Despite the sticky flag is part of our development compiz is not. And for now, we're not supporting compiz integration into our core. Jack, I can confirm that some desklets show up on all desktops while others do not. Even desklets by the same author where the code is almost identical. It appears to be per desklet. (note: running this on Gentoo, not Ubuntu but it should be able to point more knowledgable peeps in the right direction). The starterbar desklet does not appear on all workspaces, but the clock applet does. AFAIK getting desklets to appear on all workspaces has to do with the sticky-setting of the windows. Basically it should not matter when compiz is started because in the end all desklets are just GTK-windows. I think it was after I upgraded to Feisty and my Compiz went all screwy and I had to fiddle around with it a lot, I noticed the desklets only appeared on the first workspace. This was when starting gDesklets automatically at login. I found that when I manually started gDesklets after Compiz had loaded the desklets appeared on all workspaces. If I remember correctly, if gDesklets is added to the Sessions > Startup Programs list after (that's timewise, not position in the list) Compiz tray icon it'll be fine; adding Compiz tray icon after gDesklets means they only appear on the first workspace.
