and net-device-up IFACE=lo
to this:
start on filesystem and started rsyslog and net-device-up IFACE=lo

I've also tried:
sudo apt-get install ifupdown --reinstall --purge

(These last two were suggested here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9480172postcount=20, which was
linked as a suggested workaround in the bug 554172 comments).

As mentioned, also updated to the version of upstart that supposedly
fixed this craziness, but alas, it didn't resolve the issue for me.

[Bug 554172] Re: system services using console output not starting at boot

2010-09-21 Thread phireph0x
For anyone who is still experiencing problems with services not
starting at boot, I suggest you open a new bug (feel free to subscribe
me - robbie.w is my ID). There could be any number of reasons why a
particular service won't start, and we'd rather you open a new bug than
add to this one. If we determine the issue is the same, we will just dup
your bug to this one.

Thanks,
Robbie

I've created a new bug, as requested, detailing the issues I'm still
experiencing regarding services not starting on boot. I've subscribed
you to the bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/642555).

[Bug 642555] [NEW] Services not starting on boot in 10.04.1 LTS

2010-09-18 Thread phireph0x
Public bug reported:

I've had an issue for awhile now where on system reboot, certain
services don't automatically start. Some affected include: nginx and a
few custom CGI init scripts. These are all set to automatically start
on boot, according to rcconf. Nothing interesting is logged to
/var/log/boot{.log}.

I'd believed this was an upstart issue and related to bug 554172
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/554172)
I tried the workarounds until an official fix was release, but neither the
workarounds nor the official patch solved the issue for me.

I've also tried disabling plymouth as described in the upstart bug
thread, by first removing 'quiet splash' from the GRUB menu, and then by
purging the plymouth package. This likewise had no effect on my issue.

Another possibly related observance is 'shutdown -r now' doesn't work.
Upon running it, I get the console message System is going down for
reboot, but my shell isn't logged out, and it never reboots. If I do
the 'reboot' command that works, but it hangs the SSH session, so it
doesn't seem like a proper reboot has occurred.

[Bug 554172] Re: system services not starting at boot

2010-08-17 Thread phireph0x
I updated to upstart 0.6.5-7, rebooted, and have the same issues with
services not starting. Specifically, nginx doesn't start, and I have
two CGI services that interact with nginx, that don't start on boot.
I've checked with rcconf, and all 3 are labelled to start on boot.
Checking some of the logs (/var/log/messages, /var/log/syslog, and
/var/log/boot{.log}) doesn't reveal anything that would indicate a
problem with these services, as far as I can tell.

A related issue, that I mentioned earlier, is that 'shutdown -r now'
doesn't work. I get the System is shutting down message on my
console, but nothing happens. I have to use 'reboot', and this seems to
work consistently. From some of the Ubuntu forum conmments, it seems
like this is possibly related to the upstart problems.

[Bug 554172] Re: CUPS and other system services not starting at boot

2010-07-22 Thread phireph0x
RE: Mike Bianchi Yes, I tried ALL of the instructions suggested:
commenting out 'console output' in /etc/init/*.conf files, adding the
rsyslog config line to /etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf, and adding the
init='/sbin/init --verbose' line to the grub config. This didn't
solve my problem: I still have services that don't start on reboot,
including nginx and a couple fastcgi init scripts.

An interesting, possibly related, thing that I've noticed is when I
issue 'shutdown -r now', sometimes the machine doesn't reboot. I've had
to issue the command again to get the machine to actually reboot.

I'll add my 2 cents that this issue is quite dire (what organization
wants a server that doesn't reliably start services on boot?), and hope
that Canonical is working on a fix.

[Bug 488340] Re: Broadcom STA Wireless driver for bcm4322 silently disconnects frequently

2010-07-08 Thread phireph0x
Earlier I'd commented that the problem was resolved, but I'm still
seeing the issue. I've performed a clean installation of Ubuntu 10.04
Netbook Remix on my Dell Latitude 2100 netbook. The silent disconnect
issue is persistent; I can't maintain a stable connection to any of the
wireless networks I use without issues with other devices. I'm using
the Ubuntu provided drivers, bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36+bdcom-
0ubuntu3. I wonder if Broadcom is aware of this issue, as this is a
proprietary driver, so the Canonical folks can't consult the source to
debug issues.

[Bug 543506] Re: Some services not started on boot, runlevel returns unknown

2010-06-30 Thread phireph0x
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 554172 ***

I'm seeing this issue as well. I don't see the unknown when running
runlevel, but several services aren't starting up automatically.

Any word on a fix for this?

I should add to my previous comment that I've tried some of the
workarounds mentioned in this thread, including commenting out console
output in all /etc/init/*.conf files. This had no effect, and services
such as lighttpd aren't automatically starting that should be.

[Bug 554172] Re: CUPS and other system services not starting at boot

2010-06-30 Thread phireph0x
I agree it's probably not the exact same issue, but definitely in the
upstart has a race condition bucket of issues.

I'm kinda impressed that you've gone through the heroics of rebooting
your machine 500 times in the name of bug-squashing... that's
persistence :-P

That doesn't sound like the exact same issue. Well over 500 restarts
here and absolute consistency found, in that either I get runlevel N 2
and all services started fine or I get runlevel unknown and services not
started (in my case proftpd and cupsd).

No doubt they are similar and most likely caused by race conditions
being created in the way upstart handles starting up services.

Anyone else happily go back to a slower bootup time if it gave them some
control over what order services started up? :D

[Bug 488340] Re: Broadcom STA Wireless driver for bcm4322 silently disconnects frequently

2010-02-20 Thread phireph0x
I was able to get my issues resolved by using the proprietary drivers
available on Broadcom's Linux site, and compiling the driver myself
(replacing the one provided by the Ubuntu package):
http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php

The latest driver (5.60.48.36 as of this writing) worked flawlessly, and
the random disconnect issues have been fixed. Ubuntu should be able to
just upgrade their package to Broadcom's latest driver and resolve this
bug.

[Bug 473436] Re: Primary monitor doesn't wake up out of power save mode

2010-01-08 Thread phireph0x
In the nvidia release notes for driver version 190.53
(http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_amd64_190.53.html), there's
mention in the release notes of a DisplayPort bugfix:

- Fixed a problem that caused resolution limitations or corruption
on certain DisplayPort devices such as the Apple 24 Cinema display or
some DisplayPort to VGA adapters.

This could be related to the power management issue.

[Bug 488340] Re: Broadcom STA Wireless driver for bcm4322 silently disconnects frequently

2009-12-29 Thread phireph0x
I have this issue on Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 running on a Dell
Latitude 2100, which has a Broadcom BCM4322 wireless adapter. In my
case, I've ping tested several times from 4 different (wireless)
machines on the same network, including the netbook with the issue. The
other thee machines have 0% packet loss (tested 1000 pings), the netbook
has between 13 and 25%. So I know it's not the wireless router.

Also, since I'm seeing packet loss with ping testing, the trick of
pinging to keep the connection alive, as described by theisu, doesn't
seem to work.

I have the bcmwl-kernel-source package driver, version 5.10.91.9+bdcom-
0ubuntu4.

2009-11-11 Thread phireph0x
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

Printing to either of my network printers worked fine in 9.04, but is
now broken in 9.10. When I try to print a PDF, from either evince or

queue, and disappears as if complete, but nothing is printed. This
happens for both network printers (HP Laserjet 4100N and HP Color

troubleshooting txt file from troubleshooting in the printing

[Bug 74362] Re: usb wireless device zd1211rw 5-2:1.0: zd_chip_control_leds error -19

2007-12-23 Thread phireph0x
a slight clarification of my comment above: the USB device stops
working randomly on its own, and at that point i try to remedy the
situation by unplugging the device/plugging back in. i'm not unplugging
it haphazardly for giggles trying to test its robustness (which is the
way my earlier post could be construed) :-)

[Bug 138094] Re: [Gutsy] desktop and keyboard freezes while mouse is moveable

2007-12-06 Thread phireph0x
i guess i should mention the behavior i experience is similar to that
mentioned above: my desktop and keyboard are completely unresponsive,
but i can move the mouse pointer... i can't click or type anything
though, and none of the key combos (ctrl + alt + backspace and friends)
work. this seems to happen unpredictably.

[Bug 138094] Re: [Gutsy] desktop and keyboard freezes while mouse is moveable

2007-12-06 Thread phireph0x
Ditto for me. I have an Athlon 64 3400+ with a Radeon 9800 Pro video
card using xorg drivers. The crash seems to occur randomly... I have
Compiz enabled with several effects, and have been sleeping/resuming my
machine as well. The GUI will sometimes report an error occurred while
putting this computer into sleep mode, but I can't find any evidence in
the logs (dmesg, /var/log/messages, kern.log). Any ideas as to what
might be causing this?
