[Bug 668396] Re: grub-pc should add debconf hook to update grub-pc/install_devices when using grub-install manually
Colin, I am unaware of how to do option 1. I've tried echo'ing the selection number using Teletype frontend but it wouldn't take that particular question. Sorry.. still new to debconf. Option 2 sounds suitable. Curious: would there be a problem with honoring the GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID variable? Kind of moot point now but it seems to be the right way. [Bug 668396] Re: grub-pc should add debconf hook to update grub-pc/install_devices when using grub-install manually
Phillip, I see your point about installing grub to other devices. However, its not so easy to just run dpkg-reconfigure after the uuid's change. I admin 150+ machines and the prompting for the install device debconf wants to make on each machine would be a nightmare unless I wrote expect scripts and I would really rather avoid that. ;) There is a setting in /etc/default/grub where you can set GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID to true. Perhaps debconf could honor this setting and record the install device as the old BIOS enumerated /dev/sdxy scheme. Doing this would have avoided my frusterations in the first place. -- grub-pc should add debconf hook to update grub-pc/install_devices when using grub-install manually https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/668396 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 668396] [NEW] grub-pc should add debconf hook to update grub-pc/install_devices when using grub-install manually
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: grub-pc On initial install of grub-pc, debconf prompts the user to select which device he/she would like to install grub to and then records the selection in grub-pc/install_device in apt's databases. I think if ubuntu wants to record such actions in its database, then direct calls by the admin to the grub-install command should also then include a hook to update the entry to grub-pc/install-device. Without doing this subsequent updates to grub-pc (or even dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc) will prompt the user where to install grub IF grub-install was ran previously on a different device. I rely heavily on byte for byte imaging to mass deploy custom Ubuntu images at work and the prompting debconf wanted to do for (potentially) each machine (because the original build had a UUID set as the device) even after I manually re-installed grub was driving me absolutely crazy. On a side note it would be nice if future Ubuntu installers gave the option to use the old device naming schemes instead of UUID's as I think there is still a strong enough demand for it but thats for a different discussion Thanks, Tyler ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: grub-pc 1.98-1ubuntu7 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-25.45-generic 2.6.32.21+drm33.7 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-25-generic i686 Architecture: i386 Date: Fri Oct 29 11:47:11 2010 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx - Release i386 (20100429) ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: grub2 ** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 lucid -- grub-pc should add debconf hook to update grub-pc/install_devices when using grub-install manually https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/668396 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks Chris but why not Lucid to? I have an organization of 150+ machines using it and upgrading to Maverick just like that for firefox would not be ideal. There is an additional patch upstream: http://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=33939 Without it I still get random cursor freezes on ANY video card trying to use Xinerama. [Bug 601111] [NEW] gnome doesn't care about group permissions (device access)
Public bug reported: Its seems since gnome has utilized policykit + udisks fine grain control of permissions and mounting options on devices have become grossly inadequate and the conventional group permissions + hal/gconf mounting options are now being completely ignored. What I need is very simple: read-only access to any removable media, including usb drives, floppy disks, and restriction to burning recordable cds/dvds. In the past all that was needed for this for usb and flash drives was to change hal rules and/or gconf mounting options -or- just remove the user from the group (floppy, plugdev) so they can't access it altogether. As for CD/DVD burning all you can do is remove the user from the cdrom group. Simple. Now, because gnome seems to be no longer honoring any of this, I've had to resort to either A) putting the entries in fstab or B) creating policy kit rules. A) is out of the question because I can't be sure of how many potential usb drives or floppy drives can be inserted into a machine so B) was my only option requiring a password for the user to mount them. Not what I wanted but fine. Now enter a new problem: any user has the ability to burn CDs or DVDs. Neither policykit nor udisks has any such restriction rule and as of right now deselecting Use CD-ROM Drives in users-admin has no effect on access to the device -or at least nautilus doesn't seem to care. If I pop in a recordable CD or DVD it gives me the option to burn contents onto it with no problem, the same goes for brasero used by itself. If I create udev rules to make the mode 0440 on the cd device or manually set it on the command line via chmod, nautilus seems to put it right back so it can burn away. K3b on the other hand seems to honor the group delegation. Is gnome intentionally ignoring groups or is this a bug? If so then why provide the users-admin interface for delegating permissions on them if it has no effect? [Bug 589236] [NEW] no open with dialog box in firefox for application/octet-stream
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox There is currently a bug in firefox upstream where the open with dialog box will not appear for application links being sent as application/octet-stream. Instead of dropping back to examining the file extension and using the appropriate helper application, it simply defaults to what it is supposed to for octet-streams and only provide a save as or cancel dialog box. The bug is located here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=327323 See the testdownload link on the bug report page for an example of what I'm talking about: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=334071 Mozilla has acknowledged it is a problem (since 2006!) and will be fixed but that scheduled launch will be for mozilla 1.9.3, which is firefox 3.7. I'm trying to get my organization migrated over to Ubuntu but this firefox bug in combination with needing to be able to handle several attachments from zimbra creates a problem. I've already patched their current firefox (3.6.3) with the following patches and it has been running solid for months now. Below are links to the appropriate patches to make this work as it should (I guess I can't upload more than one patch at a time?).
