[Bug 1575092] Re: Reinstall of Ubuntu 16.04 over failed upgrade of Ubuntu (15.10 -> 16.04) results in grub installation failure
Thanks for this explanation. I re-installed 16.04 from scratch, erasing the disk. Not without difficulties, though, as I got an error message about not being able "to mount a file system with type vfat in SCSI1" (fixed that by booting from USB into a live system and writing a new GPT partition table before re-attempting installation onto the now empty disk with empty partition table). The new installation was done in UEFI mode. A note about the warning message that you referred to, i.e.: "This machine's firmware has started the installer in UEFI mode but it looks like there may be existing operating systems already installed using "BIOS compatibility mode". If you continue to install Debian in UEFI mode, it might be difficult to reboot the machine into any BIOS- mode operating systems later. If you wish to install in UEFI mode and don't care about keeping the ability to boot one of the existing systems, you have the option to force that here. If you wish to keep the option to boot an existing operating system, you should choose NOT to force UEFI installation here." On re-reading this message in light of what you explained it now makes sense. At the moment, however, I didn't realise that "one of the existing systems" actually included the one I was trying to repair (which was the only system installed). Somehow I thought the message referred to Windows or other systems. The dialogue box then provides two options: "Go Back " and "Continue in UEFI mode". What I was missing to see was an option to "Continue in BIOS mode". Am I right in guessing that that needs to be selected in the BIOS before rebooting the machine? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1575092 Title: Reinstall of Ubuntu 16.04 over failed upgrade of Ubuntu (15.10 -> 16.04) results in grub installation failure To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/1575092/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1575092] [NEW] Reinstall of Ubuntu 16.04 over failed upgrade of Ubuntu (15.10 -> 16.04) results in grub installation failure
Public bug reported: I had a working Ubuntu 15.10 installation (which itself was an upgrade from an earlier release). Got prompted if I wanted to upgrade to 16.04 and answered yes. During the upgrade several dozen packages failed to install, many of them libraries. I was eventually left with a system that would not work so I decided to reinstall the OS, keeping existing user files intact (booting from USB). The install proceeded without problems but at the end I got the error message "The 'grub-efi- amd64-signed' package failed to install into / target/." Now I'm left with a computer without any working OS. [Bug 792085] Re: Automatic remount of safely removed drive
This bug affects me too, on 14.04 (kernel 3.13.0-46). However, the curious thing is that it only affects me with the new Transcend StoreJet 25H3 external HDD (USB 3.0) that I got recently. Before that I was using a Seagate external HDD (also USB 3.0) which I was able to safely remove (either using Nautilus or from the command line with udisks --detach). This seems to suggest that the drive itself is responsible for this behaviour. The Transcend drive has a hardware button which on Windows is supposed to do a quick reconnect for a detached device, or a one-touch backup when connected. On Linux this button seems not to have any effect, but the fact that the drive can go from detached state back to attached state by its own action could possibly be the reason we're seeing this strange behaviour. Perhaps it's not a bug but a feature... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/792085 Title: Automatic remount of safely removed drive To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/792085/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 877279] Re: EOG - Image viewer hangs system when opening large image file
I c an confirm this bug. Just tried to open a 1.6MB JPG image file using eog. It shows Opening image ... and the beginning bit of the progress bar and then freezes. My system monitor also freezes and the only thing that still works is the mouse pointer, although it's slower than normal. All window buttons, menus, desktop etc. are unresponsive to mouse interaction. Keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, Ctrl- Alt-Delete etc.) don't work. This is not the first time this has happened to me. It has affected my office PC (Dell Optiplex 755) as well as my home PC (Dell Inspiron 530), both running Ubuntu 11.10 32bit, and already surfaced when I was still using Ubuntu 11.04. It seems to affect eog only as gimp and shotwell don't have this problem. This is a critical bug as the only way to recover from it is to do a hard reset, which could result in the loss of data. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/877279 Title: EOG - Image viewer hangs system when opening large image file To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eog/+bug/877279/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 643017] [NEW] radio and check box buttons in clearlooks on nVidia
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gtk2-engines Radio and checkbox buttons on all clearlooks-related themes are rendered rather horribly. The foreground color for checked seems to be almost exactly the same color as the background. Only by hovering over and/or focusing on the check or radio button can the state (checked or unchecked) be seen (barely). I suspect that this has something to do with a poor interaction with the xserver display. This is on a Mac Mini using the nVidia display driver. (The exactly same theme and font combination works perfectly on a non- Apple laptop not using the nVidia driver.) [Bug 601366] [NEW] Xorg freeze
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg So, my X session suddenly became stuck. I was moving around the mouse cursor with the touchpad when it froze. I was using Firefox and about to click on a tab. I happened to have had an opportunity to log into this laptop from a desktop (via ssh) and poke around. I first killed the gnome-session. No go. Then, I tried killing X. It wouldn't die -- a ps revealed D, as in it was waiting on a device (it wasn't clear which device). I killed the parent gdm process, but X was still around and the screen still frozen. Since killing X was impossible (and therefore CTL-ALT-F1 not an option), I did a sudo reboot to reboot the system. I should note that I had logged off my session and logged on a few times. I don't usually do this. I was hoping to get the touchpad wheel scrolling to work better (it's too slow) in my VNC client, but logging off and on didn't help. To reproduce: randomly, after a number of times (I would guess once every 10 or so times), typing in my password after the screen is locked via gnome-screensaver, the screen remains black/blank with just the mouse cursor there. Ctl-Alt-F1 does not change this, neither does Ctl- Alt-Backspace nor Ctl-Alt-Del. As mentioned in the above referenced comment, the only workaround is to disable gnome-screensaver. Note that I am not in a position to log into my system while this happens and therefore cannot run any diagnostics or tests. The system is a Acer Aspire AS5740-5512 laptop. [Bug 532005] [NEW] gnome-power-manager doesn't show icon as non-root user
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager The battery icon only seems to show if I do $ sudo gnome-power-manager That is, if gnome-power-manager is run as root, the battery icon in the notification area in the taskbar shows. If I run as a normal user, it doesn't. I assume that there is some permission issue. My icon never appears -- it looks just like a terminal icon and there is no pulldown menu. (My volume control icon has a similar problem in that it also has the terminal icon.)
