[Bug 969907] Re: software-center crashed with AttributeError in _app_activated_cb(): 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get_pkgname'

2012-06-17 Thread technoboi
System launched an auto-report whilst I was using the Software Centre. I
was trying to uninstall more than one item at once. I really did prefer
the old 'add-remove programs' where a few items could be selected for
install or uninstall. The Software Centre isn't keen on doing more than
one job at once.

while installing. I have the same issue, it was also the same when
using the live disk. I have only been able to do the install because I

[Bug 427653] Re: cups fails on usb-parallel printer

2011-08-08 Thread technoboi
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 564917 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/564917

Running Ubuntu 'classic' 11.04

I've had to use a USB to parallel printer adapter to get my printer to work on
a new motherboard.
lsusb lists it :-
Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2305 Parallel Port
This is always in the list if the printer cable is plugged in.

I'm getting the same problem as mentioned above. It looks like this has
still not been fixed.

I can boot up and the first print job works. After that I have to unplug
and replug the USB lead before every print job otherwise the job is just
queued.

In Printer properties:-

[Bug 699840] Re: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs: Mountpoint Already registered

2011-06-05 Thread technoboi
I run a Samba server on a Xubuntu machine (11.04). That serves a laptop
(Xubuntu 11.04 now with Gnome-panel installed) which works perfectly but I now
get the error described on my main machine (Ubuntu 11.04 Classic). This is a
new error. Up to recently it has worked perfectly.
Under 'Network' I normally see 2 icons:
'Server' 'Windows Network'.
I don't get the server icon at all now but just the 'Windows Network'. When I
click upon it I get:-

[Bug 545443] Re: Lucid on Asus EEE PC 901 and 1000H fails to connect to any wireless network

2010-09-10 Thread technoboi
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 496093 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/496093

Eee PC901 - Netbook Remix. Upgraded to Lucid when it came out of beta.
I hadn't updated for a while. Today everything was perfect until I did an
update. Previous to that I had the internal WiFi as well as an external WiFi
dongle working perfectly. Now try as I may I can't get anything to connect -
except once it did connect after a while but that was it, have tried lots of
stuff to try to get it working to no avail. Works OK on ethernet.
I had Jolicloud on a USB stick. I tried that and it connected no bother - so
definitely not a hardware problem.
Hope something is sorted soon. :-(

[Bug 311045] Re: Constant hard drive activity

2010-02-05 Thread technoboi
I can't see an option, on this page, to re-open this bug report, so I am
just making a comment - maybe that will re-open it???

I get this problem with Mythtv. It has occurred on more than one install. I
have a remote frontend/backend and, on my desktop, I use a frontend. However
the unused backend, on the desktop constantly accesses the disk. It is
irritating to listen to so I have a button on the top panel to close down the
unused backend. I have tried removing the backend program from /etc/init.d -
that does NOT stop the problem. It only removes a way of switching the
offending program off. Thus, I conclude that it is a program that the backend
accesses which causes the problem but NOT the backend program itself because,
as I stated, I can remove /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend, reboot, and the problem
still occurs.
I have checked out the mysql.txt files, as detailed in an earlier post, but
they are all OK and only feature the correct IP and password for the REMOTE
backend server.

If you require any logs etc. please let me know which ones and I will send them
accordingly.

I use Karmic and MythTV 0.22 on both the desktop and also on the remote
'server' backend/frontend.

[Bug 481432] Re: [Karmic] wireless connection keeps dropping - WPA TKIP

2009-12-19 Thread technoboi
This might be the same problem that I am getting. I am using Karmic Netbook
Remix on an Eee PC901.
It does connect to the wifi but it slowly degrades and thus downloads get
painfully slow. Starts on full bars, then it might jump to 2 bars, then back to
full...but eventually it drops to nothing and then disconnects. I then can't
reconnect unless I reboot. I can however run the 'radar scan' application,
which displays local networks that can be received, and it picks up my network
and other networks in my area. I can, in the same position in my house, always
get a good signal on my Nokia N95 (wifi).
So, I think that this is a software problem especially as, previously, I used a
modified set up of Ubuntu 8.04 on this computer and the wireless worked just
fine.

Re: [Bug 333805] Re: Firefox 3.0.6 freezes when trying to Flash Movies

2009-02-26 Thread technoboi
Hi James,
Thank you for your email. I'm sorry that I have been a little slow in my
reply but I have only just transferred all my Windows Thunderbird mail
over to Ubuntu.

In answer to your question:

Which flash player packages did you try, in which order?

could you ls /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/ in a terminal and report
back

Answer:-
flashplugin-alternative.so nphelix.so nphelix.xpt

If I use about:plugins in the Firefox address I get (standby for some
html):-

Shockwave Flash

File name: libswfdecmozilla.so
Shockwave Flash 9.0 r999

MIME Type Description SuffixesEnabled
application/x-shockwave-flash Adobe Flash movie swf Yes
application/futuresplashFutureSplash movie spl Yes

I should add that the CPU is an Athlon 64 but I am running Ubuntu i386 version.

However, the plot thickens. I have just gone onto youtube and successfully
played a video. Then I tried to play a video on megawhat.tv Megawhat was a
mess with 3 buttons piled on top of each other where the video should be. I
clicked on them and nothing happened. Then I went back to youtube... nothing
would play in youtube. I restarted Firefox - still the same. I restarted Ubuntu
- still no luck. I tried a cold restart - still no luck. I installed an
extension to Firefox to clear the memory and disk caches - no luck. I tried
starting Firefox in safe mode from the command line and switched off all
extensions - still no luck!
So, I'm guessing that something on the Megawhat.tv site corrupted something.
Megawhat works perfectly OK on my EeePC 901, running Hardy Heron, and on my
MythTV box (I think that is Gutsy).
I tried disabling the Flash plugin, restarting Firefox then re-enabling the
plugin - no luck. The same problem, Firefox just locks up and after a short
while greys over. The video screen does come up and the circle in the middle
rotates about 180 degrees - then lock up.

I wondered about deleting the plugin and then trying to add it again but
I don't know how to delete it.

That's all I can report. If you have any other suggestions then I will
be pleased to hear them.

Regards,
Brian

[Bug 333805] [NEW] Firefox 3.0.6 freezes when trying to Flash Movies

2009-02-24 Thread technoboi
Public bug reported:

Running Firefox 3.0.6 (Cannonical 1.0) on a newly installed Ubuntu
8.10, with full upgrade and update.

When trying to play a movie in Youtube there is a pause then the whole of the
Firefox, client display, greys over. Having had no luck I tried various
non-free Flash Plugins Firstly 'sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree' via
command line, when that didn't work I uninstalled it and then tried the
Macromedia one, via 'Add/Remove Programs' in Ubuntu, but none work. Also
Firefox does not work with movies on www.stuff.tv and www.megawhat.tv
On these two sites however, Firefox does not freeze but the movies just don't
play.

[Bug 160326] Re: No video. No crash. Intel driver problem. Vesa driver works.

2007-11-12 Thread technoboi
There were problems with the vesa driver on mythTV when watching 'live'
TV. I have now tried Intel i810 and this appears to work OK but I can't
get the resolution I would like to use with that driver. So, still
hoping for a solution to allow use of the newer 'intel' driver.

I installed the alternative version of Ubuntu 7.10. After install, on boot up,
the video went off but the system did not crash. The drum beat, associated with
the login screen was evident.
I changed the intel driver to vesa. Then the operating system worked OK but
with reduced video performance.

Strangely, an older version, Ubuntu 6.1 desktop, I THINK it was,
installed and worked OK direct from install on the same machine.

I can supply a copy of these files if required. I can't see a way of attaching

Re: [Bug 151103] Re: Lose video on CD load up. Stalls.

2007-10-24 Thread technoboi
Hi Bryce,

I have, as you requested, checked out v7.10 final. I am pleased to
inform you that all went well.
I encountered no problems at all on the install.
I did just a brief check out by launching Firefox and going to the BBC
web site. All was perfect!

I might just mention a small, but what for some may be a significant
thing, though not a bug as such.
A message comes up on the 'Ubuntu' screen telling the user to remove the
disk from the drive. I have seen other messages, I think, on this
screen, on previous installs. The messages are in dark blue, against a
black background, and are of a very small font size. I have some
difficulty in reading this message and others, whose eyesight is
deficient, may not be able to read it at all , particularly on a small
screen, and they may wonder what has happened to the install.

Thanks for all your good work!

Regards,
Brian

We made a few changes late in the cycle to address intel gfx issues.

If it is still broken, can you also switch to a console (ctrl+alt+f1),
retrieve the following and upload them?

 * /var/log/Xorg.0.log
 * output of sudo lspci -vvnn
 * output of sudo ddcprobe

[Bug 151103] Lose video on CD load up. Stalls.

2007-10-09 Thread technoboi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

(Hope I got the package right - someone else gave me the link)
Hardware:
Abit iL-90MV motherboard with 'on board' graphics.
Intel 'Mobile' Core 2 Duo CPU T5600
2GB Corsair memory.

I wanted to install Mythbuntu (based on 7.10). That didn't work. Thus, I
downloaded Ubuntu desktop 7.10 beta i86 and tried that. I got just the same
problem.
Here is what happened:-

I put the CD in the drive. The Ubuntu screen came up with the 'cylon'
type eye going back and forth. Eventually the 'load up' progress
indicator came on and came to the end. Then, that was it. The video went
off and nothing more could be done.

So, I restarted and tried using 'safe graphics' mode. This time the load up
occurred as before followed by some on screen text:-
Starting deferred execution scheduler atd
Starting periodic scheduler crond
Checking battery state
Running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local) .

Then up came a screen stating:-
'The display server has been shut down about 6 times in the last 90 seconds. It
is likely that something bad is going on. Waiting for 2 minutes before trying
again on display :0.'

Needless to say I got no further.
