[Bug 1829949] [NEW] simple-scan fails to warm up the scanner
Public bug reported: as reported here: https://askubuntu.com/q/880880/80483 simple-scan sees the USB-powered scanner (CanoScan LiDE 110) but sometimes fails to start it up. Usually it scans the first page in several "tries", i.e., the "scanning noise" comes out in bursts, interrupted by short pauses, and then scans the page. The second and further pages are scanned in a single burst of "scanning noise". However, sometimes, I get a very short burst of noise and then an error message. When I connect the scanner to a mac laptop, it pauses with the "warming up the scanner" message and then scans the page. When I immediately re-connect the scanner to Ubuntu, simple-scan works just fine. Is there a way to teach simple-scan to "try harder" when warming up the scanner? Changing cables and USB ports does not help. Sometimes pluging the scanner into the usb2 socket and leave it alone for a few minutes helps... [Bug 1806797] Re: Frozen (black) screen on resume/unlock
When I try `Ubuntu on Wayland`, the behavior is, indeed, different. After disconnecting HDMI, the system never suspends (so I cannot reproduce the problematic behavior), even when I close the lid. However, `tmux` hangs and loadavg stays at 1. After I `kill -9` tmux and force suspend using the power button, I can login fine. Thus it appears that the problem is not reproducible on Wayland -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1806797 Title: Frozen (black) screen on resume/unlock To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1806797/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1806797] [NEW] Xorg freeze
Public bug reported: I have a monitor to which I connect using an HDMI cable. While connected, I have 2 displays and I can use both fine. When I disconnect, it is also fine, until I close the laptop or it goes to sleep. When it wakes up, I get the unlock/login screen, and I can login fine as anyone but myself. When I login as myself (i.e., unlock the screen rather than login), I get a completely black screen. I can get the login/unlock screen back using Ctrl-Alt-F1, and repeat an attempt to unlock with the same result - black screen. My only options appears to be reboot or kill the X server from the console (Ctrl-Alt-F2, login and kill). This started to happen recently (a month?) [Bug 1560719] [NEW] canon lide does not scan the bottom of the page in text mode
Public bug reported: When I scan a page in text mode, only the top 70-80% of the page is scanned (regardless of page settings; my paper is letter size, the page setting is letter, but the same result happens with a4 & legal). [Bug 230102]
(In reply to shifuimam from comment #204) Firefox, as has been mentioned multiple times, used to confirm on quit. That part is key - the functionality was removed, versus never being there in the first place. Hence, the program is no longer behaving as expected. Alas, strictly speaking, after 6 years, the program is behaving in the poor but expected manner. :-( A fix to this bug would be an unexpected improvement. :-) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/230102 Title: No warning when closing multiple tabs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/firefox/+bug/230102/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 230102]
(In reply to shifuimam from comment #202) The default keyboard shortcut for quitting any application in OS X is Cmd+Q. The default keyboard shortcut in Firefox and other browsers to close a single tab is Cmd+W. The Q and W keys are directly next to each other on a standard QWERTY keyboard. Consequently, it is very easy to fat-finger the shortcut to close a tab and end up quitting the browser instead. To be fair, this is a problem for _all_ mac os apps. Cmd+W closes windows/tabs in all apps, and none of them asks for a confirmation on Cmd+Q. However, in all other apps accidental quitting is not a big deal. Your arguments as to why this isn't viable have, so far, been completely subjective and provide no technological reason ... Hear! This discussion reminds me of the stubborn refusal of google contacts to support the iso 8601 date format (-MM-DD). (In reply to Mike Connor [:mconnor] from comment #189) WONTFIX is probably closest to the mark, but this is working as designed. Not everyone will agree with the design, that's fine, but six years down the road I don't see any compelling rationale for changing this behaviour for the majority of users. People are unhappy about the behavior - just look at the number of dupes, votes, and the size of the CC list. For every person taking the trouble to report the bug, untold thousands are cursing you under their breath. C-q should be protected by a warning. No other major browser - Opera or Chrome - has the obnoxious behavior of dying on a typo (wiping the sessions and downloads). I will note that browser.warnOnQuit is perhaps misnamed, as the only functionality it is intended to cover is ... Specifically, when I click on the NM menu in the top menu bar (between bluetooth and sound volume), I see the usual items (wired network/disconnect/wireless network/disconnected/hot spot 1/hot spot 2/.../connecto to hidden/create new/vpn/enable/info/edit); and the list of the available wifi hot spots changes with time and they become (un)available. when I plug in a wired connection, I become connected to the internet and this is reflected in the menu too. however, nothing I do with the menu has any effect: I cannot disable/enable wireless/networking; I cannot select the hot spot to connect to c c c. The only thing I can do it kill the NM process which is then auto- restarted. I tried reinstalling all the network-manager-* packages to no effect. [Bug 985661] Re: High load average
top does __NOT__ explain the loadavg (if it did, I would not have complained): non-0 CPU users account to 10-15% at most. (this, however, is absurd in itself! why does compiz take 3-4% of CPU on a 2.7GHz system when twm/fvwm/gwm/scwm never took more than 1% on a 200MHz system?!) moreover, top __CANNOT__ always explain loadavg. (e.g., `ls /mnt/foo` will be at 1 loadavg if /mnt/foo is NFS-mounted and the server is down). The load average code runs in the heart of the kernel, and it doesn't know anything other than if a CPU is in use or not busy at the 5 second sample time. first of all, loadavg is not about CPU: the number of processes in the system run queue averaged over various periods of time. there should be a way to get __WHICH__ processes occupied the the system run queue, in addition to _how many_ of them. otherwise this loadavg metric is next to useless to the users, even if the developers are convinced that it is correct in some way. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/985661 Title: High load average To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xubuntu-desktop/+bug/985661/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 985661] Re: High load average
When the computer is idle, load should be 0. This is the source of its usefulness. I.e., non-0 loadavg means that either the comp is thrashing, or backup is running, or R is partitioning a graph, or emacs is being compiled or a file db is being rebuilt or normal ui operation (editing a file, browsing the web c) should not affect loadavg. this is precisely the usefulness of loadavg: it tells me that the computer is busy, and, unless I know it is busy because I told it to do something, I should investigate: maybe a virus is trying to break into the NSA :-) right now my loadavg is at 1.3 while only one single-threaded computation is running. This is wrong. It would be nice if there were a tool which would tell me that the loadavg consists of. e.g.: loadavg=4.2 = 1 from R + 1.5 from Matlab + 1.0 from gcc + 0.7 from a no-longer-available NFS-mounted FS. it is alleged that atop is supposed to be able to do that, but even its adepts have not been able to produce such a split reliably.
