[Bug 811604] Re: uvcdynctrl spams uvcdynctrl-udev.log and fills up filesystem

2021-03-03 Thread stef
My system also stops working a while after connecting a webcam.

As this problem only shows up on some system, I found purging the packet
"uvcdynctrl" solves the problem for me.
Up to now I see no side effects, as the webcam anyway seams to be unsupported
by uvcdynctrl. The camera works in both cases.

[Bug 1681028] [NEW] glade 3.18.3 (ubuntu 16) huge memory leak

2017-04-07 Thread stef de guy
Public bug reported:

Creating a window, adding some widgets, ie. toggle button, a viewport ..
then for example on the viewport (or even on the main window ) widget, select
'signals' and develop the "GtkWidget>" to show all the signals ...
immediately, the memory usage of the computer starts growing very fast, leading
to an unstable system ( 4GB ram full , starting to swap, after a few minutes,
if you leave glade at this state of displaying the signals listing )
it stops right when minimizing back the "GtkWidget->" signals section.
For what i've been testing, the memory leak happens for every widget's
signals->Gtkwidget-> display.

[Bug 1124250] Re: Partially incorrect uid mapping with nfs4/idmapd/ldap-auth

2015-05-04 Thread stef
Dariusz:
Today the problem has occurred again:
sudo cat /proc/key-users
0:65 64/64 58/200 810/2
and the /var/mail folder was hit in this case.
After a while (about 1 hour) the problem diminishes with the following
key-users result:
   0:21 20/20 14/200 194/2
As I don´t understand the meaning of this values, I don´t know what values I
should use.
We have a ldap/krb5 setup with 30 users and 15 groups.
The kernel was

[Bug 1124250] Re: Partially incorrect uid mapping with nfs4/idmapd/ldap-auth

2015-04-24 Thread stef
I have tried yesterday the image linux-image-3.13.0-51-generic for Precise
(linux-signed-image-generic-lts-trusty 3.13.0.51.44).
With no luck. I have again after some time the userid 4294967294 in shown for a
lot of files and users.
So the problem seams unfixed for me.

Is there also a linux-image-generic-lts-trusty (for 12.04LTS )test kernel
available?

2015-03-02 Thread stef
@Dariusz: As I have similar problems with the HWE-Kernel of trusty for my
precise installation, is it possible for ayou to build the fixed kernel also
for trusty?
Or is there a plan to include the patch in the official trusty kernel?

I have tried your trusty-kernel, but I was not able to load the nvidia-331
kernel module, as there where some drm-related (drm_open etc.)symbols missing...
Stef.

[Bug 1383223] [NEW] nfs4 krb5

2014-10-20 Thread stef
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading 12.04 to 3.13. series kernels I have severe problems with my
nfs4 mounts:
dmesg states a lot of audit messages like
type=1702 audit(1413796772.963:54): op=linkat ppid=10428 pid=11265
auid=4294967295 uid=1001 gid=1001 euid=1001 suid=1001 fsuid=1001 egid=1001
sgid=8 fsgid=1001 tty=(none) ses=4294967295 comm=lockfile
exe=/usr/bin/lockfile res=0
and
type=1302 audit(1413796772.963:55): item=0 name=/var/mail/_BwC.kONRUB.xxx
inode=737698 dev=00:18 mode=0100444 ouid=4294967294 ogid=4294967294 rdev=00:00
nametype=NORMAL
When looking in the nfs4-mounted directory, I see this files also with the
wrong uid/gid of 4294967294:
 ls -l /var/mail/_*
-r--r--r-- 1 4294967294 4294967294 1 Oct 20 11:06 /var/mail/_0mC.RCNRUB.
-r--r--r-- 1 4294967294 4294967294 1 Oct 20 11:19 /var/mail/_2vC.aONRUB.
-r--r--r-- 1 4294967294 4294967294 1 Oct 20 11:19 /var/mail/_BwC.kONRUB.

After some segfaults of Browser[] like:
dmesg:
Browser[11989]: segfault at 0 ip 7f3368b4935c sp 7fff16ef41c0 error 6
in libmozalloc.so[7f3368b48000+2000]

the system resumes normal operation and ls shows again
ls -l /var/mail/_*
-r--r--r-- 1 myuid mygid 1 Oct 20 11:06 /var/mail/_0mC.RCNRUB.
-r--r--r-- 1 myuid mygid 1 Oct 20 11:19 /var/mail/_2vC.aONRUB.
-r--r--r-- 1 myuid mygid 1 Oct 20 11:19 /var/mail/_BwC.kONRUB.

The files system is mounted with nfsv4/krb5/ldap.

When this messages appear, the locking of the mail-file is not possible.

Using linux-3.11 does not show this behavior.

Best regards,
Stef

[Bug 998285] Re: Tapping alt-tab switches between windows of the same application sometimes

2013-12-06 Thread stef
This issue creeped up on me in 13.10. It's SPER
annoying!!

Let me explain. It's the inconsistency that's the problem. It took me
several month to even conceptionalize why I am subliminally irritated by
Unity. I use alt-tab and alt-backtick all the time to navigate between
apps and windows. For the most part it works well but after a alt-
backtick the behavior of alt-tab changes. Even after month this is never
what I expect. It's subjectively totally erratic. When I press alt-tab I
always want the previous app. I have this intention a lot. I need a
get me to the previous app key, not a sure back to previous app in
most of the cases key.

I get the idea of focusing on the last window no matter what app it was
from. This feature may be a ok o the alt-backtick key. It actually
makes a lot of sense there because I almost neve switch between windows
of the same app after switching the app. For this reason take me to the
last window feature would usually not interfer with what I expect the
button does.

I think way more people would complain about this if it wasn't sucha
subliminal annoyance.

[Bug 41179]

2013-08-08 Thread 9-stef
Hey guys, just wanted to give a heads up here...

I gave a talk at GUADEC which presented an alternate password storage
model, where the secret service provides a master key to apps (like
firefox) via standard interfaces like the linux kernel keyring. Apps can
use this key to encrypt their own password storage database.

The above works well in the case of sandboxing. I think it also fits
really well within the firefox model. You don't have to worry about
things like async access for each password to another daemon.

I feel bad posting this here without more details, but over the next few
days I'm going to clean up my slides, and do some blog posts about this.

You can see a bit of history here:

[Bug 1171573] Re: python-pyepl does not run with ImportError: /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/pyepl/hardware/sound/_eplSound.so: undefined symbol: snd_pcm_hw_params_set_channels

2013-05-16 Thread Stef
From what I could find on the internet, the problem lies in an old
python statement in pyEPL (audio part) that doesn't work anymore in
Python 2.7 (and up?).

I used an ugly hack to get around the problem, at least for me (I don't need
audio for the experiment).
There was some problem with the Audio part of pyEPL, so ... I commented it out
:P

Run your python program with EPL and you probably get a list of file_...
imports ... from file_...
Go to the last one and comment out that sound related line of code.
It takes a bit of time to comment everything out, because every compile gives a
next error, but it won't take forever.

It's ugly, but it's a quick fix ^^

Note: you need sudo right to edit the .py files which are likely in
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/pyepl

p.s. If I have to do this another time I will put here in which files,
which lines you have to comment out ;)

So an other possibility is, that longer delay of dhcpclient cause the

The handling of both ifupdown and network-manager is designed such that
the interface should not be considered 'up' until dhclient succeeds. If
'sudo initctl list' is showing the interface as up in this case, then
that's a bug; more likely, however, the interface is either still
waiting for a dhcp answer or is considered failed, and bringing up the
interface will bring up the NFS mounts as well. Either way, that's
obviously not a bug in the NFS packages, since if the network has no
 address NFS can't work.
This problem is not on a nfs machine. At the moment I have solved this problem
with a broadcom addon card, which works more reliable than the built in Intel
card. Maybe this is a e1000 driver issue.

Is there a possibility to restart dhcpclient in case of a unsuccessful
  inquiry.

 ifdown eth0; ifup eth0

Please let us know if you find that the new version of the upstart jobs
solves the nfs problem (but not the network problem, obviously). If it
does, that strengthens the argument for pushing this fix as a stable
 release update to 12.04.

Until now your new upstart scripts seams to work ok.
I have not been able to reproduce the boot hang in about 10 starts, but a
hot-boot was already successful most times.
But my 2 test users have not reported any problems this week (2 coldboots
until now). I will report you the long term results end of the week.

Re: [Bug 1167337] Re: nfs4 mounts hang in bootup with upstart starting rpc.gssd

2013-04-18 Thread stef
Hi Steve,
I have tested your scripts some times on one problematic machine.
So far the boots have not failed. But in one test with the old setup the eth0
interface was not started with IP address. So this may be also a reason for
the failing boot. In this case the interface was up but has no IP adress.
after manual issuing dhcpclient, the network was working.
By the way, this problem do I have at the moment also on my home machine
(without nfs/krb5 etc.)
So an other possibility is, that longer delay of dhcpclient cause the problem
for mounting the nfs-fs.
But in one earlier test, I have had a running network, started gssd and no
valid credential for mounting the share. May be this is caused by an other
race condition. I have since that event hanged the default lifetime for /tmp
files from 0 to 2 days, as one idea was the removal of the /tmp/krb_machine
credential during boot after krb5 handshake

So I will let your scripts installed on this machine and have a look on the
network connection.
Is there a possibility to restart dhcpclient in case of a unsuccessful
inquiry.

Possible. You could test without that option to see if it affects the boot
 behavior?

Please also test the upstart jobs from 13.04 (linked from my previous
comment). While these changes don't cause gssd to wait for rpcbind, they
do fix various other low-probability race conditions, one of which might be
the root cause of your problem.

Re: [Bug 1167337] Re: nfs4 mounts hang in bootup with upstart starting rpc.gssd

2013-04-17 Thread stef
Where can I find this 2 upstart files?

I have also tested a sleep of 10 sec before starting rpc.gssd, which also
helps to solve the problem mostly.

The problem here was a started rpc.gssd with wrong or no credentials (missing
network connection at start of rpc.gssd).(mount was denied by server). I than
have no /tmp/krb5cc_machine_* credential.
In about 50% of boots the mounts work, in 50% not. This also depends on the
hardware of the machine, as the time for the network-start-up influences the
rpc.gssd startup.
On some machines there is no Problem at all (maybe one in 30 boots) but other
machines results in 50% boot failed.

In the boot failed situations only a manual restart of rpc.gssd solves the
mount denied situation. (here you have to press S very fast, as after some
time the machine ignores the S-key and the system hangs)

The problem may also arise in ignoring the _netdev option in the fstab file.
So mounting network filesystems without network connection is not a very good
idea at all, because it will never work.

On Tuesday 16 April 2013, Steve Langasek wrote:
So while there have been updates to the gssd job in later releases,
these updates were to change the job so that it does not depend on
portmap *at all*. The rationale is that gssd is not actually supposed
to need to talk to rpcbind... and this is true of the version in 12.04
 as well.

And in any case, even when there was a dependency on portmap, this was
only supposed to ever have been relevant for NFSv3, not for NFSv4.

So I don't see how rpc.gssd starting before portmap was actually causing
this problem for you. Could you try installing the /etc/init/gssd.conf
and /etc/init/gssd-mounting.conf jobs from Ubuntu 12.10, to see if the
 problem persists?

May be a additional flag -e has some influence?
I use this flag to prevent gssd from blocking the entire system when an users
krb-credential has expired to restore the old behavior.
This was needed since OpenSuse 11.4 and also for Ubuntu 12.04. (due to some
changes in the kernel as I remember.)

[Bug 1167337] [NEW] nfs4 mounts hang in bootup with upstart starting rpc.gssd

2013-04-10 Thread stef
Public bug reported:

System 12.04.2 32 and 64bit. nfs4 with krb5/ldap authentication.
No network-manager!

A nfs4 mount results in a system hang, if rpc.gssd is started before rpcbind
(portmap) and the filesystem is defined as:
nfs4sec=krb5
in /etc/init/gssd.conf the start condition is
   start on (started portmap
  or mounting TYPE=nfs4 OPTIONS=*sec*krb5*)

So when the file system is defined as: nfs4 sec=krb5
upstart does not wait on portmap (rpcbind) and starts sometimes rpc.gssd before
rpcbind. This lead to mounting errors and prevents the further bootup.

My solution at the moment is to define the file systems as:
... nfs vers=4,sec=krb5...

which works at the moment.
(I have also added
NEED_GSSD=yes
NEED_IDMAPD=yes
to /etc/defaults/nfs-common

2013-02-01 Thread stef
Is the Importance Wishlist only kidding or do you mean this seriously?
I have changed over from opensuse to ubuntu lts be course of the long term
service.
And now I must realize, that my systems are using acroread 9.4.7 from
10/5/2011???
I have realized this, as my last opensuse systems are updated to 9.5.3 today.
So I would vote for urgent repair
Thanks.

[Bug 664608] Re: simple-scan crashes when saving to PDF

2012-02-29 Thread Stef Walter
Added the attached printfs. Here's the output:

** WARNING **: scanner.vala:1204: Scan completed with 1584 lines, expected 2250
lines
allocated: data_length = 711000, height = 2250, width = 1264

Aborted (core dumped)

This is a buffer overrun by one byte. You can see clearly that all the
other color depths (besides DeviceGray) add an extra byte to account for
this overflow. Only the DeviceGray one does not, adding one to the
data_length calculations for DeviceGray fixes the problem.

Please let me know if you want any other printfs or information in
specific places.

[Bug 780069] [NEW] Banshee applet not updating current song

2011-05-09 Thread Stef Reeves
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

When I play a playlist of songs on Banshee (2.0) the applet in the top
right corner (Ubuntu 11.04) will sometimes display the incorrect song
rather than the song which is actually being played. When I press the
next track or previous track buttons on either Banshee or my
keyboard the applet will always show the correct song which is being
played. However, if I leave a playlist to play through the songs the
applet will display the previous song which was played and not the
current one. It will always lag behind by one song until I manually
change song which seems to correct it up until it automatically changes
song again. This doesn't affect the notification pop-up which is always
displayed correctly.

No. It wasn't installed.

I installed indicator-sound, and readded Indicator Applet to the panel,
and now I see the volume. Thanks.

[Bug 642879] Re: Thunderbird window does not remember size between instances

2010-09-20 Thread Stef Walter
Hmmm, I think the size is limited to the smaller of my two monitors. I
have one large one on the left, my primary monitor, and a smaller one on
the right. I use thunderbird on the large monitor, and it starts up each
time on the large monitor (correctly).

However it seems, its size is limited on startup to the exact size of
the smaller of my two monitors, and I have to make it larger each time i
run the program.

[Bug 642872] [NEW] No volume control in panel

2010-09-19 Thread Stef Walter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Ever since upgrading from 9.10 to 10.4 and now to 10.10 alpha, there is
no volume control in the GNOME panel. There doesn't seem to be a way to
add it. Volume control is not listed in the 'Add to panel' dialog.

My sound works perfectly, and the volume control buttons on the keyboard
work.

[Bug 642879] [NEW] Thunderbird window does not remember size between instances

2010-09-19 Thread Stef Walter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Since upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 alpha each time I resize I run
thunderbird, I have to resize the window. It does not remember it's
size.

I use a wide thunderbird size, with the 'Vertical View' layout. Each
time thunderbird is started it's a narrow view with the vertical panels
squished together. In Ubuntu 10.4 thunderbird would remember its size
properly.

[Bug 568662] [NEW] Open windows and panels crash spontaniously

2010-04-22 Thread Stef
Public bug reported:

When I was working on my laptop suddenly all the panels (can't click on
them) and the open windows (can't resize them, nor type in them) stopped
responding. I've had this twice before now. I now have Ubuntu 10.04
running. On my previous installed version (Karmic) everything worked
fine.

The solution so far is closing the laptops lid, let it go in stand-by
mode, and then open the lid.

Hi Bret,

thanks for your answer.

The second part about /home will be fixed in Lucid, so I can wait a bit
more.

But for the first one, I can't get it working, so, I tried you workaround
in PXE conf but no way, it doesn't work for me for a fresh 9.10 i386
desktop install.

I hope it will be fixed on Lucid, I think it worth it on a LTS version.

Cheers.

Hi Bret,

I've tried all the tricks purposed in bug 452686, without any success. :-(
On both side, /etc/fstab or pxelinux.cfg/default .

No way, I still with mounting the root as nfs partition instead of
rootfs.

If I try to enable /home in /etc/fstab as nfs the boot process get stuck
(waiting to mount).

I'd like to remind my 9.04 works perfectly on same server.

May you give me your pxeconf and fstab for your 9.10, to give a try?

Is hal9000 the same machine as 192.168.101.199? If not the same

[Bug 496623] [NEW] nfsroot not working anymore in 9.10

2009-12-14 Thread SteF
Public bug reported:

After trying to run correctly a PXE/NFSroot Ubuntu 9.10 I gave up.

Until now, it was running fine with other Ubuntu version 8.04, 8.10,
9.04, but now I'm not able to mount automatically /home anymore, and the
root fs is mounted on ip_server:/home/nfsroot/ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386
instead of /dev/nfs.

I follow the same procedure
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DisklessUbuntuHowto) as before for
booting by PXE the Ubuntu 9.10, and installing the system by NFS, but no
way to get rid of it.

My old 9.04 stills work fine with the same server, and same target (PXE
client).

Something change in the init procedure from 9.04 to 9.10, but I not able
to find out what.

If somebody is interested in resolving it, I can provide more details,
and reproduce it again.

[Bug 461744] [NEW] update-manager crashes on dist-upgrade

2009-10-27 Thread Stef Sijben
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Today I tried to upgrade my system from 9.04 to 9.10 RC via update-
manager -d. When I clicked the button for the dist-upgrade, I got the
release notes and then a dialog which sais it's downloading 2 files.
After that, update-manager just crashed, without any notice.

Steps to reproduce:
run update-manager -d
click the Upgrade button in the top right.
click Upgrade in the dialog showing the release notes.
enter your password when asked for it.

What should happen:
the system is upgraded to the new distribution release, or a proper error
message is shown.

What actually happens:
update-manager crashes.

When I run update-manager -d from the command line, this is the output:
$ update-manager -d
extracting 'karmic.tar.gz'
authenticate 'karmic.tar.gz' against 'karmic.tar.gz.gpg'
/var/lib/python-support/python2.6/dbus/connection.py:242: DeprecationWarning:
object.__init__() takes no parameters
  super(Connection, self).__init__(*args, **kwargs)
sudo: unable to execute /tmp/tmpx8L0A4/karmic: Permission denied

Since it said something about permissions, I also tried to run it as root
directly from the command line instead of entering my password when
update-manager asks for it. This is the output:
$ sudo update-manager -d
extracting 'karmic.tar.gz'
authenticate 'karmic.tar.gz' against 'karmic.tar.gz.gpg'
/var/lib/python-support/python2.6/dbus/connection.py:242: DeprecationWarning:
object.__init__() takes no parameters
  super(Connection, self).__init__(*args, **kwargs)
/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/UpdateManager/DistUpgradeFetcher.py:79:
GtkWarning: gtk_scrolled_window_add: assertion `bin-child == NULL' failed
  self.parent.scrolled_notes.add(textview_release_notes)
extracting 'karmic.tar.gz'
authenticate 'karmic.tar.gz' against 'karmic.tar.gz.gpg'

But now I also got an error message in the GUI:
Can not run the upgrade
This usually is caused by a system were /tmp is mounted noexec. Please remount
without noexec and run the upgrade again.

This error message is right, I do have /tmp mounted with noexec. The
problem is that it doesn't show up when I don't run update-manager as
root, so many users will not know what's the problem when their upgrade
fails.

[Bug 67226] Re: [jaunty] Firefox 3.5 and openoffice do not stick to antialiasing render settings

2009-10-14 Thread Stef Walter
For me, the OpenOffice fonts are not kerned properly. The letters run
into each other. BTW, these are the fonts in the chrome, not the
document. However they are no longer blurry like Firefox. I remember
that OpenOffice fonts used to be blury around the time that this ticket
was opened.

If screenshots are desired, I'll post them. Please let me know.

I was directed to upload the screenshot by Chris:
