I'm just amazed that this bug hasn't been fixed for years regardless of
Ubuntu being known as a Linux OS that has very good hardware support.

[Bug 96454] Re: [Feisty, Gutsy] MASTER: HP LaserJet 1000/1005/1018/1020 don't work because of missing firmware

2009-01-22 Thread xlinuks
I got HP LaserJet 1020 and it has never been working out of the box on Ubuntu,
I had to compile drivers by hand.
Now I got Jaunty Jackalope alpha 3 and no changes.
The printer is listed correctly as "HP LaserJet 1020", it's enabled, but when I
try printing, I get a printing queue but the most important thing - to actually
print - doesn't work, the printer does nothing.

2008-09-01 Thread xlinuks

[Bug 196277] Re: [hardy] keyboard layout switching shortcut doesn't work after reboot

2008-06-17 Thread xlinuks
I confirm too that the issue is gone after turning off auto login (at
System->Administration->Login Window->Security).
This might be also important: each time I after install (not start, but
install) Ubuntu 8.04, when the first time I access this option it takes like
forever to display this window (sometimes I have to restart the computer,
regardless of AMD or Intel chip). So perhaps this bug gets "auto-created" at
this point?

[Bug 175365] Re: Templates not working

2008-05-10 Thread xlinuks
Bruce van der Kooij wrote on 2008-02-21: "In my case the
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR variable in ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs wasn't set
properly. Might this also have been the case for you?"

- The value of the variable XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR gets changed from
"$HOME/Templates" to "$HOME" after the user removes the Templates folder and
reboots the computer. Thus to get back the templates to work one has to
manually set the value of XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR back to "$HOME/Templates".
If this is not a bug but a feature than please keep this bug report closed.

[Bug 219298] [NEW] (open)jdk install needs interaction

2008-04-18 Thread xlinuks
Public bug reported:

Hi,
noticed that the sun-java6-jdk in hardy is some kind of mix of different java
environments, including openjdk/icedtea/sun's java.
So when installing (yesterday) and updating (today, using the system update
manager) the jdk I noticed that it actually needs the user
to type "no" in certain cases, which shouldn't be the case since the java
installation program isn't aware whether the user
sees that message or not, because the udpater keeps by default the black
console area closed.
So a random number of users might wait like forever for the jdk to
install/update.

Here's a screenshot:

[Bug 213507] [NEW] nvidia-settings should come with sysinfo

2008-04-07 Thread xlinuks
Public bug reported:

Hi,
I have Hardy Heron x86 beta with all updates.
When installing "sysinfo" Hardy should also install "nvidia-settings" since
sysinfo depends on
the nvidia-settings utility.
Thus pressing on "NVDIA Display Settings" (see the attached screenshot) doesn't
have any effect unless
one manually installs nvidia-settings (on the screenshot nvidia-settings is
already installed by me).
Perhaps this bug is already listed somewhere - I couldn't find it though, if
so, please delete this bug report.

[Bug 139177] Re: Java 6 system tray not working in Gutsy Tribe 6

2007-12-28 Thread xlinuks
Yes, by now I have the final Gutsy release (I formatted the partition
and made a brand new installation) and the issue is (still) there. I
don't know how to help you. However I recorded it.

The Java app from the video I'm using to show that the system tray
works/doesn't work (only 74KB):
http://xlinuks.googlepages.com/JDocBrowser.jar

The first part where I start the Java app _after_ I have enabled desktop
effects (only 0.9MB), the system tray doesn't work:
http://xlinuks.googlepages.com/java_tray1.ogg

The first part of the video where I start the Java app _after_ I have disabled
desktop effects (1.1MB), the system tray works:
http://xlinuks.googlepages.com/java_tray2.ogg

On the videos I'm 'shaking' the windows to let you know whether the
desktop effects are enabled or not.

If needed - Java app contains the source code (unzip the jar and find the 'src'
folder, I wrote it a while ago..).
ps: I can live with this issue... IMHO the biggest issue with Java on Ubuntu
7.10 is that it cannot print...

[Bug 175365] Re: Templates not working

2007-12-11 Thread xlinuks
And oh.. I think this is a bug in Nautilus, because a novice user when entering
the home folder after system install sees an empty "Templates" folder and since
he doesn't know what's it for - deletes it.. he has no clue that if he deletes
this folder he will never have the templates working again.
I think one the following actions would be helpful:
1) Nautilus should always check for this folder so that the user realizes the
impact of deleting the folder he can get back the templates working, or:
2) The templates folder should be made hidden so that users don't accidentally
delete it, or move it to some other settings directory such as ~/.gconf or
alike, so that the user realizes that this folder is part of his desktop
settings and deleting it will affect (negatively) his desktop settings.

[Bug 175365] Re: Templates not working

2007-12-11 Thread xlinuks
I investigated a bit more into this problem and here's my conclusion: if
the user deletes the Templates folder (I did Shift+Delete) and restarts
the computer, nautilus seems to never check again for this folder
(nautilus doesn't show anymore any templates even if the user creates
this folder and adds templates to it).

Here's what I did:
On another computer a formatted a partition and made a clean install of Gutsy.
When I first logged there was already the "Templates" folder and I added a
OpenOffice odt document and it showed up instantly in the right-click menu.
Then I deleted this folder, made a computer restart, created back the folder
and the template - but the templates don't work anymore.

ps: If you care about your current templates I suggest checking what I
posted above on some computer/installation that you don't care about,
cause you risk having to reinstall the OS or something alike to get back
the templates working, just my 2 cents.. btw I'm surprised by the fast
reply, on Sun's bug track it usually takes weeks..

[Bug 175365] Templates not working

2007-12-10 Thread xlinuks
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Nautilus doesn't seem to work with file templates.
After including file templates into $HOME/Templates, nautilus doesn't add them
to the right-click->Create Document menu.
As specified by many tutorials, for example:
http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2006/12/08/how-to-create-easy-access-templates-via-right-click-ubuntu-510-6061-610/
nautilus should show these new templates in the right-click menu but it doesn't
(not even after computer reboot).
I installed another file manager - Thunar and it does display the new file
templates, so I think it's a bug in Nautilus.

Screenshots of both file managers behavior:
http://xlinuks.googlepages.com/nautilus.png

[Bug 139177] Java 6 system tray not working in Gutsy Tribe 6

2007-09-12 Thread xlinuks
Public bug reported:

Hi,
In Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 6 (build date 4th September 2007) the Java version 6 from
Sun (java full version "1.6.0_02-ea-b01") can't use the system tray _if_ Gutsy
has "Desktop Effects" enabled (System->Preferences->Appearance->Desktop
Effects: Normal Effects or Extra Effects).
Please note that:
- Java 6 _can_ use the system tray if it has been launched _before_ desktop
effects have been enabled.
- Java 6 _cannot_ use the system tray (throws an exception) if it has been
launched with desktop effects already enabled.
I understand that Java 6 from Sun is not fully opened yet so the Ubuntu
developers might not be able to help here, but my duty is to at least report
this problem.
I would provide a short video demonstrating this but the recording application
I'm using (gtk-recordMyDesktop) doesn't work correctly during desktop effects
being enabled/disabled.

[Bug 96651] Re: Default Java in KUbuntu needs Gtk support

2007-06-16 Thread xlinuks
Very good decision to include Sun's JRE. Hopefully the next generation
"Consumer JRE" which Sun promises to provide rather soon for windows
will be available for (K)Ubuntu too, but even if not, it will still be a
BIG improvement to include the last version of Sun's JRE instead of the
GNU one (the difference between GNU's last version (1.4) and Sun's (1.6)
is huge in both performance and functionality, IMHO that's one of (many
but important) reasons why people adopt python and perl on Linux rather
than Java ).

[Bug 96651] Default Java in KUbuntu needs Gtk support

2007-04-20 Thread xlinuks
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

OS Version: KUbuntu Feisty 7.04Beta downloaded CD version.
Java version: "1.4.2", Gnu libgcj version 4.1.2

THE ISSUE:
When the Java application is launched and uses/creates the default toolkit
[java.awt.Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit()] the Gnu java throws the error:
"java.awt.AWTError: Cannot load AWT toolkit: gnu.java.awt.peer.gtk.GtkToolkit"
NOTE: when using Java from SUN (version 1.4.2 or above) there's no such problem.
I think this is because the corresponding GTK libs that the GNU Java depends
on, are not installed ( at least not by default, which is an understandable
issue since KUbuntu is based on KDE). I'm a Java developer but I haven't ever
worked with the GNU Java, so I can't help much here.
I hope this was helpful.
