[Bug 1099846] Re: with dual monitors connected, ubuntu will not shutdown

2013-02-20 Thread watgrad
Hello,
With dual monitors connected I shut down the offending laptop.
As usually happens with both monitors connected - both screens go black - and
shutdown apparently stops.

I tried to connect vis ssh from another networked computer - got the
message connection refused.

Unplugging the second monitor resumes the normal shutdown.

I hope this helps.

[Bug 1099846] [NEW] with dual monitors connected, ubuntu will not shutdown

2013-01-15 Thread watgrad
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS - this is a fresh installation
Macbookpro8,1
Intel i5 processor
intel sandybridge mobile graphics

If a second monitor is connected, ubuntu freezes during shut down and log out.
If the second monitor is disconnected, shut down proceeds as normal.
To reproduce:
setup dual monitors
try to shut down the system

I also noted this behaviour on 12.10 ubuntu, but have since reverted to
12.04 for a different reason.

I have always noted this behaviour - it has never shut down properly
with a dual monitor attached.

[Bug 1061639] Re: Upstartification of /etc/init.d/networking has lost deconfiguring-networking event causing bad side-effects

2013-01-08 Thread watgrad
I also am concerned about this hidden bug - I only discovered there was an
issue when I noticed that boot times were longer than normal. I have converted
all my main computers to 12.10 64 bit...
They all show this behaviour with messaged like:
[1.111309] EXT4-fs (sdb1): INFO: recovery required on readonly filesystem
[1.111314] EXT4-fs (sdb1): write access will be enabled during recovery
...
[2.127937] EXT4-fs (sdb1): orphan cleanup on readonly fs
[2.127946] EXT4-fs (sdb1): ext4_orphan_cleanup: deleting unreferenced inode
30148324
[2.128033] EXT4-fs (sdb1): ext4_orphan_cleanup: deleting unreferenced inode
30148284
[2.128042] EXT4-fs (sdb1): ext4_orphan_cleanup: deleting unreferenced inode
30148298
[2.128057] EXT4-fs (sdb1): ext4_orphan_cleanup: deleting unreferenced inode
44828301
[2.128091] EXT4-fs (sdb1): 4 orphan inodes deleted
[2.128093] EXT4-fs (sdb1): recovery complete

So I understand that this could lead to data loss? ...corrupt file
system? I have tried to follow yota's suggested fix, but could not get
that to work. On one laptop (macbookpro7,1 dual boot) shutting down
networking before shutting down the computer stops the behaviour - but
this is not true for the desktop systems (win7 dual boot).

The bug message says 'fix released' - how to I get and apply this fix?
(I already have the rec version of ifupdown...)

[Bug 1005507] Re: bluetooth broken when starting ubuntu with second monitor

2012-07-13 Thread watgrad
Hello,
I'm sorry, but I removed ubuntu unity, and replaced with Ubuntu mint 13.
(partially because of this issue - i needed bluetooth, but also because unity
kept showing error messages related to various programs - so it seemed
unstable).

I know that Mint is also based on 12.04, however I cannot reproduce this
problem in mint like I could in unity - bluetooth works all the time in
mint. Also, the other app report errors have stopped in mint - could I
have had a messed up installation of ubuntu?

Sorry to post this bug and then not be able to help you...

[Bug 1005507] [NEW] bluetooth broken when starting ubuntu with second monitor

2012-05-28 Thread watgrad
Public bug reported:

When I start up Ubuntu 12.04 with a second monitor plugged in, bluetooth will
not start.
If I start ubuntu without the second monitor, bluetooth starts everytime.

Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit

The bug report program asked me to execute the code:
sudo hcidump -XYt $HOME/hci.log
however, ubuntu does not recognize the command 'hcidump'.

[Bug 907340] [NEW] Windows do not behave properly in WINE applications with mutter as window manager

2011-12-21 Thread watgrad
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 11.10
Release:11.10

unity:
  Installed: 4.24.0-0ubuntu2.1
  Candidate: 4.24.0-0ubuntu2.1

I expected WINE applications to act as normal ubuntu applications. See
below for my observations.

I have tried using WINE 1.3.35, 1.3.28 and 1.2 all with the same result:

WINE applications run well in 11.10 except for a few very annoying issues:
- when a window first opens, it doesn't interact with the mouse properly:
1) no matter where the window opens on the screen, menus will open in the top
corner of the display
2) you cannot select text properly in text boxes/fields, the mouse selection
jumps all over the screen

Both of these behaviors disappear if you move the windows a little with
the mouse before you try to select text or select a menu. It is like the
application is unsure of where the window is on the screen, until you
move it a bit.

I've tried a few things to solve this:
- switching the riched20.dll native (didn't work)
- switching between various versions of wine (didn't work)
- When I turn off allow the window manager to decorate the windows' and 'allow
the window manager to control the windows' this strange behaviour disappears.
However, this makes the Wine application windows always stay on top of
everything else - interfering with work.
-booting into Gnome 3 also solves this problem - so it seems to be connected to
Unity's window manager?

WINE support directed me to file a bug with Ubuntu...

Hi Lars,
I tried this, however there is no history stored on the computer - it shows no

sorry.

LARS Wrote:
@watgrad, I still don't know where the invalid utf8 string comes from in your

trying to print? Please look for strange characters in the list of completed

I'm adding gnome-settings-daemon to the list of affected packages, as it
shouldn't crash when receiving a malformed message.

[Bug 883807] [NEW] can't share printer between 11.10 computers

2011-10-30 Thread watgrad
Public bug reported:

I have a desktop and laptop computer both running ubuntu 11.10.
The desktop has a HP F4180 printer connected via USB. The printer is working on
the desktop machine. I have shared this printer and selected Publish shared
printers connected to the system in the printers network menu on the desktop.

On the laptop (which connects to the home network via wireless) I've
selected show printers shared by other system. The shared F4180
printer shows up on the laptop's printer list. However, when I select
the printer for printing, or try to view it's properties the printing
system hangs...like it is stuck trying to communicate with the
printer...

I'm not sure how to fix this, because even when I run the Problems?
troubleshooter from Ubuntu's Printing app the system hangs
