[Bug 1098779] Re: Xorg freeze

2014-01-04 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Howard Chu, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
However, your crash report is missing. Please follow these instructions to have
apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the
automatic retracer. First, execute at a terminal:
cd /var/crash sudo rm * ; sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get -y upgrade
sudo apt-get -y install xserver-xorg-core-dbg xserver-xorg-video-radeon-dbg
xserver-xorg-video-ati-dbg sudo service apport start force_start=1

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now reproduce the crash, then open your file manager, navigate to your
/var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'. If you run the command against the crash
report and it does nothing, you may be affected by
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/994921 . In order to
WORKAROUND this, one would need to open the following file via a command line:
gksudo gedit /etc/apport/crashdb.conf

and comment out the line:
'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'],

by changing it to:
# 'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'],

Save, close, and try to file the crash report again via:
ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash

Please follow https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSystemCrash
when you file this crash report so the necessary information is
provided.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1098779] Re: Xorg freeze

2013-01-13 Thread Narf
Since it turned out that installing the fglrx package doesn't
automatically run 'aticonfig --initial', I've attached log files for
both when xorg.conf is not present and when it is generated by running
'aticonfig --initial', along with the generated xorg.conf file.

Sorry about those being in separate comments - launchpad doesn't seem to
enable me to add multiple attachments with 1 comment.

[Bug 1098779] Re: Xorg freeze

2013-01-11 Thread Narf
I can confirm this on 100%, with some more details:

 - I haven't tried ssh, but my power button works - not forcing it, I see
messages about terminating running processes.
 - Kernel image version is irrelevant, I've tried with 3.5.0-17-generic,
3.5.0-21-generic, 3.5.0-22-generic.
 - fglrx-updates gives the same result.
 - Installing the latest drivers from AMD's website also doesn't work (both the
latest stable and Catalyst 12.11 Beta 11).

Xorg.0.log says Screens found, but none have a usable configuration.
(from memory, I'm on another machine right now and will post the full
log later).

My graphics adapter is AMD Mobility Radeon HD 7650M on a Sony Vaio E
series (SVE1712V1EB) laptop. I did a lot of googling and it seems like
only a few guys on Arch Linux have managed to run a Radeon HD 7000M
series adapter with fglrx.
