[Bug 1958309] [NEW] ax88179_178a: Link state changes cause USB hiccups

2022-01-18 Thread rojer
Public bug reported:

Bus 003 Device 061: ID 0b95:1790 ASIX Electronics Corp. AX88179 Gigabit
Ethernet

Link changes on this device cause approx. 5 second hiccups on the USB
bus - keyboard and mouse become unresponsive.

Here's my USB device tree:

[rojer@nbd ~]$ lsusb -t
/: Bus 04.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/6p, 1M
/: Bus 03.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/12p, 480M

Ethernet adapter and keyboard marked by "<===", they only share root hub.

To reproduce - replug the the cable or force link renegotiation with
"sudo ethtool -s enxa0cec8fb9be3 autoneg on", observe hiccup wiht KB and
mouse unresponsive.

AX driver is to blame because this does not happen with other USB-eth
adapters, e.g. r8152, even when plugged into the same hub as ax88179:

|__ Port 1: Dev 61, If 0, Class=Vendor Specific Class,
Driver=ax88179_178a, 480M
|__ Port 2: Dev 62, If 0, Class=Hub, Driver=hub/2p, 480M
|__ Port 1: Dev 63, If 0, Class=Vendor Specific Class,
Driver=r8152, 480M

Link changes on r8152 do not cause hiccups.

[Bug 1941798] Re: Focal update: v5.4.140 upstream stable release

2021-10-22 Thread rojer
this update caused a regression in ch341 driver:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1947780

already fixed upstream, just needs to apply the upstream patch (which is
a revert of the original change).

[Bug 1913852] Re: zLib link failures on Xenial

2021-02-10 Thread rojer
yes, zlib.a is bad:

root@26d441ac192e:/usr/lib/go-1.13/src/cmd/link# go tool nm
/usr/lib/go-1.13/pkg/linux_amd64/compress/zlib.a | head
open /usr/lib/go-1.13/pkg/linux_amd64/compress/zlib.a: unrecognized object file

on the surface it does look like go archive but obviously something is not
quite right.
gzip.a in the same directory is fine:

root@26d441ac192e:/usr/lib/go-1.13/src/cmd/link# go tool nm
/usr/lib/go-1.13/pkg/linux_amd64/compress/gzip.a | head

 U bufio..inittask
 U compress/flate.(*Writer).Reset
 U compress/flate.(*compressor).close
 U compress/flate.(*compressor).syncFlush
 U compress/flate.(*compressor).write
 U compress/flate..inittask

[Bug 1780723] [NEW] Wrong expansion of $PLATFORM by ld.so on 18.04

2018-07-09 Thread rojer
Public bug reported:

It seems that expansion of the $PLATFORM dynamic linker variable has
changed between xenial and bionic:

rojer@xenial$ apt-cache policy libc6
libc6:
  Installed: 2.23-0ubuntu10
  Candidate: 2.23-0ubuntu10
rojer@xenial$ LD_PRELOAD='/foo/$LIB/$PLATFORM/bar.so' strace -f /bin/true 2>&1
| grep '^open.*foo'
open("/foo/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/x86_64/bar.so", O_RDONLY|O_CLOEXEC) = -1 ENOENT
(No such file or directory)

rojer@bionic$ apt-cache policy libc6
libc6:
  Installed: 2.27-3ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.27-3ubuntu1
rojer@bionic$ LD_PRELOAD='/foo/$LIB/$PLATFORM/bar.so' strace -f /bin/true 2>&1
| grep '^open.*foo'
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/foo/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/haswell/bar.so",
O_RDONLY|O_CLOEXEC) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

What was `x86_64` before has changed to `haswell` which is way too
specific and also doesn't match the man page for ld.so which clearly
states:

   $PLATFORM (or equivalently ${PLATFORM})
This expands to a string corresponding to the processor type of
the host system (e.g., "x86_64"). On some architectures, the Linux kernel
doesn't provide a platform string to the dynamic linker. The value of this
string is taken
from the AT_PLATFORM value in the auxiliary vector (see
getauxval(3)).

I verified that `getauxval(AT_PLATFORM)` still returns `x86_64`.

[Bug 1296093] Re: Allow ungrouping window or application switchers

2014-11-15 Thread rojer
yes, please. however, in the mean time, there is a workaround - use
static application switcher instead of unity switcher.

0) install compizconfig-settings-manager
1) close all apps (you'll see later why)
2) run ccsm.
3) enable static app switcher in the window management section, disabled by
default. it will report conflicts of key bindings, enable anyway. note: you
want static application switcher, not the regular application switcher.
yes, there are two, the regular one works but icons look screwy, don't use it.
static application switcher is the shit.
3a) WARNING: this will cause session to re-initialize, and once i had it get
completely screwed up and had to re-login. but this is why you closed all apps
in step (1), haven't you? so you'll be fine. press ctrl-alt-f2, log in from the
text console, sudo killall Xorg and re-login. or just reboot.
4) you'll note that ubuntu unity switcher is still active, we're not done yet.
run ccsm again, go to desktop - ubuntu unity plugin - switcher tab and
disable all the shortcuts (click the pencil icon, untick enabled).
5) still in ccsm, go back to window management - static app switcher, which
should be enabled, click on it and set shortcuts for Next window (all
windows) and Previous window (all windows). you want all windows, not just
next/previous, which are also there and work like ubuntu switcher. set then to
alt-tab and shift-alt-tab or whatever you prefer.

presto! easy-peasy.

but really, this should be an option of the ubuntu switcher.

[Bug 1328898] Re: VMware guest video broken by the 3.2.0.64 kernel update

2014-07-03 Thread rojer
Chris, as mentioned above, my host is a modified Ubuntu 12.04 (with a newer
3.13 kernel), amd64.
i'm afraid i cannot post exact build details because it's an internal corporate
build.
my player version is 6.0.2 build-1744117, guest os is a vanilla 12.04 amd64

the image i'm using was created a couple years ago using earlier
versions of vmware.

[Bug 1328898] Re: VMware guest video broken by the 3.2.0.64 kernel update

2014-07-02 Thread rojer
Hi Chris.

my host is a custom distro derived from Ubuntu with custom 3.13 kernel, guest
is a plain 12.04 x64.
i have performed steps 1-6, this is how i isolated your patch:

1) sudo apt-get install linux-source-3.2.0=3.2.0-63.95
2) make -j3 deb-pkg, this produces linux-image-3.2.59_3.2.59-0_amd64.deb
3) dpkg -i linux-image-3.2.59_3.2.59-0_amd64.deb

this kernel boots fine, no issues.

repeat with linux-source-3.2.0=3.2.0-64.97 - this kernel boots into a split
screen.
in the same source tree, edit drivers/gpu/drm/vmwgfx/vmwgfx_fb.c to manually
back out changes made in lkml/2014/2/1/41, make deb-pkg, install - this kernel
(3.2.59-2) boots normally.

i'll try removing vmw_write now.

removing (commenting out) vmw_write is not enough, the following patch
still produces split screen output. http://pastebin.com/FYJEULF3

and to confirm what cedrig91 is saying - yes, my VM is also quite old.

booting kernel with the following patch http://pastebin.com/NBeRfwYJ and
running dmesg | grep fb_fix comes back empty, so vmw_fb_check_var is
not invoked.

however, in my setup there is a reliably reproducible link between
changes to info-fix.line_length and the split screen issue: comment out
info-fix.line_length changes = everything's fine, put them back in
info-fix.line_length = split screen on boot.

regression is caused by a this patch applied with the 3.2.0.58 -
3.2.0.59 update which happened between -64 and -65 (LP#1319885):

drm/vmwgfx: correct fb_fix_screeninfo.line_length

rolling back just that one patch fixes the issue.

[Bug 1094176] [NEW] Multi-monitor - Maximized windows move to the larger monitor after opening/closing the lid

2012-12-27 Thread rojer
Public bug reported:

I've found quite a few issues with multi-monitor setups and maximized
windows, but none seem quite like this one.

What i see is that windows that were maximized on the smaller screen
always move to the larger one after i close and then open the laptop lid
and unlock the session. Windows that were not maximized at the time are
not affected.

This 40 second video demonstrates the behavior:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU8KCm6Edv8

In it, i have two screens one on top of another, the external monitor is
the larger one and is on top of the smaller one, which is a built-in
screen. i have two windows on the smaller screen, a gnome-terminal and a
help window. i maximize the help window, close and open the lid, unlock
the session and return to find the help window maximized but on the
larger screen above. gnome-terminal stays where it was but for some
reason its menu strip is now obscured by the toolbar (but it only
happens to that particular window, if i open another terminal it is not
affected).

Simply locking the screen does not produce the effect, only closing the
lid does.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS, fully updated.

i can confirm that it is not fixed in upstream and it only affects
32-bit systems where size_t is an unsigned int while loff_t is long
long. on 64-bit archs size_t is unsigned long which means it's 64-bit as
well.

ecryptfs_* functions need to be converted to use loff_t everywhere.

i removed .pulse-cookie - no change. haven't tried removing .pulse as it
seems pointless - as you can see from attached strace, it does not touch
any of the fiels in user's directory. instead, it seems to be stuck in

few kilobytes each time. over long period, this adds up.

this is because libwebkit has been updated and minor version got bumped

[Bug 439316] [NEW] GDM won't start, hangs in upstart on emit starting-dm

2009-09-30 Thread rojer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Latest change indictaes that emitting an upstart signal was added.
This broke GDM on my machine - emitting signal gets stuck and gdm does not
start.
Logging in on the console and killing the initctl process resumes GDM startup.
See attached screenshot 1 for boot process - it gets stuck at this point. Note
that my default DM is GDM even though boot screen complains about KDM.

I do see what seems like a splash screen during boot, although it says
kubuntu (i think is because i selected both ubuntu desktop and kubuntu
desctop during installation -- btw, shouldn't that depend on the default DM?)
it disappears almost immediately, and then we have the lockup i described.
there isn't anything with splash in the name running when gdm is starting up.

[Bug 275439] Re: Pidgin 2.4.1 (Hardy): proper closed connection handling patch from upstream

2009-01-17 Thread Rojer
i understand the last one is a (semi) automated reply.

*come on people*! just look at the patch, read the relevant thread and
you'll see. it's so simple it's frustrating to see it not being fixed
this long.

this is not an issue for 8.10 or 9.04 - those already have the fix. i myself
have moved to 8.10.
it still makes sense to patch it in 8.04 though as it is an LTS release, and
this bug is *extremely* annoying.

[Bug 275439] Re: Pidgin 2.4.1 (Hardy): proper closed connection handling patch from upstream

2009-01-17 Thread Rojer
this bug is *not* incomplete, it contains everything needed to fix the
issue. someone just needs to apply the patch.

[Bug 275439] Re: Pidgin 2.4.1 (Hardy): proper closed connection handling patch from upstream

2008-09-29 Thread rojer
* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

this happens often when wifi connecton goes away, but i can't say i can
reproduce it at will. i guess it depends on how exactly connection is
terminated (my guess is that it it is write that fails then it's ok, but
if it happens to be in this poll, then it starts looping).

description at the nabble.com link matches my symptoms exactly.
and if you look at the patch it's pretty clear what's going on: reading 0 bytes
only happens when connection has gone away and should be treated as an error.

[Bug 275439] [NEW] Pidgin 2.4.1 (Hardy): proper closed connection handling patch from upstream

2008-09-28 Thread rojer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

the following patch needs to be brought in from upstream to fix Pidgin
uses 100% CPU problem on hardy:

http://developer.pidgin.im/viewmtn/revision/diff/4d5c3b5ef59ce60e98576ffc7edf6ebb0960fff1/with/1d533cebad7c0dbda8ec8ebee1334d27dcae5f9c/libpurple/protocols/jabber/jabber.c

it appears to cause at least the following bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/pidgin/+bug/223443

and a number of other complaints where pidgin gets stuck in a loop reading from
a closed socket.
my strace looks something like:

poll([{fd=4, events=POLLIN}, {fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=6, events=POLLIN},
{fd=10, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=15, events=POLLIN}, {fd=20, events=POLLIN},
{fd=21, events=POLLIN}, {fd=17, events=POLLIN}, {fd=16, events=POLLIN,
revents=POLLIN}], 9, 0) = 1
read(16, , 4095) = 0
read(3, 0x812ebd4, 4096)= -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
gettimeofday({1222605234, 242155}, NULL) = 0
poll([{fd=4, events=POLLIN}, {fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=6, events=POLLIN},
{fd=10, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=15, events=POLLIN}, {fd=20, events=POLLIN},
{fd=21, events=POLLIN}, {fd=17, events=POLLIN}, {fd=16, events=POLLIN,
revents=POLLIN}], 9, 0) = 1
read(16, , 4095) = 0
read(3, 0x812ebd4, 4096)= -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
gettimeofday({1222605234, 242261}, NULL) = 0
