[Bug 972127] [NEW] laptop screen shows no output with Linux 3.0.0-15-generic or 3.0.0-17-generic

The system is an Asus UL20FT-A1 laptop.  
Kernel 3.0.0-12-generic has no display issues, but 3.0.0-15-generic and 
3.0.0-17-generic will not output to the laptop's built-in display.  All of the 
above kernels work with HDMI and VGA outputs.

Under 3.0.0-17-generic, I can change screen brightness, but all I see is a dark 
purple background.  
Attempting to switch to a virtual console has no effect on the display.

I had the same problem on my Asus UL20FT, and David Henningsson's
solution worked for me.  The problem was present in at least 10.10 and
11.04.

I fixed the rt73 error in the deb package for powering off the Nvidia
chip in Asus UL*V* laptops.  I also added better hibernate and suspend

I have the same problem with two udevd processes, but I'm running 9.10
and evms can no longer take the blame.
