[Bug 2065204] [NEW] icons missing when you launch via .desktop

2024-05-08 Thread vadim
Public bug reported:

when you launch via .desktop or terminal gimp-2.10 icons missing on dash to dock
Can you explain why this is happening, because I contacted Gimp and they said
that this is a problem on the Ubuntu side, because everything opens correctly
in the Fedora repository. I'm using apt version

[Bug 2064882] [NEW] web camera doesn't work after update

2024-05-05 Thread Vadim
Public bug reported:

After every update web camera stops working (Cheese reports "No device

after next update it is not working again. This cycle was repeated many
times. The same cycle happens with login procedure that doesn't go
smoothly.

[Bug 1875671] Re: wayland: desktop folder missing in Nautilus sidebar

2024-04-30 Thread vadim
Still broken in 24.04

They don't seem to understand that
1)Ubuntu has desktop icons
2)Attach icon will be at the very bottom, which is inconvenient
3)Wayland is already the present, not the future

[Bug 2062377] Re: Ubuntu 24.04. Xorg crash when dmz-white cursor is selected

2024-04-19 Thread vadim
Well I found a solution when I downloaded the breeze theme I got breeze-
cursor instead of a white square when I use dmz-white in wayland when I
move the cursor to dash to panel. It is also the default cursor in xorg.

How it works? Like this:
There is a default folder in /usr/share/icons
There is index.theme inside

There is a line that indicates
Inherits=breeze_cursors

Basically you need to create a new cross cursor that would indicate that
there is no cursor or supply the sudo apt-get install breeze package by
default for Ubuntu

[Bug 2057792] Re: Some Games are crashing linked to a vm_max_map_count too low

2024-03-30 Thread vadim
I suggest including 2147483642 not in LTS, but in Ubuntu 24.10 as an
experiment. Because I noticed an unpleasant detail. For example, there
is a game "Don't Starve," I know there is a native version, but this is
just as an experiment with Proton. If you launch the Proton version, you
will receive a message when vm.max_map_count = 1048576:
"steam_app_218740" is not responding. You may choose to wait a short
while for it to continue or force the app to quit entirely. But when
vm.max_map_count = 2147483642, there are no problems, everything loads
instantly.

[Bug 2059721] Re: ovn db upgrade

2024-03-29 Thread Vadim Kuznetsov
Here is my explanation:
1. According to ovn docs
https://docs.ovn.org/en/latest/intro/install/ovn-upgrades.html
"The only step required after upgrading the packages is to restart ovn-northd,
which automatically restarts the databases and upgrades the database schema, as
well.
if you’re using a Linux distribution with systemd:
$ sudo systemctl restart ovn-northd

which is not true in Ubuntu case
```
ExecStart=/usr/share/ovn/scripts/ovn-ctl start_northd --ovn-manage-ovsdb=no
--no-monitor $OVN_CTL_OPTS
```
ovn-manage-ovsdb=no, so it will not restart the DBs.

2. DB restarts by ovn-ovsdb-server-nb.service and ovn-ovsdb-server-sb.service
run_nb_ovsdb and run_sb_ovsdb options in ovn-ctl
```
ExecStart=/usr/share/ovn/scripts/ovn-ctl run_nb_ovsdb $OVN_CTL_OPTS
```

3. This commit fixed Cluster OVN database upgrade
https://github.com/ovn-org/ovn/commit/67e2f386cc838d0b0f9b4b5da7fe611e1113b70c
in this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ovn/+bug/1907081

This is the code that is responsible for the upgrade
https://github.com/ovn-org/ovn/blob/5c2d311b8b7b4d5c3a619de72be6a433aa4c44db/utilities/ovn-ctl#L293
```
if test X$detach = Xno && test $mode = cluster && test -z
"$cluster_remote_addr" ; then
```
First two checks are true.
Third check means upgrade_cluster (L313) will run on leader node, i.e
--db-nb-cluster-remote-addr= and --db-sb-cluster-remote-addr= is not set.

4. During rolling upgrades of controller nodes, the leader will likely move.
OVS_CTL_OPTS generated from this template
https://github.com/openstack/openstack-ansible-os_neutron/blob/stable/2023.1/templates/ovn-northd-opts.j2
but only when new node joins the cluster
https://github.com/openstack/openstack-ansible-os_neutron/blob/stable/2023.1/tasks/providers/ovn_cluster_setup.yml#L105
so after upgrade all 3 nodes will have --db-nb-cluster-remote-addr and
--db-sb-cluster-remote-addr set to the some value that was leader node at that
time.

What we need is --db-nb-cluster-remote-addr= not set on leader node, so
during ovn-central restart on leader node upgrade_cluster will run.

[Bug 2059721] Re: ovn db upgrade

2024-03-29 Thread Vadim Kuznetsov
I reinstalled host OS and rebuild it from scratch including all containers.
I reinstalled compute nodes one by one, not to overload OpenStack
Infrastructure.
I'm using venv_wheel_build_enable=False to get around.
Alternative can be to reinstall and rebuild only infra (repo, galera, rabbitmq)
one of the controller, then rebuild compute nodes one by one with limit, then
come back and finish first controller.
btw glusterfs on repo needs to be upgraded to 10 before rebuilding first repo
server.
Also imo more services (not just keystone) do not support limit with recent
releases.

Question: You said "you need to restart ovn-northd service and ovn-central
right after it"
Why "right after it" is significant?

It seems to me I did restarted services "right after it".

I aslo restarted it after I completed upgrade of all controllers and the
day after :)

After restarting ovn-northd I only see ovn-northd. 2 ovsdb-server are not
started.
According ovn docs that that the only thing is needed to finish ovn upgrade.
But you also restarted ovn-central.
Me too. otherwise ovsdb-servers will stay down.

[Bug 2059721] Re: ovn db upgrade

2024-03-29 Thread Vadim Kuznetsov
I upgraded compute nodes first (rebuild the from scratch with new OS one by one
with VM live migrations) and controller second.
(I tried upgrading controller first and compute second before you updated
distro upgrade guide. It resulted in longer outage.)
When I upgraded 2 mgmt nodes and shutdown 3rd one, I tried restarting
ovn-central in different ways. Just restart on one node then restart second
one. Or rolling stop and rolling start. Nothing.
I rebuild 3rd controller and did the same restarts. did not work.

Did you see any of this messages:
2024-03-28T18:13:16.208Z|00511|ovn_northd|INFO|OVNSB commit failed, force
recompute next time.

[Bug 2059744] [NEW] kernel bug 6.8.0-11 Ubuntu 24.04 with MT7921

2024-03-28 Thread vadim
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Noble Numbat (development branch) x86_64
The problem is this: there is an error with the Wi-Fi driver MT7921
[ 825.412953] mt7921e :04:00.0: Message 00020007 (seq 8) timeout
[  825.413273] mt7921e :04:00.0: PM: dpm_run_callback():
pci_pm_resume+0x0/0x110 returns -110
[ 825.413296] mt7921e :04:00.0: PM: failed to resume async: error -110

And I found a ready-made patch for it that solves the problem
https://github.com/ShadowBlip/rz608-fix

And after this simple script the problem disappears
I'll attach the logs before and after I made this patch.
Add this solution to your distribution. Better yet, contact the people who are
responsible for the kernel and add it there so that it is global and applies to
all distributions, because I noticed the same thing in Fedora.

And where are the updates? Fedora suppresses all this, although the same errors
are also present there.
Is it possible to make the grub suppress these messages?

[Bug 2057916] [NEW] Desktop icon disappear in wayland in the sidebar in nautilus, but it appears again in xorg

2024-03-14 Thread vadim
Public bug reported:

Can you make another way to add a Desktop icon in wayland, so that it goes by
default next to the document and not custom added by the user?

i have GPU: NVIDIA GeForce MX150, instead of the usual gray color, my
monitor started showing a gray-pink color. I can't take a screenshot
because it will just be gray on your monitor (i checked the screenshot
in windows 11). Did the developers break something in the video card
driver or why did it happen?

It's still a problem when upgrading from 21.04 to 21.10, grub-mount hung
trying to query an unresponsive drive.

[Bug 1959465] Re: Mudlet not respecting user-selected server data encoding setting

2022-01-31 Thread Vadim Peretokin
Hi!

> When connecting to MUME with Force CHARSET negotiation enabled (box
NOT checked under Special settings)

There is no 'force charset negotiation on' option, just an option to
turn it off which is why I think you're confused.

The way it works is: you can either allow the server to set the
encoding, or you want to choose it yourself in which case you don't
allow it.

It's unfortunate that MUME is giving preference to ISO 8859-1 - it
should give preference to UTF-8.

I hope that helps!

P.S. I've just finally found a workaround myself: doing "apt install
libgcc-s1:i386" first, before installing anything else (but after "apt
update"), allows the installation to succeed.

2020-07-24 Thread Vadim Zeitlin
Although this is marked as "Invalid" for 20.04, this problem has somehow
started happening in GitHub Actions Ubuntu 20.04 virtual environment
since today (2020-07-24), even though it worked correctly before. I
don't know if attaching the entire build log is desirable, but as the
result of running these commands

2020-07-24T22:46:28.8786226Z sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
2020-07-24T22:46:28.8786352Z sudo apt-get update
2020-07-24T22:46:28.8786474Z sudo apt-get --assume-yes install \
2020-07-24T22:46:28.8786604Z automake bc bsdmainutils bzip2 curl cvs
default-jre \
2020-07-24T22:46:28.8786724Z   g++-mingw-w64-i686 g++-multilib git jing
libarchive-tools \
2020-07-24T22:46:28.8786866Z libtool libxml2-utils libxslt1-dev make patch
pkg-config rsync \
2020-07-24T22:46:28.8787006Z shellcheck sudo trang unzip wine32 wget xsltproc

I get, after many snipped lines, the following error:

2020-07-24T22:50:38.3418072Z Processing triggers for libc-bin (2.31-0ubuntu9)
...

details. (2)

and there don't seem to be any other errors in the output until these
lines, so I have no idea why does this happen.

FWIW the same step of this workflow succeeds when run in Ubuntu
18.04-based GitHub virtual environment, but it doesn't have sufficiently
up-to-date packages for building this software, so I can't use it and
would really appreciate any workaround for this problem under 20.04.

archive, and run

[Bug 1877712] Re: Severe performance degradation in Gnome Shell after upgrade to 20.04

2020-05-11 Thread Vadim Peretokin
Sorry, that's not really practical to do on a production system.

That said, the issue could have been because there wasn't enough disk
space. Clearing it up and rebooting seems to have solved things. This is
a change in behaviour from previous Ubuntu releases.

[Bug 1867758] Re: Gnome shell froze completely

2020-03-19 Thread Vadim Peretokin
1. _usr_bin_gnome-screensaver crashed on the 16th, which is a day before
this report. That crash was uploaded. _usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000 also
crashes on the 11th, that was uploaded as well.

2. I've uninstalled everything I could, will see if it happens again. I
just had the freeze happen now while extensions were still installed.

[Bug 1866004] [NEW] Correct password does not unlock computer

2020-03-04 Thread Vadim Peretokin
Public bug reported:

Every once in a while the lock screen will stop accepting the correct
password, and I lose all my open work.

I do have two input methods installed, but toggling between them on the
lock screen does not work.

I am able to go back to the main login screen and enter the password
there, but then it simply takes me back to the lock screen.

Happy to add any additional information!

I confirm. Ubuntu Eoan, machine - Thinkpad T430: kernel 5.0.0 - no

[Bug 1852611] Re: update-grub fails because 10_linux_zfs puts a spare closed brace

Same issue for me, grub update cannot create config file.
Problem was into "10_linux_zfs" and 10_linux. These scripts cant detect my pool
with OS, maybe becouse of chroot env.
I did add my pool to:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="root=ZFS=OS/ROOT/ubuntu"
And it isn't working, but it worked on ubuntu 19.04

[Bug 1805079] Re: click/pop noise in the headphone on several lenovo laptops

2019-01-24 Thread Vadim Vygonets
Hui Wang,

After applying the patch to 4.20.4 (and even after removing hda-verb on
module load and wake-up from sleep / hibernation), there's no noise,
neither after boot nor after S3 sleep or hibernation. Yes!!!

The quiet sound still remains. After testing it again (mplayer,
http://www.vygo.net/hda/11-Ultimatum.ogg 4:00-4:30) I'm pretty sure the
EQ is different. The bass is about 10dB lower; the middles also lower
but not by as much.

Thanks for your hard work,
Vadim.

[Bug 1805079] Re: click/pop noise in the headphone on several lenovo laptops

2019-01-22 Thread Vadim Vygonets
Hui Wang,

Apologies for the slow reply.

Do you mean that you also have quiet sound after the boot?

Today I upgraded to 4.19.12, and the results seem the same. I'm running
Funtoo Linux with "gentoo-sources" kernel, HDA and the Realtek codec as
modules and plain ALSA with no daemons. I tried to compile them into
the main kernel image, but the results were the same, except that the
LEDs didn't work.

Here are sone more details:

The noise level I hear does not change with the playback volume. It's
stronger when I play something (e.g., with mplayer) or touch the
touchpad.

Without the 0x12 line, alsamixer shows heasphone and speaker controls at
100%, and "alsactl store" has {Headphone,Speaker} Playback
{Volume,Switch}. Under the standard kernel (with your patch), the
aforementioned controls in alsamixer show up as "00" in a box, and
alsactl has only "Line Out Playback Volume" (and the two Switches).

With the standard kernel, the output of "alsactl store" is identical
whether the sound is in the "too quiet" state or in the "noisy
headphone" state.

Sometimes after I warm-reboot from a standard kernel to a kernel without
the 0x12 line, I hear clicks when muting and unmuting the output, or
noise, but they disappear after I play something (e.g., with mplayer).

[Bug 1805079] Re: click/pop noise in the headphone on several lenovo laptops

2019-01-22 Thread Vadim Vygonets
Hui Wang,

Without the 0x12 line (but with the rest of your patch) there is no
noise.

Likewise, with your patch (standard kernel), running hda-verb or loading
the module with the equivalent options also stops the noise.

Additionally, with your full patch the sound is 10dB lower (or 20dB
lower before replugging the headphones) than without the 0x12 line.

Thanks,
Vadim.

Meanwhile I use modprobe to configure the "verb", but also run hda-verb
on wakeup from sleep or hibernation.

[Bug 1805079] Re: click/pop noise in the headphone on several lenovo laptops

2019-01-04 Thread Vadim Vygonets
The two methods appear to do the same, except hda-verb applies the
change when run and the other method at the time the hda kernel module
is loaded. You can run hda-verb at boot instead, but the other method
looks cleaner to me, as it applies the fix when the hardware is
configured by the driver. I believe this fix can also be added to the
driver itself.

As I described above[0], after Hui Wang fixed this bug here that we're
commenting on[1], I started to hear noise in headphones. This is not
occasional crackling sound, this is constant annoying noise. Not every
gen6 Carbon has this issue, apparently. This fixes the issue.

[Bug 1805079] Re: click/pop noise in the headphone on several lenovo laptops

2019-01-04 Thread Vadim Vygonets
Hui Wang,

Yes, this solves the noise issue. Both the modprobe method from Lenovo
forum and the command you provided work perfectly. Thank you, and thank
you James!

I still have quiet sound initially. And, now that I compared it to the
kernel without the 0x12 line, it seems that the sound is quieter also
after replugging the headphones (which must be dome while sound is
playing). It's about 20dB lower before replugging and about 10dB lower
after, and perhaps less bassy, though I may be imagining things here.
I'm testing it with http://www.vygo.net/hda/11-Ultimatum.ogg which has
strong bass indeed. But I understand that you can reproduce it, so I
trust in you :)

Many thanks for solving the noise issue, and happy new year!
Vadim.

Plugging the headphones during Grub doesn't seem to matter.

thanks!

The script uploaded the info under random names, but they're the same
anyway.

Quiet:

Not quiet:

I also generated one without the 0x12 line:

[Bug 1805079] Re: click/pop noise in the headphone on several lenovo laptops

2018-12-24 Thread Vadim Vygonets

Is
it possible that "line out" is treated differently from "headphone" by
the hardware, or is it just a name?

With the standard kernel, the output of "alsactl store" is identical
whether the sound is in the "too quiet" state or in the "noisy
headphone" state.

Sometimes after I warm-reboot from a standard kernel to a kernel without
the 0x12 line, I hear clicks when muting and unmuting the output, or
noise, but they disappear after I play something.

I put my kernel config and alsactl store output under
http://www.vygo.net/hda/ but I don't know if it aids debugging in any
way. Do you think it may help if I try your kernel config?

Thank you for your efforts and, if appropriate, merry Christmas.

[Bug 1805079] Re: click/pop noise in the headphone on several lenovo laptops

2018-12-14 Thread Vadim Vygonets
Awesome, thank you. Let me know if you want me to run particular tests
or provide information. I'm not sure if the issue manifests every time.

On kernels before 4.19.7 I was hearing noise sometimes, especially after
waking up from S3 sleep, but S4 hibernation or reboot (possibly turning
the machine off was required) was solving it every time. I did not have
the issue with quiet sound output.

Have a nice weekend,
Vadim.
