[Bug 1396760] Re: ca-certificates-java doesn't create /etc/ssl/certs/java/cacerts

2017-08-29 Thread stevenschlansker
We bring in Java 8 from openjdk-r. Not having supported Java 8 in
Trusty is one of our other huge gripes, and arguably the fact that it's
not integrated and tested but you have to use a PPA instead is part of
why these problems don't get found until users try to use the software
:)

[Bug 1706442] Re: please add support for openjdk-8

2017-07-26 Thread stevenschlansker
Independent of the "Java is completely broken" issue, I do think the
originally stated case of "ca-certificate-java should support openjdk-8"
is still totally valid. Installing this package seems to bring in java
7 even when you already have 8 installed.

The current situation is pretty ridiculous. Java 7 is EOL and not
useful to the majority of users of the most popular languages on the
planet. Java 8 is only available via an unsupported PPA, and any
attempt to get support (either here, or on the PPA, or via the request
process to get Java 8 added to Trusty) has simply failed.

I hate being that guy whining on the bug tracker, but Ubuntu is really
dropping the ball on this one. Just look at the request for an official
Java 8 packaging: https://bugs.launchpad.net/trusty-
backports/+bug/1368094 with 750 "+1"s.

The community is trying to work with Ubuntu to highlight this and get it
fixed, but every attempt either gets ignored or closed as invalid...

[Bug 1706442] Re: please add support for openjdk-8

2017-07-26 Thread stevenschlansker
We're also finding that we cannot install Java 8 on Trusty anymore. One
other thing I noted is that the openjdk-8 package seems to have a
'Breaks: ' directive for older versions of ca-certificates-java,
including this version.

This is a really serious issue for us, and this is not the first time
Java support on Ubuntu LTS has broken in really bad ways that makes me
wonder what sort of testing and validation these packages go through :/

[Bug 1306991] Re: pip stops with ImportError for request-Modul

2016-03-02 Thread stevenschlansker
We rolled out a new pip package to all our systems this morning. Since
it happened to pull in a new requests library, we now are the proud
owners of approximately 50 hosts with completely broken pip installs.
Exact same problem described here.

How does a bug this serious persist in a LTS release for two years,
without even being triaged or assigned a priority?!?!

[Bug 1328975] Re: libc6: getaddrinfo() sends DNS queries to random file descriptors

2015-09-11 Thread stevenschlansker
It looks like the bug may actually be fixed in trusty-security eglibc
2.19-0ubuntu6.6

eglibc (2.19-0ubuntu6.6) trusty-security; urgency=medium

  * SECURITY UPDATE: getaddrinfo writes to random file descriptors under
high load
- debian/patches/any/cvs-resolv-reuse-fd.diff: reload file descriptor
  after calling reopen in resolv/res_send.c.
- CVE-2013-7423

So this bug status is misleading; the issue should be fixed against
Trusty I believe.

I too cannot understand why this fix was refused to backport to trusty.
We just spent two man-weeks tracking down this issue in one of our
applications, and to find that a severe race condition in libc was fixed
in Debian over a year ago but still not fixed in a *long term supported*
version of Ubuntu is ... frustrating, to put it lightly.

they are installing a supported version are actually silently getting an

[Bug 1310292] Re: installing `ruby2.0` results in ruby 1.9.3-p484 as default version

2015-04-06 Thread stevenschlansker
Here is our workaround which should be better than the ones proposed
above (doesn't get wiped out by package upgrade / reinstall)

# Rename original out of the way, so updates / reinstalls don't squash our hack
fix
dpkg-divert --add --rename --divert /usr/bin/ruby.divert /usr/bin/ruby
dpkg-divert --add --rename --divert /usr/bin/gem.divert /usr/bin/gem
# Create an alternatives entry pointing ruby - ruby2.0
update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/ruby ruby /usr/bin/ruby2.0 1
update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/gem gem /usr/bin/gem2.0 1

Can we get this issue re-evaluated / re-opened? IMO the Won't Fix
assessment was premature, especially in the context of Ruby 1.9 being
unsupported.

I just stumbled on this, and if the Ubuntu team will close such obvious
problems with Won't fix for a LTS release, they should IMO just be up
front that it is not supported and remove Ruby packaging entirely.
Leaving totally broken packages in doesn't help anyone.

[Bug 1341628] Re: [needs-packaging]openjdk-8 in 14.04

2014-10-31 Thread stevenschlansker
The lack of a openjdk8 package makes it very difficult to install any
Java packages via apt, as they all end up depending on something like
'java7-runtime-headless | java6-runtime-headless'. So you end up having
two different JDK installations just because of the lack of e.g. 'java8
-runtime-headless' pointing at an openjdk8.

[Bug 1309288] [NEW] docker.io requires apparmor but package does not depend on it

2014-04-17 Thread stevenschlansker
Public bug reported:

If you install ubuntu-minimal, apparmor is not installed.

If you then try to use docker, any attempt to launch one fails with:

root@ip-10-70-7-210:~# docker run busybox /bin/echo hi
2014/04/18 01:10:15 no such file or directory

once you:

root@ip-10-70-7-210:~# apt-get install apparmor apparmor-profiles

it then works:

root@ip-10-70-7-210:~# docker run busybox /bin/echo hi
2014/04/18 01:10:15 no such file or directory

This is tracked upstream as:

https://github.com/dotcloud/docker/issues/4734

but seems to be un-resolved.

Tested on 14.04 LTS

[Bug 1308796] Re: Bad page map in openjdk-7

2014-04-17 Thread stevenschlansker
Apport does not seem to want to collect another report -- I chose to
send report but nothing is appearing in this bug :(

If you would like additional files let me know and I can collect them by
hand.

[Bug 1308796] Re: Bad page map in openjdk-7

2014-04-17 Thread stevenschlansker
Sorry, the above were accidentally collected as duplicates.

I am now running Linux ip-10-70-6-145 3.15.0-031500rc1-generic

reproduce is just running 'jps':

[Bug 1309288] [NEW] docker.io requires apparmor but package does not depend on it

2014-04-17 Thread stevenschlansker
Public bug reported:

If you install ubuntu-minimal, apparmor is not installed.

If you then try to use docker, any attempt to launch one fails with:

root@ip-10-70-7-210:~# docker run busybox /bin/echo hi
2014/04/18 01:10:15 no such file or directory

once you:

root@ip-10-70-7-210:~# apt-get install apparmor apparmor-profiles

it then works:

root@ip-10-70-7-210:~# docker run busybox /bin/echo hi
2014/04/18 01:10:15 no such file or directory

This is tracked upstream as:

https://github.com/dotcloud/docker/issues/4734

but seems to be un-resolved.

Tested on 14.04 LTS

** Affects: docker.io (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 73457] Re: MASTER Firefox is already running, but is not responding when /home is an NFS directory

2008-12-14 Thread stevenschlansker
However, mounting everything nolock is definitely not a long term
solution... is anyone taking a look at this issue? Is this bug
something that should be filed at Mozilla instead?

[Bug 73457] Re: MASTER Firefox is already running, but is not responding when /home is an NFS directory

2008-11-03 Thread stevenschlansker
I apologize for resurrecting this bug report from the dead, but I
anticipate that if I file a new report it will just be marked as a
duplicate of this one :)

I recently upgraded a few machines to Intrepid and am now experiencing this
problem. Same symptoms - 90% of the time firefox says it's already running or
refuses to start at all (no windows or anything). Firefox is already not
running. There's no stale lockfiles.
Remounting the NFS file system with nolock mitigates the problem, but that's
obviously not an acceptable long-term solution

Setup:

Client: Intrepid Ibex up-to-date amd64 with /home mounted NFS
Server: FreeBSD 7 with a UFS2 volume exported

Could someone confirm and/or reopen the bug?

I am very willing to help troubleshoot, but I'll need some guidance - I
don't know too much about NFS locking.

Thanks,
Steven Schlansker

It might be useful to indicate what hardware (esp. motherboard and video

[Bug 194029] Re: 2.6.24-8 Introduces Network Issue

2008-04-26 Thread stevenschlansker
Is it possible that this bug is affecting other applications too? I
occasionally (but not nearly as often) see similar behavior in Firefox -
it hangs for a few seconds and then eventually 'catches up' and goes
through all the keyboard/mouse movements in high speed (this is without
synergy installed, but the behavior seems similar)

I just introduced a friend of mine to Ubuntu and he's having the problem
too with other random applications.

[Bug 187265] [NEW] fsck: root primary superblock differs from backup immediately after install

2008-01-30 Thread stevenschlansker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: e2fsprogs

I did a fresh install into a 20G partition, checked the format box in
the manual partition editor on the Hardy Alpha 3 CD, and everything
installed fine. Rebooted, and it booted fine... until I hit fsck.

It then said that the root primary superblock features different from backup,
check forced
It then proceeded to fsck. At the end, it said fsck died with exit status 1
The system then proceeded to boot normally.

Seems to be harmless so far, but sure doesn't foster peace of mind :)

[Bug 187538] [NEW] Hardy installer changes all partition types to 83 (Linux)

2008-01-30 Thread stevenschlansker
Public bug reported:

I installed from Hardy Alpha 3 CD in a tri-boot configuration -
/dev/sda1 Windows XP
/dev/sda2 Hardy
/dev/sda3 Gutsy

After installation completed, I could no longer boot Windows. It gave a
message that autochk.exe could not be found. After tracking down the
problem via Googling, I found that /dev/sda1's partition type had
changed from 7 (HPFS/NTFS) to 83 (Linux)

I assume this is because of the installer, but I can not be absolutely
sure as I booted Hardy a few times before trying Windows again.

[Bug 60625] Re: Automatic interfaces not brought up on boot on edgy

2006-10-09 Thread stevenschlansker
My system soon after that decided to give up entirely, to the point
where there were more broken things than working. I decided to
reinstall from the latest edgy beta... sorry I can't do as you asked.
Maybe I just caught an unlucky combination of package versions that
conspired to wreck my system... the new install does not have this
problem. Thanks for your unfortunately unsuccessful help.

[Bug 60625] Re: Automatic interfaces not brought up on boot on edgy

2006-09-18 Thread stevenschlansker
Interesting. Looking at /etc/init.d/networking, it logs a message
saying Configuring network interfaces... and then runs ifup... But
maybe I'm just confused.

Anyway, here's ifconfig -a

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:8D:7E:90:D7
  BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
  RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
  TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
  collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
  RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
  Interrupt:217 Base address:0x4000

loLink encap:Local Loopback
  inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
  UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
  RX packets:40 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
  TX packets:40 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
  collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
  RX bytes:3552 (3.4 KiB) TX bytes:3552 (3.4 KiB)

And this is very strange - /etc/iftab seems to have disappeared. I know it
used to exist on the system; I remember editing it a few weeks ago. This
problem started happening when I dist-upgraded to edgy. If having that file
missing would cause this, maybe one of the packages accidentally deleted the
iftab file?

[Bug 60623] Upgrading mdadm package is impossible - can't upgrade while raid arrays active

2006-09-15 Thread stevenschlansker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mdadm

I've upgraded to edgy and just today-ish a new mdadm package came out.
I can't upgrade it, because /etc/init.d/mdadm-raid fails while trying to
stop /dev/md0 and /dev/md1. Trying to do a mdadm -S /dev/md0 fails as
well, even though it is not mounted and no processes (apparently) hold
it open - it fails with Device or resource busy.

I tried to boot into singleuser, and the same thing happens. Booting
with init=/bin/bash left me at the initramfs, where it was indeed
possible to mdadm -S the arrays but it was not possible to upgrade mdadm
(as I did not have the root fs mounted)

For some reason booting with the emergency kernel option doesn't seem
to work anymore, it does a normal boot instead.

A reboot -f does manage to reboot, although I imagine that this isn't
the preferred workaround.

Trying to halt does the same thing (rc0 killed by signal 15). halt -f works
fine.

[Bug 60626] Re: init: rc6 process (4517) killed by signal 15 when rebooting from singleuser

2006-09-15 Thread stevenschlansker
Whoops, sorry, brain fart there :p

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls /etc/event.d/
control-alt-delete rc0 rc0-poweroff rc2 rc4 rc6 rcS-sulogin tty1
tty3 tty5
rc-default rc0-halt rc1 rc3 rc5 rcS sulogin tty2
tty4 tty6
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /etc/event.d/rc0
# rc0 - runlevel 0 compatibility
#
# This task runs the old sysv-rc runlevel 0 (halt/poweroff) scripts with
# the decision as to whether to halt or power off the system left up to the
# script (and thus /etc/default/poweroff).

start on halt
start on runlevel-0

stop on shutdown
stop on runlevel-2
stop on runlevel-3
stop on runlevel-4
stop on runlevel-5

script
set $(runlevel --set 0 || true)
if [ $1 != unknown ]; then
PREVLEVEL=$1
RUNLEVEL=$2
export PREVLEVEL RUNLEVEL
fi

exec /etc/init.d/rc 0
end script

  Binary package hint: upstart

In single user ('single' appended to kernel command line) trying to
- reboot causes rc6 to segfault (signal 15)
+ reboot causes rc6 to terminate (signal 15)

No other error comes up, and the system does not reboot.

A reboot -f does manage to reboot, although I imagine that this isn't
  the preferred workaround.

[Bug 60502] Udev doesn't update /dev/disk/by-label to reflect LVM LVs

2006-09-14 Thread stevenschlansker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: udev

I have several LVM VGs, each with multiple LVs. They are all assigned
disk labels such as /backup to reflect their purpose. I mount them
with LABEL=/backup type entries in /etc/fstab. This same fstab worked
on Dapper just fine, but now Edgy complains that /dev/disk/by-
label//backup does not exist. Indeed, by listing the directory, all my
drives except for the LVs show up just fine. I've searched google, and
the only reference to having udev update its directories said that
rebooting would fix it. Obviously this doesn't fix it in this
situation.

Seems to affect Edgy only.
