You must disable polling to remove the odd behavior, either on the fly
via:

# sudo -i  echo N /sys/module/drm_kms_helper/parameters/poll

or for a permanent solution.

# sudo -i
# echo options drm_kms_helper poll=N/etc/modprobe.d/local.conf
# reboot
