[Bug 1766945] Re: (EFI on top of legacy install) choosing "replace" or "resize" options in partitioning may lead to an install failure

2019-12-16 Thread Saul Aguiar
I have a multi-partition legacy (BIOS) system. About a year ago, when
prompted by software loader, I upgraded from 16 LTS to 18.04 LTS
Performed several updates after that (as prompted) but something went
wrong with a systemd file (but system still worked well for many
months). Recently, I was prompted to do a partial update and it
completed happy but, next time I re-booted (selected version through
Grub as always have) and got a bunch of red exclamation points and
something about software frozen and system would not complete boot. On
Dec 13, 2019 I downloaded image of 18.04 from main Ubuntu page and
created bootable USB. This allowed me to create my user account and
password in order to back up my user data, but the "refreshed" 18.04.3
image still will not boot up via the original Grub (only runs with the
newly-created boot USB plugged in). Downloaded the 19.04 image on 12/15
from the primary Ubuntu page, over-wrote the bootable USB, and tried to
install it over top of 18.04.3 image and get complaints about EFI boot
will not work (of course, since my hardware is BIOS and not EFI).
Someone here suggested creating a 200 MB EFI partition anyway and that
will be my next step. At the moment the installer shows first a
partition for /sda (I take this to be the location of the original boot
software), followed by an ext4 partition named /sda4 (where an old
mythbuntu resides), followed by an ext4 partition /sda6 (where the 18.04
or 19.04 image is loaded, followed by /sda5 partition designated swap.

So, this bug is DEFINITELY NOT fixed.

I am a software engineer and would like to learn more about booting
Ubuntu. Can anyone suggest a good place in the Ubuntu document archive
to begin familiarization?

[Bug 1657234] Re: python-ctypeslib broken by castxml

2017-01-17 Thread Saul St. John
I hand-edited /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-
packages/ctypeslib/codegen/cparser.py to replace all references to
"gccxml" with "gccxml.real", and it works again.

Also, gccxml actually was always broken in the absence of specified
output, but differently so. Resultingly, h2xml would succeed, but not do
anything:

$ h2xml au.hhh
creating xml output file ...
running: gccxml /tmp/tmpsObrKS.cpp
$ ls
au.h
$

[Bug 1657234] [NEW] python-ctypeslib broken by castxml

2017-01-17 Thread Saul St. John
Public bug reported:

Consider this header file:

$ cat au.h
struct sus {
union {
struct {
int first_half :16;
int second_half :16;
};
int all_of_it;
};
};

Running h2xml (from python-ctypeslib) on it doesn't work any longer if
an output file is unspecified:

$ h2xml -k au.h
creating xml output file ...
running: gccxml /tmp/tmp38O3UX.cpp
Info: file '/tmp/tmp38O3UX.cpp' not removed
CompilerError:

That's because the gccxml wrapper provided by CastXML doesn't want to
write to stdout:

$ gccxml tmp38O3UX.cpp
GCC-XML compatibility CastXML wrapper
Usage: gccxml [options]  -fxml=

Note: not all the gccxml options are supported.
The real gccxml (not compatible with GCC 5) is available as gccxml.real.

Working around that, the wrapper still produces XML output xml2py (also from
python-ctypeslib) can't grok:

$ h2xml -k au.h -o au.xml
creating xml output file ...
running: gccxml /tmp/tmpWKQCEt.cpp -fxml=au.xml
Info: file '/tmp/tmpWKQCEt.cpp' not removed

$ xml2py au.xml

tl;dr: python-ctypeslib has been broken by CastXML, which is the default
upgrade path from gccxml.

I think you are right Phillip, I think that it has something to do with
the kernal that shipped with 16.04. I was able to fix the problem with
doing a full upgrade, using the command sudo apt-get upgrade and that
seemed to add a few fixes and one of them being the ability for the wifi
to start.

and xfwm4. On a dual-monitor setup, I accidentally kicked out the DVI
cable from one of the monitors and plugged it back in (this may have
already happened once or twice without consequence; I can't remember if
that was before or after the upgrade). This second monitor displays all
windows correctly, and the mouse cursor is able to move between screens
as usual. But none of the windows or other UI elements on the second
monitor receive focus or respond in any way. Switching virtual desktops
only switches the first monitor. Trying to move a window from the first
monitor to the second monitor shows the mouse cursor on the second
monitor but not the window contents (and the window gets stuck on the
first monitor as though there is no second monitor).

Going to the console and back to X blanks out the second monitor, but
the mouse cursor can still travel to it. NVIDIA X Server Settings no
longer shows the second monitor, and Detect Displays does not fix that.
ARandR shows both displays in its layout and allows both to be
configured, until a new layout is applied, then the second display is
completely disabled (mouse now properly stuck on first monitor) and not
configurable.

[Bug 1234334] Re: windows on previously disconnected second monitor no longer responsive

2013-10-02 Thread Saul F
Rebooting did not fix this issue; reseating the cable allowed X Server
Settings to detect the monitor. So apparently a loose monitor cable can
put the display into a limbo state.

[Bug 1119769] [NEW] initscript fail stopping suricata

2013-02-08 Thread Saul St. John
Public bug reported:

AFAICT, suricata cleans up its own pidfile when stopped by start-stop-
daemon. As a result, the instruction rm $PIDFILE /dev/null 21 in
the stop clause of the case statement in /etc/init.d/suricata exits with
an error status, which causes the entire script to as well (since it's
run by sh -e).

Attached patch adds -f to the rm instruction, so that it never fails.

it prevents the application or any dependencies from functioning
correctly at all, and renders essential features or functionality of

[Bug 1088731] Re: sudo apt-get install wine produced an error, exit code 1

2012-12-20 Thread Saul Lubkin
As noted above, the problem cam when I executed

sudo apt-get install wine

I believe the problem was related to the following: At one point, a
grey window came up, indicating that there was microsoft code or some
such thing, and requiring that I click on a radio button indicating
Yes. I was unable to click on the radio button; I tried.

So I killed the process.

The problem debconf, etc. .. has now occurred, every time new software
is attempted to be installed.

But the software seems to work fine.

I've just installed a new linux kernel.

My guess is, that I should reboot.

Had the debconf error not occurred, I believe that that would have
been the next step requested by the system.

[Bug 1084028] Re: openvswitch based interfaces not started in time during boot

2012-12-13 Thread Saul St. John
This bug also prevents starting some services (e.g. isc-dhcp-server) on
openvswitch interfaces at boot.

I avoided the problem by changing /etc/network/interfaces such that ovs
interfaces don't come up automatically, and ifupping them manually in
/etc/rc.local instead... but that's pretty silly.

[Bug 1089794] Re: kernel null pointer dereference on dell pe r210s

2012-12-13 Thread Saul St. John
I booted four servers a couple hours ago: two stock, one on the kernel
from quantal-proposed, and one on 3.7.0-030700-generic. Of them, only
the 3.7 box is still up, so I'm tagging this 'kernel-fixed-upstream' and
changing back to confirmed.

[Bug 1087886] [NEW] xen scripts' eth0 assumption broken by biosdevname

2012-12-07 Thread Saul St. John
Public bug reported:

There are a number of scripts in /etc/xen/scripts (e.g. vif-bridge, vif-
nat, c) that use 'eth0' as a default interface when one isn't provided.

That's good and useful when it's the correct choice-- and for me, prior
to Quantal, it was. But then biosdevname came along and renamed my
PowerEdge servers' nics em1 and em2, violating these scripts'
implicit assumptions about interface names.

Since the biosdevname behavior isn't going to change (I gather?), these
scripts should be fixed to make a more reasonable assumption on systems
like mine.

Re: [Bug 1082728] Re: The Glib library has bugs that affect Thunderbird

2012-12-02 Thread Saul Lubkin
Hmmm...

Dear Philip,

So it actually is a bug in Ubuntu Thunderbird -- Thunderbird has problems
running zimbra email.

Also, the messages almost definitely have to do with the lag that i am
seeing -- they occur at exactly the same time.

Only one thing wrong with that: Thunderbird on my wife's Windows computer
has no trouble with exactly the same zimbra mail account.
So, if the bug is in Thunderbird, then it's only in Ubuntu Thunderbird.

Nikki thought that it was a bug in Ubuntu's Glib. She directed me to
emails indicating a similar problem with Firefox and Ubuntu glib -- but
that's been fixed.

Re: [Bug 1082728] Re: The Glib library has bugs that affect Thunderbird

2012-11-30 Thread Saul Lubkin
Initially this was a question that I posed on Launchpad. I was asked to
put the content of .xsessionssomething into a pastebin, as well as the
output in a terminal when I started Thunderbird in the terminal. The
output in the terminal had the error messages for Glib calls. Nikki from
Ubuntu Launchpad told me to close the case with this solved my problem,
and to make a bug report about the Glib problem.

I have.

BTW, there appears to be a new version of Ubuntu. How can I upgrade to
that? Maybe that will solve the problem?

Re: [Bug 1082728] Re: The Glib library has bugs that affect Thunderbird

2012-11-30 Thread Saul Lubkin
I just downloaded the new version of ubuntu. (BTW, i have loads of spare
memory and disk space). I started Thunderbird in a terminal. Here's what
shows in the terminal when I double click on an item; and then I double
clicked on another item:

saul@NullA:~$ thunderbird

(thunderbird:3175): GLib-GObject-WARNING **:
/build/buildd/glib2.0-2.32.3/./gobject/gsignal.c:3393: signal name

/build/buildd/glib2.0-2.32.3/./gobject/gsignal.c:3393: signal name
`selection_changed' is invalid for instance `0x88d090a0'

According to Nikki (and it seems very believable to me), this is the source
of the bug in Thunderbird -- actually a bug in Glib. (I was hoping it
would be fixed in the new version of Ubuntu -- but, no change).

Balsa mail works perfectly.

(Also, I should note: Thunderbird has no trouble with my gmail account.
The problems occur with my zimbra mail account (my business email:
z.rochester.edu))

Hope that you can hep,

[Bug 891681] Re: Scribus crashes due to Signal #6

2012-02-12 Thread Saul Krasinskas
Same here, can't open Scribus (stable Scribus Version 1.4.0.rc3
27 March 2011 Build ID: C-C-T-F-C1.10.2 Using Ghostscript version 9.04 on
Ubuntu 11.10) as normal user, get error message Scribus crashes due to signal
#6 (exactly like the screenshot in John Janney's post above), and Scribus then
closes if I click OK on the error message. But I'm able to open and use Scribus
if I run gksudo scribus from the terminal.

[Bug 855269] Re: Could not install linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic during upgrade to 11.04

/dist-upgrade. The update-manager says my system may be in an unusable
state upon reboot, so I'm about to find out if that's true.

[Bug 855269] Re: Could not install linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic during upgrade to 11.04

2011-11-27 Thread Saul Tobin
After closing the update-manager, I attempted to run:

sudo apt-get purge linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic
sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic

This gave me a lengthy error that suggested there was not enough space
to install. It turns out my /boot partition was full, so I removed some
old linux-image packages and ran:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic
sudo dpgk-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic

This appeared to be successful. I will now reboot and see if it actually
was. Assuming it works, it would appear that the bug is the update-
manager not checking if there is enough space in a separate /boot
partition. The update-manager noticed there wasn't enough space in / and
aborted, but it apparently doesn't check for multi-partition schemes.

2011-11-27 Thread Saul Tobin
Reboot successful. At least in my case, the error was caused by not
enough space in my /boot partition. update-manager should check for
space in all the partitions it will write to, not just /.

[Bug 705680] [NEW] 11.04 installer fails on console-setup

2011-01-20 Thread Saul Reynolds-Haertle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I attempted to install the Natty Alpha 1 from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/natty/alpha-1/ on an x86 virtual
machine (VirtualBox 4.0.0 r69151). The Natty installer had enough memory
and hard disk space, and it had internet connectivity. I checked both
Download updates while installing and Install this third-party
software.

A bit more than halfway through, it reported that the console-setup
package failed to install. It instructed me to file a bug here, and then
attempted and failed to continue. The dialog box ended in include the
following detail in your bug report, but there didn't seem to be
anything there.

Note: I can move the lsb_release and apt-cache policy to the description
if that's cleaner.

Can confirm the problem - the latest drivers in Maverick (260.19.06 and
260.19.12) are unusable on Sony Vaio VPCF12S1E, giving a black screen.
The 256.xx drivers work fine, thank you for the link, otherwise my
laptop would be useless, since Nouveau crashes.
