[Bug 1788997] Re: rtl8723be wifi does not work under linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-33-generic

2019-03-07 Thread royden
I guess folk like myself who upgraded to Cosmic and 4.18 have a working
wifi with ant_sel=1. Bionic has the problem, ironically given that it is
LTS.

BTW, I suspect there are other issues with the rtl8723be under 4.18 - my
connection stalls after a while, until modprobe -r && modprobe then all
is well again

2018-10-23 Thread royden
Tested bionic-proposed kernel 4.15.0-38.41.

There now is no difference between ant_sel=0,1,or 2 BUT compared to
4.15.0-32 ant_sel=2, the reception is 70% as opposed to 100%.

Go figure :-)

@jsalisbury: ant_sel=1 with 4.15.0-36 kernel gives no improvement, both
ant_sel 1 & 2 yield a poor signal.

So, I believe http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1788997 has the
problem fixed, but only with ant_sel=1.

2018-08-25 Thread royden
For those on Bionic and who recently met the trouble, try down-grading
linux-firmware to 1.73 from 1.73.1. Test.

I have a different wifi chipset and met problems wifi with the update solved by
the downgrading.
Of course, YMMV. If this helps, then a new bug report must be filed for each
chipset and v1.73.1.

[Bug 1475895] Re: Camera froze taking picture and would no longer show a preview

2016-01-21 Thread royden
Testing the fix released for Bug #1519766 (and likely #1478693) I can
reliably freeze the camera-app (v. 3.0.0.616) on rc-proposed Arale r227
by taking HDR images.

Freeze happens around the 3rd or 4th shot of the same subject as
reported in Bug #1519766.

HDR shots of shaded lamp in semi-dark room (taking up 3/4 of view)
trigger freeze on 4/5th shot.

HDR shots of lamp on small table at distance in semi-dark room do not
reliably trigger freeze.

Normal shots do not trigger freeze, with or without zoom AFAIKS.

Freeze comprises either the viewfinder holding the image of the
attempted capture and app being no longer responsive and needing to be
closed. Re-opening produces "Cannot access camera" error message screen,
with access permission or some other error as cause. Reboot needed to
regain camera function.

Other freeze seen was a return of the viewfinder to a dark screen, and
the same error message screen appearing.

Original reporter did not mention HDR, so I defer to better judgement as
to where this bug belongs.

[Bug 1528886] Re: Checking for updates never finishes

2015-12-30 Thread royden
Given that "download" appears as the option, if you are correct,
that is a rather poor choice of word. I assume that
"detect an update" and "download" are different. Am I wrong,
because I believe that I detect them on 3G even though I do
not want to auto-download them?

[Bug 1519766] [NEW] HDR fail on patterned high contrast image

2015-11-25 Thread royden
Public bug reported:

Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Touch rc-proposed r178

camera app v. 3.0.0.604

Background: I was taking general forest shots successfully and then
tried a close-up of a frost dusted spider web. Capture animation
displayed but nothing got shown in Photo Roll aside of the Ubuntu
spinner. General shots still succeeded. This happened twice in field,
second time with frost dusted, repetitively patterned moss. This was
version v3.0.0.595.

Reproduction: place black mosquito net over back-lighted opaque perspex
and photograph from 15-20 cm distance (see attachment), with HDR
function enabled and phone held steady.

Expected outcome: image captured.

Actual outcome: no image shown in Photo Roll. .Jpeg image file is
present in Pictures but corrupt (see attachment), even if viewed on PC.
For me, this result is invariable with my test image setup.

It appears that regularly patterned, high contrast scenes cause the HDR
routine to "choke". A few months back I saw this with HDR in a high
contrast general scene without realising what caused it. Note, camera
shake under HDR results in captured image.

With Camera v. 3.0.0.595, the issue would persist even with normal
shots after the HDR one. With v. 3.0.0.604 disabling HDR allows image to
be captured.

** Affects: camera-app (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Another work around if you want to select a whole word or string of

I suspect that you'll find that setting the option
in /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf will work if you run “sudo
update-initramfs -u” after editing the file. I've added that to the
wiki. This is needed if Ubuntu is loading the i915 driver from the
initramfs, before trying to mount the root filesystem. It will do this,
for example, if you've set up an encrypted filesystem for which you need
to enter the passphrase before it can be mounted.

Thanks, that worked. Never occurred to me as I don't have an encrypted
filesystem. Strangely, it knocks out plymouth (abs no big deal that)
whereas i915.modeset=1 on boot line does not.

I wish I had known about the problem with 10.04 the i855 chipset
before I ran the 'upgrade'. It sure would have been nice if anyone took
the time to include it in the known issues. I read it with great
interest and then went on to BRICK my d400.

Oh great, so it's back to 9.10 for 6 months until this WELL KNOWN BUG is
fixed (or not). How is open source software ever going to move into the
mainstream with this kind of BS? Wouldn't it make more sense to warn
people about this BUG (more like a bricker) than have them see that
open source is not ready for prime time and run back to Microsoft and
 Apple?

I do not wish to pick a fight. Please note:

Quote: Intel 8xx X freezes/crashes
The -intel driver fails with X freezes or crashes on certain i8xx
hardware. The issue is known upstream but solutions are still under
development. For now, to work around the issue, boot with the -vesa
video driver. See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes for
further details.

The Devs sweated long over this bug but the solution is beyond them
(yes, that hoary old upstream incantation) and so they put up the
warning and the info page.

[Bug 554835] Re: [855GM] GPU hang when an application tries to use XVideo

2010-04-29 Thread royden
@Chris Halse Rogers: did you mean Bug #541511?

@ LGB etc: My system also will not work without KMS. In fact, the 2.6.34
rc3 kernel with modeset=0 will not complete boot either. One peculiarity
on my system with kernel 2.6.32-21 is that setting modeset=1 via
/etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf does not work.

However, placing i915.modeset=1 on the boot line in grub does work. Go
figure - as devs have commented this is a highly contextual bug.

@Chris/Bryce: want the above on the wiki?

You are correct: someone duped Bug #555685 Bug #555685 to bug #79
so I followed suite. Yours has precedence over 79 and indeed over
some others. All in all the following are dupl. of Bug # 554432:
79, 555685, 556166, 559214, 557584.

@Tim Clark: Do you want to sort this out? I should prolly have left well
alone when I spotted some dupes before aborting an apport report on this
bug . IMO, bad searching by launchpad/apport is probably responsible
for some of the duplication one sees.

[Bug 387978] Re: KMS leads to i915 Xorg/ system hang on boot

2009-06-26 Thread royden
This bug was reported as requested by Bryce(?) in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting. I updated it for the
2.6.30-10-generic kernel before learning that KMS was enabled by default
and that i915 drivers were blacklisted for this mode, as indeed KMS does
not work on Intel 855GM [8086:3582] and 2.6.30-8-generic kernels. Xorg
is now upgraded to exploit the mode.

2.6.30-10-generic kernels should now boot fine in terms of KMS.
Problems are likely something else (see Karmic forum).

A pity we lost kms but there you ae

[Bug 387978] [NEW] KMS leads to i915 Xorg/ system hang on boot

2009-06-16 Thread royden
Public bug reported:

Karmic Testing.

xserver-xorg-core: 2:1.6.1.901-2ubuntu1
xserver-xorg-intel: 2:2.7.99.901+git20090615.3da549f5-0ubuntu0sarvatt
kernel: 2.6.30-9-generic
Intel 855 [8086:3582] (rev 02)

Enabling KMS via either options i915 modeset=1 in
/etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf or modprobe i915 modeset=1,
/etc/init.d/gdm start leads to a system-wide freeze (hard-off or SysReq
B (only that key works)). Mode change apparent in console. Testing shows
that hang starts at X startup. No debugging obtained yet locally or by
remote (many tries) and nothing entered in logs, but binary and
misplaced text is injected into messages and other logs.

Works fine without KMS.

NOTE: kernel: 2.6.30-8-generic works fine.

Quote: This report is a duplicate of bug #199496

That bug has a fix released involving gtk-sharp2 (2.12.0-2ubuntu2) and
gnome-sharp2 (2.20.0-2ubuntu2). Neither are dependencies of f-spot and
the f-spot.exe crashed with SIGSEGV (/usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0)

Duplicate status wrong.

2008-03-29 Thread royden
I got a segfault from users-admin with users-admin crashed with SIGSEGV
in strcmp() whilst logged in as root (yes, I know :) but it worked in
making the user. Noticed crash report via apport when logged back in as
normal user.

Worth adding to the Gnome number or a forgetter as it seems not to
effect matters?

[Bug 206470] [NEW] udev - wrong permissions in udev rules for usb camera

2008-03-25 Thread royden
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: udev

OS: Hardy (fully updated)
Package: udev 117-4ubuntu1

Actions: plug in Canon D-Ixus 400 to usb port, switch camera on. lsusb
confirms camera found.

Result: (f-prot does not run automatically) A manual run of f-prot
cannot find camera, with message cannot claim usb

Workarounds: 1) (f-prot segfaults when run as sudo) At CLI sudo gtkam
results in camera being correctly read.

2) Edit /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules - replace:

SUBSYSTEM==usb, ENV{DEVTYPE}==usb_device, MODE=0664
SUBSYSTEM==usb_device,MODE=0664

with

SUBSYSTEM==usb, ENV{DEVTYPE}==usb_device, GROUP=plugdev
SUBSYSTEM==usb_device,GROUP=plugdev

f-prot now finds camera (tho' still does not run automatically upon
inserting camera).

Realted forum reports:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4232045
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=733508

Comments:
I note that /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libgphoto2.rules no longer exists and am
unsure if the above edits are safe for all usb devices excl block, printers
etc.

Will attach udevmonitor etc.output shortly

[Bug 203773] [NEW] pm-hibernate fails unless preceded by pm-suspend

2008-03-18 Thread royden
Public bug reported:

OS: Hardy (updated as of submission date / time)

Symptoms on Fujitsu Siemns Lifebook s7010 (no additions/changes), 512
RAM, 75% of hd free.

Fresh boot. Using hibernate in gnome power button (g-p-b) leads to
partial off (looks like a suspend to RAM on mini LCD panel but cursor
blinking on display). Will not switch on at power button and requires
hard-off.

Fresh boot. Use suspend option in g-p-b. Successful. Resume and then try
hibernate. Successful.

(ttys via c+a F1 etc however no longer display, showing a blank g-p-b
rectangle in each)

Test cases:

Fresh boot. At CLI run pm-hibernate. Failure.
Fresh boot. At CLI run pm-suspend. Succesful. Resume. Run pm-hibernate.
Succesful. (No surprise as HArdy uses pm-utils. But ...).

Significant test:
Fresh boot. At CLI run /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh. Successful outcome.

ttys via c+a F1 etc DO display properly.

Some similarity here to Bug #162654 re pm-utils vs acpi

Anything else to do here - tweak the quirks?

[Bug 203773] Re: pm-hibernate fails unless preceded by pm-suspend

2008-03-18 Thread royden
** Description changed:

OS: Hardy (updated as of submission date / time)

Symptoms on Fujitsu Siemns Lifebook s7010 (no additions/changes), 512
  RAM, 75% of hd free.

Fresh boot. Using hibernate in gnome power button (g-p-b) leads to
partial off (looks like a suspend to RAM on mini LCD panel but cursor
blinking on display). Will not switch on at power button and requires
  hard-off.

Fresh boot. Use suspend option in g-p-b. Successful. Resume and then try
  hibernate. Successful.

(ttys via c+a F1 etc however no longer display, showing a blank g-p-b
  rectangle in each)

  Test cases:

Fresh boot. At CLI run pm-hibernate. Failure.
Fresh boot. At CLI run pm-suspend. Succesful. Resume. Run pm-hibernate.
Succesful. (No surprise as HArdy uses pm-utils. But ...).

  Significant test:
Fresh boot. At CLI run /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh. Successful outcome.

ttys via c+a F1 etc DO display properly.

Some similarity here to Bug #162654 re pm-utils vs acpi

Anything else to do here - tweak the quirks?

[Bug 159042] Re: Nautilus is very slow in list mode

2007-11-01 Thread royden
I suggest seeing if you have assistive technology enabled and if so
disable it, reboot.

preferences - Universal Acess - etc.

Note to devs: this one can kill the nautilus experience :-)

[Bug 84868] Re: cannot compile module

2007-06-20 Thread royden
There seems again a problem in Feisty kernel 2.6.20-16 with building
nozomi-source 2.1-2.

/usr/src/modules/nozomi/nozomi.c: In function ‘nozomi_card_init’:
/usr/src/modules/nozomi/nozomi.c:1568: error: ‘INIT_WORK’ undeclared (first use
in this function)
/usr/src/modules/nozomi/nozomi.c:1568: error: (Each undeclared identifier is
reported only once
/usr/src/modules/nozomi/nozomi.c:1568: error: for each function it appears in.)
/usr/src/modules/nozomi/nozomi.c:1578: warning: overflow in implicit constant
conversion
/usr/src/modules/nozomi/nozomi.c: In function ‘ntty_tty_init’:
/usr/src/modules/nozomi/nozomi.c:2183: warning: assignment from incompatible
pointer type
/usr/src/modules/nozomi/nozomi.c:2184: warning: assignment from incompatible
pointer type
/usr/src/modules/nozomi/nozomi.c:2193: warning: assignment from incompatible
pointer type

default kernel module works so no biggie
