Got it; the only change necessary to get it working is

   options nvidia NVreg_Mobile=2

in /etc/modules.d/options. xorg.conf is back to default.

It may also be helpful to include the output of
lspci -nv | grep 300
and to try and whittle down which combination of
options nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=2
Option "RenderAccel" "true" Option "NvAGP" "3" Option "UseEdidFreqs" "true"
(I suspect it might be the module options and NvAGP...)
