confirming that Kernel 3.6 from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/ fixes this problem.

Is there any chance to get the fix backported to 12.10? (or a hint for a
somewhat current 3.6 kernel repo?)

[Bug 1056468] Re: monitor inactive during plymouth animation (radeon, fallback to /dev/fb0)

2012-09-28 Thread Brian Murray
I've encountered the same bug with an ATI card.

I modified plymouth, per Steve's suggestion, so that the radeon driver
would be preferred over the generic driver and that had no effect. So
this seems like a kernel bug - moving it over there.

** Package changed: plymouth (Ubuntu) = linux (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1056468] Re: monitor inactive during plymouth animation (radeon, fallback to /dev/fb0)

2012-09-28 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.6 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both
the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-
upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the
other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next
to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the
'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
Confirmed.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 1056468] Re: monitor inactive during plymouth animation (radeon, fallback to /dev/fb0)

2012-09-28 Thread Steve Langasek
I should clarify that this could also be a regression in libdrm, which
had a new version uploaded on Sep 3. Someone who can reproduce this bug
should regression test to see if downgrading the libdrm, or downgrading
the kernel, or both, fixes this issue.

[ply-renderer.c] ply_renderer_open_plugin:opened renderer

So this appears to be opening the framebuffer at the right resolution,
which suggests it ought to work. However, it *should* be opening with
the DRM driver, and this is failing, leading to a fallback to the
framebuffer driver.
