It appears the version of Ubuntu you are running is very close to "End
of Life"[1].  It is recommended that you upgrade to a supported release
soon.

  I get random complete system crashes when using firefox.

 the screen displays crash information
 the system is completely frozen, 
 mouse and keyboard are not answering
 I can not switch to a console (Ctrl-Alt-n)
