(might as well be generic kernel / usb / laptop tools related but i am
especially suspecting NTFS)

Yesterday I was transferring files from an NTFS volume using a high-
speed USB3 Samsung disk.

The transfer rate according to iostat would not go above 900kB/s (yes,
that's not even 1mB/s). The rates for the high speed device should be
over 90mB/s!

A couple of days ago I was using a plain USB memory stick and the
transfers were even worse. It mostly never got over that same rate as
the earlier device.
