I have reported the problem upstream (in the alsa-devel list) and submitted the S/PDIF patch found in http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.alsa.user/36816/focus=36820. Has the kernel patch that Raymond pointed to been added upstream? I need to take this back: I installed the Xonar U3 driver under Windows and after a restart, S/PDIF is also available under Ubuntu; this output option features normal volume control over the whole percentage range.
