[Bug 145431] Re: compiz slow with nvidia
I can confirm this problem with the latest nvidia-glx-new and nVidia 6200 TurboCache. Why is this considered a small bug? It's critical in my opinion because it effectively cripples a new Ubuntu installation once the user enables the restricted nVidia drivers, which is recommended. Once restricted drivers are installed, 3D desktop effects are immediately enabled by default. This slows the system to a crawl, and seems to make many windows appear blank, like the Preferences/Appearance window, so one cannot disable 3D desktop effects. The only way is to disable the restricted nVidia drivers. Non-savvy users would not know what to do most probably. -- compiz slow with nvidia https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/145431 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 13610] Re: Use 'ondemand' cpufreq governor
I've heard a lot of reports of horrid battery life in Ubuntu compared to Windows XP. Isn't defaulting to ondemand when unplugged the issue? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the default settings in Windows XP are ondemand when on AC and powersave when unplugged. ondemand is extremely sensitive to CPU usage, so basically, as long as the computer isn't completely idle, the CPU will run at max speed, even when doing mundane stuff like browsing the web or doing word processing. That eats up your battery life extremely quickly. I am running an old Pentium M 1.8 GHz that throttles to 600 MHz on powersave. I have no issues whatsoever playing videos (even H.264 video) and music without skipping in Windows XP. Thus, I strongly suggest Ubuntu default to powersave mode when a laptop is unplugged. If that is unacceptable, at least use conservative. As it is, laptop users who don't know how to manually change the governor setting will likely shy away from Ubuntu due to short battery life. -- Use 'ondemand' cpufreq governor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/13610 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 137477] Re: [gutsy] [regression] suspend-to-ram: resume is blocked on a blinking cursor until some random keystrokes are entered on the keyboard
I have a more serious issue, but it seems related to this so I'm not creating a new report. Suspend and hibernate work fine for me as well (except for a ton of messages flashing across my console before the screen goes black). However, when I try to resume after a suspend, my laptop is frozen with a black screen, not even a cursor. The same thing happens if I boot up after a hibernation. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 8600. Steps to reproduce my problem: 1. Suspend 2. Resume (on my laptop that's hitting the power button) 3.
