[Bug 1575092] Re: Reinstall of Ubuntu 16.04 over failed upgrade of Ubuntu (15.10 -> 16.04) results in grub installation failure

2016-04-27 Thread Robert B
Thanks for this explanation. I re-installed 16.04 from scratch, erasing
the disk. Not without difficulties, though, as I got an error message
about not being able "to mount a file system with type vfat in SCSI1"
(fixed that by booting from USB into a live system and writing a new GPT
partition table before re-attempting installation onto the now empty
disk with empty partition table).

The new installation was done in UEFI mode.

A note about the warning message that you referred to, i.e.:

"This machine's firmware has started the installer in UEFI mode but it
looks like there may be existing operating systems already installed
using "BIOS compatibility mode". If you continue to install Debian in
UEFI mode, it might be difficult to reboot the machine into any BIOS-
mode operating systems later.

If you wish to install in UEFI mode and don't care about keeping the
ability to boot one of the existing systems, you have the option to
force that here. If you wish to keep the option to boot an existing
operating system, you should choose NOT to force UEFI installation
here."

On re-reading this message in light of what you explained it now makes
sense. At the moment, however, I didn't realise that "one of the
existing systems" actually included the one I was trying to repair
(which was the only system installed). Somehow I thought the message
referred to Windows or other systems.

The dialogue box then provides two options: "Go Back " and "Continue in
UEFI mode".

What I was missing to see was an option to "Continue in BIOS mode". Am I
right in guessing that that needs to be selected in the BIOS before
rebooting the machine?

[Bug 1575092] [NEW] Reinstall of Ubuntu 16.04 over failed upgrade of Ubuntu (15.10 -> 16.04) results in grub installation failure

2016-04-26 Thread Robert B
Public bug reported:

I had a working Ubuntu 15.10 installation (which itself was an upgrade
from an earlier release). Got prompted if I wanted to upgrade to 16.04
and answered yes. During the upgrade several dozen packages failed to
install, many of them libraries. I was eventually left with a system
that would not work so I decided to reinstall the OS, keeping existing
user files intact (booting from USB). The install proceeded without
problems but at the end I got the error message "The 'grub-efi-
amd64-signed' package failed to install into / target/." Now I'm left
with a computer without any working OS.

[Bug 792085] Re: Automatic remount of safely removed drive

2015-03-01 Thread Robert B
This bug affects me too, on 14.04 (kernel 3.13.0-46).

However, the curious thing is that it only affects me with the new
Transcend StoreJet 25H3 external HDD (USB 3.0) that I got recently.
Before that I was using a Seagate external HDD (also USB 3.0) which I
was able to safely remove (either using Nautilus or from the command
line with udisks --detach). This seems to suggest that the drive itself
is responsible for this behaviour.

The Transcend drive has a hardware button which on Windows is supposed
to do a quick reconnect for a detached device, or a one-touch backup
when connected. On Linux this button seems not to have any effect, but
the fact that the drive can go from detached state back to attached
state by its own action could possibly be the reason we're seeing this
strange behaviour. Perhaps it's not a bug but a feature...

[Bug 1335877] [NEW] HTTP 403, Forbidden when trying to upload to Flickr

2014-06-30 Thread Robert B
Public bug reported:

Package: f-spot
Version: 0.8.2-5.1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

Authorization to Flickr was lost. Hitting the Authorize button to re-
authenticate when uploading to Flickr brings up HTTP 403, Forbidden.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?

I tried running with --debug.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

It prints a bunch of mono-related stuff.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

It doesn't display the URL it tries to access. (I suspect that the http
API address has changed in Flickr, but cannot be sure.)

[Bug 877279] Re: EOG - Image viewer hangs system when opening large image file

2012-02-12 Thread Robert B
I c an confirm this bug. Just tried to open a 1.6MB JPG image file using
eog. It shows Opening image ... and the beginning bit of the progress
bar and then freezes. My system monitor also freezes and the only thing
that still works is the mouse pointer, although it's slower than normal.
All window buttons, menus, desktop etc. are unresponsive to mouse
interaction. Keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, Ctrl-
Alt-Delete etc.) don't work.

This is not the first time this has happened to me. It has affected my
office PC (Dell Optiplex 755) as well as my home PC (Dell Inspiron 530),
both running Ubuntu 11.10 32bit, and already surfaced when I was still
using Ubuntu 11.04. It seems to affect eog only as gimp and shotwell
don't have this problem.

This is a critical bug as the only way to recover from it is to do a
hard reset, which could result in the loss of data.

[Bug 661889] [NEW] ekiga freezes when trying to accept a call

2010-10-16 Thread Robert B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

Ekiga freezes when trying to accept a call. The application turns gray
(in gnome) and sits there. A top doesn't reveal any cpu being used so
I don't know what's happening.

I haven't so far been able to make a call to a human being (only
sip:5...@ekiga.net).

I am attaching a gdb session output. Perhaps this will be useful.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.

[Bug 647524] [NEW] Xvnc doesn't detect idle mouse and keyboard

2010-09-25 Thread Robert B
Public bug reported:

First, I noticed that Pidgin wouldn't mark me as away after being away
from my computer. Then, I noticed Gnotime also wouldn't stop the clock
and xautolock wouldn't start the lock screen. So, after doing some
research, I discovered that the X windows server I'm running might be at
fault, namely, Xvnc a.k.a. Xtightvnc . The output of doing an xdpyinfo
is below.

There is no MIT-SCREEN-SAVER, which I think would be necessary for
idleness of the mouse and keyboard to be correctly acknowledged.

Don't know if anything can be done about this since it's dependent upon
a fork from XFree86.

2010-09-25 Thread Robert B
You may wanna look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-
server/+bug/546578/comments/124 . I have been so happy with
xscreensaver that I'm loathe to switch, but you may want to try it.

[Bug 643017] [NEW] radio and check box buttons in clearlooks on nVidia

2010-09-19 Thread Robert B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gtk2-engines

Radio and checkbox buttons on all clearlooks-related themes are rendered
rather horribly. The foreground color for checked seems to be almost
exactly the same color as the background. Only by hovering over and/or
focusing on the check or radio button can the state (checked or
unchecked) be seen (barely).

I suspect that this has something to do with a poor interaction with the
xserver display. This is on a Mac Mini using the nVidia display driver.
(The exactly same theme and font combination works perfectly on a non-
Apple laptop not using the nVidia driver.)

We seem to be forced to use a not-so-clear theme as an unsatisfactory
workaround.

[Bug 643017] Re: radio and check box buttons in clearlooks on nVidia

2010-09-19 Thread Robert B
I realized that the problem is that gtk-chtheme has to be sychronized
with gnome-appearance-properties . Without that, the results seem to be
undefined.

This is way too complex.

[Bug 521457] Re: firefox ignores ui.caretWidth setting

2010-09-16 Thread Robert B
This is completely bizarre. On my Ubuntu Firefox at home, ui.caretWidth
works perfectly. At work, my Ubuntu Firefox doesn't. They are both
running precisely the same version of Firefox.

There are 2 differences:
 1) At home, I'm running GNOME; at work, I'm running Fluxbox.
 2) At home, I'm running Lucid Lynx (10.04); at work, Karmic Koala (9.10).

Makes no sense.

(I am not running the 64 bit version -- only 32 bit version of Ubuntu.)

[Bug 590522] Re: cannot burn ISO images to CDs

2010-08-23 Thread Robert B
I suspect it may have something to do with Ubuntu device drivers w.r.t.
this particular laptop/DVD writer. (I have an Acer Aspire AS5750-5513
and it just lists the DVD writer as DVD Super Multi DL, which seems
pretty meaningless.)

I haven't tried burning under Windows 7, but I bet it would work.

My Debian desktop (a Dell) uses a standard EIDE ATAPI Sony CD/DVD
burner.

I've been running with xscreensaver for a while now and it works

So, it's definitely something to do with gnome-keyring or gnome-
screensaver.

[Bug 603629] Re: Firefox exits

2010-07-25 Thread Robert B
This problem seems to have gone away.

I did remove the BetterThanAds firefox addon (https://addons.mozilla.org
/en-US/firefox/addon/14638/ ). That may have been it. There were
various errors from the extension because it seems to be a 64-bit thing
whereas I only run 32-bit operating systems when possible.

[Bug 603629] Re: Firefox exits

2010-07-10 Thread Robert B
I don't think memory is the problem. Unless there is a cron job which
runs at night eating up memory. I suppose that's possible.

In any case, below is part of my top output, sorted by virtual memory.
There is plenty of memory.

I'll investigate whether a cron job is consuming and using up memory at
night.

[Bug 603629] [NEW] Firefox exits

2010-07-09 Thread Robert B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

Firefox exits randomly. It seems to be a poor interaction between X and
Firefox because, when I run firefox from the command line, I get this
output:

firefox: Fatal IO error 10 (No child processes) on X server :0.0.
 Fri Jul 9 01:15:39 PDT 2010

(Note that Firefox disappeared early in the morning.)

I am running Firefox on Mac Mini hardware using (I think) the NVidia
proprietary device driver for the display. If attaching X logs would
help, please tell me.

All other displayed programs seem to survive fine -- it's only Firefox
that goes away.

[Bug 601366] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2010-07-03 Thread Robert B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

So, my X session suddenly became stuck. I was moving around the mouse
cursor with the touchpad when it froze. I was using Firefox and about
to click on a tab.

I happened to have had an opportunity to log into this laptop from a
desktop (via ssh) and poke around. I first killed the gnome-session.
No go. Then, I tried killing X. It wouldn't die -- a ps revealed
D, as in it was waiting on a device (it wasn't clear which device). I
killed the parent gdm process, but X was still around and the screen
still frozen. Since killing X was impossible (and therefore CTL-ALT-F1
not an option), I did a sudo reboot to reboot the system.

I should note that I had logged off my session and logged on a few
times. I don't usually do this. I was hoping to get the touchpad wheel
scrolling to work better (it's too slow) in my VNC client, but logging
off and on didn't help.

(FWIW, I'm wondering if this is related to my previously reported
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-screensaver/+bug/587668
regarding blank screen freezes.)

2010-06-19 Thread Robert B
I have an Acer Aspire 5740-5513 laptop and the BIOS workaround doesn't
work for me. I don't get the VFS error in dmesg but I am still unable
to mount my backup (data only) iso9660-based DVD. In fact, when I
insert the DVD, it just makes a clicking noise and is completely
inaccessible.

CDs are readable, but I am unable to write CDs.

Cannot mount media in DVD rom drive, Acer Timeline 4810T. Drive is detected,
and media only detected if placed in the drive when machine suspended. Even
then DVD movies (purchased) are not recognised - error message that media is
unknown. Audio cd's sometimes play. When trying to unmount, I am asked for my
password - message given that another user mounted the media.

[Bug 590522] [NEW] cannot burn ISO images to CDs

2010-06-06 Thread Robert B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wodim

For some reason, Lucid Lynx correctly brought up a dialog when I
inserted a blank CD only the first time.

After that, it does not work. I'm using exactly the same brand of CD-Rs
bought at the same time and I've tried several.

The first time, I cancelled out of the suggestion to burn the CD.
Later, I right-clicked on a file and did Write to Disc It brought
up the dialog and chunked away for a while. But, then it got an
Unknown error has occurred and popped out the CD.

After this, the above described behavior seems to occur -- when I insert
a blank CD, a dialog does not appear and when I try to Write to
Disc..., it says Please replace the disc with a supported CD or DVD.

I also tried using wodim on the command line and it says:

[Bug 546578] Re: black screen after a few user switches

2010-05-30 Thread Robert B
This is still a problem for me with gnome-screensaver 2.30.0-0ubuntu2.
I have an Acer Aspire 5740-5513, which various websites say is an Intel
GMA video card.

My workaround is to essentially disable gnomesaver by sudo mv /usr/bin
/gnome-screensaver /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver.bak.

I hope whatever new version of gnome-screensaver comes out fixes this
problem.

[Bug 587668] [NEW] screen black/blank after typing password and breaking lock

2010-05-30 Thread Robert B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

$ lsb_release -rd

See
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/546578/comments/97
for more info.

To reproduce: randomly, after a number of times (I would guess once
every 10 or so times), typing in my password after the screen is locked
via gnome-screensaver, the screen remains black/blank with just the
mouse cursor there. Ctl-Alt-F1 does not change this, neither does Ctl-
Alt-Backspace nor Ctl-Alt-Del. As mentioned in the above referenced
comment, the only workaround is to disable gnome-screensaver.

Note that I am not in a position to log into my system while this
happens and therefore cannot run any diagnostics or tests.

The system is a Acer Aspire AS5740-5512 laptop. When closing the laptop
lid when this happens, the screen becomes completely black -- the mouse
cursor is gone.

The only way to recover is to hard reboot the system (hold down the
power button).

[Bug 532005] [NEW] gnome-power-manager doesn't show icon as non-root user

2010-03-04 Thread Robert B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The battery icon only seems to show if I do

$ sudo gnome-power-manager

That is, if gnome-power-manager is run as root, the battery icon in the
notification area in the taskbar shows. If I run as a normal user, it
doesn't.

I assume that there is some permission issue.

I did an strace and it looks like a normal user gets stuck at

 poll([{fd=5, events=POLLIN}, {fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=11,
events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=13, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=14,
events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=15, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=8,
events=POLLIN}, {fd=7, events=POLLIN}], 8, 9995 unfinished ...

whereas the root user gets past this and starts opening up files in
/usr/share/gnome-power-manager/icons . I tried looking at the various
associated files and sockets. Some are /tmp/orbit- and others are
dbus-related, but I can't tell which is the sticking point.

[Bug 527494] Re: [lucid regression] UPS icon appears/disappears; shows no data

2010-02-24 Thread Robert B
My icon never appears -- it looks just like a terminal icon and there
is no pulldown menu.

(My volume control icon has a similar problem in that it also has the
terminal icon.)

If I run gnome-power-manager as root, the icon appears, but the pulldown
still does not work. And the icon eventually disappears.

I did an strace on gnome-power-manager, but didn't see anything obvious
(I tried moving my .gtkrc-2.0 out of the way but it didn't help) that
could be causing the problem.

[Bug 176589] Re: compiz randomly freezes X

2009-02-03 Thread Robert B
The same problem also happens on my Dell Dimension 4700 with ATI Radeon
X300SE graphics card running Intrepid. Desktop freezes except for the
mouse pointer which can still be moved. Connecting through ssh to init 6
the machine still works. I've disabled desktop effects and am waiting to
see if the problem recurs. Would be nice to have the desktop effects
back though.

[Bug 289764] Re: Logitech MX5500 Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse loses connection after reboot.

2008-10-29 Thread Robert B
Same problem, keyboard and mouse lose connection with the USB Bluetooth adapter.
Unplugging and replugging the receiver works, but need to reconnect the mouse
and kybd.
kybd = logitech mx5000
mouse = logitech mx laser
USB receiver = Logitech part number 831406-1000

[Bug 30447] Re: Lockup problems with both the free xorg ATI driver and the proprietary fglrx driver, using various ATI cards

2006-10-28 Thread robert b
Radeon X800 GT, Asus A8N-SLI, AMD64: I've upgraded to 6.10 now. Using
radeon seems to fix the problem for me. fglrx still has the lockups.

2006-06-25 Thread robert b
Desktop: Radeon X800 GT, Asus A8N-SLI, AMD64. Grafics is not on board. As i've
noted before, non of the workarounds works for me. Neither can i use the ati
driver. My machine is absolutely unuseable.
Again: Please consider this bug as critical!
