I have the same problem on a HP DV5 1222Tx. I tried an upgrade to 9.04 beta but the problem is still there. So it seems that there is a file extension for folders that is being hijacked by the installation / upgrade of other packages such as VLC, gthumb, totem, amarok, kaffeine, Konqueror, Archiver Manager.
