[Bug 819144] Re: [fglrx] everything is black and blinks when using unity

2011-10-15 Thread Rafal Cieslak
This is loosely related, and since this bug has been already fixed,
please report a new one.

2011/10/15, Jaime Fernando Ortega Culaciati jaimefort...@gmail.com:
I don't know what's happening, my session works perfectly... but the
problem is that this happens when I use the Guest Account :S, the
problem is the same, should i create another report?

[Bug 819144] Re: [fglrx] everything is black and blinks when using unity

2011-08-25 Thread Rafal Cieslak
I can confirm that, as Gyula Pataki wrote, recent upgrades plus Catalyst
11.8 fixes this. Note that the compiz-testing PPA is not needed, at
least in my case I got it working without this PPA (which was empty at
the moment). Moreover, the fglrx from ubuntu repository still does not
work with unity, so I guess we just need to wait until it's pushed to
repos (or alternatively download 11.8 from ADM driver website).

[Bug 819144] Re: [fglrx] everything is black and blinks when using unity

2011-08-25 Thread Rafal Cieslak
@Jamie: I do have tried both this tricks, and still no luck! Luckily the
11.8 from website works. But I guess this may be card-specific, so this
is rather unrelated to this bug, which seemed to originate from Unity.

This may be related to #818630, as symptoms are similar, but on these

[Bug 819144] [NEW] everything is black and blinks when using unity

2011-08-01 Thread Rafal Cieslak
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu Oneric. Recent updates (where recent means the last
two weeks, I can't say when exactly it happened) broke my desktop
completely.

Every part of the screen, I mean every button, label, checkboxes and other
interface widgets, the panel, launcher, desktop itselt, window title panels,
and probably even more elements turned into black rectangles. In some cases
it's a flashing rectangle (launcher is simply black, but the wallpaper behind
it flashes when I touch it with my mouse). In case of window titles this is
just a black rectangle instead of window decoration. In case of buttons labels
etc. they display OK, until I move the mouse over them, then they turn into
this black rectangle, and get back to normal when I move the window (sometimes
some parts of the window randomly switch back to normal, just as if the window
was partially redrawn). In firefox, behavior is similar, but everything gets
black when I scroll the page, and returns to normal when I switch the tab. In
terminal, all characters I type are black rectangles and are not seen at all,
but it gets redrawn properly when I move the window. The unity panel is not
displayed at all (black).
I cannot see the desktop itself, it's whole black, unless I open an indicator's
menu, when I can see both the full walpaper and the icons.

I tried both fglrx from the repos and from ati driver download site, the
result is same.

Unity2D works okay, and that's what I use temporarily, but I never had
problems with unity3D. Note this apport-bug report I collected when
using the broken unity3D, hope that will be more useful.

[Bug 819144] Re: [fglrx] everything is black and blinks when using unity

2011-08-01 Thread Rafal Cieslak
I cannot. When I press PrintScreen everything gets redrawn and the
screenshot looks as if nothing was wrong, expect for the panel and
launcher, which are simply not visible at all (wallpaper is displayed
instead).

I have, however, made some photos with my camera - hope this will be
useful.

I have also noticed, that the screen is ALL black (except for the mouse
pointer), if I have no applications opened. When I open one, I can see
it and whole desktop, also, when I open a menu, for example by clicking
where indicator should be seen, I can also see the whole wallpaper
icons, but they disappear when I close it.

[Bug 819443] [NEW] X fails to start properly when using the open source radeon/ati driver

2011-08-01 Thread Rafal Cieslak
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu Oneric. Everything used to be fine, but recent updates
(up to two and a half of week ago) broke my X. It works okay when I use
the FGLRX driver, but when I uninstall it, it does not start properly.
Instead of getting to the login screen, I see a black screen, with an
X-shaped mouse pointer, and nothing else.

I've sent the apport report, how else can I help?

It seems the problem is with the cube plugin, and not the unity itself
(which conflicts with the cube by default), so the bug should be linked
to compiz instead.

[Bug 807306] Re: [oneiric] Keyboard mouse not working in X

2011-07-11 Thread Rafal Cieslak
Great thanks for workaround in #27, worked for me. I was particularly
desperate, for I am testing Ubuntu on a laptop, and here I cannot re-
plug keyboard (however, pressing alt+sysrq+R and then alt+ctrl+f1 got me
to tty, from where I was able to installlaunch links2 to get to this
bug report), which makes this bug very significant.

It happened to me right after I have updated libudev and libgudev from
171-0ubuntu4 to 172-0ubuntu1 and rebooted my system.

I can also confirm the sound issue is related to this bug: my sound
stopped working (pulseaudio was relentlessly restarting), but when I got
everything back to work the sound is okay too.

[Bug 808412] [NEW] libindicator3-dev depends on libindicator-dev

2011-07-10 Thread Rafal Cieslak
Public bug reported:

Package libindicator3-dev (from ubuntu ONERIC repository) depends on
libindicator-dev, which is probably wrong.

I think so because libindicator-dev depends on libindicator6, and this
one conflicts with libindicator3, needed by libindicator3-dev. This
makes libindicator3-dev uninstallable... (Could anyone please verify
whether I am correct?)

The version of package libindicator3-dev affected by this bug is
0.3.90-0ubuntu1.

[Bug 647598] [NEW] Network indicator applet shows no connetions (No network devices available), while there are working conections

2010-09-25 Thread rafal cieslak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-network

Network indicator on my laptop shows no connections, although both
wireless and wired connections are active and working. The icon shows
red ! sign, and the menu shows no connections and message No network
devices available (while I can use the Internet without any trouble).
I'm using maverick. I attach debug info from apport-bug. Also, I think a
there may be important clues in the messages nm-applet writes to
standard output when I run it from command-line, so I paste it below.

[Bug 642839] [NEW] Evolution adds 'Sent from Ubuntu' signature by default

2010-09-19 Thread rafal cieslak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Well, it definitely shouldn't add this signature by default. A large
number of users is against having such unprofessionally looking, rude,
obnoxious and useless signature enabled by default. Let the user choose
whether he wants to boast about their OS. The signature should be added
only if the user approves that, since a lot of people have many
different reasons not to include this signature.

[Bug 620566] [NEW] Gtk::Scale.set_draw_value(0) resets the scale's step

2010-08-19 Thread rafal cieslak
Public bug reported:

Calling set_draw_value(0) when a scale has a step set (either in a
constructor, or using a set_digits() method) resets the step.

Steps to reproduce:

Create, lets say, a HScale and set it's step to one.
Then hide it's value.
Gtk::HScale* scale = new Gtk::HScale(0,5,1);
scale-set_draw_value(0);

Or, alternatively
Gtk::HScale* scale = new Gtk::HScale;
scale-set_digits(0);
scale-set_draw_value(0);

What is expected:
A horizontal scale, without it's value drawn, which user can set only to
integer numbers (since the step is 1).

What happens instead:
A scale in fact doesn't have it's value drawn, but the user can move it
smoothly, continuously, the step is surely much smaller than 1.

[Bug 619392] [NEW] playback stops for a very short periods of time when playing ogg files

2010-08-17 Thread rafal cieslak
Public bug reported:

When I playback an ogg file in Rhythmbox, sometimes the playback stops for
about 100-300 ms. It is actually audible and very annoying. It happens in FIXED
places, in all ogg files I have (I mean: for exapmple in file a.ogg it always
happens at 00:04 and 00:07, but in file b.ogg at 00:06 and 00:09 sec), but the
time between those short pauses is different everywhere and varies from about
2.5 sec to about 4 sec (and it is very annoying because of this high
frequency). However, in some parts of most tracks the pauses does not happen at
all, even for some longer time (or I cannot hear them). This is present in
rhythmbox only, the same file played, for example, through mplayer, sounds
perfect. I checked several audio formats for the same bug, but it seems it is
present only when playing ogg files.
I report this bug against gstreamer, because as far as I know it is responsible
for audio playback in rhythmbox, but if I'm wrong, please correct me.

[Bug 619430] [NEW] sound is muted when starting the system

2010-08-17 Thread rafal cieslak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-sound

When I boot-up by ubuntu (I am on maverick now), sound is muted by
default. This is quite annoying, since the first thing I do every time
when my computer is ready to work is un-muting, and turning the volume
up, as it is at minimum at default. I wonder if it is intentional, in my
opinion it should remember the state from before I turned my pc off. I
think this is also why I can't hear login-sound: it's muted.

[Bug 494699] Re: Does not support current Lucid kernel (2.6.32) or xserver (1.7)

2010-04-13 Thread rafal cieslak
Butt, thanks for sharing your opinion. Well, I've thought of preparing a guide
on how to deal with Ati card on Linux. However, I found out that the only step
I can recommend is just to use Ubuntu 10.04 (or at least when it will become
stable).
When I was saying about open-source drivers, I meant 'radeon' and 'radeonhd',
which, as far as I know (and that's somehow not surprising at all) are on
Ubuntu CD, and in fact everything works out of the box. If someone isn't
satisfied with those drivers, he can get the proprietary drivers easily, by the
time of release of Ubuntu 10.04 they will be working very well, as it was with
almost every previous Ubuntu release.

I do share Tim's hope, that open-source drivers will get as good as it is
possible. I am also avoiding any form of closed software, and I really like the
fact ATI shares with hardware specs.
I must agree part of users DO have trouble with those cards, but in my opinion
there is nobody to blame - Ati supports open-source drivers, and they do try
making their drivers as good as they can, open-source drivers' developers are
doing their best; I think everything is on a very good way to improve this -
not really satisfying - situation.

By the way, I am really surprised I am one among the very few who do not
complain about open-source drivers, I think you may just have a fake impression
of everyone complaining, for only the ones who have some trouble with them
write about it in the net. In fact I know a lot of users who doesn't have any
problems with open-source drivers.
And, in fact, as they are working well, Ubuntu developers DID put them in the
operating system (which DID solve the problem, at least in my case) (if you
don't mean some other open-source drivers, I have X's 'radeon' on my mind :)
[they are open-source, aren't they?] ).

[Bug 494699] Re: Does not support current Lucid kernel (2.6.32) or xserver (1.7)

2010-04-12 Thread rafal cieslak
Really? I have been using Ati cards since I remember and I have never had any
serious trouble with it.
Yes, AMD is to be blamed for the damned fglrx, but, seriously, I, personally,
do not complain. For some time I used fglrx, then I moved to open-source
drivers (due to this bug) and I found out they are working perfectly... I used
to have some trouble with them, because of some tiny bugs, but I can get great
performance and everything I could wish...
I do agree some people may be disappointed by poor support for their cards in
Ubuntu, but you can't say everyone with Ati card will have lots of trouble...
If you are conscious enough, you can avoid any trouble and gain full support.
Maybe not for the lastest and hottest cards, but as in my case, it IS possible
even to play the newest games.
In my opinion the open-source drivers are not as bad as many people claim, and
also fglrx is not as trouble-causing as it looks like. I think people are
over-complaining about Ati cards, as from my experience, and from what I know
from the Internet, they just have a terrible stereotype, while the truth is
that they are usable (but getting them to work sometimes requires some work).

SolidSlash: On my Dell 17' notify-osd has never shown this bar. I know
it should appear when I change brightness, but on Jaunty+fglrx,
Karmic+radeon, Karmic+fglrx, Lucid+radeon and now on Lucid+fglrx I have
never seen the progress bar, although the brightness changes. This is
why I think this is not a fglrx-related bug.

Well, it seems the issue of booting to tty1 instead of tty7 is a plymouth bug,
so it's not important here.
But, anyway, adding radeon.modeset=0 allows me to get hardware acceleration.

2010-03-14 Thread rafal cieslak
Well, removing vesa= option didn't change anything, I saw no difference.
However, adding radeon.modeset=0 gave a good result. My system booted to
console login, but after switching to tty7 I saw well-working X with hardware
acceleration, and I was able to run compiz, and any other 3d-applications.
Should I just add radeon.modeset=0 to my menu.lst, or is it just a temporary
workaround?

[Bug 534682] [NEW] [IDT 92HD73C1X5] Surround sound lost after few updates in Lucid Lynx

2010-03-08 Thread rafal cieslak
Public bug reported:

When I had Karmic Koala installed on my laptop, surround sound worked
perfectly. Then, I updated to Lucid Lynx. At first I experienced no
trouble concerning surround sound, but after few updates I lost surround
- now I have only stereo output, and no signal at surround outlets. I
wonder what might have gone wrong, I included some debugging info
collected by apport, if there is any other way I can help diagnosing
this bug, please inform me.

A strange symptom I observed: In gnome-volume-control, in output tab, I
have two sliders: one for panning right-left, and second for front-rear.
The first one works correctly, while the second one not: as I am sliding
it, master volume goes down, quickly but gradually (to zero), and the
slider I moved gets back to center (starting position). I don't know if
it is meaningful information, but I hope it will help.

I have no idea what to think about it, I will help you diagnosing as
much as I can, and I hope this problem will be fixed soon.

[Bug 492841] Re: open()ing files takes a long time with low throughput

2010-02-23 Thread rafal cieslak
I have the same issue. As you can see on my bootchart it's exacly the
same.

By the way (I don't think it's a bug in ureadahead), may I ask why does
ureadahead takes only 50% of 'disk utilisation'? Would it be any faster
if it would use it 100%?

[Bug 496225] Re: Jockey cannot install fglrx driver

2010-01-17 Thread rafal cieslak
It seems the newest fglrx does not support (yet) the newest xorg (7.6).
We must hope ATI will fix it soon... Or use free drivers, like radeon or
radeonhd.

[Bug 504219] Re: Cannot connect to plymouth

2010-01-16 Thread rafal cieslak
Warning on boot about plymouth and fsck .

fsck can take lots of time, depending on your drive speed and partition
size. Maybe you just had to wait for it to finish?

[Bug 496225] Re: Jockey cannot install fglrx driver

2009-12-23 Thread rafal cieslak
I confirm. I get the same bug installing the fglrx driver. I think the
important part of the log is:

2009-12-23 16:26:39,617 WARNING: modinfo for module fglrx failed: ERROR:
modinfo: could not find module fglrx

2009-12-23 16:26:39,617 WARNING: /sys/module/fglrx/drivers does not exist,
cannot rebind fglrx driver
2009-12-23 16:26:39,617 ERROR: XorgDriverHandler.enable(): package or module
not installed, aborting

I also have all fglrx-related packages installed.
Flgrx used to work on 9.10, but after upgrading to lucid I had to switch to
radeonhd.

I doubt whether there will be any use of my other log files, but if you
want, I can upload them.

[Bug 496225] Re: Jockey cannot install fglrx driver

2009-12-23 Thread rafal cieslak
Oh, and jockey-backend log says a bit more. That is everything
concerning fglrx:

Well, it actually is the same, but with more debug output, which may be somehow
important.

[Bug 307851] [NEW] Update manager shows invalid value in last updated field if failed to get package list

2008-12-14 Thread rafal cieslak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I know the title doesn't explain this bug clearly, I'll give an example:

I start update-manager to update my system.
It says: System was last updated three days ago. (or somewhat like this, I use
Polish translation)
I click Check for updates.
Some strange errors appear (it really doesn't matter what errors) and it fails
to get information about available updates.
Now it says: System was last updated less than hour ago
What??? It was last updated three days ago, as it failed to check for updates...

I use Ubuntu 8.10, update-manager in version 1:0.93.34.
