[Bug 654178] Re: Ubuntu 10.10 wont start strange image

2010-10-23 Thread rrfx
Long term ubuntu user here... same issue with nVidia GTS360M on Maverick
release.

To get your clean Maverick install booting:

In the grub boot menu edit the recovery mode option by hitting e,
add nomodeset to the last line. Ctrl-x to boot.

At the recovery menu choose root. Install the nvidia binary drivers by
typing: apt-get install nvidia-current

Reboot and enjoy an otherwise flawless install.

[Bug 520978] Re: KDE-4.4 upgrade causes desktop crash

2010-02-16 Thread rrfx
Thanks. Installing the package 'plasma-desktop' got my karmic install
half-way working.

The crash reports were then pointing to the ruby interpreter. Rather
than hunting down the particular plasmoid/ruby script that was causing
the crash I reset my desktop configuration by removing
$HOME/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc

[Bug 449526] Re: Eve Online works on Wine Beta on 9.04, not on 9.10

2009-10-15 Thread rrfx
Yes, i grabbed these debs:
linux-image-2.6.32-020632rc4-generic_2.6.32-020632rc4_amd64.deb
linux-headers-2.6.32-020632rc4_2.6.32-020632rc4_all.deb
linux-headers-2.6.32-020632rc4-generic_2.6.32-020632rc4_amd64.deb

And installed with dpkg -i linux*. Rebooted into single user and
installed the Nvidia binary drivers fine. There's a GCC version mismatch
in the Nvidia installer as the autobuilt packages are compiled with GCC
4.2. Ignored/overrode this and everything is working fine.

From what i'm seeing this confirms that the regression is related to
Karmic-specific kernel settings in 2.6.31.

Did you see any correlation in your google searches if its just amd64,
or i386 also? This is a pretty bad regression for Karmic to be shipping
with given the number of Eve-linux players that are likely Ubuntu-fan-
boys also.

Can we mark this bug as confirmed?

[Bug 449526] Re: Eve Online works on Wine Beta on 9.04, not on 9.10

2009-10-14 Thread rrfx
I tried the Karmic Wine1.2 packages just to be thorough and had the same
issue.

Thanks for the quote James. I had already tried /LUA:OFF which didn't
help. And i also had major audio issues using kernel 2.6.28-15 which
meant this was not even a good temporary solution.

I've just manually installed the auto-built vanilla amd64 kernel image
from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32-rc4/

They've worked perfectly every time, and seem to integrate with Karmic
okay.

Requoting: It just looks like the 2.6.31 kernel shipping in karmic has
issues.

[Bug 449526] Re: App works on Wine Beta on 9.04, not on 9.10

2009-10-13 Thread rrfx
Confirming I am also having this issue here on 64-bit Karmic beta (13th
Oct). It sounds like their are others also: http://eve-
search.com/thread/1195604

Wine 1.1.29 from WineHQ's repos has worked only once. Otherwise since
upgrading to Karmic beta and over multiple reboots, both of Winehq's
wine versions 1.1.31 and .29 have failed in the way James has described
more than ~50 times.

Eve has worked perfectly on this PC with the Winehq debs for 12+ months
over intrepid/jaunty.

No attempts to pre-load my quad-core cpu with 'yes /dev/null' or
glxgears have worked as they did for James.

Can provide any information as necessary, however it seems identical to
above.

[Bug 449526] Re: Eve Online works on Wine Beta on 9.04, not on 9.10

2009-10-13 Thread rrfx
Continuing from #12... I have just booted Karmic beta (14th oct
updates) using Jaunty's 2.6.28-15 kernel and my previous Eve
configuration with wine 1.1.31 from WineHQ works perfectly. I had tried
every other workaround seen on forums with kernel 2.6.31 with no luck.

Since upgrading to Karmic beta:
kernel 2.6.31, wine 1.1.31 failed 50 of 50 times over many reboots
kernel 2.6.28, wine 1.1.31 has just now worked perfectly 10 times

[Bug 269704] Re: apparmor audit log entries without path

2009-03-20 Thread rrfx
Excellent. Thanks for the information. Cant believe i didn't pick that
myself... 0x2F has always been an ascii slash!

My profile works perfectly now, thanks.

Perhaps the pathnames could be escaped with backslashes, like the rest of
linux, bash etc...
eg: /opt/games/eve/wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/bin/blue.dll

Feel free to close this bug, and/or feed the above comment upstream

Cheers

[Bug 300157] Re: OpenCV and IEEE 1394 (FireWire) fails, libdc1394-13 vs libdc1394-22 conflict

2008-11-25 Thread rrfx
I'll second this one.

I have little idea about the OpenCV side of things, however the long
term solution might be to update OpenCV v1.1pre to use libdc1394-22-dev
also? Probably a good time before OpenCV v1.1 is released?

How do we suggest this to the upstream devs through Launchpad?

[Bug 211105] Re: Frostwire: Can't load library libmawt.so (Hardy Beta)

2008-04-23 Thread rrfx
@Matthias: thanks for the tip off on where to look.

If i edit Frostwire's startup script nano
/usr/lib/frostwire/runFrostwire.sh i can see export
AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit at the top of the script. Commenting this line out
(as a user not root!!!) allows it to load with a couple of unrelated
Exceptions.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-openjdk

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ java -version
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.6.0-b09, mixed mode)

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ /usr/lib/frostwire/runFrostwire.sh
Starting FrostWire...
Java exec found in PATH. Verifying...
Suitable java version found [java = 1.6.0]
.

A note to anyone trying to load Using the menu launcher or by typing
frostwire... the standard /usr/bin/frostwire script sets the
AWT_TOOLKIT export also before starting the runFrostwire.sh script
above. You'll need to nano /usr/bin/frostwire and comment it out also.

I installed the .deb from here: http://www.frostwire.com/?id=downloads

Specifically frostwire-4.13.5.i586.deb

Should i notify the upstream packager about these insecure (user
writeable) scripts i edited above?

[Bug 211105] Re: Frostwire: Can't load library libmawt.so (Hardy Beta)

2008-04-18 Thread rrfx
The motif21 java libraries dont seem to be installed/linked in the
OpenJDK java package. (x86_64 Hardy beta updated on 2008-04-14)

If you have Sun's java installed (sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre):

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/opt/frostwire$ find /usr/ | grep libmawt.so

/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/amd64/headless/libmawt.so
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/amd64/xawt/libmawt.so
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.05/jre/lib/amd64/headless/libmawt.so
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.05/jre/lib/amd64/xawt/libmawt.so
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.05/jre/lib/amd64/motif21/libmawt.so ***

The last line shows the 'motif21/libmawt.so' library installed for Sun's
Java, and not OpenJDK.

Switching the default Java version to Sun's (sudo update-java-alternatives -s
java-6-sun) allows Frostwire to get a bit further, however it crashes with a
new error that is widely discussed:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=643566
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sun-java5/+bug/86103

The console commands below allowed me to start and run Frostwire easily
(with a few Locking assertion failure errors on console).

cd /usr/lib/frostwire;
java -jar FrostWire.jar

Cheers, Rob

[Bug 70787] Re: mounting using davfs not possible on Ubuntu 6.10

2007-03-23 Thread rrfx
For those that are interested, i'm using Edgy and couldn't get its
davfs2 package to work reliably. After my post a few back, Dapper's
version of davfs2 seems a bit flakey Feisty's version depends on a
more recent libc6 and libneon.

To get Feisty's current version (1.1.2) running i compiled it from source by:
-sudo bash
-added a line to /etc/apt/sources.list for feisty's universe sources.
-cd /usr/src
-apt-get source davfs2
-cd davfs2-1.1.2
-nano debian/control and change libneon26-dev to version 25
-apt-get install libneon25-dev
-dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -uc -b
-dpkg -i davfs2_1.1.2-3_i386.deb
-dpkg-reconfigure davfs2 (to set setuid bit)
-edit /etc/davfs2/davfs2.conf and change the 'dav_group' line to suit

This works perfectly for me, ymmv.

Note: I'm not sure why dpkg-reconfigure leaves the 'dav_group' line as
$group?? is this a bug, since the same happens in the Edgy version.
