2018-02-20 Thread RK
Public bug reported:

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal.

Even though internet connection is fine, it is saying failed to connect
net; check your internet connection. etc.

[Bug 1514357] Re: Opening new windows or menus (e.g. "File") in programs, switching workspaces becomes slower and slower over time in Gnome

2017-07-24 Thread RK
For now, an easy workaround is to restart the shell (alt+F2, typing
"r"), which fixes the problem for a while.

When e.g. opening kupfer, the dash, a drop down menu in a program, the
gnome-shell process uses 100% CPU and the system stalls for a number of
seconds.

[Bug 1514357] [NEW] Opening new windows or menus (e.g. "File") in programs, switching workspaces becomes slower and slower over time in Gnome

2015-11-09 Thread RK
Public bug reported:

During normal use, opening new windows, opening dropdown menus (e.g.
"File", "View" in any program) becomes increasingly slow in Gnome. After
reboot, all such events occur almost instantaneously, but during normal
use over several hours (including suspending the laptop by closing the
lid) such events become increasingly slow. After several hours of use,
opening a dropdown menu might require several seconds of waiting, during
which the UI is completely unresponsive and does not update. Every time
an event is called, the syslog (/var/log/syslog) gets filled with
messages like:

[Bug 1512640] [NEW] UX32VD: Touchpad does not turn off when using keyboard fn-key combination, although indicator is shown

2015-11-03 Thread RK
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 15.04 to ubuntu 15.10, I have noticed that
using the laptop hotkey (I am using an Asus UX32VD ultrabook, and the
hotkey combination is fn-F9) to turn off the touchpad does not work.

The indicator, a touchpad image with an X in the corner, does show up,
and the indicator cycles correctly. However, this does not actually turn
off the touchpad.

However, going into the Gnome settings ("Mouse & and Touchpad") and
clicking the Touchpad to off does actually turn off the touchpad.
Interestingly, if pressing the hotkey combination when having this
window visible shows the "Off/On" key switching properly also in the
window, but again, the touchpad still works when the indicator is in the
Off position.

[Bug 1392016] Re: [Asus UL30VT] Backlight control does not work

2014-12-25 Thread RK
Hi Christopher,
thanks for your continued help.

The command
echo 8 /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
does set the brightness to a very low value (basically completely black). This
was done with the acpi_backlight=vendor kernel parameter in use.

Rebooting with just kernel parameter
video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0 does not change anything (indicator
bubble pops up, backlight level doesn't actually change).

Rebooting with just kernel parameter video.use_native_backlight=1
does not change anything (indicator bubble pops up, backlight level
doesn't actually change).

This did work: Creating a new file in
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/80-backlight.conf and pasting into it the following
code:

Section Device
Identifier Intel Graphics
Driver intel
Option AccelMethod sna
Option Backlight intel_backlight # use your backlight that
works here
BusID PCI:0:2:0
EndSection

The backlight control now works properly (indicator bubble and proper backlight
change). Furthermore, it is now possible to turn off the touchpad by using the
function key (the indicator bubble does show up).

[Bug 1392016] Re: [Asus UL30VT] Backlight control does not work

2014-12-24 Thread RK
I have now tested the very latest kernel, version 3.19 rc 1 (from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.19-rc1-vivid/), and
backlight control still does not work.

The indicator does pop up and indicates increase and decrease in the
correct way, but the actual backlight level on the laptop screen does
not change.

Furthermore, the function key to turn off the touchpad does not work,
and doesn't even show an indicator bubble.

[Bug 1392016] Re: [Asus UL30VT] Backlight control does not work

2014-11-29 Thread RK
Hi,
I have now gone back and tested kernels back to 2.6.32, the kernel that was
used in Ubuntu when this laptop was released. It seems I remembered
incorrectly, backlight control has never worked properly on this laptop.

Backlight control did not work on any of the kernels I tested. I tested
the following kernels:

- 2.6.32-69-generic
- 2.6.38-02063808-generic
- 3.0.1-030001-generic
- 3.11.0-12-generic
- 3.11.0-26-generic
- 3.13.0-32-generic
- 3.13.0-34-generic
- 3.13.0-37-generic
- 3.13.0-37-generic
- 3.18.0-031800rc4-generic

It is possible that the problem is the same as for the UL-80VT:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66501

[Bug 1392016] Re: [Asus UL30VT] Backlight control does not work

2014-11-13 Thread RK
Hi,
I've tested the new 3.18 kernel
($ uname -a
Linux lina-UL30VT 3.18.0-031800rc4-generic #201411091835 SMP Sun Nov 9 23:36:36
UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux)

However, the bug persists. Backlight control does not work.

Furthermore, the touchpad control cannot be turned off with the hotkey,
nor does the indicator bubble pop up (I understand that this perhaps
should be reported as a separate bug)

Still, the indicator bubble for backlight control does pop up, but has
no effect on actual backlight.

[Bug 1391758] Re: [Asus UX32VD] Backlight controls have no effect after suspend in most recent kernel

2014-11-13 Thread RK
Hi,

After updating the BIOS, the backlight control works once more. In fact,
I can now also turn off the backlight completely with the same controls,
which was not possible before. Furthermore, the backlight control is
more fine-grained than before.

It seems that the problem is fixed.

Thanks.

[Bug 1391758] [NEW] [Asus UX32VD] Backlight controls have no effect after suspend in most recent kernel

2014-11-11 Thread RK
Public bug reported:

After recent updates, the backlight doesn't work after suspend on my
Asus UX32VD laptop. The hotkeys work as far as the Unity graphical
indicator goes, but there is no change in backlight. The hotkeys used to
work, and have worked for the last couple of years.

Backlight is restored and does work after restarting, but can no longer
be modified after suspend.

This is the output from
ls /sys/class/backlight backlight
acpi_video0
acpi_video1
intel_backlight

This is the output from
grep -r . /proc/acpi acpi

[Bug 1176007] [NEW] kupfer crashes with segmentation fault

2013-05-03 Thread RK
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Precise to Raring (13.04), kupfer only works for a
couple of seconds at a time. I can still start applications during these
first seconds, as well as starting (bringing it into view) kupfer with
the keyboard shortcut, but after a certain time it seg faults. I am
running kupfer version 0+v208-2. I am running XFCE v. 4.10.0-4ubuntu1.

I ran kupfer with the debug option (kupfer --debug), and got a few
different types of errors (after repeated runs). The error was not the
same every time, but mostly it was just Segmentation fault (core
dumped).

Another error that occurred once (out of maybe 10 tests) was

...

[Bug 815996] Re: Desktop occasionally freezes/locks up when switching workspaces

2012-05-22 Thread RK
Yesterday I used Unity in 12.04 a whole working day (about 8 hours)
without getting the freeze on desktop switches or exposé-switches.
However, since I switched from XFCE, I think the desktop was still
managed by XFCE, since there was no desktop background on my Unity
desktop. My feeling is that that shouldn't matter for whether or not the
present bug happens.

Compiz was managing the desktop, and all the usual functions worked. The
transitions between workspaces were always snappy, and as said, I got no
freezes or crashes. My computer is still a bit too weak to really handle
Unity though, so I'm back with XFCE from now on.

[Bug 815996] Re: Desktop occasionally freezes/locks up when switching workspaces

2012-05-14 Thread RK
I have switched to XFCE to get rid of the crashes that I experienced in
both Unity and Gnome 3, and the freeze in Unity. However, I logged in to
unity just now, and tried to switch workspaces several times. No freeze,
and much snappier than before.

However, I think my test was too short to actually be sure that the bug
has been fixed. It usually was possible to work for at least an hour
before the freeze happened.

[Bug 880768] Re: The whole window manager sometimes freezes when switching workspaces or when opening the workspace switcher

2012-01-19 Thread RK
I am wondering if this error could be related to this one:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/905343
The problem seems to be somewhat similar, perhaps related to the graphics
driver for Intel GMA on-board graphics?

[Bug 905343] Re: Compiz crashes in Gnome-Fallback mode after switching workspaces

2012-01-19 Thread RK
** Description changed:

I have had compiz (which I am running with compiz --replace as a
command after login to my Gnome 3 fallback session) crash on me a couple
of times. It usually happens after switching workspace with
  ctrl+alt+arrow_key. The syslog says:

  Dec 16 15:12:59 rasmus-OptiPlex-GX620 gnome-session[1460]: WARNING: App
'compiz.desktop' respawning too quickly
  Dec 16 15:12:59 rasmus-OptiPlex-GX620 gnome-session[1460]: WARNING: Error on
restarting session managed app: Component 'compiz.desktop' crashing too quickly

+ The same thing can also happen saying that gnome-wm is crashing too
+ quickly.
+
After the crash, I can't switch workspace anymore and window decorations
and the gnome panel are missing. I can go into a tty prompt, kill all
gnome-panel and decorator-related processes in htop and then start
metacity with metacity --replace --display=:0 to get back to a usable
  desktop.
+
+ I am wondering if it is perhaps related to a similar crash when using
+ Unity, but that results in a completely noninteractive desktop:

[Bug 880768] Re: The whole window manager sometimes freezes when switching workspaces or when opening the workspace switcher

2012-01-06 Thread RK
Sorry for not replying in a while. I switched to Gnome 3 classic to
avoid this problem in unity, and because performance of unity on my
computer was a bit sluggish. I therefore have not had opportunity to see
if the problem still occurs. However, if Márton still sees it, chances
are I would too.

[Bug 878820] Re: Keyboard shortcut - The grid keybindings are behaving inconsistently

2012-01-06 Thread RK
I fully agree with #16, I think the old behavior makes the grid plugin
*very* useful when arranging several windows on the same workspace. Just
making everything occupy half the screen isn't as useful. I like to get
the Ubuntu really is much more useful than Windows 7 feeling.

For example, maybe I want Firefox to occupy 75% of the screen (so I can
use the Treestyle tab addon to put my tabs on the left side of the
window and still see the web page I'm on), and then keep a text editor
on the left side. With the old behavior, this just required a couple of
ctrl+alt+6 and ctrl+alt+4 to get it *just right*, whereas with the new
behavior I have to drag stuff around with the mouse and probably won't
get it *just right*. I like the old behavior. Why not have an option to
activate it in CCSM? Both easy for newcomers, and easy to activate for
people that want it.

[Bug 909672] [NEW] The size of the usb-creator-gtk window is just small enough too prevent the areas that show the iso image and usb stick from being visible

2011-12-29 Thread RK
Public bug reported:

The USB image creator interface, when using Swedish language, opens up
to a size that makes the parts that allow you to choose the ISO file and
USB stick collapsed. Changing the size of the window shows the iso files
and usb sticks properly.

So after starting the application, you immediately have to resize the
window. A very small, but a bit jarring, problem.

See the attached picture for a better idea about the problem.

[Bug 905343] [NEW] Compiz crashes in Gnome-Fallback mode after switching workspaces

[Bug 902074] [NEW] Growl-like indicator bubble clips outside the workspace area when it is first shown after logging in

[Bug 880775] Re: After switching back to a workspace, the therein previously active application is sometimes not visible

2011-10-25 Thread RK
This can sometimes reproduce the problem (it at least shows a related
one, that application windows sometimes move to other workspaces when
you switch workspaces)

1. Have an application (Firefox, for example) open full screen in one workspace
(for example the lower right corner one)
2. Use the workspace switcher to switch to the workspace to the left (lower
left corner one)
3. The firefox window is now visible in the left lower workspace too, but is
not interactive there.
4. Switch back to the lower right corner workspace by using CTLR+ALT+rightarrow
or the workspace switcher.

The active application is now (sometimes) not visible in the original
workspace, or is noninteractive. I am not exactly sure how it is
reproduced perfectly, but will see if I can add more information when I
see the problem again.

[Bug 880768] [NEW] The whole window manger sometimes freezes when switching workspaces or when opening the workspace switcher

2011-10-24 Thread RK
Public bug reported:

After starting to use Oneiric, I have noticed that the window manager
system freezes from time to time when switching workspaces or when
opening the workspace switcher. The window almost switches to the other
workspace, before the whole screen freezes. I can't exactly replicate
the exact time when this happens. It has also happened when opening the
workspace switcher, and (I think) when using the circle application
switcher from the Compiz plugin. I can still move the mouse and hear
sound from the speakers, but I can't interact with anything on screen. I
can still access the tty terminals with ctrl+alt+F2 (for example), and
kill the X process (/usr/run/X :0 ... a relatively long string with
auth, something/lightdm/something and so on) to go back to the login
screen.

It looks like the animation or drawing of the windows stops too early,
and the desktop is then noninteractive. It might happen more frequently
when the system has a high CPU load. I did not notice these problems
when using Natty and Gnome2.

[Bug 880775] [NEW] After switching back to a workspace, the therein previously active application is sometimes not visible

2011-10-24 Thread RK
Public bug reported:

Sometimes when switching back to a workspace which contains an
application that was in focus previously, the application is not
visible. For example, sometimes when using Firefox in one workspace, and
then switching from this workspace and back, the firefox application
will not be visible. Either applications that are also running in the
same workspace are visible or just the wallpaper. The application is
still running. It is necessary to select the application from the left-
hand application bar/launcher to make it visible again. I can also add
that the application is still visible in the indicator that is opened
when I switch workspaces with CTRL+ALT+arrow keys.

[Bug 880776] [NEW] The right click menu closes as soon as it is touched

2011-10-24 Thread RK
Public bug reported:

Sometimes when the right click menu is opened, the menu is closed as
soon as it is touched. This has happened in Firefox and in Thunderbird,
and possible also in other applications. The menu starts working again
if another application (for example, if I focus Firefox and click in the
window, and then switch back to Thunderbird and try opening the right
click menu again) is focused. The menu opens correctly when I use the
right mouse button, but as soon as I try to select anything, it closes
immediately.

[Bug 878791] [NEW] The Compiz grid plugin does not correctly resize windows for certain keyboard shortcuts

2011-10-20 Thread RK
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 and starting to use Unity, I have
noticed that some of the commands from the Compiz Grid plugin do not
work like they used to. For example, with CTRL+ALT+KP4 and CTRL+ALT+KP6,
it used to be possible to resize window first to cover half the screen,
then 25% of the screen, and then 25/2% of the screen. Now, the window
only covers half the screen, no matter how many times the shortcuts are
pressed.

I prefer the old functionality, since it let me easily adjust window
sizes to see multiple application windows at once. Additionally,
CTRL+ALT+KP9 places the window in the top center part of the screen,
instead of the top right part. All these regressions disrupt my work
flow and reduce the usefulness of the Grid plugin.

Also see the following askubuntu discussion:

stopped-working-correctly-now-ctrl-alt-num-4-an

[Bug 878029] [NEW] Application menu loses focus while holding ALT

2011-10-19 Thread RK
Public bug reported:

When using the new application menu, that in Unity is located in the top
unity bar, the LyX document processor menu loses focus after ALT is
held down for less than a second.

For example, if pressing (and holding) ALT, pressing F (to open the file
menu) the opened file menu loses focus quickly. Other keyboard
shortcuts (to, for example, open a new file using O) then don't work
if the mouse pointer isn't moved over to the application menu. This is a
small problem, but it is still disruptive to my work flow. As far as I
can remember, I did not have the same problem in LyX on Gnome 2 or in
LyX on Windows.

[Bug 364699] Re: [PATCH] IR doesn`t work (lirc_igorplugusb)

2011-05-03 Thread RK
All previously mentioned patches are in the lirc version shipped with
maverick.

However, in maverick, lirc_igorplugusb still does not work with remotes
causing a buffer overflow. The reason is that the ring buffer of the
driver is too small, causing events to get lost. (In my case, it
sufficed reproducibly for 13 out of 16 bits of actual information,
meaning 15 out of 18 pulses.) As that is no integer factor, it seems
some timing changed that now causes the buffer to be full (and writing
failing), while it didn't before. Anyway, the buffer needs to be 36
(DEVICE_BUFLEN) codes (=18 pulses) plus one pulse for the gap since the
last signal, instead of the same in bytes. Increasing the buffer fixes
it.

[Bug 682128] Re: Webcam fails to initialize 25% and flickers 75% of remaining times

2011-01-30 Thread Rk-katana-steel
I don't have the flickering, although the video freezes up while using Skype
after a few minutes.
and I see 5 new messages each time from the kernel log:
5x [time index] uvcvideo: Failed to resubmit video URB (-27).

this only affects the maverick kernels (2.6.35+) maybe a little earlier
as the lucid kernel (2.6.32), which I've reverted back to for a while doesn't
have this issue
from what I can tell.

(my workaround for reverting is simply move the 2.6.35 kernel out of /boot then
run update-grub
thus it only detects my younger 2.6.32 kernel, and then reboot)

[Bug 705178] [NEW] pam_namespaces and --make-shared vs mountall

2011-01-19 Thread RK
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mountall

I'm using pam_namespaces in my PAM configuration (mainly to have /tmp and
/var/tmp mapped into my encrypted $HOME, so that private temp files do not end
up on the not yet encrypted root partition). However, having different
namespaces means that udisks will run in a different namespace than my user, so
it will mount removable drives (like DVD) in the other namespace than mine -
resulting in e.g. the file manager being unable to open the newly mounted (but
yet unreachable) directory. To solve this, I created another /media mount point
on /tmp and was planning to call mount --make-shared on it, to make these
mounts show through. Googling a little, I found that
none /media tmpfs defaults,noexec,nodev,auto 0 0
none /media none make-shared 0 0
should solve my issue - which mount -a confirms to be correct. However,
mountall has two issues: it will ignore all lines except the last for the same
mount point, and it will do nothing with fstype = none, since such a file
system is indeed unknown - it does not understand the special syntax.

The disc in question is an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD. The reason is that the
smartmontools treat the new SandForce based OCZ discs the same as the
old Indilinx based discs, but the SandForce ones use a different variant
of the attributes.

Please update smartmontools or at least the drivedb.h file to a newer
version. Here's the relevant upstream change:

[Bug 364699] Re: [PATCH] IR doesn`t work (lirc_igorplugusb)

2010-04-20 Thread RK
Hi guys, can we please re-close the bug? There's nothing anymore on the
software side that can be fixed. The Igorplug has a ring buffer of
limited length. If your remote control sends sequences that are longer
than that (e.g. like my Onkyo RC 242S), then the buffer overrun is bound
to happen each time the remote sends a button press. My proposed patch
thus removed the error message (because it doesn't provide any further
help), but the author of lirc decided to leave it in. My proposed patch
also removed the message if the device said dude actually on second
thought I don't have data for you (the GET_INFRACODE: error 0
message). The author accepted that on second try (that's what's in
r1.35). So the original fix for this bug only made sure as much
information as available would be returned, just as in the w32 driver
(it previously returned only the part that was neither overwritten nor
overwrote something, the part that overwrote something was missing).

tl;dr: the driver is as good as it gets except for useless messages.

If the recording tool doesn't work for you, then you still can use mode2
to get the pattern for each key press and then manually derive an
lircd.conf file from it.

... then, (re-) install the package that Thomas C helpfully created to

[Bug 529514] Re: lirc 0.8.6 and linux kernel 2.6.33

After googling, I found the patch that was applied to mainline 2.6.33.
Unfortunately, the mainline kernels currently built do not include lirc.
As such, here's the patch applied to lirc 0.8.6. The changes might be
needed to be conditionalized on kernel = 2.6.33. They compile and will
make it work according to a cursory glance at it.

[Bug 523610] Re: rsyslogd spins CPU on some kernels

2010-02-23 Thread RK
Same here on 2.6.33-020633rc8-generic; downgrading to 4.2.0-2ubuntu5
fixes it. I'd say 2.6.33 isn't an older kernel...

[Bug 505494] Re: Mouse events fail frequently and unpredictably, requiring kwin restart

2010-02-15 Thread RK
I have this bug as well, since upgrading to lucid, using ATI (no more
nvidia, yay), kernel 2.6.33, kde 4.4. However, for me, restartin kwin
does not help at all - only restarting X.

[Bug 522407] [NEW] Radeon KMS: frequent 1 second black screen

2010-02-15 Thread RK
Public bug reported:

Using linux 2.6.32 radeon KMS, I have frequently outages, showing a blank
screen for like one second. It keeps
coming back, without any log file entry, as if nothing had happened. Installing
the linux 2.6.33 mainline
package (plus missing firmware file) fixes this issue completely.

[Bug 500077] Re: there is no support for k10-thermal-sensors in kernel 2.6.32

2010-02-15 Thread RK
Are you asking for this support to be patched in to 2.6.32 from 2.6.33
for Lucid?

I'm not paulle, but yes, he is. 2.6.33 contains k10temp, 2.6.32 does
not, so no thermal control for popular CPUs. The driver is pretty small,
adding it will not affect anything else.

[Bug 453511] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in _nv001754X()

2010-02-15 Thread RK
Note:
a) I fried my CPU (going from no visible issue to hard crashes sometimes even
during POST in a week); this may or may not be related.
b) I don't have an nvidia card anymore.
So I won't mind if it is closed as wontfix.

[Bug 475530] Re: KIMPanel is unusable in Kubuntu 9.10

2010-02-13 Thread RK

It seems that Lucid Alpha2 did not fix this bug, and I cannot make it work
even I copy what Chen had done.

Note that the panel.py script is installed as /usr/lib/ibus/ibus-ui-kde,
so you have to adapt the path. It /kinda/ works with that. Kinda means:
if you add the panel widgets, you will have two popups that you can move
around, or you will have the whole shebang in the panel plus one popup.
The config button does nothing at all, not does any config entries
show up in systemsettings. The spam icon can be hidden using the Icon
Filter menu. When no IM is activated, a broken images is shown.

And now I tried around with using -p /bin/echo - a plasma crash later
and now I can't select anything at all anymore (unless using the gtk
ui). Somehow it cannot reliable communicate. Wierd.

[Bug 475530] Re: KIMPanel is unusable in Kubuntu 9.10

2010-02-13 Thread RK
I can do:
* log in to KDE
* click away any annoying KDE popup
* open a konsole
* run: ibus-daemon -x -r -d -p /usr/lib/ibus/ibus-ui-kde

* press ctrl-space and it either works, or the konsole hangs; in the latter
case, close the konsole and open a new one

Using these packages:

ii ibus1.2.0.20091215-1
New input method framework using dbus
ii ibus-anthy 1.2.0.20100115-1

ii ibus-gtk1.2.0.20091215-1
New input method framework using dbus
ii ibus-m17n 1.2.0.20091217-1
   m17n engine for IBus
ii ibus-qt41.2.0.20091217-1
   qt-immodule for ibus (QT4)
ii plasma-widget-kimpanel 4:4.4.0-0ubuntu1
addons for KDE 4 Plasma - universal
input me
ii plasma-widget-kimpanel-backend-ibus 4:4.4.0-0ubuntu1
addons for KDE 4 Plasma - universal
input me
(the last two self-compiled from dpkg source as the mirror is not up to date
yet)

r...@rk:~ ll .xinput.d/de_DE
lrwxrwxrwx 1 rk rk 28 2010-02-13 22:45 .xinput.d/de_DE -
/etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/ibus

and in .bashrc:
export XIM_PROGRAM=
export XIM_ARGS=
export GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus
export xmodifie...@im=ibus
export QT_IM_MODULE=ibus

I have no idea why it works for me in this combination, why I once had
the the ui duplicated (once from ibus-ui-kde and once from the plasma
widget; maybe because I had it expanded from the panel at the time I
started the other), nor why I can't just use -p /bin/echo with it. Very
unreliable, this. In particular since it can easily lock up some or all
processes of the session when restarting or stopping the daemon.

Note: removing (or conditionalizing on kernel 32) the line 402
mentioned in the compile log will fix the compilation. No idea what
