[Bug 776978] Re: everything on screen is garbled apart from the top bar (2 monitors, different resolutions, unity, natty)

2011-05-20 Thread rogmorri
Similar problem here. Acer Timelinex laptop, 4820T ZQ1B with Intel HD
graphics.

If I boot without the second monitor plugged in, then after logging in
plug in the monitor, it works. (albeit without any advanced graphics
support).

2010-10-15 Thread rogmorri
When I boot the maverick-alternate-amd64.iso 07-Oct-2010 16:47 image
from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/, I do not see the
unknown BIOS error message.

:-)

the syslog file is attached.

I didn't try actually installing from this image to see how the result
works. I'll try to do that next week.

[Bug 655973] [NEW] trackpad not recognized on Gateway LT3119u laptop

2010-10-06 Thread rogmorri
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

When booting from a USB stick (built against Maverick rc build), the
multi-touch trackpad is recognized as a ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse.

When touching the trackpad, the mouse flies wildly around the screen.

[Bug 445852] Re: devkit-disks-probe-ata-smart causes HSM Violations on SSD, and potential hardware death

2010-01-06 Thread rogmorri
The factory-installed SSD on my Aspire Acer One 110-1722, a tier-2
netbook, died a few months ago. In retrospect, I think the issue was
this very bug.

(I've since replaced the SSD with a 16G after-market drive, which also
suffered from this problem.)

Wouldn't a problem like this, where there's no easy workaround for
avoiding the problem at install time, call for releasing a new 9.10.1
Ubuntu iso?

@Scott,

 int k = open(/dev/sda, O_WRONLY);

It might be good then to warn people not to run parted --list to view

[Bug 455122] Re: gcc chokes under Karmic's smbfs

2009-11-05 Thread rogmorri

I added a bit of instrumentation to libcpp/files.c (where the error happens)
and observed that the size of st_ino in struct stat is 4. This indicates that
the cpp1 program wasn't built with -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64.

I may well not have built cpp1 the same way it's built in Karmic, but in
my case I again got the Value too large... error, and in my case the
cause was definitely the huge inode number.

So, I suggest the problem is one of
  - A problem in gcc
  - A problem in the way gcc is built for Ubuntu
  - Maybe samba isn't supposed to be making these huge inode numbers.

[Bug 455122] [NEW] gcc chokes on huge st_ino values.

2009-10-18 Thread rogmorri
Public bug reported:

I'm guessing that this is a gcc problem (both gcc-4.3 and gcc-4.4)
that's exposed by the latest samba/cifs code in Karmic, but maybe this
is a samba problem, or maybe something else.

I can't seem to run gcc in a samba-mounted directory under Karmic (up to
date as of 2009-10-18), but this was okay in 9.04 Ubuntu

r...@hina:/c/Temp/y$ mount | grep cifs
//1USL13385/C on /c type cifs (rw,mand)
r...@hina:/c/Temp/y$ cat grape.c
int main() { return 0; }
r...@hina:/c/Temp/y$ gcc grape.c
cc1: error: grape.c: Value too large for defined data type
r...@hina:/c/Temp/y$

The problem seems to happen in cc1.I tried this with strace in
  - Karmic, local mount
  - Karmic, cifs mount
  - 9.04, cifs mount
and the only obvious difference I notice is the huge inode number in the
Karmic/cifs combination...

Not that anyone cares, but without the fontconfig-voodoo -f -s ja_JP
fix, this continues to happen in Ubuntu 8.10.

Actually, bug 219931 happens with pre-entered text as well. I first
noticed it on a web page I happened to view.

[Bug 219931] Re: Japanese font switching issue

2008-04-26 Thread rogmorri
I did a complete re-install with the released 8.04 image. All I did was
enable Japanese support, including enter complex characters support,
and the problem was there. Screen shot attached.

This seems to happen in text fields in various gtk applications and in
web pages rendered with Firefox (including this current page), but I
don't see this in kde applications.

[Bug 219931] [NEW] Japanese font switching issue

2008-04-20 Thread rogmorri
Public bug reported:

Actually, there are two separate issues, See attached screen shot.

Firstly, as I'm entering Japanese text (into Nautilus, or Firefox, or
wherever), when I type Japanese hiragana characters it seems to switch
to one font, then when I type Japanese kanji characters, it seems to
switch to another. From a brief inspection, it seems that all the
installed fonts either contain no Japanese characters, or contain both
hiragana and kanji characters. So, why is it switching between fonts
like that?

Secondly, the default font seems to vertically center the Japanese comma
and period characters. What's up with that? I'm not a Japanese expert,
but I think this is as abnormal in Japanese as centering a comma or
period in English text would be.

When combined, the above two issues are especially annoying. The comma
character moves up and down in the same sentence, depending on what
character was before it.

Actually, as I type this, I realize why a font would have a vertically-
centered comma and period like that -- this would be appropriate for
vertical text. So perhaps the question is, why is a vertical font being
selected or why does the font engine thing I'm typing vertically?

For reference, here is the text from the attached screen shot...
AAA、。あああ、。曲、。あ、。
(The comma and period are u3001 and 3002, the hiragana character is u3042, and
the kanji is u66f2)

Ubuntu 8.04 beta, no compiz, Japanese language installed and default
font size set to 12, but otherwise everything is pretty-much as one
would get from a fresh install. (The same issues are seen when font
size is 10, the default). I've only tried this under gnome.

[Bug 219931] Re: Japanese font switching issue

2008-04-20 Thread rogmorri
I tried this:
  - created a new user
  - rebooted
  - logged in as that user
  - selected Enable support to enter complex characters under Language
Support.
  - this forced me to reboot again
  - logged in again as that new user
  - The problem was still there.

Well, if you can't reproduce it, I'll try re-installing and see what
happens.

[Bug 160264] Re: [nvidia] compiz displays white screen when locked

2008-04-17 Thread rogmorri
I see this in 8.04 beta, nvidia card, only when compiz is active.

The way I fall into this situation is:
  - Login to user A
  - Switch users to user B
  - logout (from user B)
  - screen goes white.

[Bug 194774] Re: Firefox 3.0 crashed playing after 3 or 4 movies from Youtube

2008-04-17 Thread rogmorri
I see this (probably this) crash quite frequently. I feel lucky if I
can play 5 youtube videos in a row.

Like the sample video links in the original bug report, the videos I
watch usually have Chinese or Japanese text associated with them.
Related? I don't know.

I can't seem to reproduce this by saving the web pages locally and
displaying those. I need to go to Youtube to cause the crash.

[Bug 194774] Re: Firefox 3.0 crashed playing after 3 or 4 movies from Youtube

2008-04-17 Thread rogmorri
For what it's worth, I can reproduce this on demand. Using these links from
the original bug report:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgP4ez0epYo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90rfYlvt4Ns
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQWvFJDJ3GI

I right click the first one and Open Link in New Window. Then a
couple seconds after the video starts playing, I drag the second link to
that new window. If that doesn't crash it, a couple seconds after the
second video starts I drag the third link to the new window.

I crashed 3.0b5 firefox ten out of ten tries doing this.

2008-03-24 Thread rogmorri
I had trouble with a fresh installation of beta last night when I
selected Japanese from the very beginning of the install. I suspect
that the trouble was this bug (though I haven't gone back to verify
that).

I just wanted to say that after a fix for this bug is put into place, it
would probably be a good idea to try a fresh beta installation again
using Japanese or Chinese from the very beginning just to see what
happens.
