[Bug 1192028] Re: Compiz refresh rate resets to 50 Hz automatically

2014-04-04 Thread tankdriver
The system is still usable. I think that users that do not watch (HD)
videos or play animated games will not notice this bug at all. On the
other hand, users that do all this things and are used to e.g. smooth
video playback (from e.g. 12.04) will be very disappointed about this
(quality regression) bug.

[Bug 1129410] [NEW] When using Window Spread, a maximized window changes its size

2013-02-18 Thread tankdriver
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
- open a window (e.g. Home Folder window)
- maximize the window
- press Super + W to trigger the window spread feature.

What I expect to happen:
- a thumbnail view of the maximized window is displayed

What happened instead:
- the logic height of the window is decreased by ~30px and a thumbnail view is
displayed

This is easily measurable by choosing in nautilus a folder with lots of files
and selecting list view mode.
at least 2 rows are not displayed in the thumbnail view.

Why this is important:
When your use e.g. Virtualbox and the window is maximized, using the window
spread feature causes a change of resolution in the Virtualbox guest OS.
(causes flickering, movement of windows within the guest and other pains).
Exiting the window spread causes again a change of resolution.

[Bug 953861] [NEW] network-manager-pptp forgets to add a route when connecting to (split) VPN

2012-03-13 Thread tankdriver
Public bug reported:

What I expected to happen:
Connect successfully to company VPN, use company resources normally.

What happened instead:
Connect successfully to company VPN, can not do anything, network is dead.

The company VPN is set up only for some services, so in the VPN-settings,
Use this connection only for resources on its network is checked.
It is working on Windows without any problems, so i looked at the routing table
and saw that a route is missing on ubuntu:

original routing table, vpn enabled:
$ route
Kernel-IP-Routentabelle
ZielRouter Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface
default 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG0 00 eth0
10.20.40.100* 255.255.255.255 UH0 00 ppp0
link-local * 255.255.0.0 U 1000 00 eth0
192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 1 00 eth0
193.XXX.XXX.XXX 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.255 UGH 0 00 eth0
193.XXX.XXX.XXX 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.255 UGH 0 00 eth0

fixed (in my case) routing table, vpn enabled and fully working:
$ route
Kernel-IP-Routentabelle
ZielRouter Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface
default 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG0 00 eth0
10.0.0.0* 255.0.0.0 U 0 00 ppp0
10.20.40.100* 255.255.255.255 UH0 00 ppp0
link-local * 255.255.0.0 U 1000 00 eth0
192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 1 00 eth0
193.XXX.XXX.XXX 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.255 UGH 0 00 eth0
193.XXX.XXX.XXX 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.255 UGH 0 00 eth0

The workaround is to add a route manually, targeting the company
network, using ppp0

Windows adds this route automatically.

Please fix this bug, this was very time-consuming and annoying to find
out the root cause of the problem.

[Bug 933294] [NEW] Disable workspace-overlapping windows feature for desktop experience reasons

2012-02-15 Thread tankdriver
Public bug reported:

I think the feature that a window can overlap onto several workspaces is in
my mind completely useless and very irritating to new ubuntu users.
In my opinion, one of the best advantages of KDE and Gnome-Shell is that every
workspace is in its own universe and there can not be any side effects to other
workspaces.

Besides that, a lot of minor bugs would be solved considering
overlapping windows.

I think, the closest 5 Tasks is the best solution, because a task,

days left, no matter if something was edited or not.

btw, a Gnome Shell-fitting design would be cool too. (perhaps with an

[Bug 862639] [NEW] swapping makes the system very slow and unresponsive in oneiric

2011-09-29 Thread tankdriver
Public bug reported:

Hardware: Quad-Core, 4GB Ram, 8GB Swap partition, encrypted Home.
Steps to reproduce:
- do something with high IO, eg.
- make large Backups, copy files, install/update lots of packages.
- after a few seconds there are a few MB swapped out (~ 30 MB)
- work with the system during this operations.

What I expect to happen:
- system is a little bit slower, but surfing in the web, office work, listening
to music works smooth.

What happened instead:
- every 2-5 seconds, when some MB are swapped (checked via
gnome-system-monitor) the whole desktop hangs for a second:
- including mouse, writing text, music player falls silent too.

- I can reproduce the choppy mouse only with the Unity shell,
- with gnome-shell the mouse stays ok, but all other programs hangs too.

[Bug 857294] Re: Creating hotspot leads to endless connect/disconnect loop

2011-09-24 Thread tankdriver
I found a workaround to this issue:
- kill any running dnsmasq process. (or restart computer afterwards)
- Disable IPv6 in the Hotspot settings. (IPv6: Ignore)
- restart the Hotspot

---

The default settings of the Hotspot in Oneiric are:
- IPv4: Shared with other Computers
- IPv6: Automatic

When selecting IPv6: Ignore everything works as expected.
Suggesting to change the default settings of the Hotspot-feature, because I
think IPv6 is not really necessary for Ad-Hoc Networks in order to work around
this bug.

[Bug 857294] [NEW] Creating hotspot leads to endless connect/disconnect loop

2011-09-23 Thread tankdriver
Public bug reported:

- Create Hotspot via System Settings Network Wireless Hotspot or
manually in the network-manager
- What I expected:
* Hotspot is created, clients can use internet connection
- What happened instead:
* The new connection connects and disconnects after a second, when
autoconnect is enabled, this happens very fast in a endless loop.

I think this error message in the log causes the failure:
dnsmasq[5213]: failed to create listening socket for 10.42.43.1: Address
 already in use
 dnsmasq[5213]: FAILED to start up

[Bug 766612] Re: nfs mount points do not appear in the unity launcher and there is no way to add them manually

2011-09-14 Thread tankdriver
I came across this bug while testing oneiric, and something changed:

x) With natty, everything mounted in /media appeared on the desktop.
(does not matter if automounted or in fstab/manual)

x) With oneiric, generally nothing mounted appears on the desktop. (I think
this is by design)
  - USB-Sticks, external drives, other partitions [auto]mounted in /media
appear in the launcher and inside a nautilus window in section Devices
  - SMB or NFS Shares mounted in /media via fstab appear inside nautilus in
section Computer BUT NOT in the launcher
  - SMB Shares mounted via Browse Network inside appear in section Network,
nothing in the Launcher.

I like the old behaviour more. (one click instead of opening nautilus and
selecting shortcut)
Keep in mind: This behaviour is for users who edit their /etc/fstab files and
expect, when the mountpoint is on /media, a icon somewhere on the left side of
their Desktop appears, representing(and pointing) to that mount. If the mount
should be hidden, they can use /mnt anyway.
I think the user should be able to decide if there is a icon of a manual
mount on the launcher or not.
The default setting of the launcher is Show Devices: Only Mounted, so I does
not think that we have a problem with clutter

Even in GNOME SHELL, SMB shares mounted via fstab appear directly on the
Desktop in the right bottom. (label: Removable device)

** Changed in: unity
   Status: Incomplete = Confirmed

Testing oneiric beta + updates,
Under high I/O load the mouse pointer has now become a very choppy feeling,
(e.g. freezes for 1 second)

[Bug 790394] Re: When maximizing windows, they move onto another virtual desktop.

2011-08-06 Thread tankdriver
I am quite sure that this is a duplicate of Bug #776435 (compiz package, can
be reproduced with 10.04 too)
But I do not know how compiz is connected with unity to get a clear separation
here.
Please take a look at my comment. (why I think this was not a problem in the
pre-unity ubuntu releases)

[Bug 776435] Re: Window maximizes on the wrong workspace

2011-08-05 Thread tankdriver
I can reproduce this bug in Oneiric.
it seems when over the half of the window is overlapping to another
workspace, the bug appears.

I made some research:
- using Ubuntu 10.04 with desktop effects enabled, I can reproduce this bug.
so I think, this particular bug is older than unity. (compiz only)

I have not found any old bug reports referring to this issue (yet), so I think
nobody ran into this issue in the past (before unity).
WHY? 2 theories: In pre-Unity Ubuntu releases,
- The default window placement (for new opened windows) was better, so no one
had to maximize overlapping windows, because the windows opened non-overlapping.
- The typical usage of windows changed with unity (e.g. new users, not
familiar with unity features, push windows to the side of the screen to get
to the program below, instead of using unity launcher to do that.

In natty I can say that the window placement is not ideal and this bug appears
very often.
I have not tried oneiric for intensive use yet, eventually the window placement
is better.

[Bug 774986] Re: compiz smart placement creates windows overlapping two desktops

2011-08-05 Thread tankdriver
I think this bug together with
- Bug #755842 (Non-maximized windows which sit on the border of a workspace
move when called)
- Bug #762001 (Maximizing/unmaximizing a window by double clicking the
title-bar shifts the window towards right)
- Bug #751858 (Unity messes up geometry calculations)
(all of these bugs cause somewhat windows overlapping workspaces)
makes users run into the following bugs:

- Bug #776435 (Window maximizes on the wrong workspace)
- Bug #776982 (Unity launcher confused by workspace wrap around?)
- Bug #738908 (When windows overlap workspaces, launcher doesn't properly
switch windows)
- Bug #726846 (windows near to the right edge of the screen inhibit the unity
toolbar on the next rightmost screen)

[Bug 755842] Re: Non-maximized windows which sit on the border of a workspace move when called

2011-06-17 Thread tankdriver
I think this bug causes a strange behaviour of the launcher too:
- Do the steps to reproduce this bug (or work for some time with unity and
mulitple programs ;-) ).
- Go to a workspace (which seems to be) without any open program windows.
-- The launcher hides for no noticeable reason.
Consequences: You think its an inconsistent behaviour of autohiding in the
launcher. -- annoying.
Explanation: Due to the default 2x2 alignment of Workspaces in Unity, with this
wrap around feature (I don't know the right name, but its the when window
overlaps the right border of the most right workspace, it appears on the left
thing) A window can move some pixels , from the left side coming, under the
Launcher and it does autohide.

Another Important fact (I just came across):

When I change my laptops so that:

HOST: Acer Aspire 4810, natty, has Ethernet access (Intel Wifi chip)

The ad-Hoc Network works flawlessly (reproduceable, without clicking

But its very very complicated to work with this laptop configuration, so I want
it the other way round.

[Bug 776335] [NEW] [natty regression] Can not make working Ad-Hoc Wifi Networks any more

2011-05-03 Thread tankdriver
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I use 2 Laptops, one has Internet access over Ethernet and I share the
connection to the second laptop.
Laptop#1: Sony VAIO F13, natty, has Ethernet access
Laptop#2: Acer Aspire 4810, natty

Steps to reproduce:
 * On Laptop#1 Connect Ethernet Cable and Create new Wifi AdHoc Network
- NetworkManager - Edit Connections - Wireless - Add - SSID test -
Mode Ad-hoc - IPv4 Settings - Shared to other computers - save.
 * Notification says. test -- connection established

What I expected to happen:
 * On Laptop#2: Wifi test appers, connect, and its online.

What I happened instead:
  * On Laptop#2 nothing appears.

What happened when Laptop#1 has booted on a Maverick liveCD:
  * Connection on Laptop#2 works perfectly.

I can reproduce this when everything runs on liveCDs to avoid possible
settings/installation issues.

[Bug 766857] [NEW] Can't open nautilus when a file copying action is in progress

2011-04-20 Thread tankdriver
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Steps to reproduce:

(initial condition: No medias are mounted, no folders are on the Desktop.)
- Copy something (big) eg. ISOs from the home folder to somewhere in the home
folder.
The nautilus progress bar window comes up and displays the progress of the
process.
- Close all remaining Nautilus windows.
The nautilus progress bar window stays open and the copying process continues.
- Lets say you want to work with your folders again: Click on the home folder
icon on the unity launcher.

What I expect to happen:
  - nautilus comes up an I can work with it parallel to the copying process.

What happened instead:
- nothing, no nautilus window comes up. The nautilus progress bar window gets
focused ant thats it.
And when no medias are mounted and no folders are on the Desktop, there is NO
WAY to get a nautilus window until the copying process has ended.

Workaround in this situation:
  - Make a new folder on the desktop and open it to get a nautilus window.

Thoughts: this is a quite similar behavior like Bug #760437 (Can't start
firefox when a download is in progress) , marked opinion.

Additional information:
I use ubuntu natty beta2 + updates
unity 3.8.8-0ubuntu2

[Bug 760437] [NEW] Can't start firefox when a download is in progress

2011-04-14 Thread tankdriver
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Steps to reproduce:

- Start Firefox, download something (big) eg.
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/natty-desktop-amd64.iso
The firefoxs download window comes up and displays the progress of the
download
- Close the main Firefox window.
The download window stays open and the download continues.
- Lets say you want to surf on the Internet again: Click on the Firefox icon on
the unity launcher.

What I expect to happen:
- the main firefox window comes up and I can browse the web parallel to the
running download.

What happened instead:
- nothing, no firefox window comes up. The downloads window gets focused and
thats it.

Workaround in this situation:
 - right click on the firefox icon and open a new window
--- This in not intuitive!! (even when you know that you can right-click on an
icon) I don't want a __NEW__ window, I just want to use Firefox.

Thoughts: Unity does not get the difference between a normal Firefox
window and the downloads window.

Additional informations:
I use ubuntu natty beta1 + updates
unity 3.8.6-0ubuntu1

[Bug 744795] Re: Unity launcher icons tooltipps do not disappear when swiching workspaces

2011-04-13 Thread tankdriver
I have unity 3.8.6-0ubuntu1 (and compiz 1:0.9.4+bzr20110411-0ubuntu1) installed
and i still can reproduce this bug.
(tried unity --reset command and guest session too)

Now I will wait until natty Beta 2 is officially out and check again
from a live-session or fresh install.

Another thought: Could this bug be related to bug #356702 (Tooltips
stick when switching desktops (Compiz)) ??? , because I came across
this bug in older ubuntu releases and its really quite the same
behavior.

[Bug 755842] Re: Non-maximized windows which sit on the border of a workspace move when called

2011-04-13 Thread tankdriver
I usually work with lots of small windows, some of them sit on the border of
the screen.
After a while, I thought the behavior of the unity launcher changes and when I
click on an Icon, the workspace did not switch to the right one, or did not
switch at all.
This bug is very annoying and definitely a big usability issue, especially for
unity-newbies.
