[Bug 421421] Re: track pad not working after update to karmic

2009-09-07 Thread yello
My track pad does not behave differently clicking bottom left to
clicking bottom right (there are separate right and left click buttons
below the trackpad). Prior to the upgrade, tapping the track pad
generated a 'right handed left button click' regardless of whether the
mouse was set left handed or right handed.

On consideration, I would not class this as a bug (even though it is
behaving differently as a result of the upgrade) but merely as a
difference, and probably a difference only apparent on my hardware.

Resolved. After switching the mouse to 'right handed', I could tap/click
the touchpad. If I switch back to left-handed, it doesn't work!

[Bug 239358] Re: Update Manager hangs in 8.04 LTS

2008-06-20 Thread yello
I just 'kill'ed the process (showed as before with ps -ef, i.e. 'Please
wait, this can take some time') . That returned focus to the Update
Manager window, it redisplayed the update screen, I clicked 'Update'
again... and I was asked for the root password and it all updated
correctly - no hanging.

[Bug 239358] Re: Update Manager hangs in 8.04 LTS

2008-06-19 Thread yello
A single update this morning (libpq5) hung. I know straight away whether
it's going to work or not because if it's going to work I get asked for
the root password. If I don't get asked, it hangs.

Personally, my feeling is perhaps the problem is not in the update
manager itself (hence most people being fine) but something to do with
what it's updating; either the packages it's loading OR the system it's
updating.

[Bug 239358] Re: Update Manager hangs in 8.04 LTS

2008-06-18 Thread yello
Reinsating 'openoffice.org-l10n-en-za' caused the update to hang. So I
looked a bit closer. Selecting/deselecting also selects/deselects other
packages. Update manager was then slow to redisplay the selections. Once
packages had been selected/deselected, the 'Update' option was greyed
out and the cursor changed to 'in process' , I could reselect, or cancel
out, but not update.

As you may have gathered from my vocab, I am no techie but is there
perhaps some linkage between packages (dependencies??) that is causing
the hang? The update manager is perhaps getting confused/lost in what it
needs to upgrade? That said, synpatic from a terminal window works fine.

[Bug 239358] Re: Update Manager hangs in 8.04 LTS

2008-06-18 Thread yello
Update; I removed 'openoffice.org-l10n-en-za' from the update list and
update manager ran to completion successfully. I find it difficult to
believe that it was the source of the problem but it might be a clue to
what is. I'll see what happens after I select it for update.

[Bug 239358] Re: Update Manager hangs in 8.04 LTS

2008-06-17 Thread yello
It hung again this morning on an update. Interestingly, it also hung
when I viewing the details of the packages to be updated. On both
occasions the results of "sudo id" was

uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root),126(vboxusers),1001(usbusers)

I ran pstree -A after it hung when I was viewing the updates and when it
was installing them.

I also ran a ps -ef when it hung during update, that showed

 /usr/bin/gksu --desktop /usr/share/applications/update-manager.desktop
-- /usr/sbin/synaptic --hide-main-window --non-interactive --parent-
window-id 33554435 -o Synaptic::closeZvt=true --progress-str Please
wait, this can take some time. --finish-str Update is complete --set-
selections-file /tmp/tmpUUTxFO

I've also included the file /tmp/tmpUUTxFO

The last update listed (openoffice.org-l10n-en-za) in the above file,
and this may just be coincidental, was also the package I was trying to
look at the details of when it hung.

Same problem here.

I've found related solutions but they are for the 'no sound' problem so,
as I have sound, I'm not going to risk messing it up!

[Bug 239358] Re: Update Manager hangs in 8.04 LTS

2008-06-13 Thread yello
I was having the same problem (i.e. hanging Update Manager). I updated
with synaptic and then, after having read this thread, did...

apt-get -f install
apt-get clean
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

All ran cleanly without error. Interestingly, apt-get upgrade found the
following...

xserver-xorg-core

I also had the newest version of libgksu2-0
