[Bug 760920] Re: STA driver not can not activate bcm4311 wireless

2011-04-17 Thread uga
I am on 11.04 beta 2 on Dell Inspiron 6400, also BCM4311:

uga@anna-laptop:~$ lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4
03:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX

0b:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN
[14e4:4311] (rev 01)

'sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer' did not solve my problem.
I still don't have any wireless.

According to the Addition Drivers thingy I have Broadcom STA wireless
driver and This driver is activated and currently in use

Any workarounds?

[Bug 111933] Re: Update Manager stops updating from repositories.

2009-07-07 Thread uga
I'd like to reopen this bug. It just happened to me on a brand new
Ubuntu 9.04 system, twice within one week.

The update manager displays the exact same error message as in the

I selected Download all updates in the background

2009-07-07 Thread uga
I'm sorry, reading the error message the second time I realized that it
is not as exact as I thought it was. It actually reads:

E: Could not get lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock - open (11 Resource

E: Unable to lock the download directory

Now that I think of it, maybe the previous error I got from Update
Manager was different.

[Bug 395964] [NEW] CD-ROM not shown on the desktop/Places

2009-07-05 Thread uga
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu 9.04

After you insert a CD the CD-ROM mounts but no link is placed on the
desktop or Places. I am using a USB CD-ROM.

I can see the disk mounted to /media/cdrom0, but the permissions are not
allowing the current user to browse it. If I go sudo, I can browse the
CD (not exactly an average user solution), as you can see from the
following shell output:

u...@terminus:~$ cd /media
u...@terminus:/media$ ls
cdrom cdrom0 DataOne DataThree DataTwo floppy floppy0
u...@terminus:/media$ cd cdrom0
bash: cd: cdrom0: Permission denied
u...@terminus:/media$ sudo su

r...@terminus:/media/cdrom0# cd ..
r...@terminus:/media# ls -l

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2009-04-28 08:27 floppy0
r...@terminus:/media#

As you can see the CD is there and is perfectly browsable. The problem
is that /media/cdrom0 belongs to user:group 400:401, and only the user
has any permissions rwx.

The attached screenshot shows the absence of the CD from the Places.

Thanks,

Yegor

2009-06-15 Thread uga
There is another issue with the active tab. There is no top margin,
which makes the tab stick to the navigation bar. Also, there is no left
margin on the left-most tab, which makes it stick to the left border of
the screen when Firefox is maximized. 1px at the top and 1px on the left
would already make it look much better.

Hi everyone,

I wonder why, despite the problem being confirmed by multiple different
users, it is not getting any attention from the development team. Is
there an alternative recommended method for desktop locking in existence
for Ubuntu? Or is the use-case too unpopular?

It would be nice to know at least whether there is any interest in the
development team to fix this bug.

Thanks,

Re: [Bug 131711] Re: [gutsy] no sound: Failed to construct test pipeline in sound recording

2008-02-10 Thread uga
As usual, your problem stems from the fact that you are trying to run
Linux on Windows hardware. Before buying any piece of hardware, first
make sure it works with Linux. Yes this is one more step you have to
go through that you normally don't have to with Windows, especially if
you are buying from the likes of bestbuy, etc. The same is true vice
versa. Windows won't run out-of-the-box on Linux hardware. Try running
XP on EEE PC or OLPC.

Obviously you will rarely find Linux support information on the
package, but you can find it either on the manufacturer's web site or
public user forums. For most of the hardware problems I've had in
Ubuntu I could find an answer on Ubuntu forums. Sometimes a piece of
hardware is rebranded, but internally runs the same chips and circuits
as many other similar products. Sometimes is helps to check the
technical specs of the product and make sure that the chipset is
supported by Linux. A good example is M-Audio. Their sound cards are
branded as M-Audio products, but they are based on envy24 chipset
which is supported in Linux.

I hope that this helps in your future Linux endeavours and that you
won't give up on Linux that easily. I didn't, and like you I had to
learn it the hard way. But now that Ubuntu works on all my home PCs
and laptops I enjoy the full power and flexibility of Linux at no cost
and no lock-ins, and listening to other people's Windows problems :)

Then plugged in my USB sound card. Couldn't find anything about how to
configure sound cards, so tried recording. Was told that Your audio
capture settings are invalid. Please correct them in the Multimedia

settings instead. Found the card, and changed the chat setting (and
why chat - the last thing I want to record?) to point to it. Then
clicked Test and got the Failed to construct pipeline message.

Poked around the conferences and fora and found that I had to enable ESD
(whatever that is?) and found it was already enabled. Enabled everything
in the volume control. Still the same message.

So can we please have some support for USB sound in both directions? Or
at least some documentation? The Help file for Sound Preferences does
not correspond with the software, and I cannot find any tutorial
documentation on what the various components of the sound system work
and fit together. (Get onto the Alsa-project site, and you're bombarded
with techno-babble on the first page).

And, as Casey J Peter wrote, in Windows it just works first time.

Sorry if this sounds like a whinge, but I'm finding Linux VERY
 frustrating to work with.

[Bug 144077] Re: [gutsy] Regression - Desktop effects could not be enabled on ATI Mobility Radeon

2007-10-10 Thread uga
Figured out my problem. The only way to run effects on my system is to
install xserver-xgl, which I did. I know it hasn't been declared stable
yet, but it works. So the problem is in the unclear error message.

A very nice article about this can be found here:
http://forlong.blogage.de/article/2007/10/2/Desktop-effects-by-default-
in-Gutsy---how-Compiz-Fusion-enhances-Ubuntus-desktop-of-version-710

It is indeed a little not logical for Gutsy to recommend to install a
driver In order to use your hardware more efficiently which then
doesn't support the enhanced desktop features.

[Bug 150068] Sabayon editor crashes when trying to make a change in a profile

2007-10-06 Thread uga
Public bug reported:

I'm using Gutsy on Dell Inspiron 6400 (Core 2 Duo, ATI Mobility X1400).

When trying to make a change to a profile, sabayon editor will crash.
The error message is also misleading about the location of the log file.
Below are the steps, and log file contents, screenshots will follow.

===

Steps to reproduce:

1). Install User Profile Editor (a.k.a. sabayon).
2). Create a user with default privileges (although this might not be
necessary) and a sabayon profile.
3). Select the profile and start editor
4). Try making a change, e.g. remove the bottom panel.
5). Voila

[Bug 150068] Re: Sabayon editor crashes when trying to make a change in a profile

2007-10-06 Thread uga
After the crash sabayon does not seem to stop running (or at least
something in the background doesn't) even when you exit. Error messages
keep popping up in the terminal window. My gut feeling it has something
to do with the xserver manipulations. Here's the message:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ERROR: execution of prepared query SetUpdateCount failed
due to unable to open database file with return code 14
ERROR: statement could not be finalized for SetUpdateCount with error unable to
open database file

[Bug 149022] While shutting down the login screen is shown for a split second

2007-10-04 Thread uga
Public bug reported:

Symptom:
When shutting down Ubuntu Gutsy the login screen is shown for a split second
before the actual shutdown. Even the dum-dum login sound is played as if the
system has just started up. This makes the whole shutdown experience too
cluttered. I even feel like logging in again when I see the login prompt :)

Just some thoughts:
This is probably happening because a user is first logged out and then the
system shutdown takes place. I think the logout/switch user/shutdown mechanism
should be able to recognize which of the processes is being carried out and not
show the login screen when system shutdown is in progress.

Thanks.

[Bug 140002] Re: Error installing upgraded cupsys

2007-10-04 Thread uga
I have noticed exactly the same lines in my upgrade log the first time
(sorry, the evidence was lost), but I also have additional symptoms (see
below). When I unchecked cupsys from the upgrade list the upgrade
finished without errors and only cupsys is left as an upgradable
package.

Trying to upgrade cupsys now fails with a GUI message:

overwrite `/usr/share/doc/libcupsys2/CREDITS.txt', which is also in

[Bug 146562] default sudo timeouts too long. Potential risks from gui pov.

2007-09-28 Thread uga
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdesudo

The default sudoers configuration file provided in ubuntu's sudo package
doesn't define the password (timeouttimestamp_timeout). This means it
allows for a 15 minutes default timeout.

From a terminal's point of view, this doesn't seem to be much of a
problem. Those applications run within 15 minutes from the same terminal
can run as root without providing a password. It doesn't seem to be much
of a problem, as far as the terminal is closed once maintenance is done.

The problem arises when the GUI sudo frontends are being used:

Kubuntu's kdesu has been modded to be using sudo (kdesudo) and system
administration applications all use kdesudo for authentication. This
means that, once somebody does system maintenance, ANY gui application
can run as root without providing any password authentication. Any gui
application the user runs, can get access to root privileges, even
without asking nor notifying the user about it.

I'd really like to see kdesu/do notifying the user that it's about to
run something as root. Or, else, have the default timeout reduced to a
safer value, to avoid any potential risks of gui applications taking
advantage of gui admin application users.

[Bug 138277] Re: Gnome settings daemon doesn't work

2007-09-18 Thread uga
(Dell Inspiron 6400, Core 2 Duo, ATI X1400, Gutsy Tribe 5 + all software
upgrades)

The problem comes and goes. It came back after the latest software
update (Sept 17, 2007).

I see a dialogue box shortly after login reading:

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work
correctly.

The last error message was:

Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-NFZ8GYvPtQ: Connection refused

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log
in.

If there is any information I can provide, please let me know where I
can dig it out.

Thanks

[Bug 129029] Re: [Gutsy Tribe-5] No Sound on Login Screen or during Login

2007-09-18 Thread uga
(Dell Inspiron 6400, Core 2 Duo, ATI X1400, Sound: HDA Intel SigmaTel
STAC9200)

I'm on Gutsy Tribe 5 + all software updates. The problem is exactly as
explained in the original bug report, i.e. a beep on welcome screen and
no login sound. In the sound configuration I have login and logout
sounds selected and working when I click Play.

Yep, it's the same error message as explained in bug 131711, but my
sound works and testing all other functions works as well. I only get
this error message when testing Sound Capture.

[Bug 138318] gnome-sound-properties hangs will error message

2007-09-08 Thread uga
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I'm using Gutsy daily live CD on a Dell Inspiron 6400 with the following
audio hw: HDA Intel on SigmaTel STAC9200 chipset.

When running System - Preferences - Sound or the gnome-sound-
properties command, after hitting Test on Sound Capture with ALSA
selected as an option the program freezes for a moment and then shows an
error dialogue reading: Failed to construct test pipeline for
'gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink
profile=chat'

Not a lot of information in the command line either:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gnome-sound-properties
/bin/sh: /usr/bin/esd: not found
Killed

How do I enable more debug output? I can then send you more info.

Thanks
