I have the same problem on a HP DV5 1222Tx. I tried an upgrade to 9.04 beta but the problem is still there. I do not believe that the package 'gnome-panel' is necessarily at fault, but don't have a clue where the root cause is as I don't understand how the places menu works, however Tuomas Aavikko's workaround gave me success in fixing the issue: Right click on a folder in nautilus -Open with app- File Manager Now I can open my home folder from the places menu again. So it seems that there is a file extension for folders that is being hijacked by the installation / upgrade of other packages such as VLC, gthumb, totem, amarok, kaffeine, Konqueror, Archiver Manager.
