[Bug 879228] Re: files written to CIFS share are sometimes corrupted
Joseph: thanks for the suggestion. I've downloaded Linux-3.1 (final) from kernel.org (http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/linux-3.1.tar.bz2) and created Ubuntu packages, using the Ubuntu kernel build instructions here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild I rebooted and tested writing to the CIFS share with my custom 3.1 kernel, and unfortunately the problem still exists. ** Tags removed: needs-upstream-testing ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/879228 Title: files written to CIFS share are sometimes corrupted To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/879228/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 879228] Re: files written to CIFS share are sometimes corrupted
Update: I rebooted one of our upgraded servers running 11.10 into a previous kernel, 2.6.38-11-server. I tested my program, viewed the file, and it appeared normal (again, same input, same program, writing data to the NAS CIFS share). So this is definitely a bug in the 3.0 kernel that ships with 11.10, since running 2.6.38-11 on the _same_ 11.10 system works and 3.0 doesn't, with no other library or system changes. ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: New = Confirmed ** Tags added: cifs kernel-bug ** Package changed: ubuntu = linux (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/879228 Title: files written to CIFS share are sometimes corrupted To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/879228/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 879228] Re: files written to CIFS share are sometimes corrupted
** Description changed: Ubuntu 11.10 I've noticed an anomaly when running a program that creates a small number of output files on a CIFS network share. One of the output files - contains a long string of ^@ (ASCII NULL). The other lines appear to be - normal, but there aren't as many as expected (6 instead of 1,000). + appears to be corrupted: the first line contains a long string of ^@ + (ASCII NULL), followed by the expected data (tab-delimited numeric + values). The other lines appear to be normal, but there aren't as many + as expected (6 instead of 1,000). - Interestingly, if I run the program with the top 100 attributes, I see - no issues. But if I run with the top 1000, the odd ^@ characters - appear. + Interestingly, if I run the program with the top 100 attributes, + resulting in an output file with 100 lines, I see no issues. But if I + run with the top 1,000 (output file with 1,000 lines), the odd ^@ + characters appear. If I run the same program and save the output files to the local drive, the aforementioned file is valid: no ^@ characters and the correct number of lines. This leads me to believe that it has something to do with the CIFS-mounted network share. The share is mounted via CIFS from our NAS, a Sun Storage 7110. Note: we've recently upgraded our servers to 11.10, and were previously running 10.04. This issue wasn't present in 10.04. One of our desktops is running 11.04, and this issue doesn't manifest itself there either (same program, input data, writing to the network share). runlevel is N 2. I've tried the --verbose boot param in grub, haven't tried the text at the beginning of the line. I've commented out console output in all /etc/init/*.conf files. I've tried editing /etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf, changing: start on filesystem and net-device-up IFACE=lo to this: start on filesystem and started rsyslog and net-device-up IFACE=lo I've also tried: sudo apt-get install ifupdown --reinstall --purge (These last two were suggested here http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9480172postcount=20, which was linked as a suggested workaround in the bug 554172 comments). [Bug 642555] [NEW] Services not starting on boot in 10.04.1 LTS
Public bug reported: I've had an issue for awhile now where on system reboot, certain services don't automatically start. Some affected include: nginx and a few custom CGI init scripts. These are all set to automatically start on boot, according to rcconf. Nothing interesting is logged to /var/log/boot{.log}. I'd believed this was an upstart issue and related to bug 554172 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/554172) I tried the workarounds until an official fix was release, but neither the workarounds nor the official patch solved the issue for me. I've also tried disabling plymouth as described in the upstart bug thread, by first removing 'quiet splash' from the GRUB menu, and then by purging the plymouth package. This likewise had no effect on my issue. Another possibly related observance is 'shutdown -r now' doesn't work. Upon running it, I get the console message System is going down for reboot, but my shell isn't logged out, and it never reboots. If I do the 'reboot' command that works, but it hangs the SSH session, so it doesn't seem like a proper reboot has occurred. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Services not starting on boot in 10.04.1 LTS https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/642555 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 554172] Re: system services not starting at boot
I updated to upstart 0.6.5-7, rebooted, and have the same issues with services not starting. Specifically, nginx doesn't start, and I have two CGI services that interact with nginx, that don't start on boot. I've checked with rcconf, and all 3 are labelled to start on boot. Checking some of the logs (/var/log/messages, /var/log/syslog, and /var/log/boot{.log}) doesn't reveal anything that would indicate a problem with these services, as far as I can tell. A related issue, that I mentioned earlier, is that 'shutdown -r now' doesn't work. I get the System is shutting down message on my console, but nothing happens. I have to use 'reboot', and this seems to work consistently. From some of the Ubuntu forum conmments, it seems like this is possibly related to the upstart problems. -- system services not starting at boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554172 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 554172] Re: CUPS and other system services not starting at boot
RE: Mike Bianchi Yes, I tried ALL of the instructions suggested: commenting out 'console output' in /etc/init/*.conf files, adding the rsyslog config line to /etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf, and adding the init='/sbin/init --verbose' line to the grub config. This didn't solve my problem: I still have services that don't start on reboot, including nginx and a couple fastcgi init scripts. An interesting, possibly related, thing that I've noticed is when I issue 'shutdown -r now', sometimes the machine doesn't reboot. I've had to issue the command again to get the machine to actually reboot. I'll add my 2 cents that this issue is quite dire (what organization wants a server that doesn't reliably start services on boot?), and hope that Canonical is working on a fix. -- CUPS and other system services not starting at boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554172 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 554172] Re: CUPS and other system services not starting at boot
I agree it's probably not the exact same issue, but definitely in the upstart has a race condition bucket of issues. I'm kinda impressed that you've gone through the heroics of rebooting your machine 500 times in the name of bug-squashing... that's persistence :-P That doesn't sound like the exact same issue. Well over 500 restarts here and absolute consistency found, in that either I get runlevel N 2 and all services started fine or I get runlevel unknown and services not started (in my case proftpd and cupsd). No doubt they are similar and most likely caused by race conditions being created in the way upstart handles starting up services. Anyone else happily go back to a slower bootup time if it gave them some control over what order services started up? :D On 30/06/10 21:08, phireph0x wrote: As I mentioned in #543506, I'm also seeing this issue on Ubuntu Server 10.04. I was able to get my issues resolved by using the proprietary drivers available on Broadcom's Linux site, and compiling the driver myself (replacing the one provided by the Ubuntu package): http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php The latest driver (5.60.48.36 as of this writing) worked flawlessly, and the random disconnect issues have been fixed. [Bug 488340] Re: Broadcom STA Wireless driver for bcm4322 silently disconnects frequently
I have this issue on Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 running on a Dell Latitude 2100, which has a Broadcom BCM4322 wireless adapter. In my case, I've ping tested several times from 4 different (wireless) machines on the same network, including the netbook with the issue. The other thee machines have 0% packet loss (tested 1000 pings), the netbook has between 13 and 25%. So I know it's not the wireless router. Also, since I'm seeing packet loss with ping testing, the trick of pinging to keep the connection alive, as described by theisu, doesn't seem to work.
