My ccsm mproblem is resolved - the error message complained about an unknown symbol, I think the variable name was in the bug report - I think it was CCEdgestToStringList or something similar. When I removed all compiz related packages, removed all third party sources from my repository list, and then reinstalled compiz and ccsm, everything worked fine. So chalk it up to user error.
